The First Three Noble Truths
Throughout this paper, I will be discussing the first three Noble Truths. I will first explain each of the
three Noble Truths. Then I will explain how each of the three Noble Truths would be extremely
beneficial to my life. The first of the three Noble Truths concerns the diagnosis of humanity. That is to
say, all humans have a fundamental problem and that problem is suffering. This fundamental problem
is not something that one can hide from or ignore. It is something that calls for reflection coming to
terms with the brute fact that human existence is attached to suffering. Suffering is ubiquitous. That is
to say, suffering pervades all of human life. Therefore, all persons must accept suffering as a mere fact
of existence. Suffering consists of, physical, mental and emotional suffering. For example, physical
suffering would consist of having a disease, or getting into an injury such as a car accident. Mental
suffering would consist of one who experiences depression, sadness and the like from the death of a
loved one. Moreover, when one experiences frustration and anger from not getting what they want
such as a baby who is hungry and cries or a child at a store and their parents won t buy them a toy.
Emotional suffering is They have to take medicine to help their own body sustain itself. Buddha states,
This, monks is the Noble Truth of Suffering; birth is suffering; decay is suffering; illness is suffering;
death is suffering; presence of objects we hate is suffering;

Caroline Chisholm 1808 1877
Humanitarian, community advocate and aid to immigrants, Caroline Chisholm spent her life in the
service of others. Her legacy of good will and economic empowerment spans several continents and
several decades. Mrs. Chisholm advocated for immigrant women and girls in India, England and
Australia. Because of her faith, Mrs. Chisholm was met with much opposition. As a Catholic in a time
where Catholicism was viewed with mistrust and disdain, she had to overcome barriers simply
because of her belief system even though if anything, her beliefs helped to motivate her to do all the
great work she did for immigrant women and girls.
Born in 1808 to a well off British family and married to Captain Archibald Chisholm at the age of 22.
Mrs. Chisholm was born into a Protestant family but converted to Catholicism when she married her
husband who was Catholic. Mrs. Chisholm began her first philanthropic endeavor in 1832 by
founding the Female School of Industry for the Daughters of European Soldiers in Madras, India,
where her husband was stationed. Upon witnessing the horrible conditions of poverty, crime and
prostitution the wives and families of British soldiers faced she appealed to the Madras government to
allow her to help. Granted permission to start her school, she taught the women and girls important
subjects such as reading and writing as well as

Present Wireless Scenario Consists Of Homogeneous Network...
Present wireless scenario consists of homogeneous network and heterogeneous networks. In
homogeneous network each base station has similar transmit power level, antenna pattern, receiver
noise floor and similar backhaul connectivity. But this type of network has disadvantage of coverage
hole. In heterogeneous network the macro BSs is collocated with micro, pico and femto cells. This
arrangement increases overall spectral efficiency per unit area (capacity) of the network. Whereas
small cell like micro, pico, femto and relays are used to avoid coverage hole and to provide mobility
to the users. Not only this relays can be used to provide backhaul connectivity, where wire line link is
not possible or are expensive to deploy. As determined by the information theoretic capacity limits,
current cellular systems have evolved to a point where a system with one BS achieves near optimal
performance. Researchers are now moving towards more advanced heterogeneous network topology
which will bring the network more closely to the mobile user leading to further capacity gains [46 49].
HetNets will significantly improve the spectral efficiency per unit area by utilizing a diverse set of
BSs. 1.4 Elements of Heterogeneous Network Heterogeneous deployment need to use innovative cell
association and inter celling interference coordination techniques in order to realize the promised
capacity and coverage gains. A typical heterogeneous wireless technology as shown in figure 1.4 has

Family Law Research Paper
Family law is an area of law that is very interesting to me. Many people are unaware of exactly what
family law is and what it deals with. Most believe that family law is marriage, divorce, child
custody, and murders between members of a family. Their thoughts are indeed correct, but
family law is so much more than that. Below I will discuss my reasons for choosing family law,
plaintiff/defendant,and the tasks of the paralegal.
Family law is an important body of law that defines relationships, rights, and duties in the formation,
ongoing existence, and dissolution of marriage and other family units. If I were to choose an area of
law to work in,it would definitely be family law. I feel that this is a job that will continue to grow and

JIT Manufacturing and Inventory Control System Essay
JIT Manufacturing and Inventory Control System Since the dawn of human existence evolution in all
sectors of society has occurred due to Economic factors. This has mainly happened due to the fact that
all technological achievements have occurred in favor of money.
Specifically we can admit that Economy is the main reason for growth and development. By these
means it is in our interest to establish strong economies either as societies (macroeconomics) or as
individuals (microeconomics). For these reasons several techniques and methods have been initiated
in order help modern individuals to develop. Such techniques are usually Accounting or ... Show more

By these means the company is never overstocked and that has as an affect that the company will
never have a liquidity problem since assets as stock of goods are smaller and cash is bigger. Another
reason for this to happen is the fact that Just in time manufacturing is a philosophy of eliminating non
value added activities and increasing product quality throughout the manufacturing process (Meigs,
Bettner, p. 804).
But how can we control if our Just in time manufacturing system is efficient? The answer to that is
given by Meigs and Bettner : A widely used measure of efficiency in a Just in time system is the
Manufacturing Efficiency ratio (p. 805). This ratio is given by the Value Added Activities time over
the Cycle time. The cycle time is the time of processing, storing, moving and inspecting that is spent
on the material before their usage. If the ratio is equal to one then we have the perfect Manufacturing
efficiency ratio. This means that the smaller the number the less efficient is our Just in Time
manufacturing method and the larger are the Value added activities.
Finally we can conclude that if we perform the Just in

What Are The Challenges Of The Khmer Empire
It s interesting to learn and to understand that many of the challenges society confronts today such as
urban planning, religion, agriculture and trading and the impacts of climate change were challenges
also experienced during the Khmer Empire between C.802 C.1431. A lot of these challenges were key
features of everyday life in the Angkor/Khmer Empire. Some of the key features included trade and
agriculture, religion, water management, and the social structure.
Agriculture and trade played an important role in the Khmer Empire due to the Mekong River, rice
paddies, the Funan and the Zhenla. The rice paddies were developed when the monsoon rain flooded
the Mekong River, which then spread into the Tonle Sap and as the water spreads across ... Show more

In this empire there was two types of religion and these were Buddhism and Hinduism, however
before the religions grew the people believed in spirits. There were two different types of spirits and
these were ancestor spirits and nature spirits. According to the Religion section in the Cambridge
History Textbook it states that people throughout Cambodia left a little food, alcohol or flowers to
please the spirits. After a while the worship of the spirits began to die down allowing Hinduism and
Buddhism to flourish. With reference to many sources such as
http://empireofthekhmer.weebly.com/religion.html and
http://khmerknowledgekeepers.weebly.com/everday life in the khmer empire.htmlit, it tells us that
Hinduism was the main religion in Angkor and focused on the worship of three gods, Brahma, Shiva,
and Vishnu. The religion stresses the importance of good order, harmony and the balance of good and
evil between the gods. According to the Angkor Wat picture (bottom of page) All people in the Khmer
empire worshiped the gods resulting in the Empire becoming very religious and the building of
Angkor Wat. Buddhism was the second most popular religion in Angkor. According to the Cambridge
History Textbook, Buddhism is the belief of a person named Buddha who came from a wealthy family
and lived a life of luxury. Buddha then started to realize there was a world of suffering outside his life.

Pros And Cons Of Wild Horses
While there are millions of acres of public land for these wild horses to be kept on, there are also
many other animals on the land too, leading to either fully removing the wild horses or introducing
predators. Suzanne Roy, director of the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, points out that
the horses are not actually overpopulated, Wild horses aren t overpopulated, just overcrowded by
cattle which graze the same land (Graslie). Roy also states in Serri Graslie s article that there is a more
natural way to take care of this problem of there being too many horses, That can mean removing
cattle and introducing more natural predators. Others talk about how the horses are overcrowded due
to other animals that should be removed too,

Pro Choice And Pro Life Arguments
Abortion is defined by Merriam Webster as the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by,
resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus (Merriam Webster, n.d.). Abortion
is always a passionate topic of debate for anybody. Whether it s a debate for an elected government
position or friends just sitting around drinking coffee, abortion is a topic that has the potential to get
emotionally out of hand. Activists for abortion, also known as Pro choice, fight on behalf of the soon
to be mother to choose to take the pregnancy to term or to terminate the pregnancy prior to the child s
birth and not be stopped by the government or any religious organizations. Activists contrary to

For example, should a person injure or kill a mother and her unborn child, intentionally or
unintentionally, during the event of a crime the person will be charged with the appropriate crime of
two people instead of one. The law also defines what is considered to be a human. It states that any
unborn child in the mother s womb at any point in time of the pregnancy is considered to be human
(Hart, 2004). As of 2015, 38 states have laws similar to the Federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act
also known as fetal homicide laws. 23 of those state laws go as far as applying the law to the initial
phases of pregnancy instead of after a certain period of time (Frantz, 2016). For example, someone in
the state of Arkansas cannot be charged with the homicide of an unborn child until after 12 weeks
gestation whereas someone in the state of Arizona can be charged with the homicide of an unborn
child at any point in time while the child is in the mother ( Key Facts, 2004). Another argument is
abortions are painful for an unborn child to go through. While most abortions are usually done prior to
the end of the first trimester there are abortions that are done in the second or third trimester. The
medical community has different views on whether or not an unborn child can feel pain before 20
weeks. Some doctors will say a child can feel pain at as soon as eight weeks while others will say they
won t be able to feel pain until after the 20 weeks mark.

Upon waking up from his nap, the man becomes very confused when he finds a severed human leg in
the bed beside him. He quickly throws the leg out of his bed and ends up on the floor beside the bed.
He is angry, and refuses to get back in the bed. He is confused, and complaining, that someone has

He came to the neurologist to have testing done on what the doctors described as, a lazy, left leg . In

How Did Zollverein Contribute To The Unification Of Germany
German nationalism was a crucial part of the country s unification that developed over time. Germany
s nationalism began during the Napoleonic Wars of 1799 to 1815. France s leader at the time,
Napoleon, lead in the invasion of German territory. This destruction prompted Germany s bourgeoisie
to want a modern German nation state with its own cultural identity. The state would ideally be built
on liberal democracy, constitutionalism, representation, and popular sovereignty. The Treaty of Vienna
was created after the Napoleonic Wars in attempt to establish a German nation state. Instead, a
collection of German states that lacked strong federal institutions joined together under Prussian rule.
This was known as a Customs Union, or Zollverein. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tensions between the two states developed with the rise of Otto von Bismarck, a political figure of
Germany, to power. In 1848, an all German parliament in Frankfurt was created. The goal of this
parliament was to make a constitution for all German states. The series of liberal revolutions that had
occurred over time reached a climax when people rebelled against the parliament, mainly because of
Prussia and Austria s rivalry. This caused supporters of the parliament to advocate a small German
nation state with Austria excluded (Gale). As this revolution took place, Bismarck was persuaded to
reenter the government in order to protect the monarchy. Bismarck attended the Frankfurt Parliament
and made his traditionalist opinions known through speeches. Bismarck was then appointed envoy to
the Bundestag in 1851, which is when he began to gain power (Otto Gale). As can be seen, a
parliament was created as an attempt to unify all German states, but tensions between Prussia and
Austria caused a rebellion against the constitution. In an attempt to end the rebellion, some of the
promoters of the parliament opened up the idea of a unified Germany without Austria to the Prussian

Communicative Competence And Cognitive Competence Essay
In the previous chapter, the literature on communicative competence has been discussed. The
researcher began with defining communicative competence and briefly talked about four theories and
five theoretical frameworks. Later on, the researcher talked about elements of communicative
competence as well as its sub elements and how to teach them with relations to the four language
skills. Finally, the researcher discussed communicative language teaching (CLT) as it depends on
communicative competence in its basis. So far, in this chapter, the researcher will talk about the
research design as well as the methodological tools that will be used in collecting data.
3.1 Research design and methods
3.1.1 Research design Research design provides the procedures by which the researcher can collect
the required data for answering the research questions. According to Griffee, a research design is an
operating model or blueprint for a research project, which accounts for internal reasoning (causality)
and external reasoning (generalizability) (41).
Interestingly, the researcher thoroughly consulted the existing knowledge in the field of
communicative competence so that he could get a clear and precise design to investigate the present
research problem. Particularly to what extent secondary school teachers of English language focus on
elements of communicative competence while they teach English as a school subjects to their students

Summary Of The Stranger By Albert Camus
My silent sustained reading book is The Stranger written by Albert Camus. It was first published by
Hamish Hamilton in 1946. Even though the story was written eight decades ago, the message Camus
was trying to convey is still pliable to current day.
The novel starts off with the narrator, Guy Meursault, just receiving news of his mother s passing and
her funeral that takes place the following day. Meursault shows no signs of remorse over losing his
own mother and even refuses to look at his own mother s body. Once the funeral was over the narrator
meets up with his former employee, who he takes to see a comedy movie and starts a relationship with
her. In the following days, Meursault assists his neighbor Raymond Sintès in exacting ... Show more

The story s protagonist is Guy Meursault, a Frenchman in his late thirties. While the protagonist is a
man, the antagonist is society itself. Society is the one who finds Meursault guilty, just because he
cannot grasp its composition. He finds it difficult to comprehend his own actions as wrong due to his
own logic of society. While the story takes place in Algeria, which is a country in North Africa, it feels
as if it could have taken place anywhere. In spite of the topic of the story, which is concerning death,
the tone of Camus writing makes it seem as if the narrator is uncaring and indifferent to the topic.
Throughout his mother s death and his neighbor s cruel acts Meursault doesn t feel anything about
these things; the author makes it appear that the protagonist is heartless and cold. The narrator seems
to have no reason not to believe Sintès story about his girlfriend and even helps him emotionally and
physically hurt her.
The point of view in the book is first person, which allows the audience to understand Meursault s
thoughts and opinions. We are able to hear that he feels no remorse for any of this actions and even
thinks of death as something trivial for it is part of everyday life. I feel that if the story wasn t in first
person the story would not be renown as a classic. For without the narrator s perspective Camus book
would not be known for describing the human condition. The central

When thinking of a flame most people think of a campfire. When starting a fire it starts with a spark,
but very dull. As it continues to grow it gains a brighter light, the novel is just like this. The rebellion
in Montag s heart is very dull, but by the end, it is a bright bonfire. Most of the kindling is collected
and put onto the fire at this part. When he has to burn down his own house it makes it so he has
nothing to lose, it shows that he is like a phoenix. The novel says that he felt like his old life was
buried under the debris (Bradbury 118). He is reborn as not the old Montag that society wanted, but
the true Montag that has been hiding inside of him, waiting to burst free. The true Montag gains a
brighter fire while talking to the book people. They nurture him in the short time the novel shows
them together. They bring about his fire, but it is not them that brings the brightest point of Montage,
it is the bombing of the city. The bombing causes it so Montag can remember what he has read, and
that is the highest point of his fire (Bradburry 165). He has a purpose, a better one than book burning,

the Iraqis that to have its wheat contract processed it would have to pay US$700 000 into the same

The Wife of Bath is liked by Chaucer because she is distinctive. Her distinctive traits make her

Both hedge funds and index funds stem from the idea of an independent mutual fund, but their
potential to succeed is dependent upon the economy performing well. The success of all investments,
whether a bull or bear market, are significantly driven by the performance of the overall economy.
Economics explains how people interact within markets to gain what they want or to accomplish their
goals. The market usually either has falling prices, which means a bear market and when flourishing
this is referred to as the bull market. The United States is a market economy, which means the
financial decisions and the pricing of goods and services are guided primarily by the aggregate
interactions of a country s citizens and businesses. In other words, market economies have little
government intervention or central planning (Investopedia). In addition to the performance of the
overall market, the returns for individuals are impacted by a company s management team. The
managers of investment funds either invest or trade investment instruments for the fund. Investing and
trading are two different strategies to achieve investment returns. The goal of investing is to gradually
build wealth over an extended period of time through the buying and holding of a portfolio of stocks,
baskets of stocks, mutual funds, bonds and other investment instruments (Investopedia). Trading, on
the other hand, involves the more frequent buying and selling of stocks,

Evolution Of Justice
How has justice evolved throughout world history?
When children are young they are expected to follow rules precisely and if they break a rule, then they
are typically forced to take a timeout. In a child s eyes, a time out is a horrible and miserable time
when they are compelled to think about what they did wrong. But even though a timeout is considered
harsh in the child s eyes it still establishes justice between the child who broke the rule and who was
affected by that child s choice. As the child grows older, it realizes that justice doesn t have to
established through a set of rules, but that justice can be achieved through kindness. In the same way,
the idea of justice has changed over time in the way of justice has become less strict ... Show more

In this example, Jesus is giving a sermon to people from various areas of Africa. Therefore, whoever
breaks even the smallest of the commandments and teaches others to do the same will be least in the
kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys the Law, and teaches others to do the same will
be great in the kingdom of heaven (The Sermon on the Mount 30 C.E.). This exemplifies that if one
was to break a commandment, he would face little to no severe punishment. Although the individual
would face little punishment, if they did nothing to make the situation right they would face
punishment spiritually or after death. However, Jesus did not only ensure punishment but also made
good promises for those who were obedient. (God speaking to Moses) From this you know that now,
if you obey my voice and hold fast to my covenant, you of all the nations shall be my very own for all
the earth is mine. I will count you a kingdom of priests, a consecrated nation (The Covenant Code,
Exodus 20:19 23:33). This portrays that those who did not obey God s covenant would not receive the
good things that he promised but they would, however, get away with facing little punishment
physically. On the whole, throughout history, justice becomes less about relentlessly punishing and
following every rule word for word but more about benefitting from being

The Communication Theory Of Uncertainty Reduction Theory
Stuttering, perspiring, and feeling a dry mouth are a few things someone who has to meet and interact
with new people might experience. Interacting with new people will come with dealing with
uncertainty jitters. This research looks at the different critiques by communication scholars on the
communication theory of Uncertainty Reduction Theory. Uncertainty Reduction Theory is a
communication theory that came about through the research of Charles Berger from the post positivist
tradition.
Charles Berger through Uncertainty Reduction Theory proposes that the beginnings of personal

Using quantitative and qualitative data in a study, the researcher nulls the weaknesses (Creswell,
2014). Creswell (2014) states the core assumption of this form of inquiry is that the combination of
qualitative and quantitative approaches provides a more complete understanding of a research problem
than either approach alone . Researchers who hold different philosophical positions may find mixed
methods research to be difficult because of their different beliefs (Greene, 2007). However, mixed
methods research also represents an opportunity to change these tensions into fresh knowledge
through discovery. A pragmatic perspective draws using diverse approaches, giving primacy to the
importance of the research problem and question, and valuing both objective and subjective
knowledge (Morgan, 2007). A transformative perspective offers an orienting framework for a mixed
methods study based on creating a more just and democratic society that permeates the entire research
process, from the problem to the conclusions, and the use of results (Mertens, 2009).

Political Implications On Aboriginal Family Life And...
Introduction
My research paper will examine how racialized political implications impact aboriginal family life and
intimate relations. The central issues in this paper will focus on social and political historical
oppressions such as the Sixties Scoop, The Indian Act, and Residential Schooling, to examine how
colonialism has, and still negatively affects intimate relations within aboriginal families and
communities, and their ways of doing family .
The Indian Act illustrates how government policy on the macro level, shapes micro level privileges
and exclusions for aboriginals based on citizenship. Mandatory residential schooling stripped children
of their culture, and predisposed survivors to mental health issues and strained parent child
relationships for future generations. The Sixties Scoop ripped families apart by disrupting intimate
relations within the family.
Aboriginal people s culture and traditions have been under attack through colonial and prejudicial
attitudes, having negative consequences for Aboriginal families as a whole. Residential Schools, The
Indian Act, and The sixties scoop, inspired by the Canadian governments political strive for nation
building, has had severe repercussions on Aboriginal family life, exposing how interlocking
dimensions of race, class, gender, and citizenship impact the Aboriginal family. I argue that racialized
political implications imposed by the Canadian government such as compulsory residential schooling,

She encourages all children to participate by preventing students from just shouting out the answer

Everyday Life And Existence In Thornton Wilder s Our Town
Throughout time, many things have changed dramatically. Technology, food, culture, and the quality
of life are just a few examples of how our life has been altered. However, there is one thing that has
not changed much: the view of human life and existence. Humans want and have the need to be
unique, yet this is just an implausible figment of the imagination. Life unveils itself for everyone in
the same way when it comes to love, death, and other worldly things. Everyone has the intention of a
perfect life. Thornton Wilder looks into the idea of the similarities of everyday life and existence in his

love is important and a significant part in life; she must have believed that if she lived with her

Emily, I think that once you ve found a person that you re very fond of...I mean a person who s fond

The Impact Of Gender On Organizational Work Unit Teams
The Impacts of Gender on Organizational Work Unit Teams
Nada Nafissa
Morgan State University
The influence of women in society has undergone a paradigm shift in America over the last century.
Indeed, women have gone from being solely relegated to the roles of mother and housewife to
legislators and CEOs, from not having the basic right to vote to being elected officials, Supreme Court
Justices and frontrunners for the office of President of the United States. But while the power of
women in society has grown exponentially during this time, American society remains largely
bureaucratic and male dominated in many ways. Gender differences remain part of the American
landscape, and throughout the world. While America can be viewed as setting the bar for women s
rights on a global scale, gender inequity remains part of the fabric of our society. This multi
disciplinary study will concentrate on the identification of the impacts of gender on organizations and
organizational work unit teams, an ever increasingly important dimension in organizations. It is
expected that findings will include increased productivity of heterogeneous teams across disciplines.

Citizens on Patrol
Citizens on Patrol
What would an individual do to keep their home or neighborhood safe? The answer has become quite
popular over the last few decades. In fact neighborhood prevention is becoming extremely popular as
well as successfully reducing crime in some neighborhoods. One of the major forms of neighborhood
crime prevention is citizen patrol. Citizen patrol or often referred to as citizen on patrol is extremely
popular due to the fact that it solely relies on surveillance. Furthermore, not only do these individuals
volunteer their time to simply observe, they produce dramatic results in the process and work with law
enforcement officers to stop neighborhood crime.

The Citizen on Patrol program is an effective measure of crime prevention for most communities. The

Hip Hop And Its Effect On Society
Many people believe that Hip Hop is detrimental to society. I do believe that a lot of hip hop culture
revolves around negative things, whether it be objectification of women, violence, drugs, pimping, the
care free lifestyle, now worrying about anyone but yourself, and being materialistic. All of that does
not lead society in a good direction. And if you as a black person consider that to be you culture, that
hip hop is your culture, and the hip hop you listen too predominantly promotes things such as violence
rioting, and stealing, then to say that that culture is partially responsible for what is happening is
correct. Before around the time my dad was growing up hip hop was positive, then what starting
happening is NWA (Niggas With Attitude) came out, and all these other groups that were just trying to
tell it how it is or tell it how it was in their hood, constantly pushing violence, violence, and violence.
This became much more acceptable. Anything that permeates the culture the way hip hop has or the
way movies have, they have an effect. Young people have taken on gangster mentalities like, do
whatever you have to do to get by, if you have to sell drugs and murder then do what you have to do,
and if someone disrespects then fight for respect. And all of this that you hear in music affects not
only the black culture but also society as a whole, and if you do not believe that then I believe are
delusional. No one person, no one group of music, no culture is

The Negative Analysis Of Alaska Airline Pilots At Alaska...
For the past ten years, pilots at Alaska Airlines have been underpaid, and now, after merging with
Virgin America, pilots are protesting Alaska s negligence. In 2005, Alaska pilots had pay cuts of 26%
when the airline industry lost an estimated $7.4B (IATA, 2005) due to fuel price surges (James,
Andrea, 2007). Since then, fuel prices have fallen significantly; pilots at Alaska have been paid less
than those at other legacy airlines, such as Delta or United (Glassdoor, 2017). According to self
reporting surveys, Alaska Airline pilots earn on average $107,860 a year while Virgin pilots earn
around $100,00 a year (Glassdoor, 2017). Compared to a legacy airline like Delta, with an average
pilot salary of $137,587 per year (Glassdoor, 2017), Alaska and Virgin do not pay their pilots
competitively. The merger with Virgin increased dissatisfaction with their compensation, leading to
pilots at Alaska speaking out against the company, specifically through the creation of an awareness
campaign This Merger Won t Fly to rally against the inequitable pay ( This Merger Won t Fly , 2017).
Pilots, backed by the support of their unions, are negatively impacting flights and consumers by
leveraging their salience as stakeholders. Although passengers choose airlines based on price, 87% of

Pathology, the science of disease, has assisted in the arrests of countless criminals, uncovering the

Commenting on the realism of Hawthorne s characters, literary critic A. N. Kaul says: A deeply
American writer, Hawthorne is also a peculiarly modern writer. It is true that often he deliberately,
even perversely, shrouds his narratives in a sort of nameless, dateless archaism, and delights too in
calling up figures that seem to belong anywhere but in the real world (1). Hawthorne, after exposing
the surprised people to the sable veil, develops the protagonist through a description of some of his
less exotic, less curious characteristics:
Mr. Hooper had the reputation of a good preacher, but not an energetic one: he strove to win his
people heavenward by mild, persuasive influences, rather than to drive them thither by the thunders of
the Word. The sermon which he now
delivered was marked by the same characteristics of style and manner as the general series of his
pulpit oratory.
However, on this first day of wearing his black veil there is some peculiar difference in Hooper s
sermon:
But there was something, either in the sentiment of the discourse itself, or in the imagination of the
auditors, which made it greatly the most powerful effort that they had ever heard from their pastor s
lips. It was tinged, rather more darkly than usual, with the gentle gloom of Mr. Hooper s temperament.
The subject had reference to secret sin. . . .

it would remain a solid unit in which its foundation would rarely be broken (Harrison, 7). Emperor
Constantine would choose to position the new capitol between the areas of Europe and Asia Minor,
located on a narrow water passage that would stretch from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.
According to an article I found dedicated to the Military of The Byzantines, it stated that this new
capitol known as Constantinople would become one of the most tremendous cities but would also
become home to one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever known, The Byzantine Empire (
Military of the Byzantines , 2015). As the Byzantine Empire began its expansion, it would take control
of multiple countries along the way such as Italy, Greece, Egypt and several more. To take control of
these once dominating regions of the world it would take an incredibly strong ... Show more content

It came to be that one of the main weapons of the Byzantine military was that of spying on their
enemies and gathering extremely specific and precise information on their movement and
whereabouts. This became such an important factor to them that there was a dedicated part of the
emperors administration solely devoted to gathering information on the enemy and relaying it to the
forces out in the field ( Military of the Byzantines , 2015). The Byzantine army was by no means one
of few weapons as they used not only physical objects to dominate opponents but they also used
speed, efficiency and most undoubtedly their minds to out think and out smart any enemy they came

Why Canadian Prohibition Failed
Canada experimented with banning alcohol during the early 20th century. The movement grew out of
the earlier Temperance Movement, which steadily grew in popularity during the mind 19th century.
There are four reasons why prohibition ultimately failed in Canada: (1) it was not really enforced; (2)
it was not truly effective; (3) a shift in popular thought; (4) and loss of public support. (Idea of
Provinces + order) In the end, the government would change its stance from one of illegality to control
and regulation. In order to truly understand Canadian prohibition the prior temperance movement
must be examined. During the 19th century, alcohol was seen as a great evil (citation needed). This
evil harmed the family unit and society. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This motive was to follow into Canada s age of prohibition, thus it is important to mention why the
CTA failed. After the CTA was passed alcohol transactions reduced very little (Citation Warsh). The
Royal Commission on the Effects of the Liquor Traffic in 1895 noted that: The Scott Act [the CTA],
although in force over a large portion of the Province [New Brunswick], is in reality not enforced in
most of the countries, and... in almost every part of the province [New Brunswick] a plentiful supply
is to be had by those who desire to get it.(Citation on 145)
Meaning, that something must have been going on in New Brunswick for there to be such blatant
disregard for the law, but what was it? Well, in the city of Moncton, New Brunswick there is a good
example of the problem like minded law enforcement and crooked bureaucrats. The city of Moncton
used the CTA to issue prohibitory law concerning alcohol in 1879. At this time, like elsewhere in New
Brunswick, liquor trade was still inexistence. In Moncton s case, though the bureaucrats were accused
of allowing the trade to occur so that they could make money, for the city and maybe for themselves,
off the fines for liquor violations. This came to a head in 1881 when a bootlegger was fined based off
the cities prohibition law. The bootlegger, eventually, petitioned New Brunswick s Supreme Court.
They reversed the city court s ruling based on a technicality. They had a quarrel with the date the

The Power Of Knowledge In Berenbury, By Ray Bradbury
The choice of what is done with the power of knowledge lies in the hands of the beholder. In an
advanced society live firemen who have the job of burning houses of those who own books. The
protagonist, a fireman named Guy Montag, begins the story off saying, It was a pleasure to burn
(Bradbury 1). He lives this destructive lifestyle until one day on his way home he encounters Clarisse,
a analytic girl who questions him if he is happy. Her intriguing manner pushes him into not only
stealing books from houses in the process of burning them, but also reading them. Once Montag
realizes why knowledge is considered a burden, he conspires to frame the firemen. During this process
the fire chief, Beatty, discovers what he is doing, and tries to stop him. This results in him killing his
chief and a few of his fellow firemen after he is forced to burn down his own home, only to barely
escape to a camp full of fellow people who share the knowledge of books. The camp watches the city
be bombed, and soon heads to the city to rebuild it from the very beginning, starting with books.
Throughout the roughly 150 pages of this novel Ray Bradbury shows the importance on it how you
use your choices and how they will affect the conclusion. From only the very beginning, our
protagonist and antagonist share the same views on books as each other. Beatty, being a far more
intelligent person than Montag, uses his intellect to harshly mock a woman whilst burning her house.
Beatty ironically quotes a

Poverty Reflection
For my civic or political participation, I volunteered with CPS s GIV day for a poverty simulation.
This is a half a day on the Friday of orientation week is available to first year s students. The students
are able to learn about civic issues like poverty and how Gettysburg College works with the issue and
community. As a member of Gettysburg College, I have volunteered with CPS in many capacities and
have done the poverty simulation as a first year. I also choose this engagement because I have
volunteered or participated in it every year except when I was abroad. This opportunity also allowed
me to complete five of my required hours for my sorority and service fraternity. At the end, GIV day I
an amazing way to get involved on campus, and be reminds about key issues that affect the
community and world.
First year students will come to the College Union Buildings Ballroom on the Friday of Orientation
with little to no idea what they are going to experience for half of the day. They will be assigned a
discussion table, a community group number, and a poverty simulation table number. The day is spit
up in half, where for the first half of the students will go to the community site and the other will go
through the poverty simulation. After both are done, the group will switch.
The students in the poverty simulation are divided into tables, which becomes families, and their goal
is to survive the four weeks. Surviving includes going to work, if they have a job, buying food,

Cool Hand Luke Movie Analysis
The film Cool Hand Luke Directed by Stuart Rosenberg was released in 1967. It was about how Luke
goes through his time in prison. The other film that relates to this film is One Flew Over the Cuckoo s
Nest directed by Miloš Forman was released in 1975. It was about how Randle was put in a psych
ward because everyone thinks he s crazy but helps the other patients and like Luke, Randle both films
had Propp s theory on narrative structure where there are the traditional seven characters and the main
characters were heroes but they don t seem like heroes. They use camera angles to show how the
characters in both films can be known as role models and not heros. In the film Cool Hand Luke how

word. The camera zooms out to show how he walks out of the shower room confident even though he
failed. In the film Cool Hand Luke Luke makes a bet that he can eat 50 eggs and all the other
prisoners made put money on it that he can t. When he won the bet he got money and as a result he got
respect from the prisoners and also their money. At the end of the scene Luke is laying on the table

confidence. By the camera zooming out in both films shows how Randle and luke had confidence. In
the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest one of the patients, Billy Bibbit killed himself because he
felt bad for snitching on Randle and when Randle finds out he attacks Nurse Ratched and no one
would expect him to do that. The camera angle shows a medium shot to see how both characters. It s

The Typographic Mind By Neil Postman
In the beginning of chapter four, The Typographic Mind, Neil Postman delivers an impressive
narrative argument about the impact of print information culture on 17th and 19th century minds.
Postman makes a few claims with respect to the contrasts between the written and spoken word. In
this essay, there are four qualities of the typographic mind: attention span, listening ability, knowledge
of issues, and literary language. First, Postman discusses attention span in reference to America s first
debate between Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln on August 21 1858. Attention span means the
length of time during which a person can concentrate on a subject or idea. Postman first illustrates
about people with disciplined minds who are able to attend and listen to a 4 5 hour lecture. People at
that time can listen and gather information, so they are able to comprehend and structure sentences.
One debate lasted three hours while another in 1858 went seven. Postman guarrateeds that Douglas
and Lincoln who wrote speeches in advance are pure print and they have the power of typography to
get the audience attention because their language was clear. The audiences who attended the debate
must have had an equally extraordinary capacity to comprehend lengthy and complex sentences
aurally (45). Much of it seemed either blindingly obvious, or like the moanings of a killjoy who can t
bear that television is entertaining and that people are unable to process it through the ear , therefore

  • 2. The First Three Noble Truths Throughout this paper, I will be discussing the first three Noble Truths. I will first explain each of the three Noble Truths. Then I will explain how each of the three Noble Truths would be extremely beneficial to my life. The first of the three Noble Truths concerns the diagnosis of humanity. That is to say, all humans have a fundamental problem and that problem is suffering. This fundamental problem is not something that one can hide from or ignore. It is something that calls for reflection coming to terms with the brute fact that human existence is attached to suffering. Suffering is ubiquitous. That is to say, suffering pervades all of human life. Therefore, all persons must accept suffering as a mere fact of existence. Suffering consists of, physical, mental and emotional suffering. For example, physical suffering would consist of having a disease, or getting into an injury such as a car accident. Mental suffering would consist of one who experiences depression, sadness and the like from the death of a loved one. Moreover, when one experiences frustration and anger from not getting what they want such as a baby who is hungry and cries or a child at a store and their parents won t buy them a toy. Emotional suffering is They have to take medicine to help their own body sustain itself. Buddha states, This, monks is the Noble Truth of Suffering; birth is suffering; decay is suffering; illness is suffering; death is suffering; presence of objects we hate is suffering; ... Her legacy of good will and economic empowerment spans several continents and several decades. Mrs. Chisholm advocated for immigrant women and girls in India, England and Australia. Because of her faith, Mrs. Chisholm was met with much opposition. As a Catholic in a time where Catholicism was viewed with mistrust and disdain, she had to overcome barriers simply because of her belief system even though if anything, her beliefs helped to motivate her to do all the great work she did for immigrant women and girls. Born in 1808 to a well off British family and married to Captain Archibald Chisholm at the age of 22. Mrs. Chisholm was born into a Protestant family but converted to Catholicism when she married her husband who was Catholic. Mrs. Chisholm began her first philanthropic endeavor in 1832 by founding the Female School of Industry for the Daughters of European Soldiers in Madras, India, where her husband was stationed. Upon witnessing the horrible conditions of poverty, crime and prostitution the wives and families of British soldiers faced she appealed to the Madras government to allow her to help. Granted permission to start her school, she taught the women and girls important subjects such as reading and writing as well as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Present Wireless Scenario Consists Of Homogeneous Network... Present wireless scenario consists of homogeneous network and heterogeneous networks. In homogeneous network each base station has similar transmit power level, antenna pattern, receiver noise floor and similar backhaul connectivity. But this type of network has disadvantage of coverage hole. In heterogeneous network the macro BSs is collocated with micro, pico and femto cells. This arrangement increases overall spectral efficiency per unit area (capacity) of the network. Whereas small cell like micro, pico, femto and relays are used to avoid coverage hole and to provide mobility to the users. Not only this relays can be used to provide backhaul connectivity, where wire line link is not possible or are expensive to deploy. As determined by the information theoretic capacity limits, current cellular systems have evolved to a point where a system with one BS achieves near optimal performance. Researchers are now moving towards more advanced heterogeneous network topology which will bring the network more closely to the mobile user leading to further capacity gains [46 49]. HetNets will significantly improve the spectral efficiency per unit area by utilizing a diverse set of BSs. 1.4 Elements of Heterogeneous Network Heterogeneous deployment need to use innovative cell association and inter celling interference coordination techniques in order to realize the promised capacity and coverage gains. A typical heterogeneous wireless technology as shown in figure 1.4 has the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Family Law Research Paper Family law is an area of law that is very interesting to me. Many people are unaware of exactly what family law is and what it deals with. Most believe that family law is marriage, divorce, child custody, and murders between members of a family. Their thoughts are indeed correct, but family law is so much more than that. Below I will discuss my reasons for choosing family law, plaintiff/defendant,and the tasks of the paralegal. Family law is an important body of law that defines relationships, rights, and duties in the formation, ongoing existence, and dissolution of marriage and other family units. JIT Manufacturing and Inventory Control System Essay JIT Manufacturing and Inventory Control System Since the dawn of human existence evolution in all sectors of society has occurred due to Economic factors. This has mainly happened due to the fact that all technological achievements have occurred in favor of money. Specifically we can admit that Economy is the main reason for growth and development. By these means it is in our interest to establish strong economies either as societies (macroeconomics) or as individuals (microeconomics). For these reasons several techniques and methods have been initiated in order help modern individuals to develop. Such techniques are usually Accounting or ... By these means the company is never overstocked and that has as an affect that the company will never have a liquidity problem since assets as stock of goods are smaller and cash is bigger. Another reason for this to happen is the fact that Just in time manufacturing is a philosophy of eliminating non value added activities and increasing product quality throughout the manufacturing process (Meigs, Bettner, p. 804). But how can we control if our Just in time manufacturing system is efficient? The answer to that is given by Meigs and Bettner : A widely used measure of efficiency in a Just in time system is the Manufacturing Efficiency ratio (p. 805). This ratio is given by the Value Added Activities time over the Cycle time. The cycle time is the time of processing, storing, moving and inspecting that is spent on the material before their usage. If the ratio is equal to one then we have the perfect Manufacturing efficiency ratio. This means that the smaller the number the less efficient is our Just in Time manufacturing method and the larger are the Value added activities. Finally we can conclude that if we perform the Just in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Are The Challenges Of The Khmer Empire It s interesting to learn and to understand that many of the challenges society confronts today such as urban planning, religion, agriculture and trading and the impacts of climate change were challenges also experienced during the Khmer Empire between C.802 C.1431. A lot of these challenges were key features of everyday life in the Angkor/Khmer Empire. Some of the key features included trade and agriculture, religion, water management, and the social structure. Agriculture and trade played an important role in the Khmer Empire due to the Mekong River, rice paddies, the Funan and the Zhenla. In this empire there was two types of religion and these were Buddhism and Hinduism, however before the religions grew the people believed in spirits. There were two different types of spirits and these were ancestor spirits and nature spirits. Pro Choice And Pro Life Arguments Abortion is defined by Merriam Webster as the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus (Merriam Webster, n.d.). Abortion is always a passionate topic of debate for anybody. Whether it s a debate for an elected government position or friends just sitting around drinking coffee, abortion is a topic that has the potential to get emotionally out of hand. For example, should a person injure or kill a mother and her unborn child, intentionally or unintentionally, during the event of a crime the person will be charged with the appropriate crime of two people instead of one. The law also defines what is considered to be a human. It states that any unborn child in the mother s womb at any point in time of the pregnancy is considered to be human (Hart, 2004). As of 2015, 38 states have laws similar to the Federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act also known as fetal homicide laws. 23 of those state laws go as far as applying the law to the initial phases of pregnancy instead of after a certain period of time (Frantz, 2016). For example, someone in the state of Arkansas cannot be charged with the homicide of an unborn child until after 12 weeks gestation whereas someone in the state of Arizona can be charged with the homicide of an unborn child at any point in time while the child is in the mother ( Key Facts, 2004). Another argument is abortions are painful for an unborn child to go through. While most abortions are usually done prior to the end of the first trimester there are abortions that are done in the second or third trimester. The medical community has different views on whether or not an unborn child can feel pain before 20 weeks. Some doctors will say a child can feel pain at as soon as eight weeks while others will say they won t be able to feel pain until after the 20 weeks mark. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Germany s nationalism began during the Napoleonic Wars of 1799 to 1815. France s leader at the time, Napoleon, lead in the invasion of German territory. This destruction prompted Germany s bourgeoisie to want a modern German nation state with its own cultural identity. The state would ideally be built on liberal democracy, constitutionalism, representation, and popular sovereignty. The Treaty of Vienna was created after the Napoleonic Wars in attempt to establish a German nation state. In 1848, an all German parliament in Frankfurt was created. The goal of this parliament was to make a constitution for all German states. The series of liberal revolutions that had occurred over time reached a climax when people rebelled against the parliament, mainly because of Prussia and Austria s rivalry. This caused supporters of the parliament to advocate a small German nation state with Austria excluded (Gale). As this revolution took place, Bismarck was persuaded to reenter the government in order to protect the monarchy. Bismarck attended the Frankfurt Parliament and made his traditionalist opinions known through speeches. Bismarck was then appointed envoy to the Bundestag in 1851, which is when he began to gain power (Otto Gale). As can be seen, a parliament was created as an attempt to unify all German states, but tensions between Prussia and Austria caused a rebellion against the constitution. The researcher began with defining communicative competence and briefly talked about four theories and five theoretical frameworks. Later on, the researcher talked about elements of communicative competence as well as its sub elements and how to teach them with relations to the four language skills. Finally, the researcher discussed communicative language teaching (CLT) as it depends on communicative competence in its basis. So far, in this chapter, the researcher will talk about the research design as well as the methodological tools that will be used in collecting data. 3.1 Research design and methods 3.1.1 Research design Research design provides the procedures by which the researcher can collect the required data for answering the research questions. According to Griffee, a research design is an operating model or blueprint for a research project, which accounts for internal reasoning (causality) and external reasoning (generalizability) (41). Interestingly, the researcher thoroughly consulted the existing knowledge in the field of communicative competence so that he could get a clear and precise design to investigate the present research problem. Even though the story was written eight decades ago, the message Camus was trying to convey is still pliable to current day. The novel starts off with the narrator, Guy Meursault, just receiving news of his mother s passing and her funeral that takes place the following day. Meursault shows no signs of remorse over losing his own mother and even refuses to look at his own mother s body. Once the funeral was over the narrator meets up with his former employee, who he takes to see a comedy movie and starts a relationship with her. The story s protagonist is Guy Meursault, a Frenchman in his late thirties. While the protagonist is a man, the antagonist is society itself. Society is the one who finds Meursault guilty, just because he cannot grasp its composition. He finds it difficult to comprehend his own actions as wrong due to his own logic of society. While the story takes place in Algeria, which is a country in North Africa, it feels as if it could have taken place anywhere. In spite of the topic of the story, which is concerning death, the tone of Camus writing makes it seem as if the narrator is uncaring and indifferent to the topic. Throughout his mother s death and his neighbor s cruel acts Meursault doesn t feel anything about these things; the author makes it appear that the protagonist is heartless and cold. The narrator seems to have no reason not to believe Sintès story about his girlfriend and even helps him emotionally and physically hurt her. The point of view in the book is first person, which allows the audience to understand Meursault s thoughts and opinions. We are able to hear that he feels no remorse for any of this actions and even thinks of death as something trivial for it is part of everyday life. I feel that if the story wasn t in first person the story would not be renown as a classic. For without the narrator s perspective Camus book would not be known for describing the human condition. In the press conference following his appearance at the Cole Inquiry a few hours earlier, the prime minister countered arguments that his government should have acted on the dozens of warnings by citing others who had been duped by AWB. However, there had been numerous earlier warnings of AWB s unethical practices.42 For example, just a month after AWB made its first payment of US$500 000 into the Jordanian account of transport company Alia (half owned by the Iraqi government), the Canadian Wheat Board was told by the Iraqis that to have its wheat contract processed it would have to pay US$700 000 into the same Jordanian account. Women take care of the house and bear a child. Men have power and are in charge of the relationships. In The Canterbury Tales the Wife of Bath sets as a counter of women in the middle ages. The Wife of Bath is liked by Chaucer because she is distinctive. Her distinctive traits make her appealing and memorable. The Wife of Bath got married 5 times. During the middle age, women commonly get married once. Unlike the women of the middle age the Wife of Bath acquired power. In the summer of 2007, the markets began to collapse, bringing Paulson early profits. By the year s end, John Paulson had pulled off the greatest financial trade in history, earning more than $15 billion for his firm. He subsequently invested funds in gold share classes in 2010, but they did not perform as well as the firm planned, causing his net worth to drop $700 million (Zuckerman). Both hedge funds and index funds stem from the idea of an independent mutual fund, but their potential to succeed is dependent upon the economy performing well. The success of all investments, whether a bull or bear market, are significantly driven by the performance of the overall economy. Economics explains how people interact within markets to gain what they want or to accomplish their goals. The market usually either has falling prices, which means a bear market and when flourishing this is referred to as the bull market. The United States is a market economy, which means the financial decisions and the pricing of goods and services are guided primarily by the aggregate interactions of a country s citizens and businesses. In other words, market economies have little government intervention or central planning (Investopedia). In addition to the performance of the overall market, the returns for individuals are impacted by a company s management team. The managers of investment funds either invest or trade investment instruments for the fund. Investing and trading are two different strategies to achieve investment returns. • 23. Evolution Of Justice How has justice evolved throughout world history? When children are young they are expected to follow rules precisely and if they break a rule, then they are typically forced to take a timeout. In a child s eyes, a time out is a horrible and miserable time when they are compelled to think about what they did wrong. But even though a timeout is considered harsh in the child s eyes it still establishes justice between the child who broke the rule and who was affected by that child s choice. As the child grows older, it realizes that justice doesn t have to established through a set of rules, but that justice can be achieved through kindness. In this example, Jesus is giving a sermon to people from various areas of Africa. Therefore, whoever breaks even the smallest of the commandments and teaches others to do the same will be least in the kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys the Law, and teaches others to do the same will be great in the kingdom of heaven (The Sermon on the Mount 30 C.E.). This exemplifies that if one was to break a commandment, he would face little to no severe punishment. Although the individual would face little punishment, if they did nothing to make the situation right they would face punishment spiritually or after death. However, Jesus did not only ensure punishment but also made good promises for those who were obedient. (God speaking to Moses) From this you know that now, if you obey my voice and hold fast to my covenant, you of all the nations shall be my very own for all the earth is mine. I will count you a kingdom of priests, a consecrated nation (The Covenant Code, Exodus 20:19 23:33). This portrays that those who did not obey God s covenant would not receive the good things that he promised but they would, however, get away with facing little punishment physically. Researchers who hold different philosophical positions may find mixed methods research to be difficult because of their different beliefs (Greene, 2007). The central issues in this paper will focus on social and political historical oppressions such as the Sixties Scoop, The Indian Act, and Residential Schooling, to examine how colonialism has, and still negatively affects intimate relations within aboriginal families and communities, and their ways of doing family . The Indian Act illustrates how government policy on the macro level, shapes micro level privileges and exclusions for aboriginals based on citizenship. Mandatory residential schooling stripped children of their culture, and predisposed survivors to mental health issues and strained parent child relationships for future generations. The Sixties Scoop ripped families apart by disrupting intimate relations within the family. Aboriginal people s culture and traditions have been under attack through colonial and prejudicial attitudes, having negative consequences for Aboriginal families as a whole. Residential Schools, The Indian Act, and The sixties scoop, inspired by the Canadian governments political strive for nation building, has had severe repercussions on Aboriginal family life, exposing how interlocking dimensions of race, class, gender, and citizenship impact the Aboriginal family. The Impact Of Gender On Organizational Work Unit Teams The Impacts of Gender on Organizational Work Unit Teams Nada Nafissa Morgan State University The influence of women in society has undergone a paradigm shift in America over the last century. Indeed, women have gone from being solely relegated to the roles of mother and housewife to legislators and CEOs, from not having the basic right to vote to being elected officials, Supreme Court Justices and frontrunners for the office of President of the United States. But while the power of women in society has grown exponentially during this time, American society remains largely bureaucratic and male dominated in many ways. Gender differences remain part of the American landscape, and throughout the world. While America can be viewed as setting the bar for women s rights on a global scale, gender inequity remains part of the fabric of our society. In 2005, Alaska pilots had pay cuts of 26% when the airline industry lost an estimated $7.4B (IATA, 2005) due to fuel price surges (James, Andrea, 2007). Since then, fuel prices have fallen significantly; pilots at Alaska have been paid less than those at other legacy airlines, such as Delta or United (Glassdoor, 2017). According to self reporting surveys, Alaska Airline pilots earn on average $107,860 a year while Virgin pilots earn around $100,00 a year (Glassdoor, 2017). Compared to a legacy airline like Delta, with an average pilot salary of $137,587 per year (Glassdoor, 2017), Alaska and Virgin do not pay their pilots competitively. The movement grew out of the earlier Temperance Movement, which steadily grew in popularity during the mind 19th century. There are four reasons why prohibition ultimately failed in Canada: (1) it was not really enforced; (2) it was not truly effective; (3) a shift in popular thought; (4) and loss of public support. (Idea of Provinces + order) In the end, the government would change its stance from one of illegality to control and regulation. Well, in the city of Moncton, New Brunswick there is a good example of the problem like minded law enforcement and crooked bureaucrats. The city of Moncton used the CTA to issue prohibitory law concerning alcohol in 1879. At this time, like elsewhere in New Brunswick, liquor trade was still inexistence. In Moncton s case, though the bureaucrats were accused of allowing the trade to occur so that they could make money, for the city and maybe for themselves, off the fines for liquor violations. This came to a head in 1881 when a bootlegger was fined based off the cities prohibition law. The bootlegger, eventually, petitioned New Brunswick s Supreme Court. • 47. The Power Of Knowledge In Berenbury, By Ray Bradbury The choice of what is done with the power of knowledge lies in the hands of the beholder. In an advanced society live firemen who have the job of burning houses of those who own books. The protagonist, a fireman named Guy Montag, begins the story off saying, It was a pleasure to burn (Bradbury 1). He lives this destructive lifestyle until one day on his way home he encounters Clarisse, a analytic girl who questions him if he is happy. Her intriguing manner pushes him into not only stealing books from houses in the process of burning them, but also reading them. Once Montag realizes why knowledge is considered a burden, he conspires to frame the firemen. During this process the fire chief, Beatty, discovers what he is doing, and tries to stop him. This results in him killing his chief and a few of his fellow firemen after he is forced to burn down his own home, only to barely escape to a camp full of fellow people who share the knowledge of books. The camp watches the city be bombed, and soon heads to the city to rebuild it from the very beginning, starting with books. Throughout the roughly 150 pages of this novel Ray Bradbury shows the importance on it how you use your choices and how they will affect the conclusion. From only the very beginning, our protagonist and antagonist share the same views on books as each other. Beatty, being a far more intelligent person than Montag, uses his intellect to harshly mock a woman whilst burning her house. Beatty ironically quotes a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. The Typographic Mind By Neil Postman In the beginning of chapter four, The Typographic Mind, Neil Postman delivers an impressive narrative argument about the impact of print information culture on 17th and 19th century minds. Postman makes a few claims with respect to the contrasts between the written and spoken word. In this essay, there are four qualities of the typographic mind: attention span, listening ability, knowledge of issues, and literary language. First, Postman discusses attention span in reference to America s first debate between Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln on August 21 1858. Attention span means the length of time during which a person can concentrate on a subject or idea. Postman first illustrates about people with disciplined minds who are able to attend and listen to a 4 5 hour lecture. People at that time can listen and gather information, so they are able to comprehend and structure sentences. One debate lasted three hours while another in 1858 went seven. Postman guarrateeds that Douglas and Lincoln who wrote speeches in advance are pure print and they have the power of typography to get the audience attention because their language was clear. The audiences who attended the debate must have had an equally extraordinary capacity to comprehend lengthy and complex sentences aurally (45). Much of it seemed either blindingly obvious, or like the moanings of a killjoy who can t bear that television is entertaining and that people are unable to process it through the ear , therefore ...
