Audience survey analysis
Question 1 Analysis
I asked this question to get a general
overview of who my target audience will be.
These results show that more readers of
music magazines are female than male,
showing me that my primary audience is
going to be female, with males as a
secondary audience. Therefore, I will need to
market the content of my magazine towards
females, by including female artists, and
articles that they would enjoy. However, as I
also had quite a large response from males, I
need to take them into consideration, and
not alienate them with the content that I
include. I’ll use neutral colours that don’t
have gendered connotations in order to
appeal to both genders. I’ll also ask in my
interviews to find out what content each
specific gender would like to see.
Question 2 Analysis
I asked this question to find out the age range of
my target audience. 70% of the responses came
from people between the ages of 15 and 18,
showing that the main demographic of my
magazine will be young people. I will need to aim
my layout and content towards them. The cover
will need to have a youthful look in order to attract
young people to reading it, including bright colours
and lots of information. The articles included will
need to be about young artists in order to appeal
to the young target audience, as they’ll be able to
relate to them more. The language used will be
more informal, as they would want to read the
magazine for fun rather than it seeming like a text
for school.
Question 3 Analysis
I asked this question to find out how often
people buy magazines in order to see how much
information I will need to include in my
magazines. These responses show me that very
few people regularly buy magazines. The
majority of the responses come from people
who buy magazines yearly, with people who buy
magazines monthly coming second. If the
audience don’t buy magazines frequently, they’ll
miss out on a lot of the information that is in
magazines that are published frequently.
Therefore, I will need to include lots of
information in my magazine to ensure that the
people who don’t buy magazines frequently can
still get lots of information.
Question 4 Analysis
I asked this question in order to find out how much
I would need to charge for my magazine in order to
have a larger audience buy it. The results show
that most people would prefer to pay less for a
magazine, choosing the “£2.01-£3” option.
However, just over a quarter of responses are for
“£3.01-£4”, so people are willing to pay more. This
would probably be more likely if the magazine was
full of lots of information, making it worth the
money that the reader would be paying. For my
magazine, I need to make it good value for money.
The price needs to be around £3 in order to get
more interest from an audience, and the content
needs to be worth the money that they’re paying.
Question 5 Analysis
I asked this question to find out what genres of
music are most popular, and therefore which genres
to base my magazine around. Indie/alternative and
rock got the largest response, however pop was very
close behind. Therefore, the magazine that I make
needs to include all of these genres in order to
appeal to a larger audience. From this, I decided that
my magazine will be more in the style of Q, which
includes a variety of genres rather than focusing on
one in order to interest more readers, and to cater
to everybody.
Question 6 Analysis
I wanted to ask this question in order to find out the
type of magazines that my audience read already.
Most of them read Kerrang and NME, which ties in
with the fact that most of the responses were from
younger people, as these are the magazines that are
aimed at their age range. Q also received quite a
few responses. NME and Q are similar in that they
both contain artists from a variety of genres,
showing me that lots of readers like magazines
which include multiple genres, rather than having a
focus on just one. This is what I’ll do for my
magazine.

Question 7 Analysis
I asked this question in order to get a selection of artists that my audience likes. This allows me to see
who they would like to be featured, so that I can include this in my magazine, but also the genres that
are the most common in the results. From the relevant results, I found that my audience are interested
in artists from a variety of genres, ranging from pop artists like Taylor Swift, to punk artists like Green
Day. This solidifies the idea that my magazine needs to include a variety of genres, as the readers are
interested in a variety of genres, and I want them to all have relevant articles. Some responses even
include a variety of genres within one answer. In order to appeal to all of the readers, I will make the
magazine in a similar style to Q, by including articles about a variety of artists and genres.
Question 8 Analysis
I asked this question so that I could find out what
kind of content I should include in my magazine. I
found that most people would like to see interviews,
therefore this will be a major part of my magazine.
For my double page spread, I could do an interview. I
also found that a lot of people like to see event
information and reviews, as well as news about
artists. News about unknown artists is preferred, but
people still enjoy articles about well known artists. I
can include all of this in my magazine in order to
appeal to a wider audience. Fewer people were
interested in competitions, free gifts or posters, so I
won’t include these as a major part of my magazine.
However, as they did get responses, I will include
them as a minor part of the magazine, possibly as
subheadings on the cover.
Question 9 Analysis
I asked this question as promotions are often used
to persuade people to purchase the magazine. If
the reader sees a promotion that interests them,
they may be more likely to buy the magazine. I
wanted to find out which promotions people like
to see, so that I knew which to include in my
magazine. I found that an overwhelming amount
of people wanted to see gig and festival ticket
discounts, so this is something that I’ll definitely
include in my magazine. The other options were
fairly even in responses. On question 8, a free CD
received less responses, and it got the least
responses on this question, so I won’t include a
free CD. However, I may include a few discounts as
people chose all of these.
Question 10 Analysis
I asked this question in order to find out how the
cover design affects how likely the readers are to
purchase the magazine. I found out that most people
are influenced to purchase the magazine by the main
image on the cover, and who it is of. Bold and bright
colours also received high votes, so I’m going to
include these on my cover. Catchy headlines and
graphic art were close behind in responses, so I need
to try to include these. The responses show that
more people preferred a clean, minimalistic layout to
a busy layout, so I will try to have a cover design
similar to Q magazine than Kerrang. Adverts for
promotions received a lower response, so, while
people did respond well to the inclusion of
promotions, they aren’t wanted on the cover, so I
will include them inside the magazine instead.
