Audience Profile – Genre: Metal/ Alt. Metal
Target Audience:
Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities)
and why
The denotation of the target audience for my new Metal and Alt.
Metal (Most metal bands have main inspirations and genres that
they use) magazine is going to be aged 15-40(Hartley) and from
the male gender because this is the majority of the audience,
though there is a sizable female audience (roughly 40-30%, though
they are less gig active). I will appeal to this target audience by
including promotional strategies on my front cover. For example a
chance to win gig tickets, posters and merchandise. The notion
that there is a chance to win these for ‘free’ will cause them to
purchase the magazine. Merchandise has a greater important to
the metal genre. I believe my magazine appeals mostly to males, as
metal is seen as stereotypically masculine.
Socio-Economic Needs and why:
I believe that my magazine will appeal to those in E, D and C2
categories. This is because a majority audience of metal are from
the working class, or of a similar income bracket so there is not
much disposable income to place them in another category.
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
Using Katz uses and gratifications theory the audience can be
‘informed and educated’ about the latest artists, future releases,
albums and gigs. In regards to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, the
magazine assists with creating a sense of belonging and identity.
Stereotype(s):
Dark clothes, long hair, piercings, tattoos, goes to gigs and festivals,
wears merchandise often. Alternative clothing. Smoking.
