Discuss the biological explanation for phobic disorders
Discuss issues of reliability and validity associated with the classification and diagnosis of phobic
disorders (24 marks)
The biological explanation for the acquisition of phobic disorders establishes that phobias are caused
by genetics, innate influences and the principles of biochemistry. This theory recognizes that an
oversensitive fear response may be inherited, causing abnormal levels of anxiety. This is illustrated in
the basis of inheritance, particularly the adrenergic theory that convicts that those who have an
acquisition to phobic disorders consequently show high levels of arousal in the automatic nervous
system, which leads to increased amounts of adrenaline, thus causing high levels of anxiety.
However this theory lacks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Parallel to this, the focus on genetics is Particularly convicted in twin studies, which establish a
comparison between monozygotic twins that are identical and dizygotic twins, which are opposingly
non identical. This distinction can be identified in Torgersens study, which compared MZ and same
sex DZ twins where one proband had an anxiety disorder, and it was discovered that such disorders
were 5x more frequent in MZ twin pairs, who mutually shared identical genetics.
This theory creates an issue, as it only looks at nature s impact as the root cause of phobic disorders
and relishes in not accounting for environmental causes, which are posed by nurture. This aspect of
nurture which is ignored can be questioned in the twin studies as although Torgersen found that
identical twins who share genes are 5x more likely to share an anxiety disorder, it is unclear whether it
is the nature of the genetic makeup which causes the disorder, or the nurture of the twins, as they
would have both gone through the same things in their environment causing the contamination effect.
This is further highlighted through the diathesis stress model formed by Di nardo et al which provides

The Prestige Analysis
The Prestige Analysis
The Prestige is a film adaptation of the Christopher Priest novel bearing the same name. The story is
set in the turn of the century London about two stage magicians, their rivalry, and their obsession to be
the best with the artistry and secrecy of illusion. The analysis of The Prestige will examine several
aspects of the film including plot, character development, use of sound, use of photography, set
design, lighting, and role of the collaborators. Each of these areas is important to create the emotion,
suspense, and energy for a successful and entertaining film.
The Plot
The filmmakers introduce a man who designs the equipment to pull off the illusions. The magic of a
successful illusion consists of three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other key characters include Mr. Cutter, Sarah Borden, and Olivia Wenscombe. Mr. Cutter, the
engineer that designs the mechanical devices used for the illusions, tells the story leading up to the
death of Mr. Angier and Mr. Borden. Sarah Borden, Alfred Borden s wife, displays confusion over the
on again, off again love received by Mr. Borden. Throughout the film, she expresses this confusion by
telling Alfred, Today, it s true, or Today, you don t mean it (Nolan, Ryder, and Thomas). She believes
on some days, his love of magic is greater than his love for her. Olivia Wenscombe, Mr. Angier s
assistant and later Mr. Borden s mistress, represented a woman who loved the attention of the stage.
Her outgoing personality embodied through her clothing and her dialogue.
The Use of Sound
Even though the film is essentially a visual experience, the use of sound has become extremely
important in modern film. The modern viewer hears a complicated soundtrack that is as meaningful as
the image on the screen. Three elements comprise the film s soundtrack: the dialogue, the sound
effects, and the musical score. The proper balance and mix of these elements produced the essential
emphasis required, which created the desired effects. As explained by Joseph Boggs and Dennis
Petrie,
Because we are more consciously aware of what we see than what we hear, we generally accept the
soundtrack without much thought, responding intuitively to the

Disobedience and dishonesty in The Little Red Cap and The Neapolitan Soldier
In the following essay I show how my academic disobedience and dishonesty parallels the
disobedience and dishonesty in the folk and fairy tales. In the The Neapolitan Soldier by Italo Calvino,
three soldiers who gets lost in the forest at night instead of sleeping they decide that two are going to
sleep while one will stay awake and look after the other two turn after turn. The first soldier
encounters a giant and kills him but decides not to tell the second soldier. The second soldier
encounter a giant too but decides not to tell the third soldier. The third soldier in his turn kills a giant
and but instead of switching his turn he decides to explore more about the giants. Often, It is argued
that the main reason the soldiers were dishonest about their encounters with the giants were was to
avoid fright and flee for the next soldered. However, it is claimed that he was dishonest because, he
wanted to sleep and avoid the consequence of finding a much safer place for the night.
I still remember it was my first class for the semester. I was excited for my first literature class.
Everything went as good as I hoped, at the end of the class, Mr Matt our literature Professor assigned
us with a drama review essay, for which we had to watch a live play at a theater and write a review on
our experience. Four months later now i am trying to fix the wrong that i did. The day Mr Matt gave
us the assignment he instructed us that you have 4 months to complete this assignment. Me being a
lazy person planned to do it in the last month.. Three months passed by in the blink of an eye. When
the time finally came to do my assignment. I was short of money to buy a ticket for the play as i spent
a lot on social activities. But then i thought i can watch a play on youtube and write a review on that,
without using any money. So i disobeyed My Professor s instructions and submitted a false
assignment by watching a youtube video.
Thinking about it now makes me realize my mistakes. I neglected the fact that laziness is an addiction
and in order to keep being lazy, I became dishonest so i can avoid the consequences. This reminded

The Equity Method of Accounting for Investments
Chapter 1 the equity method of accounting for investments Chapter Outline I. Three methods are
principally used to account for an investment in equity securities. A. Fair value method: applied by an
investor when only a small percentage of a company s voting stock is held. 1. Income is recognized
when dividends are declared. 2. Portfolios are reported at market value. If market values are
unavailable, investment is reported at cost. B. Consolidation: when one firm controls another (e.g.,
when a parent has a majority interest in the voting stock of a subsidiary or control through variable
interests (FIN 46R), their financial statements are consolidated and reported for the combined entity.

B. Payments made in excess of underlying book value can sometimes be identified with specific
investee accounts such as inventory or equipment. C. An extra acquisition price can also be assigned
to anticipated benefits that are expected to be derived from the investment. For accounting purposes,
these amounts are presumed to reflect an intangible asset referred to as goodwill. Goodwill is
calculated as any excess payment that is not attributable to specific accounts. For the year 2002 and
beyond, goodwill is no longer amortized. V. Deferral of unrealized gains in inventory A. Gains derived
from intercompany transactions are not considered completely earned until the transferred goods are
either consumed or resold to unrelated parties. B. Downstream sales of inventory 1. Downstream
refers to transfers made by the investor to the investee. 2. Intercompany gains from sales are initially
deferred under the equity method and then recognized as income at the time of the inventory s
eventual disposal. 3. The amount of gain to be deferred is the investor s ownership percentage
multiplied by the markup on the merchandise remaining at the end of the year. C. Upstream sales of
inventory 1. Upstream refers to transfers made by the investee to the investor. 2. Under the equity
method, the deferral process for unrealized gains is identical for upstream

Relationship With Customer And Client
Establish Relationship with customer/client: When customers come to place an order, they are either
directed to the marketing classroom or someone is called to the school office to meet with them. When
in the classroom, the customers see first hand how the product is made. They see students diligently
weeding vinyl, pressing articles of clothing, and laying banners out. This is interesting to the customer
because they like to see how their product is made. This also endears them to the marketing program
as a whole because they see the students who benefit from their purchases.
When a student is sent to the office to meet with the customers, they make the initial connection. This
is when the students probes for information about the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the product was not a custom order and the customer decided that they do not like their order, they
may return the product, as long as it has not been worn. We do not give refunds, but we will give
credit towards a new product of their choosing.
An example of our return policy is when a customer comes back with a shirt that has vinyl lettering
coming off, we will fix the shirt since the vinyl coming off is an indicator that we did not press the
shirt long enough. We would apologize for this error and offer the customer a discount on a future
order.
Process sales documentation: At the conclusion of order, an invoice is generated in the marketing
classroom. Customers then pay our bookkeeper who in turn, gives a receipt to customers and invoices
to the marketing program. The invoices is then put on file and used to gather data, such as how much
standard inventory to buy. Students learn how to file invoices, with advisors keeping a close watch to
make sure it s done correctly. Many hands make light work and so the invoices are efficiently filed
and then the data can be combined quicker as well.
Determine customer/client needs: We have a standard form for customers to fill out to order garments.
This form is emailed to all schools within our district so it is readily accessible to all students and
parents. School district secretaries collect standard orders and forward them to us. This form

Land is a natural resource that is often mistreated due to human activities. If we learned anything from
our past, it is that history leads the same course for those who misuses the environment. Therefore the
government have gone through extreme preventative measures to protect our environment by
designating Wild lands . The Bureau of Land Management (BML) is given the power to designate
wild lands and control the use of it. Much controversy have arisen since then and the debate on
whether or not Wild Lands are harming rural economies is still ongoing. Mike Mckee, a speaker at the

Mr. Amoroso pr3
September 27 2016 .
Death in one s life time is unavoidable. In a way those effected by death, die themselves but ultimately
shed that part of their life to grow a new stronger and wiser layer in its place. Rudolfo Anaya shows
this perfectly in his novel Bless Me, Ultima, with the use of his character Antonio. Anaya uses death
as a catalyst to the solution for Antonio s frustrations on religion. Each death showing significances to
the plot and or on Tony because of how it caused him to question his beliefs and the beliefs pressured
on him. Death is one of the sole constant in this novel, it begins and ends in death to where one can
say Anaya interprets death to pioneer the resolution for Antonio s ambivalence.
Young Antonio Tony Juan Márez y Luna is the product of a mother who in bound by the earth and
God and a father who s soul is as free as the sea. Mother Maria Luna y Márez comes from the Luna
blood where God and the farm land is praised; her wish being that Tony will grow to become the next
Luna priest. On the other hand we have his father Gabriel Márez a man of the wild and lionhearted
llano blood who never really pressures his son to become anything; but had his own remaining dreams
of moving to California the land of milk and honey as he calls it and having one of his children assist

Compensation is something, usually money, given to someone as a recompense for loss, injury, or

many are still alive to this day. Henrietta was actually born Loretta Pleasant and later changed her

her mother, Henrietta moved with her grandfather and met her soon to be husband David Day Lacks.
David was Henrietta s first cousin and this caused health issues such as hearing loss within her

another daughter named Elsie in 1939, and eventually married in 1941 (Biography). Elsie was
diagnosed with mental illness and sent to an insane asylum where she was often beaten and later died.
Images were taken of the horrific experiments and environmental living of these individuals. Henrietta

Comparing Dorian Gray And Neil Jordan s Interview With A
Oscar Wilde s The Picture of Dorian Gray and Neil Jordan s Interview with a Vampire are gothic
narrations that incorporate the themes of sensuality and hedonism. Although the texts do not contain
any explicit statements of homoeroticism, the suggestive narration, allusions and imagery, camera
angles and music highlight the homoerotic feelings between men. While Wilde does not mention any
homosexual acts explicitly, the element of homoeroticism is described within the competition for
Dorian s attention. Dorian is described through allusions to be likened to Adonis; a creature who looks
as if he were made of ivory and rose leaves. (Lord Henry Wotten) Adonis, a representation of youthful
idealism is a symbolic gesture of Dorian s youthful sensuality. Lord Henry and Basil Hallward praise
Dorian s youthful demeanour, Basil commenting as long as I live, the personality of Dorian Gray will
dominate me. (Basil Hallward) Whilst Basil is rejected, Dorian wishes to emulate Lord Henry, which
in turn, rouses Lord Henry from his characteristic languor to a desire to influence Dorian, a process
that is itself a sublimated expression of homosexuality. The older gentlemen s longing for Dorian and
his admiration of them adds taboo to the secrecy of the characters private lives. Sensuality and ...

Abstract
The state of the U.S. economy has an impact on every American. There has been economic depression
in this country since the collapse of the housing market in 2007, that has seen widespread
unemployment and home foreclosure combined with conservative consumer spending. Research
conducted through financial new websites, government reports and survey provided information on
where the economy stands today as well as how Americans view the economy. The findings were that
there are signs of improvement within the economy, yet those polled indicate they feel there is little

So, where does our economy stand now? Many Americans would like an answer to this question. In
order to find an answer, we must look at the factors that drive this economy. The U.S Economy
currently shows signs of improvement based on a declining unemployment rate increased consumer
spending and falling foreclosure rate in 2011.
The topic of unemployment is one that has affected Americans greatly during the recession. Millions
of people in the United States have found it very difficult gain employment.

one would expect Moore s law to continue to allow exponentially more powerful processors from here

processors being so fast they produce too much heat to effectively cool, leading to CPU developers
needing to design new cooling systems or a new way of making transistors entirely. Another hurdle for
CPU developers is that as the transistors become smaller and smaller, quantum tunneling takes place,
and a semiconductor becomes just a conductor, allowing power all of the time. A possible solution

A study conducted by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded that the literature is
inconclusive regarding whether SNAP alleviates hunger and malnutrition in low income households.
(Montgomery, 2013) The (GAO) also stated that, those who choose to participate in food assistance
programs generally have greater difficulty meeting their food needs and tend to be more food insecure
compared to others that are eligible for programs but do not participate. (Montgomery, 2013) What
this study suggests is that the economically burdensome Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
is not only lucrative in cost, but fails to meet its objective of making a sizable impact on food
insecurity and hunger issues within the United States most nutritionally insecure counties.
In 2016 alone, SNAP cost U.S. taxpayers 78 billion. (Edwards, 2016) SNAP eligibility is determined
by the recipient s assets and income. A U.S. citizen becomes unable to qualify for SNAP subsidization
when he or she is no longer within 130 percent of the poverty level. (Edwards, 2016) This

Essay On Mexico Drugs
When the words kidnappings, torture, and beheadings, places that come to mind are Syria, Iraq, and
Afghanistan. But there is a north american country, much closer, that is surging in the amount of
violent crimes like those aforementioned: Mexico. Despite being widely known as a place for spring
breakers to have parties or for families to enjoy the warm summer weather, in recent years, Mexico s
crime and violence has gotten worse, with 40,000 lives taken since 2006. Even Acapulco, Mexico s
most famous Pacific Port has been littered with tragic stories concerning shootings and robberies.
Cancun and Cozumel, two of the biggest tourist towns represent some of the worst hazards. Cancun
boasts a population of about 500,000. And like any city with that many people, crime makes itself
right at home. Tijuana, one of Mexico s biggest and busiest cities, it s also one of the most crime

Specific Phobias
The most common treatment for specific phobias is a form of psychotherapy called exposure therapy,
although other treatments include other therapies or medication (Andrews et al. 2009). The goal of
treatment for specific phobias is to improve quality of life so that patients are no longer limited by
their phobias. Exposure therapy focuses on changing the response to the object or situation feared.
Gradual, repeated exposure to the source of the specific phobia and the related thoughts, feelings and
sensations can help patients to learn to manage their anxiety (Andrews et al. 2009). There are many
variations of exposure therapy. In vivo exposure involves confronting the phobic stimulus head on but
gradually. For example, a patient suffering

Investigating the Main Feautres of Different Places of Worship
I have chosen the Roman Catholic Church and the Baptist Church. The most important features of the
Roman Catholic Church are the Tabernacle and the Altar. These form the focal point of the building.
The Altar is situated on a platform, which is usually 2 3 steps so that the congregation are involved in
the mass visually. The tabernacle is usually beside or behind the altar. The altar contains a fragment
from the bone of a saint. This signifies the difference between the altar and a normal table. The altar
dates back to the Ancient Jews, who sacrificed animals, on a table in the temple, towards God.

The focal point of the Baptist Church is the pulpit; this is where the bible is kept. Baptists use the bible

most important part of the service. Baptists don t believe in sacraments they only believe in the power

Definition of Marketing Marketing is often misunderstood. Ask the average person how they would
define marketing and a majority would reply with something along the lines of commercials, ads,
brochures, and other items used to market a business. Marketing is complex. It is a process, a practice,
and a philosophy. As a process, it moves goods and services from an idea all the way through to the
customer. As a practice, it embodies the elements of product, price, place, and promotion. As a
philosophy, it is the basis of how customers needs and satisfaction are met by the business product or
service. According to Perreault, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nike uses successful and famous sports figures to endorse their products. Consumers are willing to
pay higher prices for items that they view to be superior in quality, reliability, and style. Brand
management is one of Nike s greatest strengths. For example, basketball great Michael Jordan s

Clifford s Views On Religion
Clifford makes an excellent point that we should take into consideration all beliefs and ethics. But his
philosophy that it is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient
evidence is a little harsh for me. On the other hand James more faith filled philosophy based on his
view of religion, recognizing facts and the truth and how the choices we make in our lives effect us
everyday are some of the more relatable ethics that we can apply in our daily lives and to give us some
guidance in a life full of so many choices. As we know many people have a stance on religion just like
WK Clifford who has a very strong view about religion, but some do not agree. William James for
examples thinks that, Clifford s principles should be not to be applied to religious beliefs because as
he points out moral questions cannot simply be settled by the facts. James argues that we have a right
to believe in some cases, when supporting evidence may be lacking. James sees the basic idea of
religion as having two parts that the best things are the eternal things, and that you will be better off in
the here and now if you believe this. An example of something we almost all believe in without
sufficient evidence, is the emotions we feel often every day. The many emotions we feel everyday
such as happiness, anger, or even sympathy are very often morally relevant to us. Emotions are not
settled by facts we just feel them and for sometimes no reason at all. Like

Reflection On Disability Language Terminology

First Reflective: Disability Language Terminology
In one of my first lectures given by Jessica Amberson on 26 September 2015 a point was made of how
terminology associated with defining disability is continually in flux. This prompted me to consider
why is the language of disability in constant change and has it evolved?
I researched the historical language used to describe different types of disability. Firstly, I realised how
the negative stigma of loss was attached to it (Barton 1996, p.8) and how the commencement of the
Industrial Age began the medical labelling of those incapable of working in order to separate them
from those who were reluctant to work (Oliver and Barnes 2012, pp. 14 15). Before researching I had
not realised the extent that capitalism has had on underpinning the negative language used to define
disability (Barnes and Mercer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Superhumans Return. The advertisement starts off with people with different types of disabilities.
Each playing the part of a villain that wants revenge on the world. I noticed that all the villains were
wearing dark clothes and were in gloomy and bleak scenery. This is a typical stereotype that popular
media has depicted for impaired people. However the tone of the advert changes when the announcer
states Disabled people don t have to play the villain . The advert then proceeds to show impaired

Why Do Lincoln Use Significant Figures
Any good chemist would understand that when Abraham Lincoln said four score and seven years ago
he was actually using significant figures. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th
while Lincoln delivered this speech on November 19th. This means that it actually occurred four
score, seven years, four months, and 12 days before. Admittedly that does not roll off the tongue as
smoothly, so it s understandable that Lincoln would only use two significant figures. Significant
figures are the reason that the beginning lines of the Gettysburg address will forever be remembered
by Eighth graders across the country. Without the use of significant figures, numbers in chemistry
wouldn t have any meaning. I could say 2g when I m really ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

If you are given a measurement of 4g and a measurement of 4.0001g, you would understand that the
equipment used to measure 4.0001g is much more precise than the equipment used to measure 4g.
Although significant figures tell us about the precision of the measurement, we really cannot attest to
the accuracy of the measurement unless we are sure of the correct answer. The same rule about the
estimated digit is applied when taking measurement. The way to report an analog measurement is to
write down all the digits you are confident in and estimate one digit further. For example, if using a
10ml graduated cylinder with nine markings in between the numbers 1ml and 2ml and the liquid falls
between 1.5ml and 1.6ml, but closer to 1.5ml, the digits you are confident in are 1 and 5. Therefore
you estimate another digit which you think it could be such as 1.53ml. When making a digital
measurement, the rule is to always write down every digit while understanding that the last digit is an
estimation. There are also a few important differences between the course policy and the textbook.
One is that the book states that if you place a $#$#0$#$# to the right of trailing zeroes, it would make
those zeroes significant e.g. 500. has 3 significant figures while 500 has 1. This is not true and they
should be ashamed. Another difference is in the convention of marking significant figures. In this
course, Professor Halpin will underline all significant figures to identify them. It just makes it easier to
get the correct answer while rounding to the correct number of significant figures. The book does not

After a theoretical analysis of the pharmaceutical industry, the research includes the development of
an analytical framework, which serves as a basis for the examination of the selected websites. This is
followed by an analysis based on the CSR section of the websites of three world leader
pharmaceutical wholesalers and service providers within the pharmaceutical industry. A qualitative
methodology applied to the written content of the websites allows drawing conclusions on the reasons
that lead these companies to get involved in CSR. It also provides an interpretation of how these firms
organize their CSR communication, and which CSR communication strategies they use for addressing
their stakeholders. Findings: The engagement in CSR of companies developing its activities and
business within the pharmaceutical industry respond to the different challenges this industry faces.
External stakeholders (NGOs, media, consumer advocacy groups and the public opinion) carefully
watch the steps taken by pharmaceuticals. As a consequence, the initiatives and communications must

Ethical Issues In Huck Finn
Throughout its history, Huck Finn has faced many controversies. It was shunned by many news outlets
at the time of its writing for its subject matter, being called trash by many publications. It was even
banned from some libraries for this reason. However, despite its flaws, Huck Finn proves to be an
entertaining novel that offers an interesting look into pre Civil war America, and should be freely
avaliable for all to read. Despite its inherent value as an examination of its time, many people had a
problem with the manner in which it was portrayed. One of these apparent issues was noted by a
censor of the Concord public library, who called into question the use of the dialect and grammatical
style of the book. To quote the New York Herald, who were reporting on the situation, Another
committeeman perused the volume with great care and discovered that it was couched in the language
of a rough, ignorant dialect and that all through its pages there is a systematic use of bad grammar and
an employment of inelegant expressions. These mannerisms, combined with other offenses, led to the
book garnering a trashy reputation in the eyes of the censors, who quickly banned it from their library.
however, to view these mannerisms as trashy and nothing more would be to misunderstand a large
portion of the novel s appeal. This novel is a period piece, set in the south before the onset of the Civil
War. In order to fully immerse the reader into this setting, Twain made sure to include all of the
different dialects that a person in that setting might hear. As the Athenaeum deftly explains, (The
characters are) schooled in half a dozen extraordinary dialects the Pike County dialect in all its forms,
the dialect of the Missouri negro, and the extremest form of the backwoods South Western dialect, to
wit. This makes the story and characters more entertaining, as it allows the reader to truly immerse
themselves into the narrative. However, some would argue that this immersion isn t entertaining in it s
own right. These people would say that, despite its the lengths it take to immerse you in its story, it s
generally coarse nature would drive off anyone who would try to endure it for more than five minutes.

Is Children’s Development a Universal Staged Process or a...
Is Children s development a universal staged process or a social and cultural process?
There are three main approaches to child development, the scientific, the social constructionist and the
applied approach. Each of these approaches look at children s development from a different stand
point. I will go on to explore each approach in turn and how they can help us answer the above
question.
The scientific approach to child development seeks to explain the facts about child development. It
does this by devising theories which are then tested through observations and experiments. A classic
example of this is Jean Piaget (1896 1890) who was one of the most influential theorists in child
development. Piaget built up a theory about how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Different cultures, religions and social economic conditions have different expectations and beliefs
around childhood. These have also been different throughout history. For example in Victorian Britain,
children were expected to work in the home, field, streets or in factories. However in modern Britain
we expect our children to spend much of their childhood learning at school. Another example is, Maya
s (U212 Video 1, band 1) experiences of childhood in the poor area Chittagong being different to the
twins Yasir and Yamin s experiences in middle class Chittagong. Each have different expectations of
their roles within society according to their social boundaries, gender, family and beliefs.
Central to the social constructionist approach is the concept of competing discourses of childhood. A
discourse is a particular way of thinking or a particular view point that is influenced by our gender,
language, history, beliefs, experiences and social boundaries. There are numerous discourses but a
romantic discourse sees children as inherently good; a child would only do terrible things if damaged
in some way. Contrary to this is the puritanical discourse which sees the child as inherently evil, doing
evil things because they are wicked and need punishing. Using the social constructionist view allows
us to recognise that a child who is a killer can be seen through these two very

MRAPAcquisition
As if it were not complex enough, the Defense Acquisition System (DAS) resides within a complex
system. Congress, industry, and national strategy all influence and affect the acquisition process. Mass
producing the effectiveness of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle (MRAP) acquisition may
tempt the amateur. However, although the unprecedented speed and strategic leader attention afforded
the MRAP acquisition resulted in relative success, the process should not be used as a model for future
acquisitions. The challenge of acquisition lays in difficult to define metrics, shifting policies, short
term leadership, and its position of a complex system within a system. First, measuring success and
failure proves elusive, making identifying meaningful change difficult. Perhaps because of this fact,
the rules change rapidly. Since its inception in 1971, the Department of Defense Directive (DoDD)
5000 series has been revised more than a dozen times a change approximately once every three years.
Well meaning and proactive defense secretaries institute changes and then leave office prior to
institutionalization. Finally, due to the complexity of the system of systems involved, no single
internal modification possesses the ability to maximize the acquisition process. These three factors
alone make acquisition and acquisition reform a Sisyphean task. Of the three factors discussed above,
strategic leadership holds the most potential to effectively influence the

The Archetype Of Theseus As A Hero
Heroes are inspirational figures in stories that relay relatable messages. Some of the most famous
heroes include Harry Potter, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. In greek mythology, Theseus, like
Superman or Harry Potter, is also considered a hero. Theseus was the son of Poseidon who went to
Athens to meet his supposed father, the king. In hopes of freeing him of his debt, he travels to Crete
where Minos resided and killed the minotaur whom Aegeus was to feed 7 each of the most beautiful
maidens and courageous men in his kingdom. Theseus is considered a hero for he possesses qualities
of a hero and his/her journey. Theseus fits the hero archetype because he is clever, which means that
he has situational intelligence; he is determined, which means that he is firmly set in opinion or
purpose; and he has a supernatural helper, which is someone who aids the hero in his/her quest usually
by providing them with a talisman or advice.
Theseus is clever in that he is able to figure out a solution hastily given a situation. On his journey to
Athens, Theseus encountered Sciron whom he had heard of as someone who fed passersby to his giant
turtle. In the text, it states, When the giant kicked, Theseus pulled, dodging swiftly out of the way as
the enormous body hurled over him, over and down, splashing the water cliff high as it hit (Evslin
153). In order to avoid being fed to the turtle, he used the giant s kick tactic against him and sent him
hurling down into the water. This

Progressivism Was Motivated By Various Progressive Ideas...
Progressivism was the change development that kept running from the late 19th century through the
main many years of the 20th century, which driving educated people and social reformers in the
United States looked to address the monetary, political, and social inquiries that had emerged with
regards to the quick changes carried with the Industrial Revolution and the development of current
private enterprise in America. The Progressives trusted that these progressions denoted the end of the

Expansionism was motivated by various progressive ideas. Imperialism was an adjournment of the

The United States dominated the world market in producing items by 1900. They produced petroleum

Munch would always be reminded of his family s death, their torment followed his shadow and further
encroached on his mind the more time went on. Various styles, motifs, and paintings from artists such
as Claude Monet and Eugène Carrière inspired his work. However, Carrière s Sick Child, 1885 would
be a pivoting point in influencing his own painting of the same name. One of Munch s first work that
showed his notorious style can be seen in The Sick Child, 1886 painting just a year after Carrière s.
His painting depicts his sister Sophie bedridden from Tuberculosis and his mother mourning beside
her waiting for her to pass. He paints in a very melancholy tone and the color gives the viewer the
impression of sickness and sorrow. He expresses his feelings years later describing how few have ever
experienced the full grief of their subject as I did in The Sick Child. (qtd. in Prideaux 85 86). Munch s
painterly style allows us to feel the anguish and pain he must have felt while painting The Sick Child.

  • 2. Discuss the biological explanation for phobic disorders Discuss issues of reliability and validity associated with the classification and diagnosis of phobic disorders (24 marks) The biological explanation for the acquisition of phobic disorders establishes that phobias are caused by genetics, innate influences and the principles of biochemistry. This theory recognizes that an oversensitive fear response may be inherited, causing abnormal levels of anxiety. This is illustrated in the basis of inheritance, particularly the adrenergic theory that convicts that those who have an acquisition to phobic disorders consequently show high levels of arousal in the automatic nervous system, which leads to increased amounts of adrenaline, thus causing high levels of anxiety. However this theory lacks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parallel to this, the focus on genetics is Particularly convicted in twin studies, which establish a comparison between monozygotic twins that are identical and dizygotic twins, which are opposingly non identical. This distinction can be identified in Torgersens study, which compared MZ and same sex DZ twins where one proband had an anxiety disorder, and it was discovered that such disorders were 5x more frequent in MZ twin pairs, who mutually shared identical genetics. This theory creates an issue, as it only looks at nature s impact as the root cause of phobic disorders and relishes in not accounting for environmental causes, which are posed by nurture. This aspect of nurture which is ignored can be questioned in the twin studies as although Torgersen found that identical twins who share genes are 5x more likely to share an anxiety disorder, it is unclear whether it is the nature of the genetic makeup which causes the disorder, or the nurture of the twins, as they would have both gone through the same things in their environment causing the contamination effect. This is further highlighted through the diathesis stress model formed by Di nardo et al which provides a much more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story is set in the turn of the century London about two stage magicians, their rivalry, and their obsession to be the best with the artistry and secrecy of illusion. The analysis of The Prestige will examine several aspects of the film including plot, character development, use of sound, use of photography, set design, lighting, and role of the collaborators. Each of these areas is important to create the emotion, suspense, and energy for a successful and entertaining film. The Plot The filmmakers introduce a man who designs the equipment to pull off the illusions. The magic of a successful illusion consists of three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other key characters include Mr. Cutter, Sarah Borden, and Olivia Wenscombe. Mr. Cutter, the engineer that designs the mechanical devices used for the illusions, tells the story leading up to the death of Mr. Angier and Mr. Borden. Sarah Borden, Alfred Borden s wife, displays confusion over the on again, off again love received by Mr. Borden. Throughout the film, she expresses this confusion by telling Alfred, Today, it s true, or Today, you don t mean it (Nolan, Ryder, and Thomas). She believes on some days, his love of magic is greater than his love for her. Olivia Wenscombe, Mr. Angier s assistant and later Mr. Borden s mistress, represented a woman who loved the attention of the stage. Her outgoing personality embodied through her clothing and her dialogue. The Use of Sound Even though the film is essentially a visual experience, the use of sound has become extremely important in modern film. The modern viewer hears a complicated soundtrack that is as meaningful as the image on the screen. Three elements comprise the film s soundtrack: the dialogue, the sound effects, and the musical score. The proper balance and mix of these elements produced the essential emphasis required, which created the desired effects. As explained by Joseph Boggs and Dennis Petrie, Because we are more consciously aware of what we see than what we hear, we generally accept the soundtrack without much thought, responding intuitively to the ... • 5. Disobedience And Dishonesty In The Little Red Cap And The... Disobedience and dishonesty in The Little Red Cap and The Neapolitan Soldier In the following essay I show how my academic disobedience and dishonesty parallels the disobedience and dishonesty in the folk and fairy tales. In the The Neapolitan Soldier by Italo Calvino, three soldiers who gets lost in the forest at night instead of sleeping they decide that two are going to sleep while one will stay awake and look after the other two turn after turn. The first soldier encounters a giant and kills him but decides not to tell the second soldier. The second soldier encounter a giant too but decides not to tell the third soldier. The third soldier in his turn kills a giant and but instead of switching his turn he decides to explore more about the giants. • 26. Clifford s Views On Religion Clifford makes an excellent point that we should take into consideration all beliefs and ethics. But his philosophy that it is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence is a little harsh for me. On the other hand James more faith filled philosophy based on his view of religion, recognizing facts and the truth and how the choices we make in our lives effect us everyday are some of the more relatable ethics that we can apply in our daily lives and to give us some guidance in a life full of so many choices. As we know many people have a stance on religion just like WK Clifford who has a very strong view about religion, but some do not agree. William James for examples thinks that, Clifford s principles should be not to be applied to religious beliefs because as he points out moral questions cannot simply be settled by the facts. James argues that we have a right to believe in some cases, when supporting evidence may be lacking. James sees the basic idea of religion as having two parts that the best things are the eternal things, and that you will be better off in the here and now if you believe this. An example of something we almost all believe in without sufficient evidence, is the emotions we feel often every day. The many emotions we feel everyday such as happiness, anger, or even sympathy are very often morally relevant to us. Emotions are not settled by facts we just feel them and for sometimes no reason at all. Like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reflection On Disability Language Terminology 2016 AD5832: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Inclusion (Louise Griffin Student Number 113141171) First Reflective: Disability Language Terminology In one of my first lectures given by Jessica Amberson on 26 September 2015 a point was made of how terminology associated with defining disability is continually in flux. This prompted me to consider why is the language of disability in constant change and has it evolved? I researched the historical language used to describe different types of disability. Firstly, I realised how the negative stigma of loss was attached to it (Barton 1996, p.8) and how the commencement of the Industrial Age began the medical labelling of those incapable of working in order to separate them from those who were reluctant to work (Oliver and Barnes 2012, pp. 14 15). Before researching I had not realised the extent that capitalism has had on underpinning the negative language used to define disability (Barnes and Mercer ... The advertisement starts off with people with different types of disabilities. Each playing the part of a villain that wants revenge on the world. I noticed that all the villains were wearing dark clothes and were in gloomy and bleak scenery. This is a typical stereotype that popular media has depicted for impaired people. However the tone of the advert changes when the announcer states Disabled people don t have to play the villain . The advert then proceeds to show impaired people, some who have prosthesis and all are participating in various ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th while Lincoln delivered this speech on November 19th. This means that it actually occurred four score, seven years, four months, and 12 days before. Admittedly that does not roll off the tongue as smoothly, so it s understandable that Lincoln would only use two significant figures. Significant figures are the reason that the beginning lines of the Gettysburg address will forever be remembered by Eighth graders across the country. If you are given a measurement of 4g and a measurement of 4.0001g, you would understand that the equipment used to measure 4.0001g is much more precise than the equipment used to measure 4g. Although significant figures tell us about the precision of the measurement, we really cannot attest to the accuracy of the measurement unless we are sure of the correct answer. The same rule about the estimated digit is applied when taking measurement. The way to report an analog measurement is to write down all the digits you are confident in and estimate one digit further. For example, if using a 10ml graduated cylinder with nine markings in between the numbers 1ml and 2ml and the liquid falls between 1.5ml and 1.6ml, but closer to 1.5ml, the digits you are confident in are 1 and 5. Therefore you estimate another digit which you think it could be such as 1.53ml. When making a digital measurement, the rule is to always write down every digit while understanding that the last digit is an estimation. There are also a few important differences between the course policy and the textbook. One is that the book states that if you place a $#$#0$#$# to the right of trailing zeroes, it would make those zeroes significant e.g. 500. has 3 significant figures while 500 has 1. This is not true and they should be ashamed. Another difference is in the convention of marking significant figures. In this course, Professor Halpin will underline all significant figures to identify them. It just makes it easier to get the correct answer while rounding to the correct number of significant figures. The book does not do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Ethical Issues In Huck Finn Throughout its history, Huck Finn has faced many controversies. It was shunned by many news outlets at the time of its writing for its subject matter, being called trash by many publications. It was even banned from some libraries for this reason. However, despite its flaws, Huck Finn proves to be an entertaining novel that offers an interesting look into pre Civil war America, and should be freely avaliable for all to read. Despite its inherent value as an examination of its time, many people had a problem with the manner in which it was portrayed. One of these apparent issues was noted by a censor of the Concord public library, who called into question the use of the dialect and grammatical style of the book. To quote the New York Herald, who were reporting on the situation, Another committeeman perused the volume with great care and discovered that it was couched in the language of a rough, ignorant dialect and that all through its pages there is a systematic use of bad grammar and an employment of inelegant expressions. These mannerisms, combined with other offenses, led to the book garnering a trashy reputation in the eyes of the censors, who quickly banned it from their library. however, to view these mannerisms as trashy and nothing more would be to misunderstand a large portion of the novel s appeal. This novel is a period piece, set in the south before the onset of the Civil War. In order to fully immerse the reader into this setting, Twain made sure to include all of the different dialects that a person in that setting might hear. As the Athenaeum deftly explains, (The characters are) schooled in half a dozen extraordinary dialects the Pike County dialect in all its forms, the dialect of the Missouri negro, and the extremest form of the backwoods South Western dialect, to wit. This makes the story and characters more entertaining, as it allows the reader to truly immerse themselves into the narrative. However, some would argue that this immersion isn t entertaining in it s own right. These people would say that, despite its the lengths it take to immerse you in its story, it s generally coarse nature would drive off anyone who would try to endure it for more than five minutes. • 34. Is Children’s Development a Universal Staged Process or a... Is Children s development a universal staged process or a social and cultural process? There are three main approaches to child development, the scientific, the social constructionist and the applied approach. Each of these approaches look at children s development from a different stand point. I will go on to explore each approach in turn and how they can help us answer the above question. The scientific approach to child development seeks to explain the facts about child development. It does this by devising theories which are then tested through observations and experiments. A classic example of this is Jean Piaget (1896 1890) who was one of the most influential theorists in child development. Piaget built up a theory about how ... These have also been different throughout history. For example in Victorian Britain, children were expected to work in the home, field, streets or in factories. Another example is, Maya s (U212 Video 1, band 1) experiences of childhood in the poor area Chittagong being different to the twins Yasir and Yamin s experiences in middle class Chittagong. Each have different expectations of their roles within society according to their social boundaries, gender, family and beliefs. Central to the social constructionist approach is the concept of competing discourses of childhood. A discourse is a particular way of thinking or a particular view point that is influenced by our gender, language, history, beliefs, experiences and social boundaries. There are numerous discourses but a romantic discourse sees children as inherently good; a child would only do terrible things if damaged in some way. Contrary to this is the puritanical discourse which sees the child as inherently evil, doing evil things because they are wicked and need punishing. Congress, industry, and national strategy all influence and affect the acquisition process. Mass producing the effectiveness of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle (MRAP) acquisition may tempt the amateur. However, although the unprecedented speed and strategic leader attention afforded the MRAP acquisition resulted in relative success, the process should not be used as a model for future acquisitions. The challenge of acquisition lays in difficult to define metrics, shifting policies, short term leadership, and its position of a complex system within a system. First, measuring success and failure proves elusive, making identifying meaningful change difficult. Perhaps because of this fact, the rules change rapidly. Since its inception in 1971, the Department of Defense Directive (DoDD) 5000 series has been revised more than a dozen times a change approximately once every three years. Well meaning and proactive defense secretaries institute changes and then leave office prior to institutionalization. Finally, due to the complexity of the system of systems involved, no single internal modification possesses the ability to maximize the acquisition process. These three factors alone make acquisition and acquisition reform a Sisyphean task. Some of the most famous heroes include Harry Potter, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. In greek mythology, Theseus, like Superman or Harry Potter, is also considered a hero. Theseus was the son of Poseidon who went to Athens to meet his supposed father, the king. In hopes of freeing him of his debt, he travels to Crete where Minos resided and killed the minotaur whom Aegeus was to feed 7 each of the most beautiful maidens and courageous men in his kingdom. Theseus is considered a hero for he possesses qualities of a hero and his/her journey. Theseus fits the hero archetype because he is clever, which means that he has situational intelligence; he is determined, which means that he is firmly set in opinion or purpose; and he has a supernatural helper, which is someone who aids the hero in his/her quest usually by providing them with a talisman or advice. Theseus is clever in that he is able to figure out a solution hastily given a situation. On his journey to Athens, Theseus encountered Sciron whom he had heard of as someone who fed passersby to his giant turtle. In the text, it states, When the giant kicked, Theseus pulled, dodging swiftly out of the way as the enormous body hurled over him, over and down, splashing the water cliff high as it hit (Evslin 153). In order to avoid being fed to the turtle, he used the giant s kick tactic against him and sent him hurling down into the water. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of Munch s first work that showed his notorious style can be seen in The Sick Child, 1886 painting just a year after Carrière s. His painting depicts his sister Sophie bedridden from Tuberculosis and his mother mourning beside her waiting for her to pass. He paints in a very melancholy tone and the color gives the viewer the impression of sickness and sorrow. He expresses his feelings years later describing how few have ever experienced the full grief of their subject as I did in The Sick Child. (qtd. in Prideaux 85 86). Munch s painterly style allows us to feel the anguish and pain he must have felt while painting The Sick Child. His process is also rather significant compared to the end product itself and provides clear insight into his emotional state whilst he painted. Munch not only painted with a brush but he chose to also use a palette knife for this particular painting to show the marks of visible misery, which can be seen with the scratchy and unfinished texture.
