Short Term Memory
By strengthening an existing synapse in some way you can create a neural pathway in a short time.
There are many local short term memory circuits in the brain. Biochemical modification and
rehearsal of synapses mediates the short term memory function. The hippocampus releases fresh
memory traces with the cortex, eventually blending memorypatterns in the cortex via gene
expression into the protein modified synapses of long term memory. The blending process could
take days or even weeks for deeply set long term memory. So synapses in the cortex that were first
circuits for the short term memory became through rehearsal and blending molecularly engraved as
long term memory.[7]
An individual neuron can be a part of a lot of memory patterns. The thousands of synapses of its
dendritic tree will have different activity configurations for each of the memory patterns in which it
participates.[7] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In general the short term memory refers to memories that last no longer than 30 seconds unless they
are rehearsed in that time frame, this paragraph will discuss the short term memory in depth.[9]
The short term memory is the part of the memory in the brain that can store information for a very
short period of time. It can only hold a limited amount of information for several seconds up to
several minutes. The short term memory is located in the prefrontal lobe of the brain (figure 3.1),
inside this the short term memory is located inside the hippocampus and the amygdala.[9]

discuss the objectives of week four. Team B s discussion will include the characteristics and
functions of different types of insurances, the importance of wills, and explain what taxable
income is, and the steps an individual needs to take to file his or her federal tax return. Insurance
The function of possessing insurance is to help cover a part of what a person has lost. It consists

Each individual (beneficiaries) has a percentage of assets, (retirement funds, IRA s and 401 k

memorabilia, and jewelry. If there is no other assets, such as land or homes to sell or divide, the
will is in the simplest form and needs to be signed and dated in the presence of our lawyer and
other spouse as applicable. A will can provide family members with a peace of mind knowing that
their loved ones funeral, financial, and health care arrangements are settled. Other relatives will be
spared of personal and emotional hardships as the result. Income Tax Income taxes are calculated
by taking an individual s total income and subtracting any adjustments, deductions, or exemptions,
which is called taxable income. If a person looks at the income tax table he or she can find their
tentative tax total. By subtracting any tax credits or taxes already paid, gives the individual the
number that will either be a refund amount or a total amount due. Looking at tax deductions and
exemptions shows that gifts and home mortgage interest paid are both tax deductible, and
unexpected doctor or dentist payments can be deducted along with any dependents claimed can
reduce the amount of taxes owed. There are ways to save a penny or two concerning filing federal
taxes. They may include looking into flexible spending accounts or retirement plans and

Analysis Of Bill Gates And Paul Allen
The History of Microsoft
Bill Gates and Paul Allen are both the cofounders of the Microsoft Company. The start of their
boundless achievements started when they were in high school on one of the computer terminals.
All of their free time and little money were spent working in that high school terminal. The
development that really instated everything in the business sense was when they read an article in
1971, in the business magazine regarding Intel s 4004 chip. Soon they both got access about the
chip and decided that they both knew how to make the microprocessor better. Later that year the
company Intel came up with an upgraded chip called the 8008. The cofounders of Microsoft then
went and purchased their very own 8008 for $360. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By April of that year Gates and Allen finished the language and persuaded MITS to retail it. Paul
was then offered a position with MITS and the both of them went and worked in a small office for
MITS. Soon following Microsoft was created.
In the start, the management skills of Allen and Gates were somewhat not serious. Both the men
were a part every single decision that was to be made for the company. They were both very
cautious entrepreneurs. The difference in their roles of the company was that, Allen was the one
always wanting new technology, and Gates was more absorbed in doing negotiations, contracts,
and professional deals. They gained more knowledge as their company continuously grew.
Microsoft s basic business plan was to alter prices so that computer makers could not do it for less
in house. Texas Instruments gave Microsoft one of their biggest contracts where TI bid $99,000
providing programming languages for a home computer TI was going to make. Microsoft then
started selling to Japanese companies they were so overpromised that it was ridiculous.
Sometimes their business would get a little terrifying. In their first talk to MITS they organized
with MITS that they would sell BASIC to their customers. MITS then later not to sell it because
there were so many pirated copies of BASIC around that they did not see a reason why they should

The Effect Of Pictorial Condition And Verbal Condition Essay
The effect pictorial condition and verbal condition have on the number of correct responses in a
memory test
Abstract
The aim of the experiment was to test whether pictures or words would lead to an increased
recognition response. The picture superiority effect suggests that pictures are better recognised
than words. This is shown by supporting researchers. Standing et al (1970) found that participants
who studied over 2000 pictures, 90% of those had accurately recognised them after several days.
Paivio had also suggests that pictures are dual coded which explains why pictures are better
remembered than words, which is encoded once in memory. In order to investigate whether pictures
or words are best recognised participants were split into two conditions, pictorial and verbal. In the
verbal condition participants saw words after being presented with pictures for 10 seconds whilst
the pictorial condition saw pictures. This therefore measured the participants correct recognition
response in both the pictorial condition and verbal condition. The participant completed 48 trials in
each condition.
Introduction
Memory can be described as our ability to recall information from past experience, store, retrieve,
and encode information from the brain. Memory has a large capacity that allows us to learn, build
new experiences and form new relationships. (Mastin, L. 2016)
There are many types of memory including the two main types, short term memory (STM) and long

Essay On Technology In Secondary Schools
The City of Casey is the most densely populated municipality in Victoria, with a total of 16
secondary schools within the area. English, Mathematics, and Science are the fundamental subjects
in the secondary school course of study, with a variety of 50 elective subjects differentiating
throughout each school. This report s focus is to perceive and determine how schools in the City of

Although the physical components of ICT models are of central concern for most schools, software
and programs must also be recognised as having a significant impact on the learning and teaching of
both students and teachers. Programs such as Maths Pathways, Moodle, Google and Microsoft
Office 365 aid in the learning process of students across Australia, the most common being
Microsoft Office 365. These systems can be used for almost everything a student requires to have
a productive and effective academic career. With access to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and
Excel, OneNote, Outlook and Microsoft Classroom, teachers and students have all the tools they
need to build an effective learning environment. Technology use in education, to date, has had a
beneficial impact on the lives of both teachers and students. However, we must invest time and
money towards upskilling teachers so they have the ability to use the technology in the
classrooms in order to provide effective learning for students. The best learning resource for
teachers are teachers themselves and Microsoft Teams is a good example of an online forum for
people to connect, communicate and learn. The City of Casey could promote such a forum for

Investigating The Friction Of A Sliding Block With And...
Introduction
Friction is a force that is directed against the direction of motion. It usually acts to slow down the
moving object. In some occasions, this force can be useful such as in the case where vehicles are
making turns. In these cases, the frictional forces provide the needed force to stay on the track. In
this experiment, we used a force sensor and a computer to determine the friction of a sliding block
with and without different masses on it.
Procedure
Description of setup
We connected the force sensor to the labquest, and from the latter to the computer. A string was
then tied to the hook on the woodblock and the other end to the force sensor s hook. Photo below.
The range switch on the force sensor was set to 10N. After this, the logger pro was launched and
the setup was zeroed. To zero the setup, there had to be no tension in the string; then we hit the Р¤
looking button to zero.
Outline of technique
It was necessary to know the mass of the woodblock throughout this experiment. So, its mass was
weighed and recorded in the table below. A 1 kg mass was then, placed on the top of the
woodblock. From here, we were ready to pull the force sensor and see what results we get on the
graphs. A small force was applied to the force sensor and then pulled hard enough to set the system
in motion. The pulling was continued for some time and it was done steadily and at the same pace.
Various other massed were tested and the resulting frictions that they produced are recorded

Why Is Running On A Treadmill Speech
Good morning / afternoon
My speech will be done on Is running on a treadmill more effective then running on the road
Running in general is a full body exercise, no matter if it s on a treadmill or just running on open
road. It has been debated since treadmills came out if they are better than road running. I do believe
that running on a treadmill is not the same as running on the road. Yes they are both forms of
exercises but I do believe one is more effective than the other. So I m going to give you a full brief
on why I think so.
Treadmills are a training machine, normally found at the gym or in one s home. They have many
parts that make it operate. There is something called the belt, which is the moving surface you see
and feel when standing on a treadmill. This belt gives assistance to the runners leg turnover , there
is also no wind resistance for the runners body to encounter, just these two things alone can ... Show

Its unpredictable. You can t be running outside when its hailing or there s lightening that would be
unsafe and unwise to attempt. There s also environmental challenges like stopping at a robot to
cross over this can affect your running time and pace, whereas on a treadmill you do not find
these complications , you can run on your treadmill even when its pouring outside, the weather
should have no effect on your running. You also won t find environmental challenges that will
cause you to stop unless it s for your own safety or it s a machine problem. Safety is one of the
biggest problems runners face today with road running. You got to constantly be on the lookout ,
you can have anything distracting you like music through headphones where that could not allow
you to hear what s going on around you. Treadmill running is safe apart from some people having
heart attacks or slipping off they have been built with a huge red button that allows you to stop the
machine from moving straight

Summary Of Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep
Throughout Philip K. Dick s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? we see the main character,
Rick Deckard become steadily more empathetic towards the androids. However, the crux of this
change in his perspective is observed in his attempt to kill Luba Luft and the turmoil he feels
afterwards. In Dick s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Luba Luft is one of the most human
androids of the story and it is this trait that makes it so hard for Rick to kill her. She acts just as a
young girl would, exhibiting innocence and naivety. This is observed in how absorbed 2. fig.
Having one s attention fully or intensely engaged in; captivated, engrossed (OED online, 2) she
is in the painting, puberty . Luba is taking part in the inherently human act of enjoying art so
much so that she is absorbed in the picture before her (122), not even noticing the two bounty
hunters set to kill her. The vulnerability exhibited by Luba through these actions is mirrored in
the painting she is so engrossed in: a drawing of a young girl, hands clasped together, seated on
the edge of a bed, an expression of bewildered wonder and new, groping awe imprinted on the
face (122). The girl in the painting is nude and undergoing Puberty , a vulnerable stage in a
young girl s life in which she becomes a woman; Luba is attempting to undergo her own puberty
, trying to transition into becoming a human being and not just another android. Rick s changing
views on androids is not only illustrated by his growing empathy towards them but also in how he
thinks of them. He begins to associate human traits with them seeing them more as people than
objects. This new view of androids is contrasted to Phil Resch s view of them when he attempts
to murder Luba and Rick tries to persuade him not to. Phil continually refers to Luba and other
androids as it (124), objectifying them. To Phil, the androids are not people at all: they are
objects. Whereas Rick refers to Luba as her (122), this difference in pronouns illustrates that Rick
sees Luba as a human being. Rick s behaviour towards Luba and androids in general has changed

Who Is Don Quixote Insane
Don Quixote by Cervantes
The story of Don Quixote is about an old man named Alonso Quijano, dismayed by the current
state of his life who was so into chivalric novels that he became insane and decided that he was a
vagrant knight. Quijano renames himself as Don Quixote de La Mancha and decides to win eternal
glory through the besting of wrongdoers and general upholding of the Chivalric Code.
Though framed in the narrative of the chivalrous stories that so transfixed Quixote. In many ways,
Don Quixote is a novel about how Don Quixote perceives the world and about how other
characters perceive Don Quixote who often appears to be insane to those around him. Some, such
as Quixote s friends the barber and the priest, initially try to persuade Don Quixote out of his
knightly delusions. To get Don Quixote to go along with their efforts, however, they must play
along with his world, pretending to believe in his wild fantasies. The way that the people around
Don Quixote react, and even in some of the actions that he takes himself lies what modern medicine
would consider schizophrenic tendencies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

objects that should be familiar to him, shamelessly attacking strangers such at the incident in the

seem more a matter of Don Quixote s own choosing. Often times his madness translates into the
rules of chivalry that he has taken up. In fact Don Quixote s plans often are quite meticulously
planned. One such example is when Quixote plans to take penance in the Sierra

Education Is Not A Finite Subject
Education is not a finite subject, but an ever expanding conglomerate. Today we view success as
going to school, getting a job, and having a family as success in the system. Schools see grades as
progress of education. One has to know all options and succeed in truly understanding the subject
that interests them the most. Jumping forward a couple of centuries kids are told to not major in
art because it will not financially sustain them. It is too unstable and unpredictable. If we go

With the help of an education, anyone can seek their interest. People choose their own directions
in life with this; they can set goals for themselves and make great efforts to achieve them.
Education is surrounding all aspects of life and is transferred from one generation to another. So,
if the present generation is educated, the forthcoming one is to be even more educated. Our
generations will lead the society and country. Education has been recognized as the priority area
since it improves the lives of others. People learn today, but tomorrow they will either lead or teach.
Globally speaking, people lacking proper education generally cannot differentiate between right
and wrong. They can be misguided unless guided correctly through education. The impacts on the
entire globe are very apparent and crucial. People can become a troublesome element to the rest
of the world if not properly taken care of. Thus, the accessibility and affordability of an education
are significant to global development. There have been an increased number of juveniles who,

Limited Liability Companies ( Llc )
Limited liability companies (LLC) in my opinion would be the best way to go to start up a
business. With the ability of choosing which regime of taxation the business will identify with,
protection from liability for the debts accrued by the business, no double taxation on business and
member, and having the business counted as a separate entity, LLCs enjoy many of the benefits
that corporations do, while being counted as a default partnership where new LLC laws do not
cover an issue. Opening a restaurant as an LLC is ideal because of the lesser amount of paperwork
that has to be done, and the ability to have numerous members, permitting LLCs to exercise more
efficiency which saves time advertisement startup capital per member. While LLCs... Show more

Firstly, sensibly, the name must be unique. No LLC may use an existing name to identify as, to
prevent tax and brand confusion. Secondly, the business must identify clearly as an LLC
somewhere in its brand name. Last, one cannot include a restricted or prohibited word in the
name of the company, such as anything that can identify as a federal or state institution or infers
that professionals are part of the company where there are no such beings. As long as the business
follows these three rules, the business name will be automatically filed with the state, easing the
creation of the business by limiting the amount of paperwork to non duplication. The SBA goes
on to state that one must file articles of organization, which is a simple document that legitimizes
your LLC and includes information like your business name, address, and the names of its
members. Following this, it is prudent to create a business hierarchy, so that everyone involved in
the business knows what they should be doing, and how much of the operation is their
responsibility. One should then file the appropriate documents with the correct federal, state, or
local offices, in order to receive a license to operate. Some states require that new business
announce their presence in local newspapers, but either way, one should hire appropriate staff for
the type of business one is beginning. The advantages of forming an LLC, as stated before, allow
members to enjoy tax and liability protection.

The Consumer Decision Making Process
Introduction Consumer behaviour examines how individuals acquire, use and dispose of
company offerings (Noel 2009). Acquiring a product or service is not the only consideration of
consumer behaviour but the various stages and processes before these offerings are bought. In
this essay I will be analysing a television purchase I made from Argos using the consumer
decision making process and concluding with a justification in the context on consumer decision
making process. The consumer decision making process is a compound process, which involves
six stages problem recognition, Information search, pre purchase evaluation of alternatives,
purchase, consumption, post consumption evaluation and divestment. First Stage: Problem
Recognition Problem recognition is the first stage in the consumer making process; it arises
when there is an occurrence of a want or need. These needs could be simple, complicated or
ambiguous depending on a consumer s needs, attitudes, expectations, and personality. Maslow s
hierarchy of needs suggests that the basic needs such as food, sleep and shelter need to be
satisfied before moving up the pyramid, however, in my case I prioritized my safety and esteem
needs. Having moved into a new apartment of my own, I presumed the TV I had bought a year
ago was out dated, small, and not sophisticated enough and later came to a conclusion to purchase
another TV which suited my taste and preferences. Prior or to coming to this decision, I had to

Personal Computer Impact
Throughout history, new technology has always had an economic impact, each technology
differing in significance of impact. In some cases this impact may not be as drastic as it appears at
first glance, and in others, it may be more so. The personal computer, first introduced in 1975, has
certainly had an impact on the economy of the developed world in which it is, including the United
States. However, there are those out three who believe that the personal computerhas not had as
great an impact on economics in the United States as it would appear at first glance. The personal
computerhas certainly affected the economy, but the questions of How much? , and Who remain.
When the personal computer first came onto the scene in the 1970s, many companies tried to
jump into the new market. Some of the names involved are still familiar household names even
still today, but some failed in this new market quickly after joining. One name that is still easily
recognizable today is Apple. In 1976, Apple designed and released the Apple I. However, it wasn t
until 1980 that personal computers became affordable enough that they could be used at home. In
that year, Commodore released a personal computer that only cost consumers $299, which was
more affordable to the average consumer than previous computer prices had been. It is estimated
that by the end of 1980, there were around one million personal computers in use in the US. In

one that was shown in reality during the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, nuclear
weapons have not only served in combat, but they have also played a role in keeping the world
peaceful by the concept of deterrence. The usage of nuclear weaponswould lead to mutual
destruction and during the Cold War, nuclear weapons were necessary to maintain international

Since the end of the Cold War, the cases of nuclear proliferationin Iran and North Korea have
gathered enormous international attention. Iran s nuclear program appeared as a result of the
Cold War alliance between the United States and the late Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza
Pahlavi. In 2003, Iran was suspected of developing a military nuclear capability and is now
developing medium and intermediate ballistic missiles, which are capable of carrying a nuclear
warhead. On the other hand, North Korea set off a nuclear device and declared suspicions about a
military nuclear program in 2006. Iran and North Korea have recently started cooperation to
develop multi stage ballistic missiles and have conducted several missile flight tests over the last
few years (Schmid, 2008).
With sources dating back to the late 1960s, North Korea s nuclear weapons program has
expanded to be a useful instrument of the government s security. Its principal motivations for
developing the nuclear weapons are as follows: to block foreign pressure, create an international
impact and preserve the terms and conditions of the DPRK (ruling party of North Korea). In
contrast, Iran s motivations to develop strategic weapons appear to be more complex than that of
North Korea. Iran s efforts to develop nuclear, chemical and

King Lear, Rose and Ginny are found to be respectable daughters who instead of taking
advantage of their father, only offered their care and love for him. Ginny, the protagonist is seen
to be submissive to the male figures in her life, her father Larry and her husband Ty. Ginny takes
on the role of a motherly and loving character who not only takes care of her father and husband
but also cares for her sisters Rose and Coraline. When Larry gets into a car crash due to drinking
and driving instead of leaving him stranded due to his very careless and stupid chose, Ginny and

behaviour and ever since their mother s death, both Ginny and Rose make him breakfast every

City of God Analysis
Kellene Berry Sociology 1 Kolstad 05/23/2012 City of God Application and Analysis The movie
City of God has many examples of sociological theories of crime and deviance. Some of the major
theories I noticed throughout the movie were the functionalist theory, including examples of
relative depravation, as well as the interactionist theory, including differential association and
labeling. There was also evidence of the conflict theory and the control theory throughout the film.
The functionalist theory states that hard work leads to rewards, and when these rewards are not
sufficient, deviance arises. Crime and deviance result from structural tensions and a lack of moral
regulation within society (Giddens). An example of this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conflict theory says that crime and deviance is a result of economic inequalities. If the families
in the movie had money, they would have no desire to be deviant and commit robbery. One
example of the control theory in the movie was the fact at how easily the children were
committing crimes. The control theory says that crime results from an imbalance between
impulses toward criminal activity and social or physical controls that deter it (Giddens). It seemed
that all of the children in the City of God had guns, but not one of the people they robbed had a
gun. This made it fairly easy for kids to rob others who are unarmed. Also the kids were allowed to
run around the city without any parental supervision. Even the police had a hard time catching the
youths after they committed crimes. These factors allowed the children to be deviant with no
reprimanding what so ever. In conclusion the movie City of God was an excellent example of the
many sociological theories discussed in class. The movie demonstrated the functionalist theory, the
interactionist theory, the conflict theory and even the control theory. It provided a prime example
of the work of many sociologists, such as Emil Durkheim, Robert Merton, Edwin Sutherland, Edwin
Lemert, Karl Marx and many others. Each of these sociological theories was helpful in
understanding the crime and deviance in the movie. Works Cited Giddens, Anthony, Mitchell

Pros And Cons Of Sociological Theories
One of the main things sociology tries to explain is where sociology comes from. Social order
can begin to be explained through four theories looking at an individual or a group, and whether
the decisions they make are rational or irrational. The first theory is the exchange theory. The
exchange theory says that individuals make a rational choice to enter into relationships to get
something out of it. This is the theory criminal justice professionals use to see criminals. People
make a rational choice whether or not to commit a crime by weighing the pros and cons. Laws are
enacted to make the scale lean more towards the con side to deter crime. The next rational theory is
the conflict theory. The conflict theory says that people come together

Narrative Voice of Frederick Douglass
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
The tone established in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is unusual in that from the
beginning to the end the focus has been shifted. In the beginning of the narrative Douglass seems
to fulfill every stereotypical slavery theme. He is a young black slave who at first cannot read and
is very naГЇve in understanding his situation. As a child put into slavery Douglass does not have
the knowledge to know about his surroundings and the world outside of slavery. In Douglass
narrative the tone is first set as that of an observer, however finishing with his own personal
accounts. When first introduced to Douglass and his story, we find him to be a young slave boy

Douglass states before narrating any of the peculiar circumstances, I deem it proper to make
known my intention not to state all the facts connected with the transaction. In doing so
Douglass assumed the narrative would lose the interest of its readers, however the mere thought
of a slave man risking his life for a chance to freedom is able to recapture the interest of any facts
left out. In the conclusion of the narrative Frederick Douglass contemplates escaping, weighing
it against the idea of leaving all of his friends. Douglass says, I had a good number of warm
hearted friends in Baltimore, friends that I loved almost as I did my life, and the thought of being
separated from them forever was painful beyond expression. Such a personal tone and accounts
make the reader truly see the change Douglass has gone through since the beginning of the
narrative. The language difference from the beginning up until the conclusion can be based solely
on spirit and education. From the start Douglass did not know much about anything and spoke like
he should have, from a child s view. This includes a child s inquisitiveness, demonstrated by his
speaking of others more than himself. As he grows and matures, and is even given the gift of an
education the language changes dramatically to that of an educated man. Speaking in an
intellectual manner Douglass sees that his ability to read and write has truly set him free. From the

Hurricane Sandy
Did you know Hurricane Sandy is known as The Superstorm ? Sandy was one of the most
destructive hurricanes in the 2012 Atlantic Season. On October 19, 2012, the meteorologists
named the storm Hurricane Sandy. Sandy developed in the Caribbean Sea on October 22,
2012.Sandy was deadly, moved very quickly, but there are ways to survive hurricanes.
To begin with, the destruction from Sandy left around 286 people globally dead. From Florida to
Maine, Sandy caused water levels to rise. Along the East Coast, there were lunar high tides that
made the sea level rise several feet. Although, scientists are still wondering if the climate change
played a part in Hurricane Sandy. More than 8 million homes and businesses lost electricity ... Show

The highest wind speed Sandy reached was 115 mph. Sandy was a category 3 hurricane, but even
though Sandy was not category 5, it still caused a lot of damage. Hurricane Sandy was the second
costliest hurricane in United States history. An extra tropical storm was made when sandy
combined with another storm system. On October 29, the storm picked up even more strength by
combining with a second storm.
Lastly, there are many ways to be prepared for hurricanes. Here are some tips on being prepared
for during a hurricane. To stay informed, keep a radio near or go into a safe room with television,
take shelter in a small interior room, closet, or a hallway that is on the lowest level, find a sturdy
table and lie under it. Although, try to be prepared before a hurricane. Trim the trees around
your home so they do not do as much damage as a giant tree would do, secure your home and
property, have the curtains and blinds kept closed. Those were some of the survival tips about
how to survive a hurricane. In conclusion, hurricane Sandy was destructive, and traveled quickly,
but in the end, some people made it out alive with a lot of damage done. A large storm was made
when Sandy combined with another storm system. Sandy gained even more strength by
combining with a second storm system! Sandy ended November 2, 2012. Hurricane Sandy blew

Punishment For Capital Punishment
Mahatma Gandhi echoed the phrase, An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Capital
punishment has been a process of punishment since time before Christ. Capital punishment or the
death penalty, is the process of punishing, an individual, by execution for committing a crime. One
moral theory to justify this process of punishment is cited in Mark Timmons s book Disputed Moral
Issues: A Reader. The consequentialist theory states, A specific punishment for a certain crime
is
morally justified if and only if it would likely produce at least as much overall intrinsic value as
would any other alternative punishment. (Timmons, 535) However, this theory has multiple issues
in justifying the death penalty, which would be consider a negative consequence. These issues are
execution of innocent people, financial cost of executions, and the belief that executions are a
deterrence. Execution of innocent prisoners, does not produce an overall net intrinsic value
compared to alternative punishments. According to statistical data collected, as of October 2015,
a total of 156 people have been exonerated while on death row since 1973. A total of 1,414 people
have been executed since that time, meaning one out of ten people on death row are innocent. (
Exoneration of Innocent Men and Women ) This data brings forth the scenario of innocent victims
being killed, by flaws in the criminal justice system. Murderof an innocent individual is not morally
justifiable, because it would fail

Financial Statements Measure The Liquidity And The...
Introduction The financial statements measure the liquidity and the strength of a business. On the
balance sheet; offsets calculate the real value of accounts receivables and fixed assets. Uncollectible
accounts receivables and depreciation reflect the offsets reported on financial statements. In
accordance with generally accepted accounting principles(GAAP); two methods compute the
uncollectible accounts receivable expense. Just like uncollectible accounts offset the value of
accounts receivables; so do depreciationexpenses counteract the value of fixed assets. Also called
contra accounts, the journal entries accumulate and are then recorded on the balance sheet.
Part One Uncollected Receivables The first technique is the write off method. Small companies
with a small number of uncollected accounts receivables, or, bad debts; utilize this process. Once a
customer account becomes worthless, a write off occurs. Immediately, the write off is recorded in
the journal; applied directly to the uncollectible customer account. The first step in this journal
entry; debit the customer s accounts receivable account. In the next entry; credit the allowance for
doubtful accounts. With this process, an accumulation of entries are completed during the period,
as customer accounts become uncollectible. The book Financial Accounting (Duchac, Reeve,
Warren, 2014) states: At the end of a period, Allowance for Doubtful Accounts will normally have a
balance. Second, the

The hatred he showed toward Marty, proved all the more reason not to negotiate with him.
Marty simply lacked the proof to trust and deal with Judd. On the contrary, some people believe
Marty should have made a deal with Judd. They claim that Marty greatly desired to keep Shiloh
for his own and needed to take every chance he came upon to do that. However, this belief is
irrelevant, because while the two deeply loved each other, Shiloh rightfully belonged to Judd.
Judd bought Shiloh with his money and therefore Marty had no right to take him for his own.
Along with this, people also argue that Judd signed the deal making it firm. This argument also
remains inadequate because Marty knew virtually nothing about creating a firm deal. Judd did
indeed sign a paper bag marking the deal, however, Marty lacked a witness and trust in Judd. Judd
s signature meant nothing in causing the deal to remain strong. In fact, it instead caused much
more pain for Marty. Neither of these opposing arguments that Marty desired to keep Shiloh, and
that Judd signed a deal prove any adequate excuse for Marty to make a hasty and foolish deal with

Extrinsic Observation And Motivation In Education As A...
Being an educator is a very challenging job. The slightest things teachers say or do affect the child
s working ability, independence, and motivation. Children look to adults for approval and guidance
so teachers need to make sure they are practicing certain techniques and phrases to get children less
dependent on their approval but rather more independent on their education. It s important that
current and future educators know what to say to children so that they are pushing themselves
to their highest ability rather than taking the easy way out just to please the teacher and get a
sticker. I think that it s vital that intrinsic rewards are used in the classroom rather than extrinsic.
Giving a child a prize or even saying Good job is most certainly the easier way out for teachers to
get children to comply with the desired behavior or task they want done. Extrinsic rewards are
very short term. Though they my work nicely in the time being they are not going to get the
teachers desired results in the future. The children are going to become heavily dependent on
receiving a prize to do expected behavior such as walking quietly in the halls or listening to their
classmates while they are speaking. One extrinsic reward that can actually undermine a child s
sense of pleasure, independence, and interest in school is saying the phrase Good job. (Kohn, P.3)

Her cells were labelled HeLa cells, which derive from the first two letters of her first and last

cells proved to be of immense value as it provided the field of medicine with a tool that led to the

The Relationship between Sensitivity to Reward and Punishment and Eating Behaviours
Courtney Andrews
Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University
Abstract
A study involving 252 participants undergoing the course Biological Psychology was carried out in
order to examine the correlation between sensitivity to reward (SP), Body Mass Index (BMI),
weight and more frequent consumption of unhealthy fast foods, (e.g., high in fat and sugar). The
core results showed the participants found that sensitivity to reward was strongly negatively
correlated with BMI and weight. However, both these correlations are not statistically significant at
the 95% confidence level. Alongside this finding, sensitivity to reward was positively correlated
with unhealthy fast foods, which leads to more frequent consumption of fatty and sugar rich foods.
These values were also not statistically significant. This research needs to consider gender balance
inequality, environmental cues such the accessibility of fast food (e.g., the amount and distance
these restaurants are from their home residence) and one time collection of data used.
The Relationship between Sensitivity to Reward and Punishment and Eating Behaviours
Undoubtedly, the obesity epidemic in western society has never been so prevalent as the rate
continually is climbing. There is an ample body of research that suggests that more frequent

case goddesses, in an unflattering light, fighting like vain beauty queens over which one is more
beautiful. In fact, the very character of these three goddesses is at the least reprehensible and
mirrors the conception of many ancient, male driven societies of women being fickle, disloyal
temptresses. Hera is the paranoid, jealous wife who viciously strikes out at her husband s lovers,
Aphrodite is a kind of divine harlot, and Athena, although the most admirable of the group,
nevertheless gives in to petty emotions and is an odd choice to be guardian of wisdom, since no
women were allowed in the academies or thought of by men as being particularly wise. Thetis
intentions are the exception to the trivial designs of her immortal counterparts, for she is always the
devoted mother of Achilles, trying to do what is best for her son. Athena may give aid to the
Greek cause, but only because she was not picked by Paris as the most fair. The only mortal
woman in the Iliad who seems to have any redeeming qualities, and to whom we are not
introduced for any real amount of time, in contrast to Hecuba, is Andromache, who makes a brief,
yet lasting appearance as Hector s wife. For the most part, however, women in the Iliad are placed
decidedly in the background, at best shown as accessories to their male spouses.

Japanese Culture And Cultural Culture
In today s modern world, we encounter a wide diversity of people from Americans to Japanese.
However, as we encounter such people, we ask ourselves, how much do we know about their culture
or even about their family roots. Personally, the encounters with many Americans have been
peacefully satisfying to point of acknowledging their cultureand traditions. On the other hand, the
Japanese community is still a cloudy subject that needs a clear path of understanding. Therefore, as
more information integrates to our multicultural world, the Japanese community need to be valued,
unified, and appreciated by many other cultures, including ours. The Japanese culturehas a
fascinating and multi faced culture, covering its cultural traditions to... Show more content on

As stated in the InsideJapan website (2017), many younger generations face the challenge that a
job is no longer guaranteed, as well as for employees working in a company for many years. The
website also argues that one and three million young adults have never left their home, resulting
in a decrease in the total tax money to support the Japanese economy and aging population
(InsideJapan, 2017). In other words, as the Japanese community continues to have less young
adults working or even in a part time status, a struggling dilemma to support the elderly
population will become a challenge for the economy and for the culture. On a different note, the
Japanese culture has interesting traditions that shape how the values, beliefs, and social practices
are viewed by others. For example, the Japanese culture has embraced several religions that one
person can practice their entire life. The InsideJapan website supports this information by stating,
This is why they say that in Japan, people are born Shinto, get married Christian, and die
Buddhist (2017). Many religions coincide alongside other religions to have a greater impact on
their followers as it happens in the Japanese culture as in other cultures. Consequently, their values,
beliefs, and social practices can be both different and be same as each other. Social practices and
cultural traditions are also greatly valued by Japanese culture as part of

Did Daniel Francois Malan Contribute To Apartheid In South...
This investigation will explore the question: How did Dr. Daniel Francois Malan negatively
contribute to Apartheid in South Africa beginning in 1948? The focus of this investigation, is
the making of the National Party and Malan s role as a white supremacist in South Africa. The
first source which will be evaluated is Robert Schrire s book Malan to De Klerk , published in
1994 in New York, by St. Martin s Press. The origin of this source is valuable because Schrire
received a Bachelor degree in economics from UCT, followed by his Masters from the School of
International Service in Washington DC, and his PHD from the University of California. Due to his
extensive amounts of education regarding foreign studies, like the information analyzed... Show

Although the situation at first seemed easily comprehensive, but after further investigation, the
actual situation was far more complex. This shows how it is important for historians to search
thoroughly through documents to understand historical events. Unlike a mathematician or a
scientist, being a historian does not instill absolute truth or total understanding regarding an event.
With historical events, there are different interpretations and different viewpoints to be taken into
consideration when drawing conclusions. Sources have values and limitations, which are heavily
analyzed before the source itself is used. Likewise, historians have to find sources, which ideally
line up with the truth. When assessing limitations, if found that my sources seemed to agree with
pointing to Malan for having a large impact and have credible authors which made the limitations
hard to find. I regarded Schrire s novel Malan to De Klerk highly valuable, because it gave insight
into the start of apartheid specifically under Malan s rule who I investigated. Secondly, I
considered the letter sent from Sisulu to Malan valuable because it showed how the people were
oppressed. This also demonstrated contrasting views to Malan, and a firsthand account of an

The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children
The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children proposed an international commitment to prevent
the exploitation of children in pornography, trafficking, prostitution, and other crimes of a sexual
nature. They suggested the commitment in late 2001, and they committed to improving local,
regional, national, and international laws to help combat sexual crimes against minor children.
They developed laws to coordinate agencies and push for laws that help prosecute anyone
conducting illegal activities against children. The cooperation of all countries that accepted the
commitment made it easier for law enforcement to find, track, and eventually prosecute persons
who exploit child for the before mentioned crimes. The CSEC conducted studies on different

The Rise and Fall of the Italian Mafia
La Cosa Nostra and the Five Families of which the surrounding area of New York City is comprised
has drastically altered the culture in the region; transforming industries with brute force and
attracting much public attention. Hollywood focuses on glamorizing the Mafioso lifestyle,
distracting from the true nature of organized crime. Over the past decade, the key opportunities have
been utilized by the Italian Mafia, resulting in a powerful behind the scenes dominance over many
aspects we may not expect. It s gonna be a Cosa Nostra.

Gambling has proven to be one of the more profitable things that the Mafia provides. From their
own private casinos to games for elite clientele, to booking off track bets in Belmont and
Saratoga, their profit margins are tremendous. In the 1920 s Mafia Boss Bonanno started to fix
horse races, betting huge amounts of money on the known outcomes. Fixing boxing matches
was also a favorite of the early crime lords. Sammy The Bull Gravano, John Gotti s ex Underboss
states that charitable casino events in New York from the period of 1970 1995 were most likely
a front for private profiteers. A man named Joe Pistone, an undercover FBI agent who became a
made man, relates to gambling events hosted by Cosa Nostra as having been taken care of by
bribing city officials and local police officers. In the 20th century this has proved very profitable,
but in the last few years has slowed down due to police forces cracking down heavily. Gambling,
however, serves only a limited number of people, and more money can be made on a larger
spectrum.
Extortion along with the threat of violence is a very common practice among the New York
Mafioso, and the Genovese family has used these tactics to substantially gain power in the past
decade. When Lucky Lucchese was a boss, his family took income from virtually all importations
into New York City ports, and the boats of those

Avoid Dietary Patterns
Dietary pattern is essentially an important influence of healthy choices. Diets have various purposes
from altering negative eating habits, promoting weight loss, or sustaining a balanced lifestyle. It is
the basic foundation that impacts the choices we make, whether it is to enhance energy levels or

comes to their diet are small portions, plant based meals, especially legumes, about a few ounces of

Unhealthy choices of processed meats have been linked with cancer, specifically colon cancer.
If everybody consumes more meat, the environmental impact of raising animals over growing
plant crops would need to be considered. The Paleo Diet excludes any form of grains and dairy.
Grains are an important source of carbohydrates, glucose for our brain and muscles. These
carbohydrates provide to energy the billions of gut and are crucial for a strong digestive tract.
Dairy foods are an important source of calcium, protein, Vitamin B12 and riboflavin. Most
people actually do not get enough calcium, which is important in osteoblastic activity with the

Mathematics and Tennis
By: Musse Y.
Course: IB Math SL
Teacher: Dr. Ley
Since I was a kid I had good interest for tennis. I would spend hours just sitting and watching
tennis games. By the time I was 8 years old my dad bought a table tennis(ping pong table). He
taught me how to play and keep a score. At first it was hard to learn, but once I get a hang of it
was one of the best things I learned from my father. I still remember the first time I won a match
between me and my father it felt so good to beat him. If I remember right we played 3 set of games
and he won the 1st set 6 1, I won the 2nd set 6 4, and the I won the 3rd set 6 4 again. I went to
middle school in my country Ethiopia and they had a table ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I took his challenge and like all the students I played he was weak too. I played with him all
semester and he lost in every game. I asked him if there was a table tennis team here at John F.
Kennedy high school so I can join, but his answer was that we don t have table tennis team
because it wasn t that much of a popular sport. Sophomore year I found out that there was a
tennis team in John F. Kennedy but it wasn t table tennis. So I tried out for the Boys Varsity
Tennis team and I was bad at it, but the coche Mr. King who was also at the time my NSL
Government teacher let me join the team. I thought it would be easier because I already knew
how to play table tennis but it was totally different and harder. Within a week I start getting good
at it and by the end of the season i fell in love with tennis. I spent all my summer 2016 practicing
tennis and I got so good at it. In this Mathematics Internal Assessment I will be exploring how is

mechanical principles of any objects that are in spinning motion.

Bottled Water Consumption
In 2010, bottled water consumption within the U.S. was around 28 gallons per person. As a
beverage category, bottled water represented $10.6 billion in annual sales. This category has
grown at an impressive rate. In fact the value of the U.S. bottled water market doubled in less than
a decade.
The success of this product represents a success for marketing. In this discussion thread we will
examine some of the reasons for its success.
Issues to Discuss:
1.Describe the target market for this bottled water. How does bottled water create value for target
market consumers?
Target market refers to a group or customer segment that a firm is interested in selling its product
or services. This is a two way relationship as the potential must ... Show more content on

The shape of the bottle is shaped as a glacier that resembles an ice formation that is different on
each face of the bottle, which is supposed to symbolize the ever changing nature of a glacier.
When it comes to product and distribution Icelandic is carbon neutral which is important because
mineral water receives a lot of criticism for leaving a carbon footprint. Icelandic has secured large
deals with companies like Anheuser Bush that help with distribution. They price their water at the
upper end of the range of mineral water which positions their product as premium water. Icelandic
promotes their product at large events such as the Cannes Film Festival and by targeting at such
events it creates an awareness for their brand.
3.Bottled water has come under attack from environmental groups for the amount of waste created
by the bottles. How do you feel this concern about packaging waste will impact sales? How could
the marketing mix elements be used to address this concern?
Sales have seen a negative impact and studies have shown that between 2007 and 2010 Nestle
water the largest water bottler worldwide saw a 12.7 percent decline in sales. According to the
foodandwaterwatcg.org website, bottled water comes with unnecessary costs to the customer as
well as environmental damage from the associated energy consumption, water use and

The Sea Wolf Sparknotes
The Sea Wolf In the novel, The Sea Wolf, by Jack London, there is an abundance of conflict of
drama. This book shows us the true power of corruption. A seal hunting schooner is ruled by a
evil man named Wolf Larsen who rules like a sovereign nation. Throughout the book, the
protagonists experience much death at the hand of Wolf Larsen. He acts like an animal because
he acts on his survival instincts and only cares about survival. The crew on the ships has to
become savage to survive. This is the story of Humphrey Van Weyden who had to learn this the
hard way and use all his survival instinct to overcome the adversity he faced. Even though he is
the main character, we are showed the vile presence of Wolf Larsen throughout the book. We see
how brutal and merciless he treats his crew and how he has no respect for humanlife. He represents
the word evil in every way throughout the book. This is why I believe Wolf Larsen is a evil
person on the outside and at heart. Since the beginning of the book, we can see how Wolf Larsen
acts. We are introduced to him as a puzzling character who seems like a touch and reckless
person. When Van Weyden says that working the schooner is easy work, Wolf mocks him and
says, Strain! Simple as A,B,C! Mathematical certainty! (London 1). After that, we see Wolf when
he rescues Van Weyden from the ship crash. Van Weyden automatically assumes that since they are
only an hour away from San Fransisco, Wolf will take him back. This is where we can

Marketing Mix And Telephone Operator O2
Introduction There is no single indicator of performance but a variety of different measures
which provide an insight into a telephone operator s economic, social, managerial and consumer
perspectives. These may relate to price, quality, user choice or efficiency. A good performance
in one service does not allow one to predict a favourable performance in other aspects and no
operator can claim to be perfect in all of these respects. In a highly competitive business
environment like the telecommunications industry, subscriber based service models are
something of a mandate In markets like these, business successes can be validated by a very low

Describe The Living Condition In Eva s
The living conditions on the camp were previously unseen to the world. The Jews were forced to
live in such extreme conditions they died from sickness, lack of food, or exhaustion. They wernt
fed enough and had to sleep in bunks containing many people per bed. Eva outlines the bed bug
problem in the following quote. She stated, They were sickening bloodsuckers that feasted off
our bodies. There were so many that we would have been covered with them had we not scraped
them off immediately. Even so, our skins were pitted with bites and boils from their attacks. The
way we had to live was disgusting. This example of how they had to sleep was consistent across all
bracks. The bed bugs and lice infestation continued to multiply and people s hopes dwindled in such
gruesome circumstances. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Nazi s knew that the more the prisioners feared death the harder they would work. The less
that they would complain, and it also mitigated the risk of a revolt. For these reasons if someone

they cannot perform manual labor or tough it out to the extreme. When Eva s feet became so
severe that there was no other options she finally folded and went to the hospital, partially
because she wanted to see her mother. The medical facilities were less than abysmal. They we
downright sickening. People were packed into them like cattle being herded by their owner. Forced

flesh and death hit my nostrils. (Evelyn, Kent, Page 118) This description yet again points back to
the erosion of any human dignity. The erosion of empathy from their captures. The dehumanization

  • 2. Short Term Memory By strengthening an existing synapse in some way you can create a neural pathway in a short time. There are many local short term memory circuits in the brain. Biochemical modification and rehearsal of synapses mediates the short term memory function. The hippocampus releases fresh memory traces with the cortex, eventually blending memorypatterns in the cortex via gene expression into the protein modified synapses of long term memory. The blending process could take days or even weeks for deeply set long term memory. So synapses in the cortex that were first circuits for the short term memory became through rehearsal and blending molecularly engraved as long term memory.[7] An individual neuron can be a part of a lot of memory patterns. The thousands of synapses of its dendritic tree will have different activity configurations for each of the memory patterns in which it participates.[7] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The start of their boundless achievements started when they were in high school on one of the computer terminals. All of their free time and little money were spent working in that high school terminal. The development that really instated everything in the business sense was when they read an article in 1971, in the business magazine regarding Intel s 4004 chip. Soon they both got access about the chip and decided that they both knew how to make the microprocessor better. Later that year the company Intel came up with an upgraded chip called the 8008. They were both very cautious entrepreneurs. The difference in their roles of the company was that, Allen was the one always wanting new technology, and Gates was more absorbed in doing negotiations, contracts, and professional deals. They gained more knowledge as their company continuously grew. Microsoft s basic business plan was to alter prices so that computer makers could not do it for less in house. Texas Instruments gave Microsoft one of their biggest contracts where TI bid $99,000 providing programming languages for a home computer TI was going to make. Microsoft then started selling to Japanese companies they were so overpromised that it was ridiculous. Sometimes their business would get a little terrifying. • 5. The Effect Of Pictorial Condition And Verbal Condition Essay The effect pictorial condition and verbal condition have on the number of correct responses in a memory test Abstract The aim of the experiment was to test whether pictures or words would lead to an increased recognition response. The picture superiority effect suggests that pictures are better recognised than words. This is shown by supporting researchers. Standing et al (1970) found that participants who studied over 2000 pictures, 90% of those had accurately recognised them after several days. Paivio had also suggests that pictures are dual coded which explains why pictures are better remembered than words, which is encoded once in memory. In order to investigate whether pictures or words are best recognised participants were split into two conditions, pictorial and verbal. In the verbal condition participants saw words after being presented with pictures for 10 seconds whilst the pictorial condition saw pictures. This therefore measured the participants correct recognition response in both the pictorial condition and verbal condition. The participant completed 48 trials in each condition. Introduction Memory can be described as our ability to recall information from past experience, store, retrieve, and encode information from the brain. In some occasions, this force can be useful such as in the case where vehicles are making turns. In these cases, the frictional forces provide the needed force to stay on the track. In this experiment, we used a force sensor and a computer to determine the friction of a sliding block with and without different masses on it. Procedure Description of setup We connected the force sensor to the labquest, and from the latter to the computer. A string was then tied to the hook on the woodblock and the other end to the force sensor s hook. Photo below. The range switch on the force sensor was set to 10N. After this, the logger pro was launched and the setup was zeroed. To zero the setup, there had to be no tension in the string; then we hit the Р¤ looking button to zero. Outline of technique It was necessary to know the mass of the woodblock throughout this experiment. So, its mass was weighed and recorded in the table below. A 1 kg mass was then, placed on the top of the woodblock. From here, we were ready to pull the force sensor and see what results we get on the graphs. A small force was applied to the force sensor and then pulled hard enough to set the system in motion. The pulling was continued for some time and it was done steadily and at the same pace. Various other massed were tested and the resulting frictions that they produced are recorded ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why Is Running On A Treadmill Speech Good morning / afternoon My speech will be done on Is running on a treadmill more effective then running on the road Running in general is a full body exercise, no matter if it s on a treadmill or just running on open road. • 9. Summary Of Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep Throughout Philip K. Dick s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? we see the main character, Rick Deckard become steadily more empathetic towards the androids. However, the crux of this change in his perspective is observed in his attempt to kill Luba Luft and the turmoil he feels afterwards. In Dick s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Luba Luft is one of the most human androids of the story and it is this trait that makes it so hard for Rick to kill her. She acts just as a young girl would, exhibiting innocence and naivety. This is observed in how absorbed 2. fig. Having one s attention fully or intensely engaged in; captivated, engrossed (OED online, 2) she is in the painting, puberty . Luba is taking part in the inherently human act of enjoying art so much so that she is absorbed in the picture before her (122), not even noticing the two bounty hunters set to kill her. The vulnerability exhibited by Luba through these actions is mirrored in the painting she is so engrossed in: a drawing of a young girl, hands clasped together, seated on the edge of a bed, an expression of bewildered wonder and new, groping awe imprinted on the face (122). The girl in the painting is nude and undergoing Puberty , a vulnerable stage in a young girl s life in which she becomes a woman; Luba is attempting to undergo her own puberty , trying to transition into becoming a human being and not just another android. Rick s changing views on androids is not only illustrated by his growing empathy towards them but also in how he thinks of them. He begins to associate human traits with them seeing them more as people than objects. This new view of androids is contrasted to Phil Resch s view of them when he attempts to murder Luba and Rick tries to persuade him not to. Phil continually refers to Luba and other androids as it (124), objectifying them. To Phil, the androids are not people at all: they are objects. Whereas Rick refers to Luba as her (122), this difference in pronouns illustrates that Rick sees Luba as a human being. Rick s behaviour towards Luba and androids in general has changed ... Ginny tolerates Larry s insolent behaviour and ever since their mother s death, both Ginny and Rose make him breakfast every morning and obeyed the demands made by their father. Rose sarcastically tells Ginny, You re such a good daughter, so slow to judge, it s like stupidity (Smiley, 162). Rose s statement proves the type of person Ginny is selfless and nurturing. • 22. City of God Analysis Kellene Berry Sociology 1 Kolstad 05/23/2012 City of God Application and Analysis The movie City of God has many examples of sociological theories of crime and deviance. Some of the major theories I noticed throughout the movie were the functionalist theory, including examples of relative depravation, as well as the interactionist theory, including differential association and labeling. There was also evidence of the conflict theory and the control theory throughout the film. The functionalist theory states that hard work leads to rewards, and when these rewards are not sufficient, deviance arises. Crime and deviance result from structural tensions and a lack of moral regulation within society (Giddens). An example of this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conflict theory says that crime and deviance is a result of economic inequalities. If the families in the movie had money, they would have no desire to be deviant and commit robbery. One example of the control theory in the movie was the fact at how easily the children were committing crimes. The control theory says that crime results from an imbalance between impulses toward criminal activity and social or physical controls that deter it (Giddens). It seemed that all of the children in the City of God had guns, but not one of the people they robbed had a gun. This made it fairly easy for kids to rob others who are unarmed. Also the kids were allowed to run around the city without any parental supervision. Even the police had a hard time catching the youths after they committed crimes. These factors allowed the children to be deviant with no reprimanding what so ever. In conclusion the movie City of God was an excellent example of the many sociological theories discussed in class. The movie demonstrated the functionalist theory, the interactionist theory, the conflict theory and even the control theory. It provided a prime example of the work of many sociologists, such as Emil Durkheim, Robert Merton, Edwin Sutherland, Edwin Lemert, Karl Marx and many others. Each of these sociological theories was helpful in understanding the crime and deviance in the movie. Works Cited Giddens, Anthony, Mitchell Duneier, Richard Appelbaum, and ... • 23. Pros And Cons Of Sociological Theories One of the main things sociology tries to explain is where sociology comes from. Social order can begin to be explained through four theories looking at an individual or a group, and whether the decisions they make are rational or irrational. The first theory is the exchange theory. The exchange theory says that individuals make a rational choice to enter into relationships to get something out of it. This is the theory criminal justice professionals use to see criminals. People make a rational choice whether or not to commit a crime by weighing the pros and cons. Laws are enacted to make the scale lean more towards the con side to deter crime. The next rational theory is the conflict theory. The conflict theory says that people come together ... Capital punishment has been a process of punishment since time before Christ. Capital punishment or the death penalty, is the process of punishing, an individual, by execution for committing a crime. One moral theory to justify this process of punishment is cited in Mark Timmons s book Disputed Moral Issues: A Reader. The consequentialist theory states, A specific punishment for a certain crime is morally justified if and only if it would likely produce at least as much overall intrinsic value as would any other alternative punishment. (Timmons, 535) However, this theory has multiple issues in justifying the death penalty, which would be consider a negative consequence. These issues are execution of innocent people, financial cost of executions, and the belief that executions are a deterrence. Execution of innocent prisoners, does not produce an overall net intrinsic value compared to alternative punishments. According to statistical data collected, as of October 2015, a total of 156 people have been exonerated while on death row since 1973. A total of 1,414 people have been executed since that time, meaning one out of ten people on death row are innocent. • 30. Financial Statements Measure The Liquidity And The... Introduction The financial statements measure the liquidity and the strength of a business. On the balance sheet; offsets calculate the real value of accounts receivables and fixed assets. Uncollectible accounts receivables and depreciation reflect the offsets reported on financial statements. In accordance with generally accepted accounting principles(GAAP); two methods compute the uncollectible accounts receivable expense. Just like uncollectible accounts offset the value of accounts receivables; so do depreciationexpenses counteract the value of fixed assets. Also called contra accounts, the journal entries accumulate and are then recorded on the balance sheet. Part One Uncollected Receivables The first technique is the write off method. Small companies with a small number of uncollected accounts receivables, or, bad debts; utilize this process. Once a customer account becomes worthless, a write off occurs. Immediately, the write off is recorded in the journal; applied directly to the uncollectible customer account. The first step in this journal entry; debit the customer s accounts receivable account. In the next entry; credit the allowance for doubtful accounts. With this process, an accumulation of entries are completed during the period, as customer accounts become uncollectible. The book Financial Accounting (Duchac, Reeve, Warren, 2014) states: At the end of a period, Allowance for Doubtful Accounts will normally have a balance. Second, the ... The slightest things teachers say or do affect the child s working ability, independence, and motivation. Children look to adults for approval and guidance so teachers need to make sure they are practicing certain techniques and phrases to get children less dependent on their approval but rather more independent on their education. It s important that current and future educators know what to say to children so that they are pushing themselves to their highest ability rather than taking the easy way out just to please the teacher and get a sticker. I think that it s vital that intrinsic rewards are used in the classroom rather than extrinsic. Giving a child a prize or even saying Good job is most certainly the easier way out for teachers to get children to comply with the desired behavior or task they want done. Extrinsic rewards are very short term. Though they my work nicely in the time being they are not going to get the teachers desired results in the future. The Relationship between Sensitivity to Reward and Punishment and Eating Behaviours Courtney Andrews Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University Abstract A study involving 252 participants undergoing the course Biological Psychology was carried out in order to examine the correlation between sensitivity to reward (SP), Body Mass Index (BMI), weight and more frequent consumption of unhealthy fast foods, (e.g., high in fat and sugar). The core results showed the participants found that sensitivity to reward was strongly negatively correlated with BMI and weight. However, both these correlations are not statistically significant at the 95% confidence level. Alongside this finding, sensitivity to reward was positively correlated with unhealthy fast foods, which leads to more frequent consumption of fatty and sugar rich foods. These values were also not statistically significant. The myth of how the war between the Greeks and the Trojans began, itself, shows women, in this case goddesses, in an unflattering light, fighting like vain beauty queens over which one is more beautiful. In fact, the very character of these three goddesses is at the least reprehensible and mirrors the conception of many ancient, male driven societies of women being fickle, disloyal temptresses. Hera is the paranoid, jealous wife who viciously strikes out at her husband s lovers, Aphrodite is a kind of divine harlot, and Athena, although the most admirable of the group, nevertheless gives in to petty emotions and is an odd choice to be guardian of wisdom, since no women were allowed in the academies or thought of by men as being particularly wise. Thetis intentions are the exception to the trivial designs of her immortal counterparts, for she is always the devoted mother of Achilles, trying to do what is best for her son. Athena may give aid to the Greek cause, but only because she was not picked by Paris as the most fair. The only mortal woman in the Iliad who seems to have any redeeming qualities, and to whom we are not introduced for any real amount of time, in contrast to Hecuba, is Andromache, who makes a brief, yet lasting appearance as Hector s wife. Although the situation at first seemed easily comprehensive, but after further investigation, the actual situation was far more complex. This shows how it is important for historians to search thoroughly through documents to understand historical events. Unlike a mathematician or a scientist, being a historian does not instill absolute truth or total understanding regarding an event. With historical events, there are different interpretations and different viewpoints to be taken into consideration when drawing conclusions. Sources have values and limitations, which are heavily analyzed before the source itself is used. Likewise, historians have to find sources, which ideally line up with the truth. When assessing limitations, if found that my sources seemed to agree with pointing to Malan for having a large impact and have credible authors which made the limitations hard to find. I regarded Schrire s novel Malan to De Klerk highly valuable, because it gave insight into the start of apartheid specifically under Malan s rule who I investigated. Secondly, I considered the letter sent from Sisulu to Malan valuable because it showed how the people were oppressed.
