BIODIESEL
 It is alternative of conventional fuel.
 Transesterificaion process: chemical process which removes
the glycerine and converts the oil into methyl esters
(biodiesel).
 The values of physical properties of Jatropha methyl ester is
closely matched with conventional diesel.
 Operates in compression ignition engines thereby requiring no
essential engine modifications.

INTRODUCTION
 The concept dates back to 1885 when Dr. Rudolf Diesel
built the first diesel engine with the full intention of running it
on vegetative source.

History of Biodiesel
 To maintain ecosystem.
 Biodiesel blend as abbreviation Bxx in petroleum diesel.
 B100 = 100% biodiesel, B20 = 20%, B5 = 5%.
 Generally used B20 i.e. 20% biodiesel blended with diesel.
 Reduce the countries dependence on foreign oil imports.

Why we need Biodiesel
The Jatropha is generally cultivated for the purpose of extracting
Jatropha oil.
The oil content is 25-30% in the seed.

Biodiesel – A better fuel vs. Diesel
 Local & self production – less reliance on foreign oil.
 Biodiesel produces 78% less CO2 than petroleum diesel fuel.
 It helps to lubricate the engine itself, decreasing engine wear.
 Used in any almost diesel with little or no engine
modification.
 Contains practically no sulfur (0.001%) .

Advantages of Biodiesel:-
 Corrosive to rubber materials.
 Increases NOx in at atmosphere.
 Can last up to 6 months.
 Cost varies according to feedstock used and market conditions.

Biodiesel Disadvantage
Source :-AMPRI, Bhopal (year-2008)
Planting: Seeds planted at a distance of 2m x 1.5m.
 About 2000 plants/ ha.
Yield: 0.4T/ha/yr after 2-3 years and 2.5- 3T/ha/yr after
5years.
Return-3.00 T/ha/yr x Rs. 6/Kg = Rs. 18000/ha/yr.
Capacity-400 L/ day.
Production cost-Rs 30/- = Litre (one litre diesel from 3 Kg of
seed) . 14
Cost Estimation:-
 By mixing of 20 % biodiesel with diesel will help India to
save 7.3× 106 tones of diesel per year.
 In India about 33 million hectares of wasteland is available
and can be used for cultivation of jatropha plants.
 By installing the developed pilot biodiesel plant at each district,
dependence on diesel fuel for farm operations can be reduced.

  • 3.  It is alternative of conventional fuel.  Transesterificaion process: chemical process which removes the glycerine and converts the oil into methyl esters (biodiesel).  The values of physical properties of Jatropha methyl ester is closely matched with conventional diesel.  Operates in compression ignition engines thereby requiring no essential engine modifications. 3 INTRODUCTION
  • 4.  The concept dates back to 1885 when Dr. Rudolf Diesel built the first diesel engine with the full intention of running it on vegetative source. 4 History of Biodiesel
  • 5.  To maintain ecosystem.  Biodiesel blend as abbreviation Bxx in petroleum diesel.  B100 = 100% biodiesel, B20 = 20%, B5 = 5%.  Generally used B20 i.e. 20% biodiesel blended with diesel.  Reduce the countries dependence on foreign oil imports. 5 Why we need Biodiesel
  • 6. The Jatropha is generally cultivated for the purpose of extracting Jatropha oil. The oil content is 25-30% in the seed. Chemical compositions:- 6 Moisture 6.20% Protein 18.00% Fat 38.00% Carbohydrates 17.00% Fiber 15.50% Ash 5.30% Source of Jatropha Oil

  • 12.  Local & self production – less reliance on foreign oil.  Biodiesel produces 78% less CO2 than petroleum diesel fuel.  It helps to lubricate the engine itself, decreasing engine wear.  Used in any almost diesel with little or no engine modification.  Contains practically no sulfur (0.001%) . 12 Advantages of Biodiesel:-
  • 13.  Corrosive to rubber materials.  Increases NOx in at atmosphere.  Can last up to 6 months.  Cost varies according to feedstock used and market conditions. 13 Biodiesel Disadvantage
  • 14. Source :-AMPRI, Bhopal (year-2008) Planting: Seeds planted at a distance of 2m x 1.5m.  About 2000 plants/ ha. Yield: 0.4T/ha/yr after 2-3 years and 2.5- 3T/ha/yr after 5years. Return-3.00 T/ha/yr x Rs. 6/Kg = Rs. 18000/ha/yr. Capacity-400 L/ day. Production cost-Rs 30/- = Litre (one litre diesel from 3 Kg of seed) . 14 Cost Estimation:-
  • 15.  By mixing of 20 % biodiesel with diesel will help India to save 7.3× 106 tones of diesel per year.  In India about 33 million hectares of wasteland is available and can be used for cultivation of jatropha plants.  By installing the developed pilot biodiesel plant at each district, dependence on diesel fuel for farm operations can be reduced. 15 Conclusion
