2. Summary of Questionnaire
Before designing my magazine for the main task, I put together a
questionnaire relevant to my design ideas and music genre and asked my
target audience to answer the questions. I used SurveyMonkey to create a
questionnaire of 10 questions about the audience, their preferences regarding
purchases, freebies and music and also design ideas.
I published this questionnaire on my social media networks and asked some
people that I know to fill in the survey; in total I gathered 28 responses which
I can analyse as a whole.
The purpose of this questionnaire which I have created is to understand more
about my target audience and so that I design and produce a magazine which
is suitable to them and meet their expectations as well as follow
magazine/genre conventions throughout my work.
3. Question 1 Analysis
The first question I asked
in my survey was whether
the person is male or
female. The results show
that 71.43% of the people
who did my survey are
female, whereas only
28.57% were male. This
result may affect the
following questions and
responses due to
stereotypical gender
preferences.
4. Question 2 Analysis
The second question asked to the people completing my survey was their age.
This is a multiple choice question rather than specific ages therefore the
results show the age groups rather than individual years. The result of this
question shows that the majority of people completing my survey (88.89%)
were aged between 16-21. This is good because 16-21 is the age group that I
am targeting my magazine towards the most. Only 3.70% of people answering
the survey were aged between 22-27, and 7.41% were aged above 28. These
results may effect answers due to different generations and preferences due
to interests that are effected by age.
5. Question 3 Analysis
Question 3 asked how often does
my audience read magazines.
The results show that not one
person who answered reads
magazines either every day of
even a few times a week. The
majority of the audience reads
magazines less than once a
month (42.86%) followed by a
few times a month (32.14%). 25%
of the people who answered my
survey said that they never read
magazines. This tells me that I
should not produce a weekly
magazine, and would be more
appropriate to release a monthly
or even seasonal magazine to
suit my audience’s interests and
meet the likelihood of them
reading/buying it.
6. Question 4 Analysis
The fourth question I asked in my survey was what is your favourite music
genre from the list below. As this was a multiple choice question, I listed 7
different music genres which my audience could choose from. The results
show that the most popular genre is acoustic/alternative as 46.43% of people
chose this genre. The least popular genre was electronic, with no responses.
As acoustic/alternative was the most popular choice, I will base my magazine
on this genre because it will appeal to my target audience.
7. Question 5 Analysis
Question 5 asks my audience
how much they would be willing
to pay for a music magazine.
The results to this question give
me an accurate indication of
what to price my music
magazine when designing it. The
responses show that the
majority would pay between £1
and £2.50, therefore I will price
my magazine somewhere
between these figures. Nobody
was willing to pay more than £4
and only a few would pay less
than £1 or nothing at all.
8. Question 6 Analysis
The sixth question in my survey
asked my audience what
freebies/offers would they
expect to see in a music
magazine. This question did not
provide multiple choice answers,
instead the audience could write
what they want. The results give
a variety of answers, including
iTunes codes, concert tickets,
vouchers, posters, CD’s,
merchandise and free
downloads. I will take into
consideration all of these
responses and try to incorporate
them into my magazine to meet
their needs and expectations.
9. Question 7 Analysis
The seventh question I asked was out of the choices below, which do you like
best for the name of a music magazine. This was a multiple choice question
therefore I gave my audience a list of 4 possible names for my magazine
which would then give me an indication of what name would be most
suitable, effective and popular. The results show that the name “Phonics” is
the most popular, therefore this is what I will name my magazine.
10. Question 8 Analysis
This question is regarding the use of
convergence in my magazine. The
question is what multi-media formats do
you expect to be advertised in magazine
brands (websites, apps etc.). This
question was not multiple choice
answers, so the audience answering
could write what they wanted to. The
results show that many of the people
asked would expect to see apps,
websites and social media pages. As a
result of these answers, I will include
some uses of convergence within my
magazine design such as a web address
and links to social media pages.
11. Question 9 Analysis
The ninth question I asked my audience was about how many pages they think
a music magazine should have. The results were quite even; there was no
dominant response/preference to page numbers. Therefore, I will probably
number about 50 pages to my magazine in the contents page which will be
subdivided into a regular section, features of the issue and a live section.
35.71% of people thought that a music magazine should have either 11-20
pages or 21-30 pages and 28.57% thought that a music magazine should
contain more than 30 pages.
12. Question 10 Analysis
The final question that I
asked in this questionnaire
was which of the following
colour combinations/pallets
do you prefer for a magazine.
I asked this question so that I
could design my magazine
using colours that would most
appeal to my target
audience. The results show
that the most popular choice
was black, white and grey
(42.86%) followed by black,
white and blue (25%)
therefore it is likely that I
will use these colours the
most in my magazine, with
consideration to the other
responses as well.
