Pilosa are a mammalian order that includes anteaters and sloths. They are found only in Central and South America today. Anteaters have specialized physical traits for eating ants and termites like long snouts, tongues and claws for digging. Sloths live in trees and move slowly. They have claws for hanging upside down and digesting leaves slowly with low metabolic rates. A study found sloths maintain near water balance and their low energy diets provide just enough energy to sustain their slow lifestyles with low and variable body temperatures.
