The Accidental Billionaire Movie Analysis
The Controversial Creation of Facebook Based on the novel known as The Accidental
Billionaire, The Social Network is a film that explains about the creation and the evolution of
Facebook, which is one of the most popular social media in the 21st century. In 2003, Mark
Zuckerberg, a young student of Harvard University, encountered a sudden heartbreak from his
girlfriend during the dinner. Instead of feeling flat, Mark felt angry and confused; therefore, he
decided to fight back. On that night, a crazy idea came up to his mind, where he hacked the
Harvard University system and stole all the girls, information including their photos. A few hours
later after taking the ladies information with his friend Eduardo Saverin, the two established a
social site known as FaceMash. They encouraged the other students to compare the girls faces on
this new site. Eventually, the platform paralyzed the school s system and made Mark famous
overnight. However, Mark received his first time punishment from the university for his action.
Consequently, Mark and Eduardo s site drew more attention from Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler
Winklevoss where they invited them to create a Harvard Connection site. Mark and Eduardo
accepted the invitation, but at the same time, they continued writing their social platform which
they changed to Facebook, taking a reference to Cameron and Tyler s idea. The social site;
Facebook, regain high popularity, where more and more users joined. However, Cameron and

Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond
This book review is on Guns, Germs and Steel, by Jared Diamond. The book was very interesting
but a lot of the information could have been cut because it s a bit too long. Jared Diamond is a
scientist, not a historian and he s American. He upset many historians around the world by the
way he bashes Europeans. However, he did win a Pulitzer Prize for the book so that says
something. Jared Diamond is a professor of Geography at UCLA and a worldtraveler. He believes
that in the past 13,000 years of human history, agriculture has lead humans to conquer, develop
and prosper and therefore cause the rise of civilizations. In 1972 he was in New Guinea when he
met a local named Yali who asked him a simple question that took years for Diamond to answer.
Yali said Why is it that you white peopledeveloped so much cargo [goods] and brought it to New
Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own . [Work cited 7] Diamond was
profoundly puzzled and couldn t answer right away. In fact it took him many years to come up
with what he thinks is the right answer. Yali s question plays a central role in Professor Diamond
s enquiry into a short history of everybody for the last 13,000 years , leading him into a wide
ranging discussion of the history of human evolutionand diversity through a study of migration,
socio economic and cultural adaptation to environmental conditions, and technological diffusion.

Domestic Violence Against Women in Canada Essay
Introduction Intimate partner violence has been a significant issue for centuries in all countries.
Since 1974, nearly 2,600 spousal homicides have been recorded in Canada (Bunge, 2002). Of these
homicides, more than three quarters have been against women. Although through feminism and the
women s liberation movement, there has been a slight improvement in the incidences of violence
against women, there has also been a drastic change in the perception of the issue by society. After
reviewing the most recent literature on violence against womenand victimization through intimate
partners, it has become prevalent that there are now two crucial stances that are taken. The first
position is that of the women being victimized as the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, changing nature of intimate relationships, increasing gender equality, legislative
changes, policy and procedural changes, etc. (Bunge, 2002). Between 1974 and 2000, the homicide
rate for women decreased by 62% and the homicide rate for men dropped by more than half 55%
(Bunge, 2002) which demonstrates the drastic decline in intimate partner violence including
homicides. Secondly, one of the general concepts behind the literature examined would be the idea
that intimate partner violence is now going through a process of normalization. For instance,
popular women s magazines frame domestic violence in a way that normalizes the victims s
responsibility while ignoring the role of the abuser and society (Berns, 2001). Individuals construct
their own conceptions of what is normal and acceptable. These conceptions, what Cicourel (1968)
calls background expectancies govern all social interaction (Berns, 2001). With the norms that
society creates being the main control of interaction amongst society, it is clear that by allowing the
perspective of intimate partner violence as normal will create unawareness about the issue and may
perpetuate further issues. Women who have respect and power outside the home through
community activities, including participation in microcredit schemes, are less likely to be abused
than those who do not (Jewkes, 2002).

The Effects Of Television Violence On Our Society
Our world has a variety of problems today, with violence being at the top of the list, you go
anywhere and that is all you here about. Unfortunately it s in front page headlines of the
newspaper and broadcasted on the news as top stories. Violence is a very big topic, although it is
categorized into many small groups. There is juvenile violence, domestic violence, hate violence,
terrorist violence, and violence displaced through various forms of the media. This research will
be on violence in the media and does it affect our society. How we view television, has changed
the world, no doubt in that. Turn your television set on and pick a channel at random; the odds
are that half of the programs you come across will contain violent material. The statistics are
overwhelming as I look on the internet, read articles, and look at the research. One of the things
that most interests me in the violence on television, is the effects it has on children. Children
learn by repetition while watching educational shows, so is learning violence on television an
exception? This research paper is directed to parents, educational providers, psychologists in
research, clinical practice, and individuals with public advocacy roles and defined by education,
age and gender. Both women and men will be a core audience for this paper, as I have come
across the fact that adolescent boys and adult men are more drawn to violent television then
women. It will draw both genders for different

A Lady of Letters and Cream Cracker under the Settee by...
A Lady of Letters and Cream Cracker under the Settee by Alan Bennett The two monologues I
am going to be writing about are two elderly women who are lonely and trapped in their own
homes. I will be talking about how Doris, one lady from Cream cracker under the settee and
Irene, the other lady in Lady of letters are suffering from loneliness. Doris and Irene both live
alone. They don t seem to have any special friends. For example, Irene doesn t like being people
calling her Irene. People who come across Irene must call her Miss.Ruddock; nobody has called her
Irene since her mother died. Only real friends may call Miss Ruddock Irene. But both Doris and
Irene have people who do you look out for them like the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like when she complained to the council about a curb being cracked, little things like this are
quite amusing to see such an intelligent women making a fuss. Irene and Doris also have some
things in common. They both have lost loved ones in their lives. This is an important story line
in both monologues, as I will explain later on. The music in these monologues feels the emotions
of what the characters are feeling. When there is a scene where Doris or Irene is happy, the
music will go along with the expressions. I could tell when the topic came up on the loved lost
ones it was a very dramatic time for Irene and Doris. The music drained out the room with a slow
deep beat of a bellow. This makes the monologues more realistic with the different types and
style of music, and with the pauses where no music is played at all. Cream cracker under the
settee and lady of letters are both set in houses. Which are very stereotypical houses for the
elderly, with the dull colours, except in these houses they have horrible bars on their windows that
couldn t make Doris and Irene feel very comfortable. There are a number of things I could write
for Doris and Irene, imprisonment, lack and loss and the endings of the monologues. But I have
chosen to go in deeply about the loneliness and how it has affected them. I feel that this topic is one
of the main structures of the monologues. IRENE Starting with

Wolsey s Responsibility For His Own Downfall Essay
Wolsey s Responsibility For His Own Downfall Thomas Wolsey can be easily viewed as being
responsible for his own downfall. John Guy believes that Wolsey was brilliant but flawed. His
rise was based on luck, charm, intelligence and opportunism. Wolsey had such high ambitions
and gave Henry the idea he was capable of getting him anything, so when Wolsey failed to get
Henry a divorce, it was seen as the final nail on the coffin to his downfall. His policies are also a
cause to his downfall; Wolsey s foreign policy was a success but also caused problems. On Wolsey
s rise he created enemies, which lead to the lack of support and opposition in his years as
Chancellor. But it can also be viewed, on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

particularly aristocrats who resented his usurpation of their traditional influence. They also
resented his great wealth. Over the years, Wolsey amassed a vast fortune, though he spent
lavishly, but he was also charitable and personally financed many diplomatic missionaries. Most
of the gentlemen who entered the government service was for financial reward; Wolsey was not
different. As the Kings chief minister, he was expected to entertain foreign dignitaries and

however, damage both his personal reputation and the church. Wolsey s rise was a cause was a

Archetypes In Life Of Pi
Introduction
Lead
To travel is to take a journey into yourself (Logothethis 1). We are the heroes of our own lives
and are given the opportunities to make decisions that will shape our own personal stories. Life of
Pi is a beautiful novel which fits Joseph Campbell s Monomyth (Hero s Journey) archetype, a
pattern which has been used to structure stories for generations from all around the world. Piscine
Molitor Patel (Pi), the protagonist of the novel, finds himself shaping his life, knowing that each
mistake puts his survival at stake. Yann Martelhas written a breathtaking story about the voyage
and erudition of Pi. He uses the Monomyth archetype to show the measures one would take to

Analysis Of Matthew Johnson s The Strengths And Weaknesses
Moreover, Matthew Johnson effectively challenges conventional views of castles and
underscores the complexity of such structures by using a variety of credible sources and
evidence. He successfully supports his thesis by covering all his bases and acknowledging
different viewpoints. Johnson s analytical methodology helps defend his notion as by examining
other academics works he is able to offer greater insight and provide new conclusions; I have
discussed what I view as a series of ruptures in other books [...]. Johnson principally presents the
strengths and weaknesses of other academics to make up the bulk of the book. He criticizes those
with distinctive and limited views and by presenting their weaknesses he is able to further support
his thesis. For example, by highlighting the problems associated with the constricted militaryview
such as using our modern preconceptions to defend what the intent of the builder at the time was,
only aids Johnson s notion that castles cannot be one thing or another but rather more complex. One
cannot use their own bias of what was intended or the thought process in order to defend their
statement. Another instance where Johnson offers his own inquiry to add dimension and illustrate
the intricate nature of castles is in the subheading Ripples from Italy. The author touches on the
point that France is often the contender for parallels in late medieval Europe however, that this on
its own cannot produce a critical examination of past

The Satirical Theme of The Princess Bride, by William Goldman
Satire with a funny twist. In the novel The Princess Bride, William Goldman satirizes both fairy
tales and the standard literary process through his characters and their actions. Westley, a poor
farmer, falls in love with the far from perfect maiden, Buttercup, but has to sail away in order to
find his fortunes. Years later, Buttercup, thinking that Westley abandoned her, is forcibly engaged to
Prince Humperdinck, a cruel and calculating man. Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo, three mysterious
kidnappers, abduct the princess in hopes of causing war between the great nations of Guilder and
Florin. These events and characters mirror those in a common fairy tale, but with many twists to
them. The author, William Goldman, uses both his role as the... Show more content on

By portraying himself as an editor for the novel, Goldman interjects his personal thoughts into the
novel. In the very beginning of the novel he adds parentheses and tells the reader that he will
continue to include parenthetical references throughout the novel (46). Even though this is taboo,
Goldman gives little regard to the literary industry s rigid limitations, implying the belief that the
writing process should not be serious and structured; it should in fact be free flowing and
enjoyable. Lastly, Goldman goes on to criticize the literary process by having the ability to step
outside of the fairy tale as the editor and comment in a critical perspective. When Goldman
removes a soliloquy that S. Morgenstern had to put in this fairy tale he explains that the previous
book was bombed by the critics [because it did not include this soliloquy] and didn t [sell] beans
(223). Goldman, through his writing, implies that the literary industry is so narrow minded that
they constantly attack those who disagree with the accepted writing style. This mockery implies
that the literary industry rules reflect its inability to adjust to a changing society. By acting as both
the writer and the editor, William Goldman creates a satirical work that implicitly critiques the
literary industry.
Likewise, Goldman s portrayal of his characters mocks the tropes

Siddhartha Comparison
In the novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, the main character, Siddhartha, lives his life as a
Brahmin s son. Although everyone may have thought he was happy with his life, he was in fact
not. He left his home and family as a young man and went on a journey to find enlightenment. In his
attempts, Siddhartha follows the eightfold path, a guide to end all suffering and help reach
enlightenment. Similar Siddhartha, my journey made me strive to become a better person overall.
Utilising right action, I have made myself a better person by donating to charity, volunteering for
those in need, and respecting people s wishes. At the beginning of the novel, Siddhartha lives his
life as a brahmin s son. Despite all the wealth and riches that come with being in the family of a
Brahmin, Siddhartha leaves his home to become a Samana, which live a life full of deprivation.
Siddhartha politely asks his father to leave the family and join the Samanas. With your permission,
Father, I have come to tell you that I wish to leave your house tomorrow and join the ascetics. (10)

Gender, Race, And Class
In the All New Volvo XC90 commercial the first words to appear on the screen is What is
Luxury? In this commercial it appears that luxury can only be afforded by primarily white, rich
males. The media in the United States has made a lot of progress towards showing gender and
racial equality on TV but America still has a long way to go. As of 2015 white men still have a
patriarchal ranking in media compared to women and minorities. This essay will be discussing how
intersectionality, such as gender, race, and class, play a key part in gender roles in TV media today.
Luxury is the main focus in Volvo CarsUS commercial for their new Volvo XC90; but what does
luxury mean? According to Merriam Webster Online, the definition of luxury is something that
is expensive and not necessary ( Luxury ). But according to the All New Volvo XC90
commercial, luxury signifies simplicity, a sanctuary, confidence, and safety. First of all this
commercial is showing that all of those things are expensive and they are not a necessity to live.
Anyone can gain a sanctuary and confidence for free. Those things do not come from buying
something expensive, they come from how an individual feels about oneself. In the commercial it
shows a white man driving and navigating the touch screen GPS system while a white woman sits

Hobbes And Rousseau On The Social Contract Theory
Hobbes and Rousseau on the Social Contract Theory
The social contract theory focuses on the origin of states and laws, and the impact of regulated
communities or states on individuals. All conceptions of the social contract theory can be
harmonized to the individual desire for safety or security and the demand for fulfillment through a
collective agreement which transforms the human dimension into an organized society from the
primordial state. Rousseau was the first philosopher to coin the social contract terminology despite
it being recognized in some Greek philosophers works. Thomas Hobbes, however, is widely
acknowledged as the founder of the social contract theory within western philosophy (Baird, 2011).
As a result, the theories of Rousseau and Locke can be regarded, to some extent, to be based on the
disquisitions of Hobbes. Conversely, Locke and Rousseau have transformed the concept of Hobbes
to align with their perspectives on society and human nature. Hobbes and Rousseau have significant
similarities and differences in their similarities conceptions regarding the social contract theory.
Hobbes argues that man naturally desires security and order. It is the quest for security and
preservation, as well as the need to avoid pain and misery that made man to get into a contract. Self
preservation and protection are widespread in the nature of man and in an attempt to achieve it,
man voluntarily surrendered all his rights and freedoms to the authority through the

President Nixons International and Domestic Challenges Essay
Name Teacher AP US History September 20, 2012 President Richard M. Nixon s administration
had to face many international and domestic challenges in the United States between 1968 and
1974, some positive and some negative. His achievements in expanding peaceful relationships with
both China and the Soviet Union are contrastingly different with his continuation of the Vietnam
War. In the end, Nixon s scandals and abuse of presidential power caught up to him, and his
administration did much to corrode America s faith in the government. In 1968, Richard Nixon
gave his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention(Doc A). He said that it was

He announced it was the first symbolic act of the environmental decade. Between the years of
1970 and 1972, Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency and signed laws including
the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Another thing he
did was sign executive orders and international agreements on environmental issues. In early
1973, an international conference was held to discuss endangered species. The product of the
conference was the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna
and Flora. The U.S. needed a new legislation to meet some of the agreement s provisions and it
led to the Endangered Species Act. In Nixon s State of the Union speech in 1973, he called for
stronger wildlife protection. The results of these environmental laws and international agreements
made the public extremely happy. Even though Nixon s intentions were selfish when he got
involved in environmental concerns, he responded unquestionably positive. All his hard work
helped pave the way for a cleaner society. In 1973, an oil crisis began when the members of the
OAPEC (consisting of the Arab members of OPEC, plus Egypt, Syria and Tunisia) proclaimed an
oil embargo in response to the United States decision to resupply the Israeli military during the
Yom Kippur War. The embargo happened when 85% of American workers had to drive to work

Does the End Justify the Means
Lesley Rawlins The end justifies the means The end justifies the means is an expression that is
often used in society to validate or excuse distasteful and objectionable actions undertaken by its
people. In effect, the phrase is a justification for dispensing with all morality and principle in the

Zimbardo s prison experiment at Stanford University was a study on what the psychological
effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard was on the individual. Zimbardo wanted to
investigate whether the cruelty reported among guards in American prisons was due to the
aggressive personalities of the guards or the prison environment itself. Twenty four well adjusted
undergraduates were selected out of over 75 to play the roles of both guards and prisoners. The
guards were permitted to devise most of the rules. A third of the guards exhibited genuine sadistic
tendencies, and subjected the prisoners to torture. After the initial rebellion most of the prisoners
stopped opposing the guards losing their personal identity and self belief. Zimbardo s research
demonstrated that people can behave uncharacteristically when placed, in new social or physical

zealously. The argument that anything is reasonable if it leads to a significant and meaningful
outcome ignores the moral and ethical questioning of the method and the use of this principle to

Flavian Amphitheatre Essay
In this paper, I will argue that the Flavian Amphitheatre is the most aesthetically pleasing Roman
Monument created during the period of 80 96 CE. To Prove this claim, I will use research founded
by various sources to illustrate just how beautiful the colosseum was.
The Colosseum also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre is one of the biggest achievements of the
Roman age. The construction of this huge Amphitheatre was started by Vespasianin 72 AD. It was
finished by his son, Titus, in 80 AD. The Colosseumwas built in the Centre of the city of Rome,
Italy. Measuring in at 190 by 155 meters, the Colosseum was the largest amphitheater in the Roman
world. Unlike many earlier amphitheaters, which were dug into hillsides to provide support. The
Colosseum was an independent structure made of three great inventions concrete and the vaulted

a. Calling a cellular company s customer service number and lodging a complaint.
b. The flow chart above elaborates the process of expressing one s grievance and lodging a
complaint to the cellular company from start to end. The steps involved will be classified into two
categories, value added services and non value added services. A justification will be provided for
the classification.
Value added steps
. Find customer care number online
A consumer is required to go online and find the respective numbers for the cellular company he
/she wants to reach. Usually, the company has a standard IVR(interactive voice response) in place
and the consumers are provided with a toll free number on the website. This is step is inevitable as
one needs to reach the company s customer service line in order to lodge his/her complaint.
. Call the customer service number
A toll free number can be obtained by the consumer via the company s website. The toll free
number would be represented as 1 888 XXX XXXX. The customer makes a call to the number in
order to find a solution to the problem.
. Follow instructions on IVR
In this step is where the problem begins, the IVR s are usually not customer friendly and the menu
list are very vast and it requires a great deal of patience from the customers side but, you need to
go through multiple lists and find a desired option and click the respective extension.

In the 19th century, America was experiencing a religious diversity expansion. Religion was an
essential part of the established American culture, gaining great influence on the spiritual lives of
many. For some, religion meant a special interest, as many saw in religion the power to dominate
while others selflessly embraced it as a form to live a harmonious life. Nonetheless, the superiority
of some established religions from the times of the colonies dominated over those seeking to fit in a
Protestant religious culture. Alexis de Tocqueville, was a French statesman, that while visiting
America made a strong observation about the power of religion, he concluded that, One cannot
therefore say that in the United States religion influences the laws or political opinions in detail,
but it does direct mores, and by regulating domestic life it helps to regulate the state. If religion
helped regulate the state, it can be said it contributed a strong element to the seeking of dominance
of moral matters according to the visions of some and exclusion of others. The desire for
dominance over cultural and religious principles, led the Puritan evangelical insiders and non
Protestant outsiders into a religious struggle for spiritual authority in 19th century America.
Separation of church and state guaranteed the right and freedom to practice the desire religion in
America. Religions came to light since colonial

Benjamin Franklin s Autobiography
Benjamin Franklin is an iconic figure in history, primarily for his many inventions. Franklin also
wrote an autobiography about his life, there is a difference between a biography and an
autobiography. Biographies are written by someone who is writing about another person s life. An
autobiography, on the other hand, is a person writingabout their own life. Usually in an
autobiography, the writer will talk about his or her life, including their childhood, family, and
schooling. The writer will also usually talk about their parents, and their marriage. Benjamin
Franklin s autobiography is very different, he starts off by saying dear son , which leads the
reader to believe that it is a normal autobiography. Once you read about two more paragraphs in

He also briefly talks about his childhood life, but even then he still talks about how good he was
and how his friends respected him so much. Franklin also very briefly writes how he met the
love of his life in Philadelphia, then he doesn t really write much about dating the love of his
life, which you would think being an autobiography he would talk more about her. When the
Governor of Philadelphia wanted Franklin to go to London for starting a printing business he
basically told his love to marry another (Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin). Franklin s
autobiography tells about his many great accomplishments but very little about his personal life.
When he does talk about his personal life though, he always makes sure that even when he
describes one of his family members or a childhood memory Franklin writes about how good he
was. Franklin also likes to portray himself as the icon of the American dream, for example,
Franklin emphasizes how vital it is for creditors to support fledgling entrepreneurs; and so these
stories illustrate, by implication, the importance of the reader s willingness to credit Franklin s
representations of the American experience ( Vassar

Healthier Dieting on ASU S campus There is a large problem with nutritious diets for college

The Songs I Ever Heard At A Young Age Of 11
This song is listed number one because it was one of the first Beatles songs I ever heard at a
young age of 11. The Beatles were a very spiritual group and it shows in their work. Many of
their songs were based around love and positive energy. The song was originally written by Paul
McCartney in order to guide Julian Lennon, John s son, who was neglected by his father after he
began dating Yoko Ono. My father started dating my step mother around the same age I heard the
song. Certain lyrics presented seem like they speak to me personally, Remember to let her into
your heart. Then you can start to make it better. During the time, I was so young and did not
really understand why my father decided to start dating again shortly after my parents divorce.
It was a very hard time for to choose whether to accept and support my dad s new girlfriend and
life. Hey Jude would relate to the topic of choices and decisions, because change is a very hard
thing to accept and when and how you accept it can vary based upon the person.

Analysis Of The Grizzly Man By Werner Herzog
Grizzly Man
Werner Herzog directed a documentary film called Grizzly Man to show viewers how much interest
Timothy Treadwell demonstrated towards human nature and how he demonstrates human nature
through himself. Timothy Treadwell spent thirteen long summers in Alaskan Peninsula. He went to
go portray his love and protection to the wild life and grizzly bears, which lead him to his
miserable death. Herzog creates a sequence of scenes, comments, and interviews from people who
is well connected directly or indirectly with Treadwell. His purpose of directing the Grizzly Man
documentary through Treadwell s own film was to convey the viewers the difference of human
beings and the wild life animals. Herzog s main effective argument was to convey how courageous
and how insane Treadwell was to spend thirteen summers in the wild life of grizzly bears. Werner
Herzog created this documentary of Treadwell s films because he was not your ordinary type of
guy. He was very bold, brave, adventurous. Herzog introduces Treadwell with one of Treadwell s
shots that he films during his grizzly bear journey. Treadwell states,

Once power is given it cannot be taken away that is the way everyone thinks right that if the
status is higher up it cannot be knocked down. Wrong. Just as quickly power is given it can be
taken away even faster. One narrative I will discuss in this essay is Oroonoko by Aphra Behn. This
narrative could be viewed in many different ways. One way it can be seen is as a biography,
another is a memoir, but it can also be seen as a travel narrative. In this essay I will touch base on
the topics of switching power. By switching power I mean how different individual s power
fluctuates within situations in the novel. Aphra Behnand Oroonokoare able to exceed the way they
are viewed. Behn is both the narrator and the author and Oroonoko is the prince as well as a
slave. Behn is able to be identified as not only powerful, but also as the sideline or less important.
All the while Oronooko is the prince and also a slave. Both an example Behn used to portray an
exchange of power. The slave narrative Oroonoko by Aphra Behn shows how power is switched in
different ways. Behn and Oroonoko s power fluctuates making the narrative interesting and

Case Of Failure Of The Data Nodes
case of failure of the data nodes, the name node knows which data node has failed since that
particular data node will not report back in time to the name node. The name node also knows
where the data that is supplied to the data node has gone redundantly to the other data node.
Therefore the job still goes to completion even though a couple of data nodes fail in the big data
processing. Since the HadoopMapReduce framework is master slave architecture there is a chance
of single point failure. The single point failure occurs when the name node itself fails. In that case
there is also a presence of secondary name node that place in the event of single point failure.

To say that music plays a large role in our society would not do justice to one of the most
important and popular art forms of yesterday and today. We underestimate the effectiveness and
power that music, in any form , can have over even the most insensitive of people. In almost
everything we do and see music is involved in some form or another. Be it a piece played at a
wedding, a song played on the radio or even the music played in the background in a television

A Good Thing Is A Bad Thing By Philip K. Dick
Imagine a world where you can t even walk down a sidewalk without using technology. Author
Philip K. Dick, created a world with fantastic solutions for everyday problems; but too much of a
good thing is a bad thing. In the novel Ubik, author Philip K. Dick suggested that technology is
slowly changing our thoughts and morals to the point that humans can no longer function without it.
What exactly is a moral? According to Google, a moral is a person s standards of behavior or
beliefs concerning what is and what is not acceptable for them to do. In other words it s what a
person believes is the right thing to do; it s what is thought to be what makes you a trustworthy

function better if I can get an ergot based psychedelic drug; it causes me to actually see who I am
up against and I find that it helps. These people purposely did drugs to increase their chances of
being hired.
Another moral based problem in Ubik are moratoriums. Once a person dies they are frozen and
sent to a moratorium; this is how they preserve their deceased loved ones. The man in charge of
the Moratorium Mr. Runciter visited talked about how great it was. His exact words are found
on page 4, Burial is barbaric, Herbert muttered aloud. Remnant of the primitive origins of our

Analysis Of The Genius Of Alexander The Great
Throughout history, leaders have been recognized for how prosperous or unsuccessful they have
been in their efforts. People, particularly, have come to understand that Alexander was none the
less a powerful and diligent man. He follows all aspect of what it means to be strong willed.
Alexander was a man of courage and influence who strived to complete all that he put his mind to.
Ian Worthington writes. In 334 he invaded Persia, and within a decade he had defeated the Persians,
subdued Egypt, and pushed on to Iran, Afghanistan, and even India (64). When one sees a man of
abundant success it is hard to not give that person credit; however, should his steps to success be
looked over, or taken into detailed consideration. Does the end justify the means or vice versa?
The issue with this idea is the fact that Alexander was in fact great. You cannot overlook the
amount of success Alexander had gained over the years. Per contra to the amount of triumph that
radiates from Alexander, one may argue that respectable morals are without a doubt absent during
his lifetime which strips him of this undeserving name. Is it right to get somewhere the easy way
or should a great leader make all decisions in favor of health and well being within himself and his
people? Throughout the articles The Genius of Alexander the Great by N. G. L. Hammond and

Portrayal of Asian Americans
Abstract
My research focused on the coverage of Asian Americans in contemporary mass media. The
following types of media were researched:
В·Music
В·Television
В·Films
В·Magazines
I gave several examples where Asian Americans were used to play very simple characters. These
roles were defined by stereotypes that exist in America. I also researched instances on counter
actions taken by Asian Americans to protest against these negative images. My research also has
examples of Asians that have succeeded in breaking through the racial barriers in the media.

Hollywood typically restricts its portrayals of Asians to a limited range of clichГ©d stock
characters (Restrictive Portrayals [RP], 2004). Examples of the common roles that Asian Americans
play in movies are martial artists, Indian cab drivers, television anchorwomen and prostitutes (RP,
2004). Even if most Americans do not buy into these images because they interact with many Asian
Americans who do not fit the stereotype, the areas of concern are those parts in the United States
where there isn t a sufficient Asian population (Wu, 2002). Since many Asian people do not
surround these Americans on an everyday environment, it is a safe assumption that they will draw
their judgment of Asian Americans from how they are portrayed on film and television.
In many American films, Asian men are portrayed as passive, old, and speak broken English.
The Karate Kid was a popular movie that depicted the Asian actor as such a man. In The Karate

Stanley George Miller Analysis
The visual cues, color, form depth, and movement are all displayed within the graphical painting
by Stanley George Miller. When looking at the painting you see the different color schemes. You
have the black and white with the blues and greys and also the red, yellow content. When
describing the objective colorwithin the painting, these colors can also project a mood on the
observer. The dark colors such as the women in the red dress with a black background portray

including hemorrhaging both internally and externally. Early treatment of the disease was

Bomb Calorimeter Lab Report
In order to determine whether a hydrocarbon produced heat upon altering its chemical state, a
bomb calorimeter was used to find the value of the heat of combustion for sucrose and an altoid
mint. Using benzoic acid to calibrate the bomb calorimeter, the two samples were individually
placed in a combustion cup within a stainless steel cylinder enveloped in water, sealed shut by a
shield containing a thermometer. After igniting the bomb, a change in temperature(В°C) versus time
(s) was recorded. Using the following equation, ∆T=T_c T_A r_1 (b a) r_2 (c b), the ∆T of
benzoic acid was 3.71В°K. Which lead to the determination of the effective heatcapacity, using
C_(v,cal)=((∆cH_b ∆nRT/m_b ) m_b+C_Fe+C_N)/∆T, to be 9,666.27J/g (percent error of

Considering the effective heat capacity is separate from the bomb calorimeters measurements of
standard heat of combustion, the value of the ∆rCv,cal can be identified through calibrating the
instrument with benzoic acid. However, the temperature change of the benzoic acid must be
measured first. In order to measure this temperature change, the following equation can be used.
∆T=T_c T_A r_1 (b a) r_2 (c b) (2)
Where Tc is the final temperature, TA is the initial temperature, r1 is the slope of the pre ignition,
r2 slope of the post rise period, a is the firing time, b is the temperature at 60% of total rise, and c
is the time when rise ends. Once the change in temperature is determined, the Cv equation for
benzoic acid can be utilized.
C_(v,cal)=((∆cH_b ∆nRT/m_b ) m_b+C_Fe+C_N)/∆T (3)
Where ∆cHb is the benzoic acid heat of combustion, CFe is the iron fuse wire correction for
combustion, T is the initial temperature, ∆n is the change in moles of the gas in combustion, and
Cn is the nitric acid formation correction factor. After the calibration of the bomb calorimeter, the
heat of combustion of the sucrose and altoid mint were calculated using the following

Still Life With Tornado Character Analysis
In the novel, Still Life With Tornado, by A.S. King, Sarah, a teenager who strives to be original,
manifests change throughout the story while portraying the theme, originality is inborn. Sarah
is a teenage girl who thinks she is unoriginal. She grows up with parents who hate each other and
only stay together for her and her brother s sake. As their marriage gradually falls apart, Sarah
has to go through the process with them and try to keep herself together. Sarah, the protagonist,
changes throughout the story, as demonstrated by bewilderment, tediousness, and acceptance. In
the beginning of the narrative, Sarah demonstrates characteristics of bewilderment. Sarah, a 16
year old high school dropout, is rethinking her life as she says, Maybe my whole life I ve been
living inside of an imaginary painting (King 54). Sarah is confused and feels that her childhood
was a lie. The readers realize along with her that her parents put on an act to protect her from the
fact that they do not get along. This communicates the sense of feeling trapped within lies
thought to be true and addresses the message to society that the root of the problem is always
bigger than what is expected. Similarly, Sarah asserts her latest assessment regarding herself
and her mental state saying, I am not going crazy. I do not need a psychologist. I decide I am an
artist inside of a tornado that will not let me go (King 128). Sarah decides she is in a mental
state where she cannot portray her feelings. She uses this excuse of being stuck in a tornado to
reject the fact that ultimately she will need to get her life back on track and accept who she is.
This is another one of Sarah s shenanigans to try to be original, and by doing this, she finds a
reason to avert from being a normal person. People today encounter the same situation in
everyday life by using excuses to get around inevitable things. Sarah s manifestation of change
continues in the middle of the story as well. As Sarah progresses, she shows traits of tediousness.
While reflecting on her feelings about herself, she says, I am an umbrella on a day with no rain
(King 9). An umbrella on a day with no rain has no use, therefore the author is trying to show how

Treatment During Childhood Case Study
3.Treatment during childhood
In children, hydrocortisone (8 mg/m2/d) is recommended as starting dose in 3 4 divided doses and
synthetic, long acting glucocorticoids are avoided.
Monitoring by clinical assessment like growth velocity, weight, BP etc.
In PAI with hypoaldosteronism, fludrocortisone should be started with 100mcg/day. In infants and
newborns sodium chloride supplementation is recommended.
C.Treatment of acute adrenal crisis5
Initial resuscitation and fluid correction by normal saline is mandatory. Sodium correction to be
done gradually.

Once Daily Long Acting Hydrocortisone Therapy
Current replacement strategies require modification due to evidence of impaired health and
increased mortality as result of inappropriate glucocorticoid therapy. Mah et al (2004)10 concluded
that a thrice daily regimen is preferable, but immediate release hydrocortisone with short half life

glucocorticoid activity resulting in detrimental effects on insulin sensitivity and bone mineral

Morality Is Not The End All Be All
Morality is not the End All be All Morality is a set of principles that individuals use to distinguish
between right and wrong, good and bad actions. Being the code by which we live our lives,
morality is a concept that leaks into almost every aspect of human life. For example, even a
mundane activity like eating a sandwich for lunch can have moral implications. Consider this
question, was the turkey that ended up on the sandwich raised in horrific factory farm conditions
and subjected to torturous treatment? That is a question with heavy moral implications.
Distinguishing right action from wrong is a crucial skill for humans to have, but is moralitythe only
thing that truly matters about a person. Susan Wolf, an esteemed philosopher, thinks it is not.
Wolf argues that morality is just one of many aspects and values of a person. In other words,
people are more than just moral beings and we should be happy that this is the case. This paper
will provide a brief look at Susan Wolf s argument as well as my argument for why her
contention is the correct one. First a brief summary of one of Wolf s most notable pieces, Moral
Saints . In Moral Saints , Wolf argues from example. She opens her piece by asserting that she
does not know if there are moral saints in the world, but she is happy that she has not encountered
any in her life. Wolf then goes on describing two different kinds of moral saints that she believes
can be conceptualized using common sense, the loving saint and

Bullying Is The Job Of Parents And Schools
Bullying is when you force someone to do something they do not want to, and it can cause stress
or then leads to suicide in some cases. In Schoolyard Bullies by Stephanie Simon, prosecutor
James Backstrom maintains school bullies should go to jail. However, I do not think bullies
should go to jail, because there are different degrees of bullying. Some bullies are victims, and
sending bullies to jail does not cure them. Stopping bullying is the job of parents and schools.
Parents play a key role in preventing and responding to bullying. Parents should recognize the
warning signs that the child is involved in bullying. Children could be being bullied, bullying
others, or witnessing bullying. Although these signs could signal other issues, parents should
talk to their children if they display any sort of behavioral or emotional changes. Many times
children won t ask for help, so it is important to know what to look for. If the child is at
immediate risk of harming himself or others, parents need to get help right away. Just sending
the children who are bullies to go to jail, and doing jail time are not a good way to correct
children s behaviors. I understand the rationale . . . , but incarceration is a fairly big stick, says
Susan Limber, a bullying expert at Clemson University. You can get the same payoff with a lot less
drastic measures (Simon 2). Moreover, if the children go to jail, they might not change their mind,
even though their behavior will be

The Cause And Effects Of The Atrocity Of War
The atrocity of war, in the discussion of both World Wars offers to a particular extent an insight
into the cause and effects, that the world experienced during both periods. The First World War
was fought from 1914 1918 and the second between 1939 to late 1945, staging as the largest
conflicts of human history. World War 1 stimulated into existence with the Assassination of
Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria, in June 1914, the war triggered from these notions of
militarism, imperialism, nationalism and alliance system. World War 2, started as a result of
political and economic instability in Germany, the harsh conditions of the Treaty of Versailles and
Adolf Hitler s rise of power and alliance partnership with Italy and Japan. Both periods signified an

Garner Down Syndrome
Kawanda Garner Down syndrome
Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are
small packages of genes in the body that determine how a baby s body forms during pregnancy
and how the baby s body functions as it grows in the womb and after birth. (CDC, 2014) John
Langon Down first described Down s syndrome or Trisomy 21 in 1866. Trisomy 21 is caused by
a combination of birth defects when there is a nondisjunction or an error in cell division during
meiosis, resulting in a trisomy of chromosome 21. (Porth, 2011, p. 119) While the cause in
unknown, evidence from cytogenetic and epidemiologic studies supports the concept of multiple
causality. (Perry, 2010, p. 1183) Children with Trisomy 21 can be born... Show more content on

(Chang Kelly, 2007) According to the article published by Salimbene, (2000), children are highly
valued and welcomed in most Bosnian families. Culturally, Bosnian s hold Physician s to a
higher standard than nurses. They may request to hear a diagnoses or treatment options from the
physician rather than a nurse. Teaching may become difficult if a relationship is not formed. The
nurse should introduce themselves and state that the doctor has asked him/her to perform which
ever test or procedure it is that is needed. The purpose of the upcoming testing should be
explained thoroughly without going into the specific details about the procedure. (Salimbene,
2000) Bosnians prefer herbal or spiritual approaches to health care over western health care.
Language barriers may become an issue as well so an interpreter should be utilized as needed to
ensure information is passed along appropriately. It is critical to assess each patient individually
and not make cultural assumptions about a patient s beliefs or health practices. (Chang Kelly,
2007). Many factors affect this process of parental adaptation, for example, the nature and severity
of the child s conditions, preexisting family functioning level, cultural background, income level,
the availability of social support, and the attitude of healthcare providers, especially at the time of
diagnosis. (Choi, Lee Yoo, 2011, p. 113) Providing a calm

End-of-Life Care
An individual patient solution may include actions of a clinician such as a trial of therapy
(Schlairet, 2013). Providers may propose a trial of therapy for an impaired patient that may
offer greater clarity as to whether or not the patient is end stage or has a likely positive outcome.
An agreement to neither intensify nor expand critical care interventions should accompany the
trial if the patient s condition weakens. A transfer of patient by the surrogate decision maker may
be another potential solution. (Schlairet, 2013). A surrogate decision maker may opt to identify
an alternative physician or medical facility for a second opinion regarding the course of action.
This would allow the provider and decision maker to retain their independent positions without
the need for compromise. This action may be limited by insurance coverage, locale, and access
to appropriate care. Clinicians have observed that the DNR order set has a negative connotation
and implies withholding or halting curative therapies (Venkat, 2014 ). As health care providers
focus on the clinical aspect of care a dichotomy is created when the surrogate for the patient
injects emotion into the thought process (Buscaino, 2013). They may perceive their choice to
either be permission to terminate or agree to the DNR order to do all that they can . A study led
by Ruth Wittmann Price and Linda M. Celia, reported that a majority of physicians reported that
they were personally likely to consent to AND for a

Why Is Rameck Important
Rameck could have died. If certain events hadn t transpired, if certain people hadn t been met,
Rameck could have been killed on the streets earlier in his life. Befriending Sam and George
were the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Rameck was intelligent, but he never had the
motivation to fulfill his potential until he saw other people doing it. Seeing his two friends work
hard and study and stay away from trouble inspired him to do the same. He understood that being
surrounded by positive influences could change you, better you. This happened to Rameck, and
he wanted to share the power of positive influences with his stepbrother, Michael. Michael and his
friends accompanied Rameck onto the college campus. Rameck hoped that they d be inspired to
attend, since Michael used to be smart. Michael endured years of bullying and teasing because of
his intelligence, and as a result of this, hid his brain behind a facade of new muscles and toughness.

they wouldn t move. He attempted to scare them by merely puffing himself up and going too close

Scientology Going Clear
In Response to Alex Gibney s Going Clear HBO hired 160 precautionary lawyers prior to the
production of Going Clear, the explosive documentary produced by Alex Gibney that aimed to
expose tightly kept secrets and beliefs of the Church of Scientology. Undeniably controversial,
perhaps what Going Clear does best is gather testimonies of ex church members and officials that
give the viewer an inside look into the church s practices and deep ties to Hollywood stars. In
addition, Going Clear attempts to explain the roots and core beliefs of the church, placing strong
emphasis on the peculiar life of it s founder L. Ron Hubbard. With the copious amount of shocking
information made public by Going Clear, judgements on Scientology s emergence as a world
religion are relevant as ever. To effectively evaluate Scientology and it s inclusion on the world
stage, one must first look back to the roots and beliefs of other world religions and draw
comparison. By contrasting Scientology with other religions, accurate conclusions can be made on
various aspects of its existence, such as its validity, survivability and morality. According to... Show

At Terma, I have been able to expand my knowledge about not only accounting but financeas well.
As a financial analyst intern I had the opportunity to work closely with the financial manager. The
tasks I performed related to accounting, but included a variety of financial duties. I have always
enjoyed accounting and finance; however, I believe a background in accounting will further assist
me if I chose to work in the finance department of a company. While at Terma, I was able to
experience working in administration, human resources, accounting and finance, and even
engineering. HMM was different, and their focus and expertise is accounting. At HMM I have
completed tasks that involved accounts payable, accounts receivable, and tax. These are topics I
have read about in school, but have yet to have the opportunity to actually work on a real account.
Through tutorials and many training sessions, I also learned new concepts that will prepare me for
future accounting classes and employment. My internships this summer have amplified my
knowledge of accounting, and have helped me realize that all of my hard work and dedication to
my studies were well worth it. Mercer taught me the basics, and my internships allowed me to
apply concepts and gain the skills that many entry level accounts do not have. In one year, I will be

  • 2. The Accidental Billionaire Movie Analysis The Controversial Creation of Facebook Based on the novel known as The Accidental Billionaire, The Social Network is a film that explains about the creation and the evolution of Facebook, which is one of the most popular social media in the 21st century. In 2003, Mark Zuckerberg, a young student of Harvard University, encountered a sudden heartbreak from his girlfriend during the dinner. Instead of feeling flat, Mark felt angry and confused; therefore, he decided to fight back. On that night, a crazy idea came up to his mind, where he hacked the Harvard University system and stole all the girls, information including their photos. A few hours later after taking the ladies information with his friend Eduardo Saverin, the two established a social site known as FaceMash. They encouraged the other students to compare the girls faces on this new site. Eventually, the platform paralyzed the school s system and made Mark famous overnight. However, Mark received his first time punishment from the university for his action. Consequently, Mark and Eduardo s site drew more attention from Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler Winklevoss where they invited them to create a Harvard Connection site. Mark and Eduardo accepted the invitation, but at the same time, they continued writing their social platform which they changed to Facebook, taking a reference to Cameron and Tyler s idea. The social site; Facebook, regain high popularity, where more and more users joined. However, Cameron and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond This book review is on Guns, Germs and Steel, by Jared Diamond. The book was very interesting but a lot of the information could have been cut because it s a bit too long. Jared Diamond is a scientist, not a historian and he s American. He upset many historians around the world by the way he bashes Europeans. However, he did win a Pulitzer Prize for the book so that says something. Jared Diamond is a professor of Geography at UCLA and a worldtraveler. He believes that in the past 13,000 years of human history, agriculture has lead humans to conquer, develop and prosper and therefore cause the rise of civilizations. In 1972 he was in New Guinea when he met a local named Yali who asked him a simple question that took years for Diamond to answer. Yali said Why is it that you white peopledeveloped so much cargo [goods] and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own . [Work cited 7] Diamond was profoundly puzzled and couldn t answer right away. In fact it took him many years to come up with what he thinks is the right answer. Yali s question plays a central role in Professor Diamond s enquiry into a short history of everybody for the last 13,000 years , leading him into a wide ranging discussion of the history of human evolutionand diversity through a study of migration, socio economic and cultural adaptation to environmental conditions, and technological diffusion. • 4. Domestic Violence Against Women in Canada Essay Introduction Intimate partner violence has been a significant issue for centuries in all countries. Since 1974, nearly 2,600 spousal homicides have been recorded in Canada (Bunge, 2002). Of these homicides, more than three quarters have been against women. Although through feminism and the women s liberation movement, there has been a slight improvement in the incidences of violence against women, there has also been a drastic change in the perception of the issue by society. After reviewing the most recent literature on violence against womenand victimization through intimate partners, it has become prevalent that there are now two crucial stances that are taken. The first position is that of the women being victimized as the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, changing nature of intimate relationships, increasing gender equality, legislative changes, policy and procedural changes, etc. (Bunge, 2002). Between 1974 and 2000, the homicide rate for women decreased by 62% and the homicide rate for men dropped by more than half 55% (Bunge, 2002) which demonstrates the drastic decline in intimate partner violence including homicides. Secondly, one of the general concepts behind the literature examined would be the idea that intimate partner violence is now going through a process of normalization. For instance, popular women s magazines frame domestic violence in a way that normalizes the victims s responsibility while ignoring the role of the abuser and society (Berns, 2001). Individuals construct their own conceptions of what is normal and acceptable. These conceptions, what Cicourel (1968) calls background expectancies govern all social interaction (Berns, 2001). With the norms that society creates being the main control of interaction amongst society, it is clear that by allowing the perspective of intimate partner violence as normal will create unawareness about the issue and may perpetuate further issues. Women who have respect and power outside the home through community activities, including participation in microcredit schemes, are less likely to be abused than those who do not (Jewkes, 2002). ... • 5. The Effects Of Television Violence On Our Society Our world has a variety of problems today, with violence being at the top of the list, you go anywhere and that is all you here about. Unfortunately it s in front page headlines of the newspaper and broadcasted on the news as top stories. Violence is a very big topic, although it is categorized into many small groups. There is juvenile violence, domestic violence, hate violence, terrorist violence, and violence displaced through various forms of the media. This research will be on violence in the media and does it affect our society. How we view television, has changed the world, no doubt in that. Turn your television set on and pick a channel at random; the odds are that half of the programs you come across will contain violent material. The statistics are overwhelming as I look on the internet, read articles, and look at the research. One of the things that most interests me in the violence on television, is the effects it has on children. Children learn by repetition while watching educational shows, so is learning violence on television an exception? This research paper is directed to parents, educational providers, psychologists in research, clinical practice, and individuals with public advocacy roles and defined by education, age and gender. Both women and men will be a core audience for this paper, as I have come across the fact that adolescent boys and adult men are more drawn to violent television then women. It will draw both genders for different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. A Lady of Letters and Cream Cracker under the Settee by... A Lady of Letters and Cream Cracker under the Settee by Alan Bennett The two monologues I am going to be writing about are two elderly women who are lonely and trapped in their own homes. I will be talking about how Doris, one lady from Cream cracker under the settee and Irene, the other lady in Lady of letters are suffering from loneliness. Doris and Irene both live alone. They don t seem to have any special friends. For example, Irene doesn t like being people calling her Irene. People who come across Irene must call her Miss.Ruddock; nobody has called her Irene since her mother died. Only real friends may call Miss Ruddock Irene. But both Doris and Irene have people who do you look out for them like the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like when she complained to the council about a curb being cracked, little things like this are quite amusing to see such an intelligent women making a fuss. Irene and Doris also have some things in common. They both have lost loved ones in their lives. This is an important story line in both monologues, as I will explain later on. The music in these monologues feels the emotions of what the characters are feeling. When there is a scene where Doris or Irene is happy, the music will go along with the expressions. I could tell when the topic came up on the loved lost ones it was a very dramatic time for Irene and Doris. The music drained out the room with a slow deep beat of a bellow. This makes the monologues more realistic with the different types and style of music, and with the pauses where no music is played at all. Cream cracker under the settee and lady of letters are both set in houses. Which are very stereotypical houses for the elderly, with the dull colours, except in these houses they have horrible bars on their windows that couldn t make Doris and Irene feel very comfortable. There are a number of things I could write for Doris and Irene, imprisonment, lack and loss and the endings of the monologues. But I have chosen to go in deeply about the loneliness and how it has affected them. I feel that this topic is one of the main structures of the monologues. IRENE Starting with ... • 7. Wolsey s Responsibility For His Own Downfall Essay Wolsey s Responsibility For His Own Downfall Thomas Wolsey can be easily viewed as being responsible for his own downfall. John Guy believes that Wolsey was brilliant but flawed. His rise was based on luck, charm, intelligence and opportunism. Wolsey had such high ambitions and gave Henry the idea he was capable of getting him anything, so when Wolsey failed to get Henry a divorce, it was seen as the final nail on the coffin to his downfall. His policies are also a cause to his downfall; Wolsey s foreign policy was a success but also caused problems. WASN T ====== But on Wolsey s rise he made many enemies and had poor relations with nobility. His powerful office and close friendship with Henry earned him many enemies, particularly aristocrats who resented his usurpation of their traditional influence. They also resented his great wealth. Over the years, Wolsey amassed a vast fortune, though he spent lavishly, but he was also charitable and personally financed many diplomatic missionaries. Most of the gentlemen who entered the government service was for financial reward; Wolsey was not different. As the Kings chief minister, he was expected to entertain foreign dignitaries and maintain suitable impressive lifestyle. His increasingly ostentatious displays of wealth did, however, damage both his personal reputation and the church. Wolsey s rise was a cause was a cause to his own fall; he gave Henry very high ambitions and expectations, which Wolsey couldn t always fulfil. His show of his wealth led to his fall; he cause resentment between the upper nobility. We are the heroes of our own lives and are given the opportunities to make decisions that will shape our own personal stories. Life of Pi is a beautiful novel which fits Joseph Campbell s Monomyth (Hero s Journey) archetype, a pattern which has been used to structure stories for generations from all around the world. Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi), the protagonist of the novel, finds himself shaping his life, knowing that each mistake puts his survival at stake. Yann Martelhas written a breathtaking story about the voyage and erudition of Pi. • 9. Analysis Of Matthew Johnson s The Strengths And Weaknesses Moreover, Matthew Johnson effectively challenges conventional views of castles and underscores the complexity of such structures by using a variety of credible sources and evidence. He successfully supports his thesis by covering all his bases and acknowledging different viewpoints. Johnson s analytical methodology helps defend his notion as by examining other academics works he is able to offer greater insight and provide new conclusions; I have discussed what I view as a series of ruptures in other books [...]. Johnson principally presents the strengths and weaknesses of other academics to make up the bulk of the book. He criticizes those with distinctive and limited views and by presenting their weaknesses he is able to further support his thesis. For example, by highlighting the problems associated with the constricted militaryview such as using our modern preconceptions to defend what the intent of the builder at the time was, only aids Johnson s notion that castles cannot be one thing or another but rather more complex. One cannot use their own bias of what was intended or the thought process in order to defend their statement. Another instance where Johnson offers his own inquiry to add dimension and illustrate the intricate nature of castles is in the subheading Ripples from Italy. The author touches on the point that France is often the contender for parallels in late medieval Europe however, that this on its own cannot produce a critical examination of past ... • 10. The Satirical Theme of The Princess Bride, by William Goldman Satire with a funny twist. In the novel The Princess Bride, William Goldman satirizes both fairy tales and the standard literary process through his characters and their actions. Westley, a poor farmer, falls in love with the far from perfect maiden, Buttercup, but has to sail away in order to find his fortunes. Years later, Buttercup, thinking that Westley abandoned her, is forcibly engaged to Prince Humperdinck, a cruel and calculating man. Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo, three mysterious kidnappers, abduct the princess in hopes of causing war between the great nations of Guilder and Florin. These events and characters mirror those in a common fairy tale, but with many twists to them. The author, William Goldman, uses both his role as the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By portraying himself as an editor for the novel, Goldman interjects his personal thoughts into the novel. In the very beginning of the novel he adds parentheses and tells the reader that he will continue to include parenthetical references throughout the novel (46). Even though this is taboo, Goldman gives little regard to the literary industry s rigid limitations, implying the belief that the writing process should not be serious and structured; it should in fact be free flowing and enjoyable. Lastly, Goldman goes on to criticize the literary process by having the ability to step outside of the fairy tale as the editor and comment in a critical perspective. When Goldman removes a soliloquy that S. Morgenstern had to put in this fairy tale he explains that the previous book was bombed by the critics [because it did not include this soliloquy] and didn t [sell] beans (223). Goldman, through his writing, implies that the literary industry is so narrow minded that they constantly attack those who disagree with the accepted writing style. This mockery implies that the literary industry rules reflect its inability to adjust to a changing society. By acting as both the writer and the editor, William Goldman creates a satirical work that implicitly critiques the literary industry. Likewise, Goldman s portrayal of his characters mocks the tropes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Hobbes And Rousseau On The Social Contract Theory Hobbes and Rousseau on the Social Contract Theory The social contract theory focuses on the origin of states and laws, and the impact of regulated communities or states on individuals. All conceptions of the social contract theory can be harmonized to the individual desire for safety or security and the demand for fulfillment through a collective agreement which transforms the human dimension into an organized society from the primordial state. Rousseau was the first philosopher to coin the social contract terminology despite it being recognized in some Greek philosophers works. Thomas Hobbes, however, is widely acknowledged as the founder of the social contract theory within western philosophy (Baird, 2011). As a result, the theories of Rousseau and Locke can be regarded, to some extent, to be based on the disquisitions of Hobbes. Conversely, Locke and Rousseau have transformed the concept of Hobbes to align with their perspectives on society and human nature. Hobbes and Rousseau have significant similarities and differences in their similarities conceptions regarding the social contract theory. Hobbes argues that man naturally desires security and order. It is the quest for security and preservation, as well as the need to avoid pain and misery that made man to get into a contract. Self preservation and protection are widespread in the nature of man and in an attempt to achieve it, man voluntarily surrendered all his rights and freedoms to the authority through the ... Nixon s administration had to face many international and domestic challenges in the United States between 1968 and 1974, some positive and some negative. His achievements in expanding peaceful relationships with both China and the Soviet Union are contrastingly different with his continuation of the Vietnam War. In the end, Nixon s scandals and abuse of presidential power caught up to him, and his administration did much to corrode America s faith in the government. Another thing he did was sign executive orders and international agreements on environmental issues. In early 1973, an international conference was held to discuss endangered species. The product of the conference was the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The U.S. needed a new legislation to meet some of the agreement s provisions and it led to the Endangered Species Act. In Nixon s State of the Union speech in 1973, he called for stronger wildlife protection. The results of these environmental laws and international agreements made the public extremely happy. Even though Nixon s intentions were selfish when he got involved in environmental concerns, he responded unquestionably positive. All his hard work helped pave the way for a cleaner society. Zimbardo s prison experiment at Stanford University was a study on what the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard was on the individual. Twenty four well adjusted undergraduates were selected out of over 75 to play the roles of both guards and prisoners. The guards were permitted to devise most of the rules. A third of the guards exhibited genuine sadistic tendencies, and subjected the prisoners to torture. After the initial rebellion most of the prisoners stopped opposing the guards losing their personal identity and self belief. Zimbardo s research demonstrated that people can behave uncharacteristically when placed, in new social or physical roles and adopt the attitude and behaviour of their perceived roles, in some cases particularly zealously. • 21. The Struggle Between Protestantism And Pluralism The struggle between Protestantism and pluralism in the 19th century In the 19th century, America was experiencing a religious diversity expansion. Religion was an essential part of the established American culture, gaining great influence on the spiritual lives of many. For some, religion meant a special interest, as many saw in religion the power to dominate while others selflessly embraced it as a form to live a harmonious life. Nonetheless, the superiority of some established religions from the times of the colonies dominated over those seeking to fit in a Protestant religious culture. Alexis de Tocqueville, was a French statesman, that while visiting America made a strong observation about the power of religion, he concluded that, One cannot therefore say that in the United States religion influences the laws or political opinions in detail, but it does direct mores, and by regulating domestic life it helps to regulate the state. If religion helped regulate the state, it can be said it contributed a strong element to the seeking of dominance of moral matters according to the visions of some and exclusion of others. The desire for dominance over cultural and religious principles, led the Puritan evangelical insiders and non Protestant outsiders into a religious struggle for spiritual authority in 19th century America. Separation of church and state guaranteed the right and freedom to practice the desire religion in America. Religions came to light since colonial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In terms of the Chinese tribute system we examined in class, the leaders of China s voyages dealt with leaders of countries they visited by treating them based on the tribute gifts they received. Under Confucian civilization, China often received tribute from the foreign states they visited and gave them Chinese products and recognition of their authority and sovereignty in return. There were several tribute states to China including neighboring countries such as Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Borneo, Indonesia, South Asia and Central Asia. However when countries stopped paying tribute to China, there were often tensions. During the Zheng He expeditions many goods were carried to build tribute relationships between the Ming Dynasty and newly discovered kingdoms. Dick, created a world with fantastic solutions for everyday problems; but too much of a good thing is a bad thing. In the novel Ubik, author Philip K. Dick suggested that technology is slowly changing our thoughts and morals to the point that humans can no longer function without it. What exactly is a moral? According to Google, a moral is a person s standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and what is not acceptable for them to do. In other words it s what a person believes is the right thing to do; it s what is thought to be what makes you a trustworthy person. Alexander was a man of courage and influence who strived to complete all that he put his mind to. Ian Worthington writes. Examples of the common roles that Asian Americans play in movies are martial artists, Indian cab drivers, television anchorwomen and prostitutes (RP, 2004). Even if most Americans do not buy into these images because they interact with many Asian Americans who do not fit the stereotype, the areas of concern are those parts in the United States where there isn t a sufficient Asian population (Wu, 2002). There are two forms of the disease major and minor. The major has a mortality rate of 20 40% of untreated individuals. Though major and minor eventually run the same course and the outcome is the same, the major has symptoms that are distinct from the minor form, including hemorrhaging both internally and externally. • 42. Still Life With Tornado Character Analysis In the novel, Still Life With Tornado, by A.S. King, Sarah, a teenager who strives to be original, manifests change throughout the story while portraying the theme, originality is inborn. Sarah is a teenage girl who thinks she is unoriginal. She grows up with parents who hate each other and only stay together for her and her brother s sake. As their marriage gradually falls apart, Sarah has to go through the process with them and try to keep herself together. Sarah, the protagonist, changes throughout the story, as demonstrated by bewilderment, tediousness, and acceptance. In the beginning of the narrative, Sarah demonstrates characteristics of bewilderment. Sarah, a 16 year old high school dropout, is rethinking her life as she says, Maybe my whole life I ve been living inside of an imaginary painting (King 54). Sarah is confused and feels that her childhood was a lie. The readers realize along with her that her parents put on an act to protect her from the fact that they do not get along. This communicates the sense of feeling trapped within lies thought to be true and addresses the message to society that the root of the problem is always bigger than what is expected. Similarly, Sarah asserts her latest assessment regarding herself and her mental state saying, I am not going crazy. I do not need a psychologist. I decide I am an artist inside of a tornado that will not let me go (King 128). Sarah decides she is in a mental state where she cannot portray her feelings. She uses this excuse of being stuck in a tornado to reject the fact that ultimately she will need to get her life back on track and accept who she is. This is another one of Sarah s shenanigans to try to be original, and by doing this, she finds a reason to avert from being a normal person. People today encounter the same situation in everyday life by using excuses to get around inevitable things. Sarah s manifestation of change continues in the middle of the story as well. As Sarah progresses, she shows traits of tediousness. While reflecting on her feelings about herself, she says, I am an umbrella on a day with no rain (King 9). • 44. Morality Is Not The End All Be All Morality is not the End All be All Morality is a set of principles that individuals use to distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad actions. Being the code by which we live our lives, morality is a concept that leaks into almost every aspect of human life. For example, even a mundane activity like eating a sandwich for lunch can have moral implications. Consider this question, was the turkey that ended up on the sandwich raised in horrific factory farm conditions and subjected to torturous treatment? That is a question with heavy moral implications. Distinguishing right action from wrong is a crucial skill for humans to have, but is moralitythe only thing that truly matters about a person. Susan Wolf, an esteemed philosopher, thinks it is not. Wolf argues that morality is just one of many aspects and values of a person. In other words, people are more than just moral beings and we should be happy that this is the case. This paper will provide a brief look at Susan Wolf s argument as well as my argument for why her contention is the correct one. In Schoolyard Bullies by Stephanie Simon, prosecutor James Backstrom maintains school bullies should go to jail. However, I do not think bullies should go to jail, because there are different degrees of bullying. Some bullies are victims, and sending bullies to jail does not cure them. Stopping bullying is the job of parents and schools. Parents play a key role in preventing and responding to bullying. Parents should recognize the warning signs that the child is involved in bullying. Children could be being bullied, bullying others, or witnessing bullying. Although these signs could signal other issues, parents should talk to their children if they display any sort of behavioral or emotional changes. Many times children won t ask for help, so it is important to know what to look for. If the child is at immediate risk of harming himself or others, parents need to get help right away. Just sending the children who are bullies to go to jail, and doing jail time are not a good way to correct children s behaviors. I understand the rationale . . . , but incarceration is a fairly big stick, says Susan Limber, a bullying expert at Clemson University. Providers may propose a trial of therapy for an impaired patient that may offer greater clarity as to whether or not the patient is end stage or has a likely positive outcome. An agreement to neither intensify nor expand critical care interventions should accompany the trial if the patient s condition weakens. A transfer of patient by the surrogate decision maker may be another potential solution. (Schlairet, 2013). A surrogate decision maker may opt to identify an alternative physician or medical facility for a second opinion regarding the course of action. This would allow the provider and decision maker to retain their independent positions without the need for compromise.
