VIRAL DISEASES OF PADDY
Athira.B
1ST M.sc Applied Microbiology
PLANT VIRUS
• Plants have specific viruses
• Viruses cause many plant diseases
• They are responsible for losses in crop yield and quality
• Viroids are infectious RNAs that cause important plant diseases
• These pathogens are similar to some plant viruses in that they contain an RNA genome
• They differ from RNA plants viruses that theyare composed of naked RNAs and lack a
protein coat
• Viroids donot produce any proteins when they infect a plant cell despite the fact that they are
made of RNA
PLANT VIRUSES (CONTD….)
• Obligate intracellular parasites
• Donot have the molecular machinery to replicate without a host
• Pathogenic to higher plants
• Plant viruses infect plants
• A virus particle, also known as virion is an extremely small infectious agent
• Essentially a nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) enclosed in a protein coat called capsid
VIRAL DISEASES OF PADDY
1. Rice Tungro Disease (RTD)
❖ Viruses causing this disease
- Rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV)
- Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV)
❖ SYMPTOMS
- Infections occurs both in the nursery and main field
- plants are markedly stunded
- Leaves show yellow to orange discoloration and interveinal chlorosis
- young leaves are sometimes mottled while rusty spots appear on older leaves
- Panicles not formed in very early infection,if formed remain small with few, deformed and
chaffy grains
❖PATHOGEN
- Two morphologically unrelated viruses present in phloem cells
- RTBV (bacilliform capsid, circular dsDNA genome)
- RTSV (isometric capsid ss RNA genome)
VIRAL DISEASES OF PADDY (CONTD..)
❖TRANSMISSION :-
-mainly by LEAF HOPPER VECTOR Nephotteix visescens male and female and nymphs of the
insect can transmit the disease
❖ MANAGEMENT:-
- Field sanitation, removal of weed hosts of the virus and vectors
- Grow disease tolerant cultivars like pankhari203,BM66,BM68,Latisail,Kamod253
- Control the vectors in the nursery by application of carbofuran 170g/cent 10 days
after showing to control hoppers
- Spray phosphomidan or monocrotophos or neem oil to control the vector in the main field 15
and 30 days after transplanting
- Set up light traps to monitor the vector population
2. RICE GRASSY STUNT DISEASE
▪ Virus :- Rice grassy stunt tenuivirus
SYMPTOMS:-
▪ Plants are marked stunded with excessive tillering and an erect growth habit
▪ Leaves become narrow, pale green with small rusty spots
▪ May produce a few small panicles which bear dark brown unfilled grains
PATHOGEN :-
▪ Rice grassy stunt tenuivirus, flexous, filamentous,ssRNA genome
DISEASE CYCLE
▪ Disease spread by the brown plant hopper,Nilaparvata lugens in a persisitant manner having
a latent period of 5 to 28 days in the vector
▪ Ratoon crop and presence of vector perpetuate the disease from one crop to another
3. RICE DWARF
• Virus :- Rice dwarf virus
SYMPTOMS
• Infected plants show stunded growth, reduced tillering and root system
• Leaves show chlorotic specks turning to streaks along the veins
• In early stage of the infection ear heads formed
PATHOGEN
• The virus is spherical,70nm diameter with an envelop, dsRNA genome
DISEASE CYCLE
• Spread by leafhopper feeding by Nephotelix cincticeps,Relica dorsalis and N.nigropictus ina a persistent
manner.
• The transmission is transoviral through eggs
MANAGEMENT
• Destroy weed host that serve as a source of inoculum
• Spray phosphamidon or Fenthinon or Monocrotophos
4.RICE RAGGED STUNT DISEASE
• Virus :- Rice ragged stunt virus
SYMPTOMS
• Formation of ragged leaves with irregular
margins, vein swelling, enations on leaf veins may be
formed
• Stunting of plants,delayed flowering,production of
nodal branches and incomplete emergence of panicles
PATHOGEN
• Spherical virus (Figivirus),dsRNA genome
DISEASE CYCLE
• Spread through brown planthopper,Nilaparvata lugens
transmitted in a persistent manner
• Multiples in the vector ,latent period of 3 to 35 days
but not transmitted congenitally
5.RICE YELLOW DWARF DISEASE
• Virus :- Rice yellow dwarf virus
SYMPTOMS
• Prominent stunning of plants and excessive tillering are the characteristic symptoms of the
disease.
• Leaves yellowish green to whitish green, become soft and droop
• Plants usually remain sterile but sometimes may produce small panicles with unfilled grains
PATHOGEN
• Caused by a phytoplasma(rice yellow dwarf phytoplasma designated as a novel taxon,
‘candidatus phytoplasma oryzae’)
DISEASE CYCLE
• The disease is transmitted by leafhopper vectors Nephotettix sp.Nephotettix with a latent
period of 25-30 days in the vector
• The pathogen survive on several grass weeds
RICE YELLOW DWARF DISEASE (CONTD…)
MANAGEMENT
• Deep ploughing during summer monthsand burning of stubbles
• Rice varieties IR62 and IR64 are moderately resistant to the disease
• The management practices followed for Rice Tungro disease holds good for this disease
