The butt joint is the simplest woodworking joint where two pieces of timber are butted directly against each other at the ends. It is the weakest joint but easiest to make. To make a butt joint, the timber pieces are measured and cut to length, then glued and clamped together. Optional reinforcements like dowels or screws can be added to strengthen the joint. While cheap and simple, butt joints have weaknesses due to their small gluing surface area and are prone to breaking.
