- The survey showed that most respondents were between 16-19 years old, so the magazine should target that age range.
- There was a near even split between male and female respondents, so the magazine should appeal to both genders.
- Indie music was the most popular music genre, but many genres were cited as favorites, so the magazine could focus on either indie music or multiple genres.
- Most respondents said they hardly ever or never buy magazines currently available, so the new magazine should differentiate itself from existing options.
- Interviews were the most popular type of content, so the magazine should feature artist interviews.
- Respondents were interested in both downloading music online and buying albums, so the

When does spring start? Gardening category trendsKimberley Evans
Every year as gardening brands start building their marketing plans they face an important question: Does Spring start at different times in different UK regions? By using the transactional information available on the Abacus Alliance to analyse purchasing patterns in the January to May period of 2013, 2014 and 2015, we found that there isn’t a North/South divide in when consumers start buying gardening products. However, there is a difference between urban and rural areas, with customers who live in or around major UK cities purchasing later in the season. It is possible that this “urban delay” is linked to urban customers selecting ready-to-plant products over seeds and bulbs.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Question One - Age
The first question was ‘What is your age?’ As the screenshot
shows the most common age out of the people that took part
in my survey was between 16-19. This suggests to me that
when I create my magazine I will be aiming to target aged 16-
19 year olds rather than older adults. This is because this age
range was the most interested in taking part in my survey that
was about music magazines. Using this I now know that I will
have to use codes and conventions in my magazine that is
suitable for this age range.
3. Question Two -
Gender
This question identifies that there was a near enough
50/50 gender split that took part in my survey. Using
this data, I know that both genders are interested in
music magazines and therefore the audience of my
magazine will consist of both genders. I will have to
make my magazine suitable for both genders and not
make the magazine biased towards one gender than
the other. The result that slightly more men took part
in this survey reflects the readership of other
magazines where men are the main audience.
4. Question Three - Music Genre
There was many different genres that were picked as the
participants favourite type of music genre. The one that
seemed to be most popular was indie music. This tells me that
indie music is generally the most popular music genre among
young people and I could create my magazine to be just based
on indie music. However because of the many different genres
of music listed as participants favourite type of music, I could
also make my magazine be based on a number of genres, this
would make the audience and readership of my magazine
bigger.
5. Question Four - How Often Magazines Are Bought
People that answered my survey either said they
bought magazines monthly, hardly ever or they never
bought them. The hardly ever option got the most
responses. This suggests to me that the audience don’t
like any of the available music magazines. Therefore I
can take this into account and incorpret this into my
ideas by making my music magazine different from
others out there. This would make it stand out and be
unique. It needs to be a magazine that isn’t already in
the market, therefore it also attracts readers that don’t
already read magazines.
6. Question Five - Content
Question five asked people what was their favourite
content was in a magazine. The results were that
interviews were rated as the most popular content in
magazines, I can use this when I create my magazine.
My double page spread can include an interview of
an artist of a chosen genre. Therefore this is
incorporating the audience’s best interests into the
magazine.
7. Question 6 – How do you listen to your music
This tells me that the some audience prefer to
download online and some prefer to buy the
album. However the majority of people said they
would do both. Therefore, when I am creating my
magazine I can include offers (as a selling point) on
either of the options. For example the magazine
could offer so many songs to download for free and
it could also offer a percentage off a album. Doing
this caters for both audiences.
I’d prefer to
download
online
I’d prefer
to buy the
album
I’d do both
8. Question 7 – Favourite magazines
The most popular magazine was Q. This can be useful
as it tells me that this is the most popular magazine
among the audience and I can use Q magazine to help
base my magazine around. For example I can get ideas
and inspiration from Q magazine and include them into
mine. By doing this is will help me target my audience
accurately and be suitable. It will enable me to attract
as many readers as I possibly can.
9. Question 8 - Price
People that took part in my survey rated
£3.00 - £3.99 as the price they would pay
for a magazine. This helps me base the
price of my magazine to a suitable price
and it will make the audience more likely
to purchase the magazine if it’s a suitable
price.
10. Question 9 - If you don't
read magazines, what
would convince you to
read magazines?
This question gave participants the chance to
write down what would convince them to
read magazines. The results were that a lot of
people put ‘freebies’ would persuade them to
buy a magazine. This is a great selling point
that would attract the audiences attention and
make them feel like they are getting more for
their money, it might also persuade the
audience to buy the magazine as the freebie
might be something the audience wants to
have therefore they might buy the magazine
in order to get the free item.
Competitions and quizzes are another thing
that the audience said would make them buy
a magazine. This give the reader something to
do in their spare time and as a result make the
magazine more enjoyable and worth while.
Gossip about celebrities was another thing
that would persuade people to buy a
magazine. This may be because the audience
will feel like they are closer to the celebrities
and more involved in their lives.
11. Question 10 – What makes a magazine
appealing?
The last question asked people what makes a magazine appeal to them. The
majority of feed back was that the front cover, vibrant colours and the images used
were the most important things when it came to making a magazine appealing.
This helps me because I know that I need to make the appearance on the magazine
look good, unique and different so it draws in the audience. The images need to be
appropriate to the content of the magazine. Also the images need to be of artists
and things that will attract the audience and interest them, so they will purchase
the magazine and want to read it. The front cover needs look unique and consist of
colours that match well together so the theme looks smart but also vibrant and not
boring. The audience are young people therefore the front cover needs to be lively
not dull.
