Why are insects so successful?
Skeleton
 Has an exoskeleton
 Skeleton outside the body
 Protects like armor
 Prevents loss of water
 Has many forms
 Allows survival in many
environments
Why are insects so successful?
Size
 Being small has
advantages
 Some need to be viewed
by microscope
 Live in places other
animals can’t live
Thrips are about 1 mm in length
Why are insects so successful?
Flight
 Insects can escape
enemies
 Inhabit new places
Why are insects so successful?
Metamorphosis
 Changing forms from
immature to adult
 Allows insects to utilize
different food resources
 Reduces competition for
food
Why are insects so successful?
Reproduction
 Insects produce big
numbers in a short time
 Lay lots of eggs
 Mature very rapidly
1. Name five reasons insects are so successful.
2. Name some reasons and benefits of the small size of
insects.
3. Research and writing Assignment:
1. Choose one of the four Early American Entomologists from the module.
2. Imagine you live during the time of this entomologist and write for the
newspaper.
3. Create an obituary in which you describe the highlights of the person’s life. Your
obituary should consist of two to three well constructed paragraphs.
4. You will need to do research outside the module to gather information for this
assignment.
5. Be sure to list the websites where you found your information.
Review 2
Arthropods
 Insects are part of this
larger group
 Named for jointed limbs
 Covered in exoskeleton
 Watch the video below
Arthropods are Insects
 Insects have 3 pairs of
legs
 Insects have 3 body
divisions
 Insects normally have
wings
Arthropods are spiders and mites
 Four pairs of legs
 No antennae
 No wings
Goliath Bird Eating
Spider
Arthropods are Crabs and Lobsters
 Three pairs of legs
 Two pairs of antennae
 No wings
The coconut crab
Arthropods are Millipedes and
Centipedes
 Many pairs of legs
 No antennae
Bad Reputation
 Many people view insects
as bad
 The bad “apples” spoil
the bunch
The five percent of insects
that:
 Destroy crops
 Destroy our possessions
 Act as nuisances
Big Picture
Insects provide benefits
directly to humans
Research subjects for:
 Medicine
 Genetics
 Basic biology
Produce valuable goods such
as:
 Honey
 Silk
This machine unwinds the
single strand that makes up a
cocoon
Big Picture
Insects greatly benefit
nature:
 Food source
 Pollinators of fruits and
vegetables
Insects play a leading role in
recycling of nutrients:
 Clean off road-kill
 Termites make dead wood
useable soil plants
Carrion beetles help
recycle dead animals
1. From the module you learned that insects benefit us in
many ways yet they can’t seem to escape their bad
reputation. Give some reasons why insects can’t avoid
their bad reputation.
2. Research/PPT Assignment: Silk is an important product
used in many ways and valued by many people. The silk
industry has an interesting history dating back thousands
of years to china.
1. Research the history of silk.
2. Create a PPT 7-8 slides about the history and uses of silk.
3. Be sure to list the websites where you found your
information.
