Bdellovibrio is a small, Gram-negative bacterium that exists as both an independent rod shape and as a parasite of other Gram-negative bacteria. It was first described in 1963 and lives in oceans, freshwater, soil and the intestines of mammals. Bdellovibrio has a two stage life cycle - an attack phase where it seeks out and attaches to prey bacteria using flagella and pili, and a growth phase where it enters the prey and digests its contents from inside, eventually bursting out to find new prey. Research on Bdellovibrio focuses on its potential applications as a treatment for bacterial infections and biofilms.
