The Niagara Escarpment AVA is a relatively new viticulture designated area. The area received
the designation in 2005 and is now one of the fastest growing wine regions in New York State.
This AVA is comprised of a portion of the Niagara Escarpment landform that runs from New York
State through Canada into Wisconsin. (Fig. A) The escarpment has formed over time due to
erosion of the rock layers. The top rock layer, dolomitic limestone, is more weather resistant
causing it to erode slower and creating the escarpment landform. Fig. A
The escarpment is an ideal area for grape growing, as well as other fruits, due to the microclimate
created by the combination of the escarpment and Lake Ontario. Those growing areas that are near
the lake experience weather that is slightly moderated by the presence of the lake waters. Those

form. The warm air trapped by the escarpment helps to provide those vineyards with a longer

separate public and private schools into their own divisions has been a topic of discussion for
years. As a product of 14 years of Catholic education, I was fortunate enough to be able to
participate in athletics during my high schoolcareer. Many of the teams that we played were public
schoolteams from small communities where athletics were almost more important than an
education. Unfortunately, I have witnessed firsthand the animosity that has surfaced between
public and private schools.
The PIAA is the governing body of high school sports in the state of Pennsylvania. The PIAA
was founded in 1913 and initially included only public schools as members. Parochial and private
schools were admitted to the PIAA in the late 1970 s. In 1997, the PA Charter School Act was
passed which allowed for the creation of charter schools. The emergence of charter schools,
particularly in the Philadelphia area, created even greater animosity between private and public
schools. The Philadelphia schools, many of which are charter schools, were not members of the
PIAA until 2003. Their athletic success at the state championship level has raised many concerns

home? Crystal wasn t every other woman though; her husband was the Chief of Police in Tacoma,

rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) and the last being rapid eye movement sleep (REM). The
sleep cycle follows a pattern where it starts over every 90 minutes.1 When in stage one, you are
in a very light state of sleep, and you can be very easily awakened. Eye movement just starts to
slow down and muscles begin to relax.2 Then entering stage two, brain waves become slower
and eye movement ceases, sometimes displaying spindles on the epochs.2 During this stage
your heart rate and breathing remain the same, but your body starts to cool down as your
temperature begins to decrease.1 Upon entering stages 3 and 4, you enter a deep sleep and it is
hard to be awakened. In stage 3, your brain waves are very slow, or known as delta waves on the
epoch.2 During these stages, you begin to breath slower, your blood pressure falls, and your
