Blood type is determined by antigens on red blood cells and affects blood transfusion and pregnancy. There are 30 recognized blood group systems including ABO and RhESUS. ABO types are A, B, AB, and O based on carbohydrate antigens. RhESUS refers to the presence of the RhD antigen. Blood types must be compatible to prevent immune reaction during transfusion. Incompatible blood can cause hemolytic disease in newborns if a pregnant woman is sensitized to antigens of her fetus's blood.
