The United States Department of Labor Laws
This paper will discuss the United States Department of Labor laws. Americans are protected under
these laws from injustices that may occur in the work place. There are over a hundred different laws
that have been created by the government and that companies are mandated to adhere by.
One law that many employers teeter the line on crossing on day to day bases is the Fair Labor
Standards Act. This law prescribes standards for wages and overtime pay, which affect most private
and public employment. The act is administered by the Wage and Hour Division. It requires employers
to pay covered employees who are not otherwise exempt at least the federal minimum wage and
overtime pay of one and one half times the regular rate of pay. For nonagricultural operations, it
restricts the hours that children under age 16 can work and forbids the employment of children under
age 18 in certain jobs deemed too dangerous. For agricultural operations, it prohibits the employment
of children under age 16 during school hours and in certain jobs deemed too dangerous (Summary of
the Major Laws of the Department of Labor). I personally have held positions that I thought were
promotions but once in the actual job found out that I am working twenty to thirty hours more a week
and in hindsight bringing in less income. This happens to employee s everyday and employers make
these employees salary so that they do not have to pay them increase wages. It happens more in this
day and time because

Silhouettes In The 50 s
The 1940 s was a turning point in fashion when the New Look by Christian Dior was created in 1947.
The new silhouette included soft rounded shoulders, was nipped in the waist, and had a long full skirt.
This silhouette along with Christian Dior s tight skirted silhouette in dresses and suits and the A line
look all continued into the 1950 s and remained the three main silhouettes for most of the decade. His
three silhouettes influenced all kinds of attire including prom dresses, casual everyday wear and even
children s clothing. Figure 4 shows my great grandmother and grandfather in their home in 1955.
Everyday dresses were very important during this time because many women did not work but still
wanted to remain fashionable in their home.

Canadian National Security
Surveillance and biopolitical governance are terms usually associated with the internal surveillance
methods of the United States, especially in light of the Snowden NSA leaks. However, Canada has
developed an elusive biopolitical national security policy that has both social and political
consequences. In April 2004, the Canada s federal government introduced its first national security
legislation, Securing an Open Society: Canada s National Security Policy (Bell 147). Discussions
surrounding a national security agenda has expanded rapidly since the tragic events of 9/11. Canada
has quoted $690 million in national security policy and strategy however, this only reflects a portion
of the actual total amount of money put towards security and ... Show more content on

Security mechanisms used to protect the entirety of the Canadian state at the behest of certain ethnic
and religious categories become legitimized through violence acts towards political institutions or
figures (Bell 155). These ethnic and religious categories that experience biopolitical racial profiling by
the security state are typically Middle Eastern or Islamic in appearance or action. These groups of
people are increasingly being viewed as connected to terrorist activities in Middle Eastern countries.
Critics arguing the Canada s security regime breaches the Charter of Rights and Freedoms because of
the possible use of surveillance and security provisions against Canadian citizens who are members of
these ethnic and religious groups (Shaffer 200). Racial profiling in the surveillance provisions of these
security acts against politically unpopular groups should not be underestimated (Shaffer

Aging Is Defined As The Process Of Aging
Aging John Pickett Mind, Brain, and Intelligence Aging Aging is defined as the process of growing
old but there are many different things that take place during the process of ageing that help define
what aging truly is. We will explore the steps and stages of aging from birth to the end of life. Erikson
s stages of adult development gives a timeline of physical and mental aging in which the ability to
resolve crisis plays a huge role in successful development over the life span. The trust vs. mistrust
stage takes place from birth to 12 months when an infant learns to trust the person who is caring for
them. If rejection takes place during this stage the infant may believe that all people are not unreliable
and have problems with trusting throughout the stages that follow the trust and mistrust stage.
However if the infant feels secure the parent or caregiver has laid a great foundation that carries over
throughout the stages that follow the trust and mistrust stage. As we age this very foundation may
become key in how we handle relationships throughout the duration of our lives. (Hill, 2005, p. 25)
The autonomy vs. shame and doubt stage is from about 2 to 3 years old when we feel the need to
become independent through simple tasks such as dressing and feeding ourselves. Many first time
parents delay the need for independence for their children at this age for fear of them hurting
themselves and the child may develop self doubt. Self doubt

Network Attacks Using New And Effective Modern Day...
The primary objective of this project is to detect and mitigate various network attacks using new and
effective modern day technologies. 1) Software Defined Networking (SDN) is one of the start of art
technology that will be used in this project to mitigate the attacks like Denial of Service attacks. 2) It
will also help in controlling the data and control plane of the networking devices, which will enable
more options to enhance the security. Implementation of security measures in SDN can free a network
from several network attacks like Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. Another point to be noted is that, if
an administrator had to upgrade the security measures in a traditional network, he would have to
configure all the networking equipment separately with the required security measures. If the
administrator needs to make any future changes to the network, he would have to again have to update
on each and every device separately. This method demands a lot of resources and time. But the
implementation of these security measures in a SDN controller can lead to updating all the devices in
the network at one go. This leads to mitigating different kinds of network attacks at one go. This is the
objective of this project. 1.4 Literature Survey: A. Software Defined Networking (SDN): The
implementation of this project makes use of a lot of modern technologies. However, the state of art
technology in this project is Software Defined Networking [1]. In the Networking community, SDN

The New Deal V. Roosevelt s Digging In
The Great Depression was a hard time for many people. Many parents, and kids, had to have the will
to drive themselves to work many, many jobs. Parents also had to have the ability to stretch every
available dollar (Hastings). In Digging In, the author said his dad sold iron cords door to door, bought
a horse to break gardens, worked a day in the hay , picked peaches, rented out an extra lot for a garden
on the shares, raised some sweet potato slips, painted houses for about $5 a house, hung wallpaper,
sometimes traded an infrequent dozen of eggs at the grocery store, worked at the strip mines one or
two days, cut hair for boys in the neighborhood, guarded the fence at the county fairgrounds, sold coal
orders, and when he could, worked occasionally on WPA, an organization to employ millions of
unemployed workers. That is a lot of work! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Implementation Of A Proactive Management Model
If this plan meets the needs of the agency, the models implementation will be coordinated with Field
Services and managed by Health Protection and Environmental Health Directors to ensure an efficient
and well managed transition. Major tasks include restructuring tanning, home day care, food and
wastewater programs to a centralized system.
2.1 Description of Implementation
The implementation plan is an Environmental Health re structuring alternative for the Tanning, Home
Day Care, Food and Wastewater programs. This model will streamline these programs to increase
efficiency and oversight by management and supervisory staff. A proactive management model
ensures program efficiencies through setting and communicating clear expectations including
performance measures, accountability, quality of inspections, customer surveys, and training designed
to help inspection team members be successful in meeting the expectations. This model ensures
program standardizations and efficiencies by leveraging technology in the form of cellular mobile
devices that reduce burdens on agency IT infrastructure and IT staff.
The model produces increased protective measures through leveraging program expertise; more
consistent interpretation of laws, rules, regulations, and policies; off peak inspections; and focusing
inspection frequency on entities that lack system level compliance. The model also provides an added
benefit to the agency response and recovery resources. A new North, Central,

The Humanistic Study Of History
History is usually considered a part of the humanities, a discipline practiced alongside literature,
languages, philosophy and the arts. The humanistic study of history is mostly based on the
interpretation of the written words and documents and other cultural artifacts created by humans in
ages past. History takes a different approach than most of the other humanities, nonetheless. Instead of
seeing different aspects of humanity like the language or the ideology, history sees humanity as a
whole. It studies evolution and language development; tool making and creative expression; the use of
natural resources and population growth. But above all, the historic approach involves humanistic
interpretation on the background of a rich and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The difference between movies and novels is the fundamental illusion of photography, says Richard
Slotkin, a professor of history at Wesleyan University who has written about the movies as history
genre. Even when you know that something didn t happen, movie photography gives you the illusion
that it did. According to Aristotle History is an account of what individual human beings have done
and suffered . Taking this reference as a base to unravel the topic of the present essay, it is clear the
events that are being analyzed have marked history as both: very harsh and definite decisions, as well
as one of the most suffered moments of humanity. The following essay is focused on the film La Vita
è Bella , later on translated to the English Life is beautiful, with the purpose of analyzing it and
gathering up the knowledge necessary to be able to perform a successful compare and contrast with
the real events that were going on in Italy and Germany during the Second World War. As the final
result of this essay it should be proven the accuracies and inaccuracies of the film La Vita é Bella
(1997) in comparison to the situations lived during the Second World War (1939 1945) in Eastern
Europe. The data given in the movie as well as some research from other sources will be the given
arguments forming this essay. World War 2 was the largest and most violent

thousands of cars. The smoke coming from Subway stations underneath the roads can get to your
nostrils quicker than it can be seen. It almost makes you feel like if you are a big giant walking along
houses under your feet that have smoke coming out of their chimneys. At the same time the smell of
hotdogs stands, salted pretzel stands make you aware of their presence as your smell sensors go crazy,
and start telling your brain to get some. You can try your best but the smell from Italian pizzerias will

Upanishads Vs Herodotus
The Katha Upanishads from ancient India and the Greek historian Herodotus, both define the belief of
the good life. Although there are similarities between the two perspectives, there are also various
differences between the Upanishads and Herodotus. Firstly, they differ in terms of origin. The
Upanishads are a representation of ancient India and Herodotus originates from Greece. It is noted,
that the Greeks originally settled in Greece due to its abundance of gold and silver. Whereas, Indians
settled in India due to the topography or the terrain of the land. India s soil was fertile and good for
growing many crops. There is already an immediate difference between the two, just based on why
each group decided to settle where they did. Furthermore, this outlines perfectly ... Show more content

The Upanishads emphasize that life is full of temptations. More importantly, that these temptations
can be controlled by discovering why they are there to begin with. While the Upanishads use
spirituality to define the good life, Herodotus believes instead that Earthly wealth defines the good
life. Meaning materials wealth, having a faithful wife, being healthy, etc. Additionally, Herodotus
mentions this belief through a series of narratives rather metaphors, that stress the point that a person s
blessings should also be a reflection of an individual s heart. However, both Herodotus and the
Upanishads include in their message the afterlife. They differ in a sense that, the Upanishads link
eternity to the Atman, while Herodotus links the fate of an individual to the afterlife. Meaning,
Herodotus expresses that the true revelation of the good life will not be unveiled until an individual as
passed away. To conclude, the two perspectives of the good life are different between the Upanishads
and Herodotus. Yet they are similar in the sense, of mentioning that the afterlife is the only way to

Corruption In The Film Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
Corruption in the United States government takes the power away from the people and puts it into the
hands of elite groups and politicians. This corruption is prevalent in the film Mr. Smith goes to
Washington . The film has a strong message about corruption in the government, and places an
innocent and naïve character, Mr. Smith in the middle of the corruption. In Washington, Mr. Smith
discovers the corruption that has overtaken the capitol, but does not let it falter his integrity. Although
Mr. Smith is surrounded by corruption, he is able to fight the system and bring some integrity back to
Washington. The film portrays the government in a very negative light and shows how the senators
have no real influence on lawmaking. Mr. Smith s struggles as a senator gave the impression that the
government functions completely on bribery, blackmail, and lies. The film gives a very strong
message about the lack of democracy in American government and politics, along with the ignorance
of the American people. Mr. Smith portrays the average American citizen: he is naïve, has faith in the
democracy, and is ignorant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

made by lobbyists, and continues to do what is right. This leads to many false accusations against Mr.
Smith, and another senator attempts to get Mr. Smith out of office with more lies. Not only do
lobbyists directly attack Mr. Smith, they also attack any press that portrays him favorably. Many
similar scenarios occur in the U.S. government today, and lobbyists have more power than legislators

This paper seeks to analyze the juxtaposition of different images in Canto LXXXIII. What makes The
Cantos interesting is the combination languages such as Chinese characters as well as words in Greek,
German and Italian. The text also includes many allusions to historical and mythological figures and
events from different time periods. The part named The Pisan Cantos was written at the end of the
World War II. While writing Cantos, Pound was kept in Disciplinary Training Center by US army. He
was a supporter of Mussolini which caused him to be accused of treachery, and put into a cage. In his

Eriugenian idea, omnia, quae sunt, lumina sunt means everything that exists is light which is followed
by whatever. This whatever evokes a kind of indifference in readers minds. Then Pound gives
references to Eriugena s bones being dug in the time of Simon IV de Montfort l Amaury. Pound
perfectly connects the ideas about Eriugena and his death by giving reference to Simon IV de
Montfort l Amaury. Eriugena s Neoplatonic ideas and his theories were exploited by the Albigensian
heretics, he was found guilty of being a heretic by Pope Honorius III (Terrell 459). This part suggests
that no matter how hilarious Eurigena s verses were, these magical words could not prevent his
tragedy, he was misunderstood and his ideas were misused. Then, Pound turns to Baudelaire s Les
Paradis n est pas artificial which means Paradise is not artificial, and to W. B. Yeats. Here, Uncle
William refers to W.B. Yeats. He ridicules Yeats stating that while searching for a higher truth, Yeats is
unable to see beauty of the material world. He also adds that Yeats is in the search of something, but
whatever that something is, the search is aimless. Pound implicitly states that natural reality is not
inferior to the higher reality, they complete each other. Yeats fails to grasp the beauty of a statue of the

The Development Of The Horror Genre Throughout The Years
Makhi Hughes
Section 5
15 November, 2016
Final Semester Paper
The Development of the Horror Genre Throughout the Years Both horror and science fiction explore
the boundaries of what is means to be human (Belton, 272). This is done by emphasizing the
dilemmas of the figures who straddle the border of human and non human (Belton, 273). Horror and
Sci fi contain narratives that take on a form of a search for knowledge that will enable the human race
to overcome any obstacle that involves a supernatural force (Belton, 273); the story lines require a
search or journey to resolve the issue. Horror and Sci fi often overlap when there is a monster featured
in a sci fi film; or when a horror film is set in the future (Belton, 271). The two differ in purpose,
horror, a sub genre for sci fi, was created to generate fear through a figure of a monster or supernatural
being. While Sci fi has a chief purpose of focusing on science and reasoning (Belton, 272). The
development of both genres is created to a number of works done throughout the years. The
improvement of special effects, influences from the original masters of suspense, camera angles, and
heightened elements of the horror film genre has allowed it to maintain its popular demand amongst
audiences for decades.

Transvestitism Essay
Transvestitism
In the last few decades, there has been a rapid change in social attitude towards so called sexual
problems. There has been a call for the freedom to live in the style of which one chooses, so long as
no one else is harmed in the process. One area that appears little understood, however, is
transvestitism, or cross dressing. In order to gain some knowledge about this phenomenon, there are
many aspects of transvestitism that should be examined, some being: history, societal views, the gay
versus straight issue, and women dressing as men.
Transvestitism has a long history, ranging from mythical figures to medieval saints who cross dressed;
from the many instances of berdache in anthropological literature to historical ... Show more content

Why, then are most cross dressers secretive about their affection for this? According to Dr. Peggy
Rudd (1995), most are secretive, because they have many fears related to the consequences of having
their big secret discovered. In general, non participants do not consider transvestitism, socially
acceptable. Many cross dressers fear the detrimental effects upon other family members, and many are
concerned about the possibility of losing their job as a result of coming out.
Some cross dressers feel guilty because society has placed them into stereotypes, including the
incorrect assumption that all cross dressers are gay, or that all transvestites are potential transsexuals.
To the contrary, while some are gay, most cross dressers want to share their life with a woman, and the
number of gay males is far less among crossdressers than among the general population (Rudd, 1995).
Most identify primarily as a male who has, and retains, male gender identity. Often they are married,
and the father of children. (Prince, 1971) This in itself presents the question of whether or not to tell
spouses, and/or, their children about this. Many do not, out of fear of being seen as deviant, and
perhaps losing those most dear to them. It is a natural thing for cross dressers to want to share all of
themselves with those they love, but as there is risk of rejection, many choose to wait until they feel
comfortable that the risk has lessened, or keep it a secret forever.

Item Number Exemplified Learning Analysis
The way I determined whether each item number exemplified learning, was by using my definition of
what learning means and what I have been taught it means through this chapter. My definition of
learning is the acquired knowledge or skills one has obtained by being taught, through experience,
and/or by studying. I came up with item numbers 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, and 10 as being examples of learning. I
would say 1, 4, 6, and 7 are not examples of learning. Considering the definition of learning by
Hilgard and Bower, I wouldn t change any of my answers. Here are the reasonings for each number

How did they achieve the market dominance strategy? Seven eleven Japan opened the majority of its
new stores in areas with existing clusters of stores.
This gave them 6 advantages: 1. Boosted distribution efficiency 2. Improved brand awareness 3.
Increased system efficiency 4. Enhanced efficiency of franchise support services 5. Improved

They implemented the pull strategy by offering its stores a choice from a set of 5000 stock keeping

The Problem Of Drugs And Drug Abuse In Israel
America is not the only country in the world that struggles with drug abuse; Israel has similar
problems. It wasn t until the 80 s that drug use in Israel became a central problem. Israel has
developed into a society that is copied after our modern western society. With the reflection of our
western society, Israel received many good points, as well as many bad ones; a drug issue being a
negative effect. The issue of drug abuse mostly effects kids starting in Elementary school.
Unfortunately, drugs are not hard to obtain due to the large black market operations. Drug dealers in
Israel are very business minded and know how to achieve repeat customers. Their tactics include
giving out free drugs to first time users, getting them addicted, and then charging them. This problem
leaves many kids broke and looking for other means to make money many times resorting to illegal
activities. Approximately 300 thousand people in Israel are drug users. Of the 300 thousand, 70
thousand are children between the ages of 12 18. This is 11% of the age group in Israel. 25 thousand
are addicts. Heroin, cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, and LSD are the drugs of choice in Israel. Users
usually need about three doses a day. 100 tons of marijuana is smuggled into Israel through the
Egyptian border. 3 4 tons of heroin and cocaine come through the Lebanese and Jordanian borders. A
cool 20 million tablets of ecstasy and LSD are smuggled by way of sea and air ports. Drug addicts are

Effective Leadership
There are multiple leadership styles and approaches to being an exceptional leader. Leadership has
several functions, but honest behavior versus dishonest behavior has its rewards and consequences. A
leader needs to possess the integrity to be effective for the long term in the corporate atmosphere. The
market conditions create ethical difficulties and create hurdles for leaders throughout decision making.
In the given synopsis, the AIG Company had guaranteed to pay bonuses to executives. But the
financial circumstances had negatively affected the business. Therefore, it would be impracticable to

Michael Dell had found the cause of the issues in the company rather than blaming the CEO, directors,

prior intimation then the employee is terminated. Once I could not go to the job due to some personal

getting counseled, I have changed my attitude and became a real person and never taken leave without

be changed in the long term. The dishonest leaders should be advised subjectively, and a lot of
explanation should be given to them about the outcomes of a particular situation. They must be taught
about the importance of organizational goals, personal ethics, and business ethics. It is also better to
send them to ethical training programs so that they can become moral leaders and benefit the

Philosophy and Christian Theology
Many of the doctrines and concepts central to Christianity have important philosophical implications
or presuppositions. In this article we will take a closer look at some of the central doctrines and
concepts, and their philosophical relevance.
Of course, many philosophically laden doctrines and concepts are relevant to Christianity, and we
cannot discuss them all here. Rather, our focus will be on those concepts and doctrines that are
distinctively Christian, and which have been the focus of a good deal of recent discussion in the
philosophical literature. Thus, although theism is a central Christian concept, it is not distinctively
Christian and so will not be covered here. Further, although views about the Eucharist, a central ...

First, philosophical reasoning might persuade some who do not accept the authority of purported
divine revelation of the claims contained in religious texts. Thus, an atheist who is unwilling to accept
the authority of religious texts might come to believe that God exists on the basis of purely
philosophical arguments. Second, distinctively philosophical techniques might be brought to bear in
helping the theologian clear up imprecise or ambiguous theological claims. Thus, theology might
provide us with information sufficient to conclude that Jesus Christ was a single person with two
natures, one human and one divine, but leave us in the dark about exactly how this relationship
between divine and human natures is to be understood. The philosopher can provide some assistance
here, since, among other things, he or she can help the theologian discern which models are, for
example, logically inconsistent and thus not even candidates for understanding the relationship of
divine and human natures in Christ.
For most of the twentieth century, the vast majority of English language philosophy went on without
much interaction with theology at all. While there are a number of complex reasons for this divorce,
three are especially important. The first is that atheism was the predominant opinion among English
language philosophers throughout much of that century.
A second, quite related reason is that, philosophers in the twentieth century

Uses And Application Of Mission Command Within Operation...
The purpose of this paper is to identify the uses and application of mission command within Operation
Anaconda. Operation Anaconda took place in the Shahikot Valley of eastern Afghanistan in early
March of 2002. The ground commander selected to lead the operation was Major General (MG)
Hagenbeck of the 10th Mountain Division, and for the purpose of this operation, Coalition and Joint
Task Force (CJTF) Mountain. Due to the limited number of troops under his command currently
available in Afghanistan, MG Hagenbeck was given command in addition to one of his own organic
battalions, the 3rd Brigade, 101st Air Assault Division, some Special Operations Force (SOF) units,
and Coalition Forces. This paper will identify MG Hagenbeck s, his staff s, and higher command s use
of the mission command principles during this operation. The principles of mission command are
accept prudent risk, use mission orders, exercise disciplined initiative, provide a clear commander s
intent, create shared understanding, and lastly, build cohesive teams through mutual trust (Mission
Command, 2014).
MG Hagenbeck was presented a problem during the early planning development process. He
commanded an already smaller division of two brigades, with three being the standard size. Of his
division, half of his division headquarters as well as one of his brigades was deployed in Kosovo, as
well as two maneuver battalions assuming Task Force (TF) roles in Bosnia and Sinai, and neither of

A Glimpse Inside Alcoholics Anonymous
A Glimpse Inside Alcoholics Anonymous
Animated in the spirit of Jesus Christ, we value all individuals unique talents, respect their dignity, and
strive to foster their commitment to excellence in our work. Our community s strength depends on the
unity and diversity of our people, on the free exchange of ideas, and on learning, living, and working
harmoniously (Saint Leo University Core Values, Respect).
Introduction. I decided I wanted to visit an Alcoholics Anonymous group meeting in my local area. It
would be a new experience for me because I have never been to that type of meeting before in my life.
I had only heard of A.A. and the support groups they offer throughout the world. They offer meetings
in every state of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and in some International countries (United States
Alcoholics Anonymous). The meeting I attended consisted of about forty three people, both men and
women. The only type of meeting I had ever been to in my life was either church related or business
related. I chose to go to this type of meeting for three reasons; I wanted to get out of my comfort zone,
I have never been around anyone with substance abuse, and I wanted to see the other side of the
spectrum to gain some insights from a different perspective. I am in Human Services for the purpose
of helping others in need. I can better help people if I become knowledgeable in the areas where they
need help the most. I grew up in church my whole life and was raised in a

What Is The Schlieffen Plan
This paper will examine and discuss the German Schlieffen Plan utilized during World War I. The
Schlieffen Plan was designed by Chief of the General Staff of the German Army Alfred von
Schlieffen, as a strategy for invading France, while also holding off Russia. Schlieffen wanted the
attack to be a swift and decisive strike to ensure that France would capitulate quickly, allowing
Germany to send their forces on the French front over to the Russian front, combining their armies
into one force that could then invade Russia. One of the main points of the strategy, was that Germany
would go through Belgium and attack France where it was weaker, instead of the Maginot Line, which
was heavily fortified. The army would then sweep around and take Paris.

Oil Spills May Happen For Many Reasons
Oil Spills may happen for several reasons.
1. When oil tankers have equipment faults. When oil tankers break down, it may get stuck on shallow
land. When the tanker is attempted to move out of shallow land, abrasion may cause a hole in the
tanker that will lead to large amounts of oil being released into the oceanic bodies. However, although
this form of oil spill is the most commonly known and has the highest media attention, only 2% of oil
in water bodies is a result of this action.
2. from nature and human activities on land. The large majority of oil spilled is from natural seeps
geological seeps from the ocean floor as well as leaks that occur when products using petroleum or
various forms of oil are used on land, and the oil is washed off into water bodies.
3. Water Sports. Other causes of oil spills are spills by petroleum users of released oil. This happens
when various water sports or water vehicles such as motorboats and jet skis leak fuel.
4. Drilling works carried out in sea. When drilling works carried out in the sea, the oil and petroleum
used for such activities are released into the sea, thus causing an oil spill.

The Process Of Matching Hospitals And Residents
Problem
Initial Solution
The process of matching hospitals and residents was chaotic and confusing before the NRMP began to
be used in 1952. The main way hospitals chose medical students was to extend an offer to the student
as early as they could. The demand of the hospitals was greater than the number of students looking
for residencies, prompting considerable competition among hospitals for interns. 1 This competition
lead to hospitals presenting students offers earlier than others could. With offers so early, hospitals
could not know the final class standings or grades of the students by the time they finished school.1 In
the most extreme cases, hospitals would send offers to students two years preceding the internship.1 In
1926, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The small adjustments began in 1945; the first of which would help students by resolving that
hospitals should allow students 10 days after an offer had been made to consider whether to accept or
reject it. 1 In the year 1946, another change was made and students were given up to eight days to
respond.1 In 1949, the AAMC proposed that appointments should be made by telegram at 12:01 A.M.,
November 15, with applicants not required to accept or reject them until 12:00 noon the same day.
Even this 12 hour waiting period was rejected by the American Hospital Association (AHA) as too
long 1. They agreed on the Appointment of Interns which contained that no specified waiting period
after 12:01 A.M. is obligatory 3. Even after these changes were made, it was clear that there were still
problems in the matching process. In order to avoid these problems and the costs they imposed, it was
proposed, and ultimately agreed, that a more centralized matching procedure should be tried 1.
Second Iteration of the Solution
Ultimately, the students were unhappy with modified original system. Their decisions had to be made
quickly and without the ability to consider other offers. The hospitals had to select students before the
students had developed any notable skills or even knew their specialty. Named as a form of congestion
and market failure by Roth in 2008, it was evident that changes in the residency matching program
needed to be made. Thus,

Juan Ponce de León
Born in Santervás de Campos, Spain, in 1460, Juan Ponce de León had sailed on expeditions with
Christopher Columbus, and then sailed to the New World on expeditions of his own later on. Although
most commonly known for his exploration for the Fountain of Youth, Ponce de León proved to be a

Juan Ponce had explored the idea of traveling to Puerto Rico when the natives, Taino Indians, of a

Allegory In Lord Of The Flies Chapter Summary
Visualize yourself stranded in an island with people who are as confused as you are. There are no
rules, no governments, and no leaders. How would you act? Would you set up some sort of nation
state and immediately take to a role as a leader and create rules? Or take a different approach of
having fun and enjoy yourself while there s no authority? Lord of the Flies by William Golding was
written in the 1950 s. The route Golding took to writing this book is in a form of an allegory. An
allegory is a story that has a hidden meaning behind it, and this takes analyzing the text to figure the
secret meaning. The story takes place in an island where two boys, Ralph and Piggy, were stranded by

Jack tries to make the boys go against Ralph because he thinks that Ralph is doubting his hunters.
Although, his effort to overthrow Ralph is unsuccessful because none of the boys raises their hands to
re elect Jack as leader. As a result, Jack parts ways from Ralph and the rest of the boys. Jack s first
order for his hunters is to find meat, and it is successfully done because he kills a female sow. In order
to lure the rest of the boys to his tribe Jack offers food ... and my hunters will protect you from the
beast. Who will join my tribe? (Golding 134). Bribing means to persuade people with a gift. What
motivates Jack to become leader is the fact that everyone will be on his side and not Ralph s.Thus, he
offers the other boys meat which the boys long for after having a diet of fruit and water. Additionally,
he provides protection because he knows that the boys fear the beast. The lesson that gaining
leadership requires bribing proves that he loses his innocence through the symbol of the conch
because the route to his actions is to take away power from Ralph since Ralph gets his power from the
conch because it symbolizes authority. Therefore, Jack loses his innocence because his intentions are
not well. Moreover, Jack learns the lesson that privatizing property on the island is beneficial. Ralph,
who is still persistent on keeping his role as chief, reminds Jack that there s rules that

The Incident Command System Today, the Incident Command System (ICS) is a major component of
NIMS and is widely used in emergency management response. However, this was not always the case.
According to David A. McEntire and Gregg Dawson, authors of the article, The intergovernmental
Context, ICS was originally developed by the fire service in 1970. Its purpose was to assist in the
command of wildfire events. It was unique because it standardized operations, yet offered flexibility
so that it could be used on any number of events, regardless of size or type (McEntire Dawson, 2007,
p. 63).
The book, National Incident Management System: Principles and Practice, by Dr. Donald W. Walsh,
Dr. Hank T. Christen, Christian E. Callsen, Geoffrey T. Miller, Paul M. Maniscalco, Graydon C. Lord,
and Neal J. Dolan, describes ICS as, ...a system for domestic incident management that is based on an

that ICS is commonly used by all levels of government as well as by a number of non governmental
agencies and the private sector. ICS is structured around five sections. These sections are command,
operations, planning, logistics, and finance/administration (Walsh, et al., 2012,

Mayan Genocide
Decolonization can cause a great deal of tension between the colonizers and the colonized of a
country. This is especially true for the country of Guatemala, where Spanish colonizers settled on and
started to conquer Mayan or indigenous peoples land. During the late 1900 s, a civil war broke out
between the indigenous people and the government of Guatemala. The result of the civil war was a
genocide, killing and displacing thousands of innocent Mayan s; and destroying most of their land.
The government attempted to abolish the indigenous people because they feared that the Mayan s
were turning communistic.(Rey 241) A genocide was started that would remove the Mayan culture

Judy Attfield Gender
I have chosen to discuss Judy Attfield s text, FORM/female FOLLOWS FUNCTION/male: Feminist
Critiques of Design because she talks to her audience about her present and historical experience of
what it is like to be a female designer in what people consider to be a more masculine line of work.
Attfield allows her feminism to flourish in a distinctive style of writing which not only engages the
reader but also the problematic practice of being a female designer.
Attfield discusses the current situation of discrimination and inequality in the design business that she
has faced by telling the reader that she is providing the normally silent with the power of speech. The
designer s statement instinctively intrigues the reader by alluding that the text is speaking for people
that haven t had their voices heard before as it is written by a female designer. Attfield s portrayal of
the women in her book, showing it in a fresh light due to the reader being able to tell that what they
are reading is a text by one of the silent who can speak passionately of the discrimination received by
women in the design industry. Throughout the text it seems that the author has been objectified to the
same prejudice due to her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Stalemate On The Western Front Research Paper
The stalemate on the Western Front was a predicament which was not foreseen by either the Allies or
Central Powers. The stalemate that had established by the commencement of 1915 was the
ramification of a multitude of factors. These factors emerged due to the failures of the Allies and
Central Powers war plans and their implementation of unsuccessful and obsolete tactics, the
fluctuating nature of warfare and naive prospects of war.
The unrealistic expectations of war by all European nations directly contributed to the development of
stalemate on the Western Front. With the commencement of war in August 1914, there was a
communal excitement and credence that the war would be brief, glorious and over by Christmas .
Military commanders placed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both sides originally believed that the Great War would be over quickly. In Germany, this belief was
based on the long established Schlieffen Plan. The German generals were confident in the success of
the war plan that Kaiser Wihlem II proclaimed that he would have Paris for lunch, St. Petersburg for
dinner , enticing that Paris would be captured in 42 days and would then shift their focus to the
Eastern Front and defeat the Russians. The Schlieffen plan however relied on strict timing, with no
interruptions in its timetable and the assumption that Russia would still be feeble after their defeat in
the Russo Japanese War, thus taking longer to mobilise. With the failure of not considering other
alternatives, Schlieffen s conception assumed the absence of any enemy in which was ...an astonishing
assumption for a commander (AJP Taylor). Schlieffen retired in 1906 and was replaced swiftly by
Helmuth von Moltke whom was considered a more vigilant and audacious leader, preceding to his
amendments of the original plan, dooming the plan before it was ever launched (L.C.F. Turner).
Moltke disregarded the original plan of luring the French into Germany through Alsace Lorraine, and
instead diverted a portion of men from the upper right hook into Paris and to the defence of Alsace
Lorraine. Furthermore, Moltke made the decision to not travel through Holland and make use of their
rail system. As a result, the German Army became bottlenecked and their fighting power was
practically numbed by physical exhaustion due to their supplies [failing] to keep pace (Liddel Hart). In
turn, French strategy was heavily preoccupied with breaking German borders through Alsace
Lorraine, thus neglecting defence along the Belgian border, allowing Germany to penetrate these
borders and advance closer towards Paris. Heavy

Fragility Of Fertility

The Fragility of Dominance
Machismo is an attitude, quality or way of behaving that agrees with traditional ideas of masculinity,
defining the stature of a man by his predisposed dominant nature. It is in this domination that the
fragility of the masculine condition is recognized, conceptually the natural philosophy relies on
incessant validation through the means of domination. However, masculinity becomes a reaction
against passivity which leads to a self destructive identity proving its fragility as an ideology and not a
biological reality. In Blood Wedding, Francisco Lorca defines masculine fragility as the perpetual need
to validate one s own machismo, making a commentary on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Furthermore, Lorca uses the knife to symbolize an invention of man, which is created to keep men in
their place and regain complete control of power. The mother states He d still be with us here if men
hadn t invented knives. (Lorca 18) This symbol enhances the violent nature of masculinity, and is fully
developed as it becomes the death of both Leonardo and the bridegroom as the mother states in the
closing of the play, Neighbours: with a knife, with a little knife, on a day appointed, between two and
three, the two love driven men killed each other. With a knife. With a little knife that hardly fits into
the hand; but which nearly enters the astonished flesh and stood at the place where lies trembling,
enmeshed, the dark root of the scream. (Lorca 63) Also prominently featured is the imagery in the
death of the characters that echoes the violent nature of man, Torn flowers their eyes, and their teeth
two fistfuls of snow frozen hard. The two of them fell, and the bride is coming back with blood soaked
skirt and hair. Covered with two blankets they re coming on the shoulders of tall young men. So it
was; just that. It was right. Over the flower of gold, filthy sand. (Lorca 61) The image created by the
comparison of the men s eyes to torn flowers and the bride covered in blood is savage in nature and it
comments on violence becoming an institutionalized form of resolving conflict between males. Lorca
further demonstrates this through the use of language associated with the confrontation of Leonardo
and the bridegroom, that s right. The greatest hunt there ever was. (Lorca 53) The confrontation of the
two men becomes a hunt , implying a battle with a sole survivor. Lorca embodies this as Leonardo and
the Bridegroom die in the fear of weakness and

Why Is John F Kennedy Important
Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names (John F. Kennedy Quotes). John F. Kennedy was a
very influential man in American history, along with one of the most recognizable names in the world.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the thirty fifth president of the United States from 1961 to 1963. During
the time of his presidency, the Vietnam War and conflicts were in full effect. It took one of the best
leaders in American history to lead the nation in this time. He greatly helped the Civil Rights
movement in America. President Kennedy was an influential man throughout the 1950 s and 1960 s.

He did not enjoy the position that much and only served three terms from 46 52 (John F. Kennedy).
Kennedy wanted more opportunity and in 1952 ran for a seat in the senate, and again easily won the
election due to aforementioned reasons. John showed that fire in his belly that his father had instilled
in him as a child of winning no matter what. He had put together a great campaign and was looked at
as a popular political figure in the nation. A short period time later, John met his wife, Jacqueline

(John F. Kennedy) in which he won the Pulitzer Prize for in 1957. John F. Kennedy to this day is the
only president in American history to have won the Pulitzer Prize. Kennedy spent 8 years in the
Senate and was very uninterested in the Massachusetts issues he discussed. He was much more

Army Nurses In World War 2 Essay
In 1943, Congresswoman Frances Payne Bolton said Nurses are grand people, human creatures who
will go through pretty much anything to ease pain , and it accurately describes women of the Army
Nurse Corps in World War II. They were exceptional people who embodied compassion, dedication,
and professionalism to their fellow comrades in the war. Their heart and soul was dedicated to the
wounded military men; when they were wounded, the nurses were wounded. However, even through
the emotional and physical hardships, these women overcame the obstacles and successfully did their
job. Uncle Sam had more than just nephews; he acquired many nieces during this War known as Army
nurses. These girls strived to take the best possible care of husbands, sons, and the sweethearts in
order for them to fight another day and come home to the ones they love. Their stories have been
silent though. When one thinks of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

many World War II women veterans Army nurses, WACs, Women Marines, SPARS, and WASPs to

personal interviews, meetings with former army nurses, official army reports, and the memoirs of
Theresa Archbard and Ruth Haskell. Throughout the book, the author made sure to emphasize the
experiences of the nurses themselves, quoting them directly whenever possible in an effort to let the
women speak for themselves , but she also includes how the U.S. Army Nurse Corps mobilized,
expanded, and adapted to the demands of a world war . The author believes that the pressure of war
compelled the Army Nurse Corps leadership to modify [the] cherished traditions of being an

Comparison Of Professor Marsten And The Wonder Woman
As far as who will write the script for this adaptation, I would like to have the author of the book also
pen the screenplay. It is his story and I want to respect that ultimately any changes made to the
material would be changing his vision, and because of this I would like to give him more creative
license over the film. He also currently still owns the rights to the material and I believe that he will be
more likely to hand them over to someone if he is promised a say in the final product. It seems that
one of the main reasons authors do not sell the rights to their material, is because they are concerned
about not having any creative license in the final product. In allowing Dale Peck to write the
screenplay, not only will the film maintain the tone of the book, it will also motive him to allow the
film to be made in the first place. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is an upcoming director, who recently directed Professor Marsten and The Wonder Women, a
small but incredible film, about the creator of Wonder Woman and his two wives. As I stated
previously, I think that diversity both in front of and behind the camera is extremely important. For
this reason, it was important to me to hire a female director. Women so rarely get the chance to direct
and I feel that having a female perspective would add a lot to this film. I also feel that Angela
Robinson is specifically the right choice because she has experience working on indie films that have
strong connections to the LGBTQ community. Her previous film, while very different from this one,
deals with some of the same broad topics. In addition, she is extremely talented but fairly unknown,
making her a cheaper option to a big

The Depiction of Women in Literary Texts
The Depiction of women in literary texts differed throughout history and varied in different regions of
the world. In numerous cases, women are portrayed as submissive, obedient, totally devoted to their
family and inferior to men, which most often is the definition of femininity. However, in the text She
written by H. Rider Haggard and well known The Arabian Nights oral folk tales translated by Husain
Haddawy, women are portrayed in a different fashion. The text She by H. Haggard portrays a woman
who has lived for millennia and rules a tribe deep in Africa with terror brought by the power she
acquired from the Spirit of the Globe (Haggard 257). The Arabian Nights features a woman that uses
her intelligence to keep herself alive. The portrayal of women in these texts differ from traditional
submissive traits, in contrast, they are portrayed as intelligent and knowledgeable. I will explore the
similarities between these two women in terms of modern femininity and differences in terms of
additional masculine traits of Ayesha that are absent in Shahrazad.
Ayesha from She displays certain traits that resemble some of the traditional definition of masculinity,
including power and aggressiveness. Ayesha defies the traditional women s role of staying home and
devoting all their time and energy to their children and husband; instead, she is the ruler of an African
tribe. Ayesha is a relentless leader who blast[s] them [Amahaggers] for very sport (Haggard 146). This

The Importance Of Taxing IRS
When it comes to taxes, people often make mistakes which are quite normal. However, when these
mistakes lead the IRS to perform audits of your business or personal assets, repaying them can be a
burden. While it is required by the IRS that you pay your taxes in full, circumstances may prevent you
from doing so, but if your taxes aren t paid in full the IRS will charge a penalty. No need to worry,
however, because there are different ways for you to resolve this issue. To learn how to resolve your
tax debt, read the guide below and begin paying the IRS the money you owe Uncle Sam.

example, if you have to sell your property at a loss in order for you to pay your taxes that would be

  • 2. The United States Department of Labor Laws This paper will discuss the United States Department of Labor laws. Americans are protected under these laws from injustices that may occur in the work place. There are over a hundred different laws that have been created by the government and that companies are mandated to adhere by. One law that many employers teeter the line on crossing on day to day bases is the Fair Labor Standards Act. This law prescribes standards for wages and overtime pay, which affect most private and public employment. The act is administered by the Wage and Hour Division. It requires employers to pay covered employees who are not otherwise exempt at least the federal minimum wage and overtime pay of one and one half times the regular rate of pay. For nonagricultural operations, it restricts the hours that children under age 16 can work and forbids the employment of children under age 18 in certain jobs deemed too dangerous. For agricultural operations, it prohibits the employment of children under age 16 during school hours and in certain jobs deemed too dangerous (Summary of the Major Laws of the Department of Labor). I personally have held positions that I thought were promotions but once in the actual job found out that I am working twenty to thirty hours more a week and in hindsight bringing in less income. This happens to employee s everyday and employers make these employees salary so that they do not have to pay them increase wages. It happens more in this day and time because ... The new silhouette included soft rounded shoulders, was nipped in the waist, and had a long full skirt. This silhouette along with Christian Dior s tight skirted silhouette in dresses and suits and the A line look all continued into the 1950 s and remained the three main silhouettes for most of the decade. His three silhouettes influenced all kinds of attire including prom dresses, casual everyday wear and even children s clothing. Canadian National Security Surveillance and biopolitical governance are terms usually associated with the internal surveillance methods of the United States, especially in light of the Snowden NSA leaks. However, Canada has developed an elusive biopolitical national security policy that has both social and political consequences. In April 2004, the Canada s federal government introduced its first national security legislation, Securing an Open Society: Canada s National Security Policy (Bell 147). Discussions surrounding a national security agenda has expanded rapidly since the tragic events of 9/11. These groups of people are increasingly being viewed as connected to terrorist activities in Middle Eastern countries. Critics arguing the Canada s security regime breaches the Charter of Rights and Freedoms because of the possible use of surveillance and security provisions against Canadian citizens who are members of these ethnic and religious groups (Shaffer 200). • 5. Aging Is Defined As The Process Of Aging Aging John Pickett Mind, Brain, and Intelligence Aging Aging is defined as the process of growing old but there are many different things that take place during the process of ageing that help define what aging truly is. We will explore the steps and stages of aging from birth to the end of life. Erikson s stages of adult development gives a timeline of physical and mental aging in which the ability to resolve crisis plays a huge role in successful development over the life span. The trust vs. mistrust stage takes place from birth to 12 months when an infant learns to trust the person who is caring for them. If rejection takes place during this stage the infant may believe that all people are not unreliable and have problems with trusting throughout the stages that follow the trust and mistrust stage. However if the infant feels secure the parent or caregiver has laid a great foundation that carries over throughout the stages that follow the trust and mistrust stage. As we age this very foundation may become key in how we handle relationships throughout the duration of our lives. (Hill, 2005, p. 25) The autonomy vs. shame and doubt stage is from about 2 to 3 years old when we feel the need to become independent through simple tasks such as dressing and feeding ourselves. Many first time parents delay the need for independence for their children at this age for fear of them hurting themselves and the child may develop self doubt. Self doubt ... • 6. Network Attacks Using New And Effective Modern Day... The primary objective of this project is to detect and mitigate various network attacks using new and effective modern day technologies. 1) Software Defined Networking (SDN) is one of the start of art technology that will be used in this project to mitigate the attacks like Denial of Service attacks. 2) It will also help in controlling the data and control plane of the networking devices, which will enable more options to enhance the security. Implementation of security measures in SDN can free a network from several network attacks like Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. Another point to be noted is that, if an administrator had to upgrade the security measures in a traditional network, he would have to configure all the networking equipment separately with the required security measures. If the administrator needs to make any future changes to the network, he would have to again have to update on each and every device separately. This method demands a lot of resources and time. But the implementation of these security measures in a SDN controller can lead to updating all the devices in the network at one go. This leads to mitigating different kinds of network attacks at one go. This is the objective of this project. 1.4 Literature Survey: A. Software Defined Networking (SDN): The implementation of this project makes use of a lot of modern technologies. A proactive management model ensures program efficiencies through setting and communicating clear expectations including performance measures, accountability, quality of inspections, customer surveys, and training designed to help inspection team members be successful in meeting the expectations. This model ensures program standardizations and efficiencies by leveraging technology in the form of cellular mobile devices that reduce burdens on agency IT infrastructure and IT staff. The model produces increased protective measures through leveraging program expertise; more consistent interpretation of laws, rules, regulations, and policies; off peak inspections; and focusing inspection frequency on entities that lack system level compliance. The humanistic study of history is mostly based on the interpretation of the written words and documents and other cultural artifacts created by humans in ages past. However, both Herodotus and the Upanishads include in their message the afterlife. They differ in a sense that, the Upanishads link eternity to the Atman, while Herodotus links the fate of an individual to the afterlife. This corruption is prevalent in the film Mr. Smith goes to Washington . The film has a strong message about corruption in the government, and places an innocent and naïve character, Mr. Smith in the middle of the corruption. In Washington, Mr. Smith discovers the corruption that has overtaken the capitol, but does not let it falter his integrity. Although Mr. Smith is surrounded by corruption, he is able to fight the system and bring some integrity back to Washington. The film portrays the government in a very negative light and shows how the senators have no real influence on lawmaking. Mr. Smith s struggles as a senator gave the impression that the government functions completely on bribery, blackmail, and lies. What makes The Cantos interesting is the combination languages such as Chinese characters as well as words in Greek, German and Italian. The text also includes many allusions to historical and mythological figures and events from different time periods. The part named The Pisan Cantos was written at the end of the World War II. While writing Cantos, Pound was kept in Disciplinary Training Center by US army. He was a supporter of Mussolini which caused him to be accused of treachery, and put into a cage. Pound perfectly connects the ideas about Eriugena and his death by giving reference to Simon IV de Montfort l Amaury. Eriugena s Neoplatonic ideas and his theories were exploited by the Albigensian heretics, he was found guilty of being a heretic by Pope Honorius III (Terrell 459). This part suggests that no matter how hilarious Eurigena s verses were, these magical words could not prevent his tragedy, he was misunderstood and his ideas were misused. Then, Pound turns to Baudelaire s Les Paradis n est pas artificial which means Paradise is not artificial, and to W. B. Yeats. Here, Uncle William refers to W.B. Yeats. He ridicules Yeats stating that while searching for a higher truth, Yeats is unable to see beauty of the material world. He also adds that Yeats is in the search of something, but whatever that something is, the search is aimless. • 14. The Development Of The Horror Genre Throughout The Years Makhi Hughes Section 5 15 November, 2016 Final Semester Paper The Development of the Horror Genre Throughout the Years Both horror and science fiction explore the boundaries of what is means to be human (Belton, 272). This is done by emphasizing the dilemmas of the figures who straddle the border of human and non human (Belton, 273). Horror and Sci fi contain narratives that take on a form of a search for knowledge that will enable the human race to overcome any obstacle that involves a supernatural force (Belton, 273); the story lines require a search or journey to resolve the issue. Horror and Sci fi often overlap when there is a monster featured in a sci fi film; or when a horror film is set in the future (Belton, 271). The two differ in purpose, horror, a sub genre for sci fi, was created to generate fear through a figure of a monster or supernatural being. While Sci fi has a chief purpose of focusing on science and reasoning (Belton, 272). The development of both genres is created to a number of works done throughout the years. The improvement of special effects, influences from the original masters of suspense, camera angles, and heightened elements of the horror film genre has allowed it to maintain its popular demand amongst audiences for decades. Although Native Americans have passed legends about werewolves, evil spirits, and monsters from tribe to tribe since before the 14th century, it was not until this time that spiritual literature emerged with the ... • 16. Transvestitism Essay Transvestitism In the last few decades, there has been a rapid change in social attitude towards so called sexual problems. There has been a call for the freedom to live in the style of which one chooses, so long as no one else is harmed in the process. One area that appears little understood, however, is transvestitism, or cross dressing. In order to gain some knowledge about this phenomenon, there are many aspects of transvestitism that should be examined, some being: history, societal views, the gay versus straight issue, and women dressing as men. Transvestitism has a long history, ranging from mythical figures to medieval saints who cross dressed; from the many instances of berdache in anthropological literature to historical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why, then are most cross dressers secretive about their affection for this? According to Dr. Peggy Rudd (1995), most are secretive, because they have many fears related to the consequences of having their big secret discovered. In general, non participants do not consider transvestitism, socially acceptable. Many cross dressers fear the detrimental effects upon other family members, and many are concerned about the possibility of losing their job as a result of coming out. Some cross dressers feel guilty because society has placed them into stereotypes, including the incorrect assumption that all cross dressers are gay, or that all transvestites are potential transsexuals. To the contrary, while some are gay, most cross dressers want to share their life with a woman, and the number of gay males is far less among crossdressers than among the general population (Rudd, 1995). Most identify primarily as a male who has, and retains, male gender identity. Often they are married, and the father of children. (Prince, 1971) This in itself presents the question of whether or not to tell spouses, and/or, their children about this. Many do not, out of fear of being seen as deviant, and perhaps losing those most dear to them. It is a natural thing for cross dressers to want to share all of themselves with those they love, but as there is risk of rejection, many choose to wait until they feel comfortable that the risk has lessened, or keep it a secret forever. Item Number Exemplified Learning Analysis The way I determined whether each item number exemplified learning, was by using my definition of what learning means and what I have been taught it means through this chapter. My definition of learning is the acquired knowledge or skills one has obtained by being taught, through experience, and/or by studying. I came up with item numbers 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, and 10 as being examples of learning. I would say 1, 4, 6, and 7 are not examples of learning. Thus, an atheist who is unwilling to accept the authority of religious texts might come to believe that God exists on the basis of purely philosophical arguments. Second, distinctively philosophical techniques might be brought to bear in helping the theologian clear up imprecise or ambiguous theological claims. Thus, theology might provide us with information sufficient to conclude that Jesus Christ was a single person with two natures, one human and one divine, but leave us in the dark about exactly how this relationship between divine and human natures is to be understood. The philosopher can provide some assistance here, since, among other things, he or she can help the theologian discern which models are, for example, logically inconsistent and thus not even candidates for understanding the relationship of divine and human natures in Christ. • 38. Allegory In Lord Of The Flies Chapter Summary Visualize yourself stranded in an island with people who are as confused as you are. There are no rules, no governments, and no leaders. How would you act? Would you set up some sort of nation state and immediately take to a role as a leader and create rules? Or take a different approach of having fun and enjoy yourself while there s no authority? Lord of the Flies by William Golding was written in the 1950 s. The route Golding took to writing this book is in a form of an allegory. An allegory is a story that has a hidden meaning behind it, and this takes analyzing the text to figure the secret meaning. Jack tries to make the boys go against Ralph because he thinks that Ralph is doubting his hunters. Although, his effort to overthrow Ralph is unsuccessful because none of the boys raises their hands to re elect Jack as leader. As a result, Jack parts ways from Ralph and the rest of the boys. Jack s first order for his hunters is to find meat, and it is successfully done because he kills a female sow. In order to lure the rest of the boys to his tribe Jack offers food ... and my hunters will protect you from the beast. Who will join my tribe? (Golding 134). Bribing means to persuade people with a gift. What motivates Jack to become leader is the fact that everyone will be on his side and not Ralph s.Thus, he offers the other boys meat which the boys long for after having a diet of fruit and water. Additionally, he provides protection because he knows that the boys fear the beast. The lesson that gaining leadership requires bribing proves that he loses his innocence through the symbol of the conch because the route to his actions is to take away power from Ralph since Ralph gets his power from the conch because it symbolizes authority. Therefore, Jack loses his innocence because his intentions are not well. Moreover, Jack learns the lesson that privatizing property on the island is beneficial. The NRF was developed from a long line of response guidance plans. The first was the Federal Response plan which was replaced by the National Response Plan. The Incident Command System Today, the Incident Command System (ICS) is a major component of NIMS and is widely used in emergency management response. However, this was not always the case. According to David A. McEntire and Gregg Dawson, authors of the article, The intergovernmental Context, ICS was originally developed by the fire service in 1970. Its purpose was to assist in the command of wildfire events. It was unique because it standardized operations, yet offered flexibility so that it could be used on any number of events, regardless of size or type (McEntire Dawson, 2007, p. 63). The book, National Incident Management System: Principles and Practice, by Dr. Donald W. Walsh, Dr. Hank T. Christen, Christian E. Callsen, Geoffrey T. Miller, Paul M. Maniscalco, Graydon C. Lord, and Neal J. Dolan, describes ICS as, ...a system for domestic incident management that is based on an expandable, flexible structure... (Walsh, et al., 2012, p. 12). Due to this flexibility, Walsh et al. state that ICS is commonly used by all levels of government as well as by a number of non governmental agencies and the private sector. The Schlieffen plan however relied on strict timing, with no interruptions in its timetable and the assumption that Russia would still be feeble after their defeat in the Russo Japanese War, thus taking longer to mobilise. Brandstetter ENG3UH 01 January 22, 2016 The Fragility of Dominance Machismo is an attitude, quality or way of behaving that agrees with traditional ideas of masculinity, defining the stature of a man by his predisposed dominant nature. It is in this domination that the fragility of the masculine condition is recognized, conceptually the natural philosophy relies on incessant validation through the means of domination. With a knife. With a little knife that hardly fits into the hand; but which nearly enters the astonished flesh and stood at the place where lies trembling, enmeshed, the dark root of the scream. (Lorca 63) Also prominently featured is the imagery in the death of the characters that echoes the violent nature of man, Torn flowers their eyes, and their teeth two fistfuls of snow frozen hard. The two of them fell, and the bride is coming back with blood soaked skirt and hair. Covered with two blankets they re coming on the shoulders of tall young men. So it was; just that. It was right. Over the flower of gold, filthy sand. (Lorca 61) The image created by the comparison of the men s eyes to torn flowers and the bride covered in blood is savage in nature and it comments on violence becoming an institutionalized form of resolving conflict between males. Lorca further demonstrates this through the use of language associated with the confrontation of Leonardo and the bridegroom, that s right. The greatest hunt there ever was. He also currently still owns the rights to the material and I believe that he will be more likely to hand them over to someone if he is promised a say in the final product. It seems that one of the main reasons authors do not sell the rights to their material, is because they are concerned about not having any creative license in the final product. In numerous cases, women are portrayed as submissive, obedient, totally devoted to their family and inferior to men, which most often is the definition of femininity. However, in the text She written by H. Rider Haggard and well known The Arabian Nights oral folk tales translated by Husain Haddawy, women are portrayed in a different fashion. The text She by H. Haggard portrays a woman who has lived for millennia and rules a tribe deep in Africa with terror brought by the power she acquired from the Spirit of the Globe (Haggard 257). The Arabian Nights features a woman that uses her intelligence to keep herself alive. The portrayal of women in these texts differ from traditional submissive traits, in contrast, they are portrayed as intelligent and knowledgeable. I will explore the similarities between these two women in terms of modern femininity and differences in terms of additional masculine traits of Ayesha that are absent in Shahrazad.
