2. Henry David Thoreau And Ralph Waldo Emerson
Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, a group of transcendentalists who brought great
ideals with them through the mid 1800 s. Their philosophy stated that people needed to stay true to
themselves and their own ideas, not those of society. One essay where Thoreau thoroughly exemplifies
this is in Civil Disobedience. Throughout this essay, Thoreau tries to show his point that even though
the government consists of more people, it will not always be correct. This means that the majority
does not always equal the better option and that if people go with what they think, then they will be
right. He asserts that anyone can constitute the majority of one and be the one person who draws
attention to an issue.
The NFL, the National Football League, where stars can shine doing what they love for millions of
fans, and where the NFL can create rules and policies every year to try and limit the freedom and take
control of it s players. It creates rules about what the players can and cannot wear, what they can do on
and off the field, and even when and where they have to speak. The more constraints the NFL puts on
the players, the more likely they will be to break them. In the past few years there have been more
movements against the NFL to try and earn some of the players rights back. Just as Thoreau presents
his and Emerson s ideas in Civil Disobedience, the players in the NFL still emulate their ideas by
being the majority of one (Thoreau).

Most agreements permit airlines to fly from their home country to designated airports in the other
country: some also extend the freedom to provide continuing service to a third country, or to another
destination in the other country while carrying passengers from overseas. In the 1990s, open skies
agreements became more common. These agreements take many of these regulatory powers from state
governments and open up international routes to further competition. Open skies agreements have met
some criticism, particularly within the European Union, whose airlines would be at a comparative
disadvantage with the United States because of cabotage restrictions.

6. The Epidemic Of Bovine Tuberculosis
1.0 Introduction
Bovine Tuberculosis is a notified disease caused by mycobacterium bovis, in which all organisms are
susceptible, including humans and cattle (Boden, E, 2005). Between January and June 2014, the
number of herds now officially not Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) free has come to 6,312 with the
number of cattle being slaughtered reaching 17,063. The impact of a herd breakdown due to bTB is
devastating, costing the farmers £14,000 and the government £20,000 (DEFRA, October 2014). It is
important to prevent TB due to its high pathogenicity, so a number of control strategies are in place
nationally and internationally with the intent to eradicate TB in Great Britain and other countries.
2.0 Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis is spread by inhalation or ingestion of the bacteria, either directly through infected milk,
the placenta or ingesting contaminated food and water, or indirectly through environmental conditions
such as being where infected badgers have been (DARDNI, 2013). Bovine TB can take months or
even years to start showing signs which is why it is important to test cattle regularly. This is done with
the Single Intradermal Comparative Cervical Tuberculin test (SICCT). Both the bovine and avian
form of tuberculosis is injected side by side into the neck. After 72 hours, the site is re checked for a
reaction. A bovine TB infected cow will show more swelling on the bovine tuberculin site than on the
avian tuberculin site, thus proving that the cow is a reactor for bovine

system leading to chaos, wars, and confusion. One period is especially important in order to realize

the mother was a stay at home mom. Because of the concept of the American Dream both Tennessee
Williams and Edward Albee s plays criticize the American ideals about relationships and family life.
A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams criticizes the American way of life. The story is
about Blanche who flies her hometown in Laurel, Mississippi to go and live with her sister in New

The main theme of the story in the mission is about a group of Jesuits who established a mission
station around the borderland of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil around 1750. Meanwhile, they
converted the local Indians to Christianity. At the end, Cardinal Altamirano ordered Jesuits to leave the
mission. Without the protection of the church, the local Indians were killed or slaved by Portuguese.
The script of the movie was written from a real historic event in 1754 1756, the Guarani War, which
Guarani communities defend their homeland against Spanish Portuguese for almost three years. The
fuse of the war was ignited by the Treaty of Madrid in 1750, which was signed by the king of Spain

area around Uruguay river. Around that time, the Jesuit mission stations and the local Indians were
growing rapidly both economically and regionally with their outstanding plantations, which was much
better than those in Portugal s own territory. As a consequence, the Portuguese wanted to take over
control the land and slave the Indians. They forced the Catholic church to dissemble their mission
station and did the massacre right after they leaved. The paradigm that director used was carefully
selected. The story of the movie was told from a vision of Cardinal Altamirano, who was writing a

Brigadier John Clayton headed by Humvee to Colonel Lambert s Command Post, located a mile north
west of the capital. There was no way John was heading into Indian Country without some help; he
felt he could count on Colonel Lambert of the 3rd Infantry Regiment for help. It was a thirty minute
drive from the White House to the CP, Colonel Lambert had no idea that the General was coming, so
when he pulled up and entered the CP, he was surprised to see him. The two men over the past several
weeks had become friends, mutual respect for their military accomplishments and how they perceived
the country. General Clayton entered the CP; a loud ATTEN hut! was heard. Everyone in the CP
jumped to attention, John quickly called out, As you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

looked at the General, Alright, what can I do for you? I m sure you re not visiting to check on my

Fredericks. I need help. I m sorry John, but we don t have a therapist here. Funny Johnny, you know

the Marines with you? I hadn t considered that, but I don t know that I have the authority to order the

Humor. Mockery. Relationship Goals. Can you consider these three things in a story about slavery?
Slavery is typically a sensitive and serious topic. In Charles W. Chesnutt s short story, The Passing of
Grandison and Quentin Tarantino s film, Django Unchained , these three components were combined
for entertainment purposes. In this essay, I will implement the comparison that both the short story and
film shows with the three component of humor, mockery and the relationship goal of a slave. The
Passing of Grandison was humorous in many ways. The humor started the Colonel s son, Dick Owens,
trying to win a girl s heart by doing something kind by freeing a slave by taking him to Canada.
Chesnutt used humor by exposing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this story, Chesnutt changes the reader s initial perception of the characters, which was humorous.
Such as, even though Charity somewhat persuades Dick Owens to proceed in losing his father s slave,
she never believe that he would actually succeed. Dick returns home, and Charity Lomax hilariously
marries him, as she was mildly impressed her with his act. In the movie, Django Unchained, Taratino
humor comes in condemning the importance of slavery, which he makes fun of events and groups of
people that existed during the time of slavery. In the movie, there is a white German bounty hunter
named Dr. Schultz seeks out a slave named Django and buys him because he needed him to find some
men he is looking for. What so hilarious about this was that Dr. Schultz could have used anybody
beside a slave that was on the same plantation with the men that Django might have known, he was
not even certain that Django knew of these men he was looking for. Also, in the movie, Taratino made
the scene with Django changing wardrobe to be a hilarious part of the movie. You can say that Django
went from rags to riches, after Django s freedom Dr. Schultz offers to buy him a new suit whatever he
wanted. Django selects a blue two piece with lace cravat and knickerbockers, he assumes that s what
gentlemen (a free slave) would wear, It was funny seeing Django walk in his new wardrobe because

25. Positive And Negative Effects Of Colonialism In Africa
Africa, although it is the mother of all the continents and is the origin of humankind, is considered the
most misunderstood continent that has gone through centuries of strife and exploitation from other
countries all over the world. Since the beginning of slavery in Africa in the medieval times, many
changes in Africa have occurred in a social and economic standpoint in relations to other countries and
within the native land itself by causing colonialism, which is the process of taking control of another
area politically while also using their land. Colonialism has had a negative effect on Africa both
socially, politically, and economically and can be fixed with the help of other countries. Africa in and
of itself was the mighty continent before slavery and colonialism. Africa serves as the Mater
Hominum and the Mater Continentium, or the creator of the first humans and the mother continent. It
is regarded in the book African Foreign Policy and Diplomacy from Antiquity to the 21st Century,
written by Dr. Daniel Don Nanjira, that Africa is the first cradle of the humankind, which makes it the
only continent in the world to have the whole human species inhabit the area for at least 5 million
years running (Nanjira 7). Therefore, Africa is revered as the first continent in existence for the world
and is the oldest place of human life which in turn illustrates the value and true importance of the land
and people that have for so long been disregarded and corrupted. Before the use of slavery and
colonialism, African had flourishing and prosperous civilizations that been first established in the Nile
River valley like the Kingdoms of Kerma in the ancient region of Nubia. There are also many other
empires that have been known all over Africa such as the Aksumite, Mali, and Luba empires. These
Kingdom s once prospered before or during slavery and colonialism and had their own cultures and
significant contributions to civilization. The Kingdom of Kerma was established in the northern part
of Sudan in 2500 BC and ended in 1500 BC after the Egyptian invasion of the country after they had
already invaded neighboring lands and allianced states or cities. It is one of the many Kingdoms found

26. An Analysis Of Martin Luther King s I Have A Dream
Every human in this world is promised to something from love to a better country.
Promises are to be true to happen, but sometimes those promises are broken and never to happen. An
example of a promise that did come true was to make racial justice. This promised was made by
Martin Luther King Jr. s in his speech, I Have a Dream. In his speech, he promised to make racial
justice for the reason that there was no freedom of racism. An example of a promised that did not
come true was the promised made by a leader of a socialist group, Jim Jones. People joined a socialist
group called People s Temple, who were promised by Jones to move to Jonestown a place that he

have done is feed them good. To add on, Peoples Temple did not have the liberty to take a nice shower
after a long day of sweating from work. Layton explains Jim Jones rules towards showering, Planning
one s shower was important because showers also had restrictions. Anyone reported to have allowed
the water to run longer than two minutes was assigned to the Learning Crew for a day (Layton 184).
To continue, People from Jonestown did not have the liberty to live with their own family, Our cabins,
tin roofed and small, could have housed families, lovers, children, with their parents, but instead we
were partitioned into nonbonding arrangements (Layton 186). The reason for not having a close
relationship with your own family was not allowed because it was a sin to Jones. Layton explains her
relationship that she needed to have with her own mother when they were in Jonestown, There was a
fine line between too little and too much empathy. Too much compassion meant you d break under
torture and questioning by the enemy. Too little proved you could become a turncoat and traitor to
Father (Layton 187). However, Martin Luther King Jr. wanted people to live with liberty and have
citizenship rights. As he recalls the rights that every human being has in America, This [promissory]

201510394 Dr. Kleinecke Bates Is Television History? April 5, 2016 Media Events: British vs.
American Television has held a common place in the households of western civilizations for well over
50 years now, but historically speaking, it s only been recently that people have really begun to study
television. Such studies have really started to be taken seriously and the audiences of television are
also being compared and seen in different ways than they were in the past. Some of the studies
concentrate more on how television affects memory, others look specifically at types of televisions
and the genres they have created, and one of the most discussed ideas in television and its specific
genre is, the media event. Media events ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A media event is made up of several different components, and those components are very important
so that one can tell the difference between it and a news event. A media event, by definition, is
something that interrupts daily life, it is an event that was preplanned and the media was invited,
meaning the event would still be held even if the media was not there. It is an event that can restore
order and bring normalcy back to life as opposed to a news event which usually brings disruption to
life. A pair of researchers, Daniel Dayan, and Elihu Katz have done extensive research on the subject
of media events. They wrote a paper in which they discuss in detail what a Media event really is.
According to them, there are three categories that a media event could fall into. The categories are
Contests, Conquests, and Coronations the three C s. Each category has its own regulations, and an
event must meet these in order to fit into the category. A contest is simple, it is as it sounds, a contest
or competition of some form, a sporting event such as football, the Olympic games, races and many
other such types of events. Conquests are not as simple. An excellent example of a conquest is when
man landed on the moon for the first time, it is when a large momentous event happens, perhaps even
something so momentous that it can change the world. A coronation can be a

28. The Importance Of Integrity For A Business Means Being A...
Entrepreneurial Opportunities One of the defining characteristics of an entrepreneur is integrity.
Integrity plays into how others perceive you. Companies or individuals that display organic integrity
attract respect and consumer loyalty (Forbat, pg 23, 2007). Integrity for a business means being a good
corporate citizen. A company with good corporate citizenship has a strong set of ethics and is socially
conscious. Corporate citizenship needs to be ingrained in modern craft breweries at their inception so
their actions seem meaningful and organic as consumers tend to be suspicious of corporate agendas.
Because more and more consumers are expecting high levels of integrity, corporate citizenship
presents itself as a great entrepreneurial opportunity within the craft beer market. Being socially
conscious does not necessarily translate to better sales but it is definitely in the company s best interest
to keep an ethically sound public appearance. Consumers are quick to abandon socially corrupt
companies and are hard to win back once the company s reputation is soiled. Mitigating bad public
perception can be done by ensuring company ethics and social responsibility are met. This does
consume resources and is considered a cost to the company but it is becoming increasingly necessary
due to the wide spread access of information consumers have readily available. It is possible that if
marketed heavily to ensure consumers are aware of a company s good deeds that being a good

opportunities with the hopes and dreams of a better life for themselves or their families. In Hester

as a new beginning for their aging hamlet. All these pressures, unfortunately, make the young man
impotent. It is interesting that the movie is full of images and situations in which Chinese and
American cultures confront one another. For instance, during the arranged courtship in China, the
couple s first moment alone on screen is against the backdrop of an open air projection of an American
film. When the couple is on vacation in Washington to try and escape the pressures of community and
finally make love, the familiar American landmarks are overlaid with Chinese music. The very real

over identity; Ben Loy s impotence, his failure to continue the line is a sign of his inability to unite
Chinese and American, public expectation and private desires.

31. A Known Scribbler Frances Burney Analysis
When reading A Known Scribbler: Frances Burney On Literary Life, Burney could be confused as a
fictional character. For people who are familiar with the epistolary form, the collection of Burney s
letters presents an odd feeling of dissociation where it is possible to temporarily forget Burney is real.
A contrast to Evelina whose letters are meant to emphasize the protagonist s authenticity. Yet, this
effect proves letters provide a dual function. On one hand, the reader expects the letter to contain the
private thoughts of the writer. On the other, there is the acknowledgement that the writer will
inevitably alter events to their perspective. Morever, Burney s lack of change in her writing suggests
life writing and fiction are similar. Because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clearly, Burney presents the merging of the two forms and reduces it to a simplification. The identity
of a literary work, whether real or not, is impossible to define. Because if Burney s letters could be
seen as a work of fiction or if Evelina is categorized as life writing, there would be few arguments.
Understandably, people would argue Burney s letters is life writing because Burney was a real person.
However, to the less knowledgeable reader, they might not realize it. If they were told A Known
Scribbler: Frances Burney On Literary Life is an epistolary novel without knowing she existed, there
is no way the reader could state the difference between this and Evelina. Or, if someone argued
Evelina is fictitious because there is no records of her anywhere, by categorizing Evelina as an
autobiography is enough authority to make her authentic. Therefore, because there is no other
distinguishing characteristic besides choice, the very identities of life writing and fiction are
compromised. Because the genres could blend with each other, it becomes difficult to confidently
determine whether a literary work is based on the real or created from the mind. So long as the focus
of the story is on a person in a realistic setting, the categorization of it is left to

32. Act Utilitarianism And Rule Utilitarianism
1. Utilitarians believe that one should so act as to promote the greatest happiness (pleasure) of the
greatest number of people (Angeles 326). However, within the utilitarian community there are major
splits in how we are to determine which action brings us the greatest amounts of pleasure. Today I will
be focusing on two ways to determine which actions bring the greatest amount of pleasure to a
situation: act and rule utilitarianism. I will define both act and rule utilitarianism, give a situation
where both can be applied, and respond to an objection of utilitarianism. I will also be discussing why
I believe act utilitarianism helps more people than rule utilitarianism, in turn, becoming superior to
rule utilitarianism.
2. To begin, I will be defining both act and rule utilitarianism. In act utilitarianism, you determine the
morality of an act by measuring the pleasures and pains for a specific situation Angeles 326). Act
utilitarians take into consideration only those affected in the specific situation. However, rule
utilitarianism determines the morality of an act according to the good or bad consequences that ensue
from following a general moral rule of conduct... (Angeles 326). Good examples of those general
moral rules are phrases like, never steal or never tell a lie. In any situation, people can use either act or
rule utilitarianism to determine the correct course of action.

Currently there are several definitions of asymmetric threats listed throughout the internet as well as
other literature. The definition that best sums up the meaning in my view is leveraging unconventional
tactics against a superior opponent with the goal of disrupting the willingness to achieve the
operational objectives. The most common and current example of this would be the insurgency tactics
used in Iraq and Afghanistan. The United States must not assume those tactics and strategies will only
be used abroad. The same asymmetric threats our country s security initiative is facing are the same
challenges are seaports are facing. Some examples of the potential asymmetric threats the United

The impact of a chemical environment would also lessen the dominance of a United States military
operation. The United States military is commonly known to operate both deployment and re
deployment operations at specific ports of embarkation and debarkation; making targeting for a
chemical attack fairly simple.
Like chemical weapons, biological weapons are easy to obtain, but the area covered by such an attack
is fairly small and limited. The most effective area to use a chemical weapon on a seaport would be
the operation center of that port due to the limited damage it will cause to the infrastructure. The
psychological effect of VX or Sarin would devastate any port operation and to trace the origin of the
agents would prove to be very difficult.
The most common vulnerabilities to seaports exist due to the geographical location and the amount of
activity surrounding most seaports. Highways, railways, and joining waterways create many security
issues and make larger seaports terrorist strategic targets. The sheer size of the sea requires numerous
resources and assets from agencies such as the United States Coast Guard. The task of monitoring and

performance must be high in order to counterbalance the decrease in calorie intake. Females who

Low bone mineral density can result in stress fractures within a female s body (6). Female athletes
with menstrual dysfunction often display low levels of the reproductive hormones estrogen and
progesterone. When the levels of these hormones are low, it is difficult for bones to retain calcium
which causes a gradual loss of bone mass. It has been proven that when comparing amenorrhic
athletes to athletes with regular menstrual cycles, the bone mineral density if reduced by 14% in

35. Similarities Between 12 Angry Men And Twelve Angry Men
Justice is doing for others, what we would want done for ourselves. Both the play Twelve Angry Men
by playwright Reginald Rose and the film On the Waterfront by director Elia Kazan explore justice.
Rose and Kazan use a variety of characters and their challenges, as well as a range of different literary
features to build their knowledge of justice shown throughout both texts. Firstly, both authors Rose
and Kazan explore the use of their protagonists using justice to overcome the fears to stand up for
themselves. Secondly we are shown justice from both antagonists in each text as neither of them are
set up to not accept the truth to try and achieve justice. Lastly, Rose and Kazan show through the use
of the setting how justice is used in more depth. Each text ultimately explores a variety of different
ways of showing justice
Throughout Twelve Angry Men and On the Waterfront both Protagonists show how they serve justice
to prove their opinions and win over what they believe is right. Both protagonists show that they want
to do what is right and stick with what they believe, which is testifying against Johnny friendly in On
the Waterfront and Juror 8 voting against everyone and voting not guilty in Twelve Angry Men . Juror
8 voting not guilty is a testament to his courage of conscience It s not easy for me to raise my hand
and send a boy off to die without talking about it first along the entire storyline of the text Juror 8 does
not back down and sticks up for his opinion until every other juror agrees. Similarly, Terry who is the
protagonist in On the Waterfront is given the confidence to stand up against antagonists Johnny
Friendly, after being convinced that testifying and telling the truth is more important than just seeking
physical revenge. After testifying he displays courage by facing the workers and Friendly at the
Waterfront to reveal that he isn t ashamed and that you can come back. By the end of both texts we are
shown how each protagonist fights for their justice by standing up for their rights and doing what they
want done for themselves.

INTRODUCTION Some people suffer severe motor impairments cannot express their thoughts as

40. Los Vendidos, Produced by Luis Valdez Essay
For centuries, the Mexican American experience has been one of adversity and endurance. The plight
of these native peoples has been ignored and many times erased from the American conscience. They
have struggled for acknowledgment, they have fought for equality and they have gone to battle for
respect. Luis Valdez s play, Los Vendidos, is just one of many contributions to this effort. A powerfully
moving play, Los Vendidos, or the sell outs , is a piece created to gain acknowledgement, heighten
awareness and to create a sense of camaraderie amongst the people fighting in the Chicano Movement
of the late 1960 s and 70 s. Created by a population that had been victimized, beaten and driven to the
ground by the powerful grip of American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is a secretary working for the governor s office that maintains a proper yet pompous American
accent, and her hair is dyed a shade of platinum blond. She personifies the American aspiration to de
Mexicanize the Mexican Americans. As she shops for a suitable used Mexican model the civic
indifference and racism that the Mexican Americans have been forced to combat becomes
progressively more apparent.
Women, who have always accounted for half of the population, have not historically been recognized
or respected for their contributions to society. In the past, all women have had to struggle against a
chauvinistic world, but for minority women the fight has been even harder. For Mexican America
women they have had two strikes against them in the eyes of America, not only were they Mexican
and therefore prone to what those stereotypes entailed, but they were also women and therefore not
deserving of any power or respect. Los Vendidos presents and portrays women in a very curious way.
In the play, with the only exceptions being Ms. Jimenez and the mother, who only has one line, none
of the female models speak Furthermore, both Ms. Jimenez and Senor Sancho deliberately ignore all
of them. For example, as the play begins and camera pans the store, a Soldadera woman can be
noticed, she is dressed southwestern attire, including a cowboy hat and ammunition belts. Other then
for those few brief seconds this woman is not seen again at any

42. Personality Questionnaire On Personality
The questionnaire method is the most common approach used to calculate an individual s personality.
While this method is used throughout the world in different organisations, is it all it is cracked out to
be or is it just a waste of time and resources, I will be discussing the advantages and disadvantages of
questionnaires in the workplace. I will also be discussing my personal experiences with completing
two questionnaires, comparing the results and if I believe they match my managerial or leadership
style.
The questionnaire which best describes what I believe to be my managerial or leadership style would
have to be the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. The reason why I believe that this questionnaire
best describes my managerial or leadership style is because the scoring interpretation describes seven
factors of managerial or leadership style and indicates which factors are higher than others, also giving
a brief description of the style. My results showed that my individualized consideration was high.
Revealing the extent to which I show interest regarding others prosperity, delegate tasks to suitable
candidates and to make sure everyone feels involved. Also, my result for laissez faire was high,
meaning I would let things take their own course of action without interfering. My other results from
the questionnaire showed that my idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual
stimulation, contingent reward and management by exception were moderate.

43. Comparing The Flea and Valentine Essay
Comparing The Flea and Valentine
The flea is a metaphysical poem about a man trying to argue a virgin into bed to have sexual
intercourse with him. This poem was most likely written to amuse the readers and probably more for a
larger male audience. The poem was written in the late 17th century in a period where sex within
marriage was like a household chore, but socially, sex before marriage was like a sin, because society
was extremely religious. John Donne is attempting to get these thoughts out of her head and persuade
her to have sex with him.
Metaphysical poets use a lot of elaborate and extended comparisons.
They wrote energetic and vigorous poems that went against the common literature of the time.

The poet points out that losing her virginity is not a sin.
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead
He tries to reverse her views that both society and herself share. He is very persuasive in this poem
and uses the flea many times as a symbol of their sexual union and uses many metaphors. He uses
many sly phrases also which could easily win his argument and I feel it is making her feel guilty and
starting to make her confused and think about the prospects of them having sex.
I think that during the end of the first stanza the poet starts to become quite theatrical.
Yet this enjoys it before it woo, And pamper d swells in one blood made of two; And this, alas! Is
more than we would do.
This could be referring to sex. The flea enjoys the blood and so does the man enjoy foreplay. The
pamper d swells could be that of sexual organs before sex and yet, because that is not happening, the
flea is having a better time at the moment than he is, by sucking their blood.
I think that by using this comparison, John Donne is being very intellectual and at this point I feel he
may win his argument.
The second stanza, John Donne becomes weaker as the girl starts to defend herself and he tries to
convey his love for her.
John Donne, in this stanza I feel becomes more intimate and uses alliteration and much more poetic
techniques. At the beginning of the second stanza, I would assume that the girl has got up and left him.

Afghanistan for years now has turned into be the talk of the century. In that nation there has been a

theory that suggests defeating a terror group with force, and using economic incentives to turn the

46. Hypothyroidism Essay
Hypothyroidism is an affliction that results from the disruption of the effectiveness of the thyroid
gland and its hormone secretion. According to Cabello and Wrutnia (1989), the thyroid is key in
affecting growth hormone (GH), and in turn, body growth as a whole. As a part of the endocrine
system, the thyroid gland is responsive to the pituitary gland through the delivery of thyroid
stimulating hormone (TSH), and the pituitary gland is responsive to the hypothalamus s messenger,
thyroid regulating hormone (TRH). When cells called thyroid gland follicles are underactive, both
growth and overall development can be affected. Additionally, removal of the pituitary has been a
method employed by endocrinologists to induce hypothyroidism. A clinical case described by Nussey
and Whitehead (2001) revealed symptoms often associated with hypothyroidism, including a
disruption of mental processes, gut motility, metabolic rate and the skeleton . ... Show more content on

T4 is made into its active form, triidothyronine (T3) when acted upon by an iodine removing enzyme,
5 deiodinase. Other studies have also shown that a lack of iodine can lead to hypothyroidism (Nussey
and Whitehead, 2001). Indeed, as reported by Zimmerman (2009), it has been shown that low iodine
levels are linked to transient newborn hypothyroidism, which can impede growth dramatically. Still,
other researchers have shown that propylthiouracil (PTU) prevents the transformation of T4 into
active T3 (Geffner et al, 1975), disrupting its permissive effects. Clearly, hypothyroidism can be
brought upon an individual by a variety of methods, many of which can be demonstrated in a
laboratory setting. This experiment s study focused on the effect of PTU on hypothyroidism in

47. Surveillance In 1984 By George Orwell
In George Orwell s 1984 we are introduced to a totalitarian society known as Oceania which is ran by
the political group known as the Party. The Party is able to control every aspect of person s life by
using terror, surveillance, and a repressive bureaucracy to exert total power over the individual
(Kellner, 2). They are able to control their jobs, relationships, and even their minds. The Party uses
carefully constructed tools in order for them to maintain control over the people. The Party can only
maintain control if they are able to control the minds of the people and keep them in a constant state of
confusion and paranoia. The Party does this by using surveillance, Newspeak, and manipulating the
past. One of the tools used by the Party is surveillance. The people of Oceania are in a constant state
of being monitored by the Party through invasive technology and loyal followers of the Party such as
telescreens and children. Michael Yeo states, Instances of surveillances divide into two main kinds:
panoptical and surreptitious (Yeo, 53). Panoptical surveillance is internalized self supervision or self
surveillance. It is the belief that one is being watch, so one censors themselves from unorthodox
thoughts in order to avoid detection. There was no way to be certain if you were being watched or not.

overheard, and except in darkness, every movement scrutinized
