What factors
affect climate?
• Temperature
– Light energy = energy for
producers
– Heat energy = warm!
• Latitude
– If a region is closer to
the north or south pole,
it will be cooler
• Elevation
– Distance above
sea level
– As you move
higher, the air is
cooler because
the air is thinner
• Precipitation
– Rain shadow: when warm
air is forced up the side of
a mountain it cools and
condenses
– Rains only on one side of
the mountain
How is climate related to the land?
• Vegetation
• Animals
• Type of land and soil
What is a biome?
• Large geographic area that has:
– Similar climate
– Similar ecosystems
• similar organisms
• 6 common types on the planet:
– Tundra
– Taiga
– Temperate
deciduous
forest
– Tropical rain
forest
– Grassland
– Desert
How are biomes important to the
study of ecology?
• All things (living and non – living) are closely
related to their environment
• Animals and plants make special adaptations
to the biome
• Help humans understand their impact on a
certain environment
Where do we live?
• Tropical rain forest
• Savannah
(type of
grassland)|
