Burning Down The House By Neil Bernstein
Burning Down the House Review
America s answer for dealing with crime prevention is locking up adult offenders in correctional
facilities with little rehabilitation for reentry into society. American response for crime prevention for
juvenile s offenders is the same strategy used against adult offenders taken juvenile offenders miles
away from their environment and placed in adult like prisons. However the way juvenile our house
and treated while in the care of state corrections officer is more detrimental mental and physical health
of juvenile offenders as explained in Neil Bernstein (2014) Burning down the House. Neil Bernstein
(2014) takes an in depth look into juvenile prisons facilities practices and procedures that has a life
altering effect on juveniles entering correctional facilities. Many juveniles who entered the juvenile
justice system are victims themselves of parental mistreatment such as neglect, physical, and
emotional abuse. Once children into the juvenile system and is labeled a juvenile similar to adults
being labeled a felon. These young offenders are stigmatized as criminal with little distinction
between adults and juvenile offenders entering the prison system for the first time. Bernstein (2014)
paints a vivid picture of how incarcerated juveniles expose to a new set of challenges such as
posttraumatic stress syndrome, curtailed education, gang affiliation, and a gladiator mentality. These
challenges that can develop in juvenile facility has

The Ford Pinto Case
THE FORD PINTO CASE:
THE VALUATION OF LIFE AS IT APPLIES

Abstract
Text of Paper
Abstract
The cases involving the explosion of Ford Pinto s due to a defective fuel system design led to the
debate of many issues, most centering around the use by Ford of a cost benefit analysis and the ethics
surrounding its decision not to upgrade the fuel system based on this analysis.
ISSUE
Should a risk/benefit analysis be used in situations where a defect in design or manufacturing could
lead to death or seriously bodily harm, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A judgment was rendered against Ford and the jury awarded the Gray family $560,000 and Matthew
Grimshaw $2.5 million in compensatory damages. The surprise came when the jury awarded $125
million in punitive damages as well. This was subsequently reduced to $3.5 million.2
B. The Criminal Case3
Six month following the controversial Grirnshaw verdict, Ford was involved in yet another
controversial case involving the Pinto. The automobile s fuel system design contributed (whether or
not it was the sole cause is arguable) to the death of three women on August 10, 1918 when their car
was hit by another vehicle traveling at a relatively low speed by a man driving with open beer bottles,
marijuana, caffeine pills and capsules of speed. 4 The fact that Ford had chosen earlier not to upgrade
the fuel system design became an issue of public debate as a result of this case. The debate was
heightened because the prosecutor of Elkart County, Indiana chose to prosecute Ford for reckless
homicide and criminal recklessness.
Some felt the issues raised in the Ford Pinto cases were an example of the deep pocket company
disregarding consumer safety in pursuit of the almighty dollar. Others feel they are an example of
runaway media coverage blowing a story out of proportion.5 Regardless of opinion, the Ford Pinto
case is a tangled web of many complex legal and

The Ethical Implications Of The Teaching Design
Once the curricular content is established, I, as the pastor, will offer direct instruction with the
intentions of the learner fully comprehending the implications of the sacrament of baptism in their
own ministry, including the ethical ramifications of bearing witness to God s continuing salvation
through baptism. The ultimate purpose of the teaching design is for the learners to become the
teachers.
Most RCA congregants are paedobaptized and grow up understanding the priority of baptism. An
RCA pastor should establish the historic Reformed understanding of God s covenant. According to
Genesis 17:7, I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you
throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after
you. God made a covenant with Abraham which extended corporately to all of Israel. Israel was
expected to follow God, love others, keep the Law, and proselytize Gentiles to maintain covenantal
status. Although God promised not to break God s covenant, there were still expectations for Israel
and when Israel did not meet these expectations, God punished the nation. Additionally, God s
covenantal call was intended to start with Israel, but branch out to the rest of the world. Jesus comes as
the second Adam to fulfill this expectation and includes both Gentile and Jew into the covenant. All
are now one in Christ according to Galatians 3:27 28. How does baptism play into this covenant?

A Time Of Rapid Industrialization
The period of time between the late 1800s and the early 1900s was a time of rapid industrialization in
the United States. The great American author, Mark Twain, dubbed this period the Gilded Age. Gilded
items are covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint, which hides all that is inside. This idea is evident
in this time period because America s golden paint, or industrialization, was hiding all the economic
and social problems on the inside. Although the Gilded Age brought along great advances in
industrialization, it brought many new problems that were never experienced before. The politics of
this time period came up short when it came to dealing with the economic and social issues it faced.
Many of the economic problems of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Large corporations, like Rockefeller s, also used vertical integration, which is a model in which a
company controlled all aspects of production from raw materials to finished goods (Henretta,
Hindermarker, Edwards, Self, 2014, p. 547). By controlling all steps of the process, these businesses
were able to lower their prices because they could get a cheaper supply of materials. The only con to
vertical integration was that it required a large pool of starting capital to acquire the other businesses,
which perpetuated the cycle of the rich getting richer. James Bryce, author of The American
Commonwealth noted that during the Gilded Age there was a general neglect of details of politics that
had never been seen before , which allowed these large companies to take control over the economy
(Document 1). The government was too relaxed politically, and it was evident in how they handled
their affairs with large corporations. Consequently, the general neglect of political details ended up
lending itself kindly to some corrupt business practices. An example of these corrupt practices was a
trust, which was a small group of associates who hold stock from a group of combined firms and
managed them as a single entity (Henretta, 2014, p.548). These trusts were basically a cartel because
they were established as a loose organization of businesses that would collude and control the market.
The amount of power that large corporations possessed was not good

Pica Human Body
It is essential for the human body to consume the proper amount of nutrients every day. Our bodies
rely on nutrients to live a healthy lifestyle. The human body needs the equivalent amount of fats,
carbohydrates, sodium, proteins, vitamins, and so for. Our body is provided with these dietary
supplements through fruits and vegetables, grains, dairy products, and meats. When these supplements
are not provided to the human body, there will be a decrease of health to one self. Individuals with the
disorder Pica will experience the loss of important nutrients to the body. As stated by (Bay et al.,

Those who live independently have free access to the harmful substances. Those who have no
limitations to these substances will continue to use them and the more they use, the worse their body
will become. It is important for these individuals to have a care taker or someone to watch them
because they can help the individuals eliminate the use of Pica. It is also essential for parents to watch
over their children carefully. Parents should child proof the home and keep all harmful substances out
of reach from the children. Children do not understand the harm they are doing to their bodies by
eating non food substances.
A prognosis for individuals who have Pica can vary by how motivated the individual is to quit. Pica is
a damaging disorder to the mind and body. Individuals should be lectured about the effects of Pica.
Cravings can come and go but those should seek for help when the cravings occur. There are many

Service Learning Reflection
According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service learning is defined as, learning that occurs in
experiences, reflection, and civic engagement (Flecky Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more universities
are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service learning is civic
responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as a citizen. As will
be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a student, but also to
the community members
I personally believe that service learning is a great thing for many reasons. One of the biggest reasons
is that service learning can give you great exposure to having face to face interaction which I think
millennials try to avoid. Another reason that service learning is a great thing is that it can teach some
people about how to be more compassionate as well as helping students understand their civic
responsibilities as young adults. As stated by Flecky Gitlow (2011), a unique aspect of service
learning is that it incorporates structured opportunities for students, faculty and community partners to
reflect on their interactions and activities in light of both educational and community objectives. (p. 1
2). My interpretation of this quote is that the authors view service learning in a positive light. My
understanding is that the authors believe by students reflecting on their interactions with the
community, it can help further their

Professional Wrestling Is Not A Escape For Me

Professional Wrestling
Ever since I was five years old, professional wrestling has always been an escape for me. Growing up,
I didn t have the best childhood in the world, but every Monday and Friday I would turn on Raw and
Smackdown. As I became a teenager I discovered there were other wrestling promotions such as; Ring
of Honor, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Professional wrestling still to this
day is something that I cherish.
In the early 1940s, Jess McMahon began promoting wrestling shows in the northeastern part of the
United States. In 1982, Vincent McMahon took control of, at the time, Capitol Wrestling Corporation.
Vincent transformed a small wrestling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before the Attitude Era, everything was PG and suitable for all ages but around this time, parents
would hate for their children to watch Raw because of the heavy reliance on sex appeal, alcohol, and

H were extremely popular thanks to their not taking crap and kicking some butt. Even though this was
a very controversial time, the fans loved it and it is still know today as the best era in wrestling. The
Attitude Era was such a success for WWE that their competition, WCW and ECW, were put out of
business in 2001. With the success of the promotion over the past decade and a half, WWE still has
remained the biggest professional wrestling promotion in the world.
Even though WWE may be the biggest wrestling promotion in the world, there are other promotions
world wide that has had essentially the same popularity that WWE has. Ring of Honor has been an
independent promotion since 2002, with Ring of Honor celebrating their fifteenth anniversary in
March. The promotion has had several huge names to come out of it, Daniel Bryan, Low Ki, Adam

How African Americans Are Portrayed On The Show Essay
I am a pretty big fan of reality TV because it entertains me. To see the lives of different celebrities, and
to see what they do and go through on a day to day basis, in my opinion, is worth tuning in to once a
week. Sometimes the stuff shown on reality TV be funny, but other times they can be rather
disappointing. TV station, VH1, is home to an abundance of reality television shows, however, very
few of those shows are more popular than the series Love and Hip Hop. Love and Hip Hop has been
going on for several seasons now, which obviously indicates there are many people that consistently
watch the show. The show may be very entertaining to watch, but the problem is how African
Americans are portrayed on the show.
VH1 over the years has taken advantage of people s flaws by televising them and profiting off the
entertainment these flaws provide. They have done it to people of various races, but no group is a
greater victim than blacks. I think it is safe to say that VH1 has aided in the negative image, and
stereotype that has been painted around people within the black community. While VH1 has played a
big part in this, I do not think anyone has played a bigger role on the image, and portrayal of black
people, than black people themselves.
When I watch these shows on VH1, its nearly inevitable to notice vast amount of outrages, and off the
wall things that occur each episode. Throughout the show you are liable to see anything from a man
taking his child to the park to play,

Analysis Of The Film The Golden Girls Essay
Since the age of nine, I ve had a dream of becoming a screenwriter, and a movie producer. Where
others only want to see a show or a movie, I have always wanted to be behind the scenes in the
creation of the art. Being behind the scene and being involved in the creation of the film has always
fascinated me. When I was a in 3rd grade I remember watching the Golden Girls. One Saturday
morning, I turned to Lifetime, and there was an elderly lady who was so short and cute, I just could
not turn the channel. The woman s name was Sophia and she made me laugh from the time I had
started watching the TV show until it had gone off. That day Lifetime was running a marathon of the
Golden Girls; those four ladies made me giggle, and smile. So it was then that I started to wonder
about who is behind the TV shows and movies, because I saw myself being that person. At that time I
did not know about a producer or film maker all that I knew is that I wanted to become a part of tv
shows. The Golden Girls made me want to have my own TV series that was just as funny, and that
would make people laugh just as I had done when I watched it. I began carrying a notebook and a pen
everywhere I would go. I would jot down funny lines, and different ideas for scripts for a movie or a
TV series. I then realized that I wanted to become a screenwriter and a film producer. As a
screenwriter, I want to create TV series that brings joy and comfort to all people, no matter what. My
goal as a screenwriter and

Essay on The War On Drugs
In recent years the so called war on drugs has taken over the streets and back alleys of suburban
America. It has caused a problem that mirrors the prohibition days of the 1920 s and early 30 s.
Politicians trying to play tough guy, are only contributing to more violence. Their laws have created an
underground drug trade, in which modern drug dealers have taken the place of the bootleggers of old.
The real question is whether or not this war is working. Most people would like to believe that it is,
and there are a few statistics that show it has. But just watch any news program, and you will see this
war has failed miserably. Drug related crimes happen constantly in today s society, and in recent years

Doctors in Detroit are saying that they re seeing fewer overdoses, but more drug related shootings,
stabbings, and assaults as dealers fight amongst themselves (Torr39). No real decrease in drug use
among citizens has been seen as a result of police action anyway. Increasing numbers of teens are
turning to a life of drugs in America. Marijuana use among teens has doubled in the last three years ,
while at the same time Americans are spending $20 billion annually on drug related medical costs
(McCaffery4). For this battle to be fought, it must be proven as a cause worth fighting for. Fencing off
the entire country, and jamming non violent offenders in already overcrowded prisons is not a smart
way for this battle to be won. If you look closely it is plain to see that prohibition has not worked in
the past, and will most definitely not work in the future. Should the government really be allowed to
prosecute non violent offenders for consensual crimes committed in their own home? You may have
heard the saying history always repeats itself, does America not remember what the outcome of
alcohol prohibition was. The outlawing of any controlled substance will only bring rise to more
violent outlaws willing to risk life and limb for high profits. By making drugs illegal, they are also
making drug prices skyrocket. As Weir puts it the War on Drugs makes narcotics a hundred times

one of the macroeconomic variables that directly impacts the revenue stream of cable operators. Like
most industries that maintain fleets of vehicle the escalating cost of fuel has an immediate impact on
the bottom line. As a service providers and the owner of the infrastructure one of our largest costs is
related to the installation of our services and hardware. In most cases after a new customer orders
service the company rolls a truck. A truck roll requires that a technician is scheduled to drive to the
customers home, connect their home to our plant, install the ordered product into the customers home,
activate the product and do onsite training of the customer. The escalating cost of fuel directly
increases the cost of truck rolls which depending on installer status (employee or contractor) is on
average a $150.00. In most cases the company does not charge an install fee for this truck roll so the
cost is added to the ROI (Return on Investment) that is calculated for each customer. Interest rates also

The Bad Seed And We Have Always Lived In The Castle Analysis
Relationships in The Bad Seed and We Have Always Lived in the Castle
In the two novels, Children play the role of killing and sense no guilt concerning the breathes they
have taken. In The Bad Seed, Christine preferred murdering herself but not her daughter, Rhoda, and
declined to inform anybody of her murderous acts, with the outcome that Rhoda might now continue
killing any person who gets involved with her and anything she needs. On the other hand, in We Have
Always Lived in the Castle ends with Merricat and Constance once more living a secretive and
isolated existence in what is presently left of a Blackwood house. The child who has devoted many
murders has a family associate who roles as her protector. The two novels We Have Always Lived in
the Castle and The Bad Seed depicts how a family member save and protect the young murderous;
thus it is crucial to explore and understand the relationship between Rhoda and Christine, as well as
that of Constance and Merricat.
In The Bad Seed, Rhoda and Christine Penmark are two major characters with a family relationship in
the play. According to Willam, the author, Rhoda had attained maturity at a quicker rate than other
kids (35). She was capable of manipulating Christine and making convincing explanations and
arguments for her activities. Conversely, Rhoda was as well had feedbacks for everything and very

Conclusion: Cheever s use of literary devices drives the plot of the ideal mid century lifestyle.
Literary Analysis of The Swimmer The Swimmer by John Cheever was published in 1964. The short
story show the reader the emptiness many experienced during the mid century white flight. The
Swimmer gives a view into the life of Ned Merrill, an affluent suburban man s life. Cheever uses
symbolism, imagery, and tone to convey the theme of narcissism and suburban emptiness during the
1960 s. In The Swimmer, Cheever uses symbolism as a tool to portray the theme of the short story.
One symbol the author uses throughout the story is pools. The description of each pool shows the
reader how Ned Merrill changes as a character. At the beginning of the story, the pools represent
Merrill s youthfulness and energy. The first pools Ned encounters represent his life at a high point.
These pools are described as a type of paradise (The Swimmer Symbols). While stopping at the

feelings of charity, indifference, and some unease, since it seemed to be getting dark and these were

Chrysanthemums Essay
Chrysanthemums A good writer has many tools at hand that help them develop good story lines. There
are literary techniques such as voice, point of view, character, theme, and symbolism. One very
interesting technique is that of symbolism. With symbolism the author is able to write a story in which
many of the actions around the main character seem to enhance the way the character develops. The
use of symbolism to develop the characters is easy to see in the short story the chrysanthemums by
John Steinback. In this story Steinback writes of a woman who lives on a farm; but the woman feels
trapped, and wishes that she could free herself. The author uses both the time of year and the location
to develop a setting that compliments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The air was cold and tender. A light wind blew up from the southwest so that the farmers were mildly
hopeful of a good rain before long; but fog and rain do not go together. (Steinback 267) From this line
much may be derived about Elisa Smith s character. The quiet waiting symbolizes how Elisa is silently
waiting for something to happen. Elisa can not say much about her current situation, she has to calmly
weight for something to happen. This can be seen when her husband jokes about her going to the
fights with her. At the time she says nothing, because it would be absurd for her to go with him.
However, after she grows up at the end of the story she expresses her interest to go with him. The
symbol of the possibly of rain shows how Elisa anticipates that something interesting in her life may
happen, but deep down she knows that there is a very low probability that anything would actually
happen. Elisa s bath is another good symbol that Steinback uses to develop Elisa s character. When
she, scrubbed herself with a little block of pumice. . . until her skin was scratched and red. (Steinback
273) she was scrubbing away the skin that bound her into her conventional role. After this bath she
had the courage to ask henry if they could have wine at the dinner tonight, and that they may possibly

Everything Stuck To Him By Raymond Carver Analysis
Everything Stuck to Him , by Raymond Carver, is an enthralling piece of literature that eloquently
depicts a short frame story centered on a nuclear family of three. The frame story progressively shifts
from a woman in Milan asking her father to tell her more about her childhood to another story that the
father narrates about a young boy with a wife and a baby. Carver does an excellent job astutely using a
minimalist style, word choice, and symbolism to enhance and develop his narrative, Everything Stuck
to Him . Compared to the extravagant and enigmatic writing style that a lot of authors prefer, Carver
chooses to employ a minimalist style in Everything Stuck to Him , which means his sentences are
devoid of elaborate details, explanations, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aforementioned, Carver is a minimalist writer, so his diction is rather intelligible on a denotative
level. To go along with his style, Carver leaves out quite a few key components in his diction, forcing
the reader to, once again, make their own interpretations about the frame story. Throughout the story,
Carver never names the characters, which some may think is because of the characters ongoing
struggle to find their identities, while others may interpret this as a concept that makes the story more
relatable since the reader is able to identify more with the character. Carver also uses the words girl
and boy to describe the subjects of his frame story instead of woman and man , which could be his
way of emphasizing the immaturity and inexperience of the young couple. Additionally, Carvers
utilizes diction to casually imply that the girl, or the woman s mother, is no longer around in the
present, while not directly stating this. In his frame story, Everything Stuck to Him , Carver uses
precise word choice to enhance his narrative by leaving out specific details that forces the readers to
draw their own conclusions, adding to the minimalistic aspect of the

Symbols of the Hopi Pottery Essay
Symbols of the Hopi Pottery
When most people look at a piece of pottery the first thing that comes to mind is the significance of
the symbols and the stories behind these symbols. There are some symbols of Hopi pottery that have
stories behind them and some that are symbols of either lost significance or the story is unknown.
Some of the symbols we think of as symbols, are really the potters own design. Most people make the
mistake that symbols and designs are the same thing, but in fact they are very different. Hopi potters,
mostly women, have been instrumental in both preserving and developing traditional symbols and
innovating designs in response to changes in and challenges to their culture.

Once the pot is finished, the potter looks at it and if there is something wrong with it, such as it is lop

If on the other hand, he/she has not decided on a design he/she may take the pot in his/her hands and

The Effectiveness Of Gang Prevention Programs Essay
Review of the Effectiveness of Gang Prevention Programs: Community Crime Prevention Programs
Introduction
Community crime prevention programs incorporate practices that target changes in a community s
culture, physical environment, or infrastructure to reduce crime such as gang involvement and
violence (Citation Needed). This paper will examine the following three different strategies used in
crime prevention programs: focused deterrence strategy, problem solving policing, and situational
crime prevention. Deterrence strategy or theory states that crimes can be prevented when the costs of
committing the crime are perceived by the offender to outweigh the benefits of committing the crime
(Braga et al., 2001). Programs that use the theory of situational crime prevention believe that crime
can be reduced by identifying and then eliminating the forces that facilitate would be offenders
criminal acts (Clarke, 1992). Problem oriented policing is an analytic method used by police to
develop strategies that prevent and reduce crime. Under this method, a law enforcement agency will
systematically analyze the problems of a community, search for effective solutions to the problems,
and evaluate the impact of their efforts (Weisburd et al., 2004).
Literature Review
Problem oriented policing Problem oriented policing is described as a policing strategy that involves
the identification and analysis of specific crime and disorder problems, to develop effective response
strategies.

The South African State Of The Zulu
Writing Assignment 3 Origin of States For this paper, I decided to focus on the South African State of
the Zulu and how it emerged into a state from a small tribe during the Early 1800 s. Shaka Zulu, The
leader of the Zulu and the face of the Zulu as a nation when they came to power, was known to be a
very fierce fighter and strong leader. Born around approximately 1787 as an illegitimate half son to the
current leader of the Zulu, he was exiled from the state and worked his way up as the equivalent of an
officer in an opposing states military. Once Shaka s father died, he used his military expertise along
with the help of his current tribe s leader to take control of the Zulu tribe for himself, since he did have
the blood line of their previous leader. Shaka almost single handedly grew the Zulu from a small south
African Tribe into a state of over 100,000 people with almost half of the total population being in the
active military. Through militaristic and expansionist values, Shaka quickly grew the Zulu from a
small tribe into a large warring state which raided many other South African Tribes for their resources
and wealth, and Shaka also absorbed them into the Zulu tribe whenever possible in order to increase
his power and area of control. Shaka Zulu is widely known as one of Africa s fiercest warriors in
history, and he is famous for how he alone is responsible for the Zulu s rise to power in South Africa. I
chose to write about him and the Zulu as a state because of

The Relationship Between IPV And HIV
A survey of women in Togo s capital, Lome, and found that women infected with human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were more likely to also experience intimate partner violence when

form of injuries resulting from IPV included scratches and bruises, dislocation and sprains, eardrum
ruptures and black eyes, penetration injuries and deep cuts, and bites regardless of HIV status (Burgos
Soto et al., 2014). In addition, women who reported their partner being in concurrent sexual

The U5MR is a good health indicator because it is less susceptible to fallacy than other indicators such
as gross national income per capita because even if families differ in a income by 1000 fold, their
child will not have 1000 fold difference in survival (UNICEF, n.d.). Estimating U5MR through
country wide household surveys (Such as the DHS) revealed the underestimation of child mortality
obtained from census data (UNICEF, n.d.). Thus, the U5MR is a solid indicator of health, and is best
measured through personal surveys.
The United Nations set quantitative sustainable development goals to reduce child mortality by 2030.
The UN proposes ending all preventable deaths of newborns, and achieving a neonatal mortality rate
of at or below 12 per 1000 live births, and an Under five mortality of 25 per 1000 live births (Health
United Nations Sustainable Development, n.d.). For some countries in Sub Saharan Africa, reaching
this goal will require more than halving their current child mortality rate.
Risk Factors for Child Mortality In 99 low and middle income countries surveyed, under five
mortality was twice as high in the poorest households when compared with the wealthiest households,
thus the burden of child death is greater for poorer families (UN IGME, 2017). A study using pooled
DHS data from multiple countries found that variables most highly correlated with under five
mortality at the national level, ranked in descending order, included; income,

KRS-One On Afrocentric Nationalism
Similarly, KRS One also reflected afrocentric nationalism in his music. He was a rapper who was part
of the hip hop group Boogie Down Productions based in New York who continued the group as a solo

afrocentric education by rapping, It seems to me in a school that s ebony/African history should be
pumped up steadily, but it s not (lines 9 10) It is illogical to him that in an all Black school, there isn t
more of a focus on teaching a curriculum that is inclusive of African heritage. He further argues that
by teaching Black children about African American contributions, it can teach them they aren t just a

For example, KRS One, in the music video for You Must Learn, depicted iconic figures, such as
Moses, as Black in order to support his lyrics that discussed the African influence on western
civilization and also encouraged Black children to be proud of their history and heritage. KRS One, in
addition to afrocentric nationalism, also used a lot of Black Power era nationalist imagery in his
music. An example is his album By All Means Necessary, which is a reference to one of Malcolm X s
most famous speeches where he called for the freedom of Black people by any means necessary. The
cover also references Malcolm X by recreating an iconic picture of him holding a machine gun and
peering out the window in order to protect himself from the people that were threatening to kill him.
This can also be seen as a way that Black Power era nationalism and the issues of that era that the type
of nationalism spoke for was used in order to remark on contemporary issues. For example, by
recreating the picture by putting himself in Malcolm X s place, KRS One is implying that there are
outside threats that the Black community has to deal with today, such as gang and drug violence in
urban areas. This is also supported by the various songs on the album that discuss problems like these,
such as Illegal Business, where he argues that drug businesses control America. (Bonnette

Classroom Rules:
1. Be prepared for each class (I promise to show up dressed and ready and expect the same from you.

2. Show respect for all people, their opinions, beliefs, religions, etc. I enjoy a good discussion, but I
will not tolerate rudeness or disrespect for others (a good discussion means that you use Critical
Thinking Skills combined with facts and support while refusing to use flawed logic or name calling).

A solid connection with other students is instrumental in being successful in college. Create study
groups (I learned this late in my schooling, but it is a great idea).
12. Do not complain about the grade that a teacher gave you. Students are no longer given grades;
they earn them (a slight change from kindergarten that a few students struggle with). I grade according
to the syllabus and how effectively students meet the assignment objectives.
13. I do not care what grade you need to make. I do care that you improve as a student (earning a
certain grade is your concern while your being an educated student is mine).
14. If you cheat, you will earn a 0 and not be given a second chance on the assignment (if you are
cheating, I do not want you in a medical, legal, military or any other important career. P.S. there is
such a thing as a permanent record).
15. Only write about what you are passionate (if you do not care about the subject, I can guarantee you
that I will not be). The only caveat to this is being sure that you can objectively distance yourself from
emotional topics to see the flaws in your logic.
16. Communicate with me (I skipped the day where they taught mind reading in school and have
regretted it ever since).
17. Learn to skip excuses and take responsibility for all that occurs (being late for class or missing
assignments consistently means that it is your fault not someone or something else).

The Biology Of Early Life Stages Of Fish Development
Understanding the biology of early life history stages of fish is essential for effective fisheries
management (Mwaluma et al., 2014; Hames Hichford, 2005). For example, knowledge in fish
development such as ontogenetic intervals and embryonic and larval development of fish species is a
prerequisite to set the policies for their conservation and stock enhancement through larviculture
(Rahman et al, 2009; Yanes Roca et al., 2012; Amini et al., 2015; Andrade et al., 2016). Furthermore,
the mechanisms that affect the survival during the early life stages of fish can regulate the future year

Larval stages are followed by a transformation stage during which individuals transform to juveniles,
which morphologically resemble adults (Osse et al., 1997). Anatomical, physiological, and behavioral
changes such as dentition, feeding behavior, and swimming capacity allow various larval stages to
attain new capabilities for biological activities, which in turn enable them to utilize their new
environmental conditions (Moteki, 2002, Moteki et al., 2002; Pena and Dumas, 2009).
Identification of eggs and newly hatched larvae have been proven difficult due to having little or no
resemblance to their adult stages, considerable overlap in the time and location of spawning among
multiple fish species, similarity in morphology of eggs among species, small size, and quick changes
in shapes during larval stage (Victor et al., 2009; Ko et al., 2013; Amini et al., 2015).

The expedition of Hernán Cortés and the conquistadors, one of Spain s later voyages, showed that a
common cause for mass violence and tragedy is found in the human desire for wealth. Cortés main
goal was at first just to develop trade with the Mexican mainland. But when he learned of the rich
Aztec empire and their gold, he began to exploit and conquer them (Bulliet et al. 437). Cortés
accurately portrays the human desire of greed in the following quote taken from the class film
Conquistadors, Do you have more gold? For we re troubled from a disease of the heart that can only
be cured by gold. This was just the beginning of the problem. As soon as the Aztecs had brought the
conquistadors gifts of gold as a symbol of peace, Cortés and his men had already set out to overthrow
the Aztecs. Despite Cortés s initial promise that he came in friendship, Moctezuma quickly found
himself a prisoner in his own palace. His treasury was looted, its gold melted down. Soon a battle was
raging in and about the capital between the Spaniards and the Aztecs (Bulliet et al. 438). The greed
initiated at this period in history has been copied by the terrorists.
Similar to the conquest made by Cortés, the attack on the World Trade Center was also said to have
profited the terrorists. The way in which they accomplished this was by selling their stocks right

Protected by the Declaration of Independence, the American Dream is quoted as, We hold these rights
to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain

founding fathers put into the law the revolutionary idea that each person s desire to pursue happiness
was not just self indulgence by not only stating, but legally protecting these values. By setting these
concepts into stone, the authors of our country s backbone created the American Dream by making it
an accessible right for everyone. At the time, the desired American Dream could only thrive if it was
not blockaded by taxation without representation; additionally, the Declaration specifically states that
a country must be allowed free trade. With these factors combined, the American Dream to the

One of the four corporate social responsibilities that Microsoft has to keep in balance with the others
is maximizing profits for shareholders. Microsoft does this by constantly improving their products,
which in turn raises the price of that stock; a rise in stock price is beneficial to stockholders. Microsoft
improves their products often, they typically come out with a new version of Windows office every
couple years, as is the same with Microsoft Windows operating system. Another way Microsoft keeps
its shareholders happy is by continually paying out more and more money through dividends in
November of every year. While Microsoft treats their shareholders very well in terms of dividend
payments, their generosity doesn t end there. Microsoft has a program where they buy back shares
from their shareholders. Essentially, they are giving their shareholders cash for a piece of the company

All juveniles under the age of 16 could be handled by the court. Between 1960s and the 1980s,
attention and speculation began to rise about the concern of the juvenile delinquency and court
system. During this time, this era was characterized by distinctly harsh punishments for youths. They
were also wanting to focus on providing minors with due process and legal counsel in court. Even
though they were trying to provide help to youth offenders, criticism during this time, focused on
racial discrimination, gender disparities and discrimination towards children with mental health
problems or learning disabilities. Through out the years, crime rates rose and the misrepresentation
from the media began around the 1960s and went through the 1980s. Today in America, no population
poses a larger threat to public safety than juvenile offenders. Juvenile justice system deal with three
types of case; Delinquents, status offenders, neglected, abused or dependent youth. Over the years,
many states have established family courts to deal with offenders and cases with the status of neglect.
Throughout the years, there has always been some type of tension between police and young
offenders. In my personal opinion, I think this comes from the music that the youth listens to. Most
state statues provide some guidance for arrest procedures. As an officer, you have the discretion in
deciding when to arrest juvenile offenders.

Gestational Surrogacy Essay
Gestational surrogacy: the laws and related conflicts in Europe
Introduction
Surrogacy has been known for over thousand years since it was described in the Old Testament of the
Holy Bible. However, we have almost no information about the practice of surrogacy until the end of
the 20th century in the UK. It gained great attention with the Baby Cotton and the Baby M case in
both the UK and the US then. (Horsey Sheldon, 2012) The view during those days was that surrogacy
was a symbol of the suppresion of women by males, because of the use of the woman body just for the
means of reproduction. Today the general opinion towards surrogacy is shifting to a more favorable
view. More and more people see it as a good alternative for reproduction ... Show more content on

The Vatican forbids ART (artificial reproductive techniques) and therefore gestational surrogacy. They
state that conception is a gift, and not a right. Other arguments used are future problems with
developing a personal identity and parental rejection. The same approach applies to the Sunni Islam.
(Inhorn et al., 2010) In this light, it is interesting to see that other religions such as Hinduism,
Buddhism, and Judaism have a more favourable approach towards surrogacy. (Ramskold Posner,
2013) In fact, Israels surrogacy friendly laws are based on the Jewish point on view on the

My Experience, Math, And Literacy Experiences In...
All throughout the summer of 2016, my time was spent volunteering at the Chinese Christian Mission
kid s summer camp. After my summer vacation ended, I found myself genuinely appreciating the
accompaniment of children and wanting to continue my involvement with them. I sought out for more
opportunities to work with children and discovered an after school homework club through a friend s
Facebook post. After reading up on their website, I was interested in helping elementary school
students develop essential math and literacy skills. It was my objective to enhance their self esteem
through improvement in academic skills and ignite a passion for learning in a safe and caring
environment. Starting out first as a tutor, then becoming coordinator, I have volunteered with Learning
Buddies Network for more than a year now.
Being a tutor for two terms, I helped elementary students who struggled with math to learn the
fundamentals. My buddy, Jacob, had struggled with ADHD and math for a majority of his grade
school life. Upon meeting him, it was clear that he had a sense of dread towards math and me, as I was
the one teaching him math. His dislike for math was exhibited when he filled out the first evaluation
test of the term; he had scored his fondness of math a 1 out of 5. Initially, it was difficult to attain his
attention for more than minutes at a time, and he was generally disinterested in the content I was
teaching him. However, as time went on, I got to know Jacob. I discovered his two favourite things in
the world: art and food. My learning curve was steep as I quickly adjusted my teaching style to match
his interests. I motivated him with small snacks at the end of each question set and gave him periodic
breaks. In these breaks I felt that we an invaluable had a bonding moment because we shared the
common interest of art. I was touched to see his joy and admiration when I was able to draw his
favourite Pokemon for him. At the end of the two terms he filled out the evaluation test again, this
time scoring his fondness of math a 3 out of 5. Though it may not seem like a high score for the
average student, it was a vast improvement from his 1 out of 5 and meant a great deal to both him and
I. Experiencing

Movements Throughout History Led by Farmers and the...
The populist movement occurred in the late 19th century, formed from the Grangers movement where
its goal was ta movement for people, to change the economic system where it would benefit farmers.
The grange movement rapidly declined in the 1870s and was replaced by the farmer alliances. The
farmer alliances were more political rather then social. The farmer s alliance later formed the populist.
The populist movement is considered to be an agrarian revolt by farmers and those concerned with
agriculture, because in the gilded age many people were moving to rural areas where banks and
industrial systems were superior over agriculture. The high tariffs, decentralization of currency, and
decreasing crop prices were hurting the farmers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather then just farmers and people who and were concerned with agriculture, the progressive
movement was much more broad and covered the rights for people that weren t getting it in the 20th
century because of the rapid growth of banking and industries. Although both movements was based
on not being satisfied with the government, the populist were part of the Democratic Party while the
progressive was a separated part of the Republican Party and were made up of either party and mostly
of the urban middle class. The progressive movement had all the same initial goals as the populist and
was also a rejection of Social Darwinism. It focused on having economic fairness such as having equal
rights for groups such as woman, African Americans or child labor. The populist ideals lead to the
expanded progressive movement, which becomes more successful and more popular. They aspired for
an advanced income tax in which the 16th amendment was made. Next, the 17th allowed direct
election of the senators from their states. The 18th amendment was passed which prohibited alcohol.
The 19th amendment then later allowed didn t allow discrimination based on sex when voting, which
gave woman a chance to finally vote. Amendments 16 19 are known as the progressive amendments.
The government also accepted other populist goals such as regulation of banks and industries, reforms
in the civil services, a short 8 hour day for labor class. All these goals

Burning Down The House By Neil Bernstein Burning Down the House Review America s answer for dealing with crime prevention is locking up adult offenders in correctional facilities with little rehabilitation for reentry into society. American response for crime prevention for juvenile s offenders is the same strategy used against adult offenders taken juvenile offenders miles away from their environment and placed in adult like prisons. An RCA pastor should establish the historic Reformed understanding of God s covenant. According to Genesis 17:7, I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. God made a covenant with Abraham which extended corporately to all of Israel. Israel was expected to follow God, love others, keep the Law, and proselytize Gentiles to maintain covenantal status. Although God promised not to break God s covenant, there were still expectations for Israel and when Israel did not meet these expectations, God punished the nation. Additionally, God s covenantal call was intended to start with Israel, but branch out to the rest of the world. Jesus comes as the second Adam to fulfill this expectation and includes both Gentile and Jew into the covenant. All are now one in Christ according to Galatians 3:27 28. The great American author, Mark Twain, dubbed this period the Gilded Age. Gilded items are covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint, which hides all that is inside. This idea is evident in this time period because America s golden paint, or industrialization, was hiding all the economic and social problems on the inside. The only con to vertical integration was that it required a large pool of starting capital to acquire the other businesses, which perpetuated the cycle of the rich getting richer. James Bryce, author of The American Commonwealth noted that during the Gilded Age there was a general neglect of details of politics that had never been seen before , which allowed these large companies to take control over the economy (Document 1). The government was too relaxed politically, and it was evident in how they handled their affairs with large corporations. Consequently, the general neglect of political details ended up lending itself kindly to some corrupt business practices. An example of these corrupt practices was a trust, which was a small group of associates who hold stock from a group of combined firms and managed them as a single entity (Henretta, 2014, p.548). Service Learning Reflection According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service learning is defined as, learning that occurs in experiences, reflection, and civic engagement (Flecky Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more universities are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service learning is civic responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as a citizen. As will be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a student, but also to the community members I personally believe that service learning is a great thing for many reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that service learning can give you great exposure to having face to face interaction which I think millennials try to avoid. Another reason that service learning is a great thing is that it can teach some people about how to be more compassionate as well as helping students understand their civic responsibilities as young adults. As stated by Flecky Gitlow (2011), a unique aspect of service learning is that it incorporates structured opportunities for students, faculty and community partners to reflect on their interactions and activities in light of both educational and community objectives. The use of symbolism to develop the characters is easy to see in the short story the chrysanthemums by John Steinback. At the time she says nothing, because it would be absurd for her to go with him. However, after she grows up at the end of the story she expresses her interest to go with him. The symbol of the possibly of rain shows how Elisa anticipates that something interesting in her life may happen, but deep down she knows that there is a very low probability that anything would actually happen. This paper will examine the following three different strategies used in crime prevention programs: focused deterrence strategy, problem solving policing, and situational crime prevention. Deterrence strategy or theory states that crimes can be prevented when the costs of committing the crime are perceived by the offender to outweigh the benefits of committing the crime (Braga et al., 2001). Programs that use the theory of situational crime prevention believe that crime can be reduced by identifying and then eliminating the forces that facilitate would be offenders criminal acts (Clarke, 1992). The South African State Of The Zulu Writing Assignment 3 Origin of States For this paper, I decided to focus on the South African State of the Zulu and how it emerged into a state from a small tribe during the Early 1800 s. Shaka Zulu, The leader of the Zulu and the face of the Zulu as a nation when they came to power, was known to be a very fierce fighter and strong leader. Born around approximately 1787 as an illegitimate half son to the current leader of the Zulu, he was exiled from the state and worked his way up as the equivalent of an officer in an opposing states military. Once Shaka s father died, he used his military expertise along with the help of his current tribe s leader to take control of the Zulu tribe for himself, since he did have the blood line of their previous leader. Shaka almost single handedly grew the Zulu from a small south African Tribe into a state of over 100,000 people with almost half of the total population being in the active military. Through militaristic and expansionist values, Shaka quickly grew the Zulu from a small tribe into a large warring state which raided many other South African Tribes for their resources and wealth, and Shaka also absorbed them into the Zulu tribe whenever possible in order to increase his power and area of control. Shaka Zulu is widely known as one of Africa s fiercest warriors in history, and he is famous for how he alone is responsible for the Zulu s rise to power in South Africa. I chose to write about him and the Zulu as a state because of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The U5MR is a good health indicator because it is less susceptible to fallacy than other indicators such as gross national income per capita because even if families differ in a income by 1000 fold, their child will not have 1000 fold difference in survival (UNICEF, n.d.). Estimating U5MR through country wide household surveys (Such as the DHS) revealed the underestimation of child mortality obtained from census data (UNICEF, n.d.). Thus, the U5MR is a solid indicator of health, and is best measured through personal surveys. The United Nations set quantitative sustainable development goals to reduce child mortality by 2030. The UN proposes ending all preventable deaths of newborns, and achieving a neonatal mortality rate of at or below 12 per 1000 live births, and an Under five mortality of 25 per 1000 live births (Health United Nations Sustainable Development, n.d.). For some countries in Sub Saharan Africa, reaching this goal will require more than halving their current child mortality rate. Risk Factors for Child Mortality In 99 low and middle income countries surveyed, under five mortality was twice as high in the poorest households when compared with the wealthiest households, thus the burden of child death is greater for poorer families (UN IGME, 2017). An example is his album By All Means Necessary, which is a reference to one of Malcolm X s most famous speeches where he called for the freedom of Black people by any means necessary. The cover also references Malcolm X by recreating an iconic picture of him holding a machine gun and peering out the window in order to protect himself from the people that were threatening to kill him. Cortés accurately portrays the human desire of greed in the following quote taken from the class film Conquistadors, Do you have more gold? As soon as the Aztecs had brought the conquistadors gifts of gold as a symbol of peace, Cortés and his men had already set out to overthrow the Aztecs. • 43. Gestational Surrogacy Essay Gestational surrogacy: the laws and related conflicts in Europe Introduction Surrogacy has been known for over thousand years since it was described in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. However, we have almost no information about the practice of surrogacy until the end of the 20th century in the UK. It gained great attention with the Baby Cotton and the Baby M case in both the UK and the US then. (Horsey Sheldon, 2012) The view during those days was that surrogacy was a symbol of the suppresion of women by males, because of the use of the woman body just for the means of reproduction. Today the general opinion towards surrogacy is shifting to a more favorable view. More and more people see it as a good alternative for reproduction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 44. My Experience, Math, And Literacy Experiences In... All throughout the summer of 2016, my time was spent volunteering at the Chinese Christian Mission kid s summer camp. After my summer vacation ended, I found myself genuinely appreciating the accompaniment of children and wanting to continue my involvement with them. I sought out for more opportunities to work with children and discovered an after school homework club through a friend s Facebook post. After reading up on their website, I was interested in helping elementary school students develop essential math and literacy skills. It was my objective to enhance their self esteem through improvement in academic skills and ignite a passion for learning in a safe and caring environment. Starting out first as a tutor, then becoming coordinator, I have volunteered with Learning Buddies Network for more than a year now. Being a tutor for two terms, I helped elementary students who struggled with math to learn the fundamentals. My buddy, Jacob, had struggled with ADHD and math for a majority of his grade school life. Upon meeting him, it was clear that he had a sense of dread towards math and me, as I was the one teaching him math. His dislike for math was exhibited when he filled out the first evaluation test of the term; he had scored his fondness of math a 1 out of 5. Initially, it was difficult to attain his attention for more than minutes at a time, and he was generally disinterested in the content I was teaching him. However, as time went on, I got to know Jacob. I discovered his two favourite things in the world: art and food. My learning curve was steep as I quickly adjusted my teaching style to match his interests. I motivated him with small snacks at the end of each question set and gave him periodic breaks. In these breaks I felt that we an invaluable had a bonding moment because we shared the common interest of art. I was touched to see his joy and admiration when I was able to draw his favourite Pokemon for him. At the end of the two terms he filled out the evaluation test again, this time scoring his fondness of math a 3 out of 5. Though it may not seem like a high score for the average student, it was a vast improvement from his 1 out of 5 and meant a great deal to both him and I. Experiencing ... The grange movement rapidly declined in the 1870s and was replaced by the farmer alliances. The farmer alliances were more political rather then social. The farmer s alliance later formed the populist. Rather then just farmers and people who and were concerned with agriculture, the progressive movement was much more broad and covered the rights for people that weren t getting it in the 20th century because of the rapid growth of banking and industries. The progressive movement had all the same initial goals as the populist and was also a rejection of Social Darwinism. It focused on having economic fairness such as having equal rights for groups such as woman, African Americans or child labor.
