Biochemistry is the study of chemical and physical processes within living organisms. It examines the role of water, which makes up 60-90% of organisms and is essential for most reactions. While cells are mostly water, the remaining components are carbon-based molecules studied in organic chemistry. These organic molecules have unique 3D shapes that determine their functions. Large molecules called polymers are made of smaller repeating units called monomers, including macromolecules important to biologists like proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids.
