1. English bond
English bonds (masonry) In bricklaying, an arrangement of
bricks such that one course has the short sides of the bricks
(headers) facing outwards, and the next course has the long
sides of the bricks (stretchers) facing outwards.
It is most common wall bond having strong bond strength. In
order to break vertical joints in the successive course, it is
essential to place queen closer after the first header in each
heading course. One Brick English bong have thickness 230mm.
DISADVANTAGE:
1. Penetration of damp through transverse joints.
2. Appearance not as good as Flemish bond.

2. One and Half Brick English Bond have thickness nearly 230+110+10= 350 mm. One and half brick is
generally use for stepping of foundation of brick wall and load bearing wall.

3. FLEMISH BOND
Flemish bond (plural Flemish bonds) (masonry) In bricklaying, an arrangement of bricks such that each
course consists of alternate bricks having their short sides (headers) and long sides (stretchers) facing
outwards, with alternate courses being offset. The headers and stretchers alternate in each course. The
lap is produced by placing a queen- closer next to the quoin-header in every course. Flemish bond is
weaker than English bond. In Flemish Bond, each course presents the same appearance both in the front
and back elevations. Every course consists of headers and stretchers laid alternately. This type of bond is
best suited from considerations of economy and appearance. It enables the one brick wall to uniform
faces on both the sides.
ADVANTAGES OF FLEMISH BOND:
1. It is highly economical.
2. Walls one brick in thickness are easier to produce a fair face on both sides in Flemish than in
English bond.
3. The appearance of Flemish bond is more appealing to eye than that of English bond.
