Both Jamestown and Plymouth colonies struggled greatly at first due to lack of proper leadership, shelter, and food supplies. However, while Jamestown eventually thrived due to the cultivation of tobacco crops, Plymouth faced particularly harsh conditions in its first winter that led to many deaths before receiving aid from local Native Americans. The Pilgrims at Plymouth also established their colony with the goal of seeking religious freedom away from the Church of England, in contrast to the primary economic motivations of the Jamestown colony.
