This document discusses planning for a music magazine, including defining the target audience. Several target age ranges, genders, and socioeconomic classes are proposed. Weekly publication is suggested to keep customers engaged. Sample magazine titles are provided. The intended audiences are analyzed using Maslow's hierarchy of needs and psychographic segmentation to understand their motivations and interests. The document also discusses setting an appropriate price point based on the target audience's spending power.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

7. In addition to this, I have also targeted this
age range as these teenagers want access to
possible music festival dates which they
could go to which can both benefit the
consumer and the music magazine itself in
the sense that we (the music magazine) are
providing legitimate music festival dates to
the consumer who might want to start
regularly buy more of this issue.
The music magazine that I will be creating will be
published once a week and the reason for this will be to
keep the customers of my magazine content with my
magazine which gives them the latest ins and outs of
the music industry for example: gossip, interviews,
festival dates. In addition to this, I am publishing my
magazine once a week as it is a constant regular basis
which will help potential customers to be lured to my
magazine if they want regular content which gives you
standard updates on the music industry.
The News of Music is my first title I will
be talking about within this document
and the reason I have pondered about
using this as my music magazine title
as my magazine as it matches the
content that will be in my music
magazine (updates and information
within the music industry).
8. We have decided that our music magazine will be published
once a week and the reason for this will be to keep the
customers of my magazine content with my magazine which
gives them the latest ins and outs of the music industry for
example: gossip, interviews, festival dates. In addition to
this, I am publishing my magazine once a week as it is a
constant regular basis which will help potential customers to
be lured to my magazine if they want regular content which
gives you standard updates on the music industry.
The denotation target age demographic is the and the
main reason for this is the valid feedback I had received
from the general public who were within this age range
and wanted a music magazine that fitted the criteria of:
interviews with famous pop stars, possible occurrences
in their life (gossip) and festival dates.
In addition to this, I have also targeted
this age range as these teenagers
want access to possible music festival
dates which they could go to which can
both benefit the consumer and the
music magazine itself in the sense that
we (the music magazine) are providing
legitimate music festival dates to the
consumer who might want to start
regularly buy more of this issue.
9. Target Audience
• As you can see the socio economic
groups made it simplistic for us to
choose what group our Music Magazine
will be based around. The results from
this table established that C2 & D were
our chosen groups and therefore based
our market around the socio economic
group that we have chosen and this will
help us increase the demand for our
Music Magazine.
• As we were thinking about the target
audience/demographic for our music
magazine we needed to make sure that
our target audience is healthy and
active in the sense that it will be easy
for us to advertise and promote our
music magazine to the local
demographic that we have chosen.
10. Target Audience
• Hartley's 7 subjectivities are as follows: Age, Gender, Class, Ethnicity. Self-Image,
Nation & Family.
• Firstly the age of my magazine will be in much similarity than to our Music Magazine of
inspiration which is Clash Music magazine in which their age for their magazine is
based around teenagers from the age of 13-18, this is truly down to the content that is
within this magazine and the age range can be hugely beneficial/detrimental towards
the future and secureness of Clash Music Magazine.
• Secondly the gender of my magazine will openly be viable for both Male & Female in
the sense that it is our idea that our music magazine will hopefully be appealing to both
Male & Female as there are contents which is based on the best interests of our
demographics.
• Next, the socio economic class that this music magazine will target itself within will be
a combination a C2 & D socio economic class in which these two classes are student
related classes & people within the C2 class who listen to music on a regular basis.
Moreover these two socio economic classes will be used within this Music Magazine
will be determined on the chosen content used on my Music Magazine.
11. Target Audience
• The Hartley’s seven subjectivities are Age, Gender, Class, Ethnicity, Self-Image,
Nation & Family.
• For the second idea of my music magazine, I would assume that the specific target
audience is based on bands and main fans of music which would be aimed from the
ages of 17-30 and this would also be appealing to both genders (Male + Female).
• Secondly, the gender for my Indie style music magazine will be both suitably available
for both Male & Females as this Indie style music magazines which would be suitable
for the target as they would either get weekly updates within the content, or fortnightly
releases of the indie music magazine which would inform and educate the target
audience about the on goings within the music industry.
• The socio economic class that this second choice music magazine will categorise itself
from within I believe will be another combination, however this time being C1 & C2 in
the socio economic needs. Furthermore C1 & C2 mainly means working class people
who normally work in the office who enjoy their music on a regular basis to a point
where they want to further extend their knowledge of music.
12. Intended Target Audience
• The socio economic needs category that we will be used for my chosen music
magazine will be category D.
• Social Need D is one of the two social needs that my intended target audience will be
used for my music magazine, the base of Social Need D are unskilled manual workers
who will want to expand their knowledge on music. We chose this predominantly in
order to gain mass number of views as they are thousands upon thousands of music
students in the UK.
• As you can see, I have only chosen one category and this is solely down to the mass
number of students who would buy our music magazine which may be due to their
interest, or to further enhance their knowledge.
13. Intended Target Audience
• Therefore, we will need
to set the price right and
we know we have got the
price bang on right as we
carried out primary
research to find this.
• Spending power can
prove to be significant for
us as customers may feel
less inclined to purchase
our music magazine if
they feel that the prices
of our magazines are an
anomaly in contrast to
similar genre based
music magazines.
14. Intended Target Audience
• Hartley's 7 subjectivities are as follows: Age, Gender, Class, Ethnicity. Self-Image,
Nation & Family.
• Firstly the age range of our music magazine will be determined by our music magazine
of inspiration which is Clash Music Magazine, If we failed to do this it could be
potentially damaging as we would produce very minor sales.
15. Intended Target Audience
• The stat above me is staggering that it is there all time high and sales could not be
better.
• Secondly the gender of my magazine will openly be buyable for both male and female
students, as we need to broaden our intended target audience as far as possible in
order to produce mass sales.
16. Target Audience

18. Target Audience (Maslow’s
Hierarchy of Needs)
• Source: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/04/26/designing-for-a-hierarchy-of-
needs/
• Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs is a theory which suggests that there are 5 stages people
go through in life & the theory states that each stage we have different motivation that
drives us through. If we then apply these stages to media, we can then use them to try
and understand the motivations behind our target audience.
• (Functional.) In relation to Clash Music Magazine, the target audience must be able to
work before anything else so that your target audience needs to be realistic in terms of
matching your content.
• (Reliability) Now that Clash Music Magazine have established themselves as they
have been around for around a decade now, they must be reliable with their target
audience and their content in the sense that they can’t chop and chance whenever
they like, they could in the short term i.e. 6-12 months but they must plan this out and
make sure the new target audience and new content will work together agreeably.
19. Target Audience (Maslow’s
Hierarchy of Needs)
• Source: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/04/26/designing-for-a-hierarchy-of-
needs/
• (Usability) The usability of Clash’s Music Magazine regardless the issue is easy, it is
not dependable on the creators and editors of their music magazine as it is not very
difficult to navigate your way through a music magazine to find the pages that you
want to. For example the contents page is a fantastic example on to guide the reader
on what pages they want to specifically read about.
• (Profitability) Clash’s Music Magazine enables the readers of the music magazine to
not only allow them to read it but also find out information about upcoming issues of
Clash’s Music Magazine & artists who could potentially feature on the front cover and
double page spread of those upcoming issues.
20. Target Audience (Psychographics)
• This can easily be defined as what divides the market into groups which is based on
the personality characteristics. This is also based on the assumption that the products
and the brands will also reflect that persons characteristics and patters on living life.
21. Target Audience (Psychographics)
• Source: http://www.magazine.org/psychographic-profile-magazine-
audiences-investigation-medias-climate
• Smash Music Magazine’s target audience in reference to the
psychographics will mainly have interests hobbies and beliefs that
most people within the pop genre for psychographics would normally
have. Additionally, the normal interests that the average person who
would read Smash Music Magazine would all have similar
psychographics and personalities to another person who reads our
magazine.
• Moreover the main hobbies that someone who would read Smash
Music Magazine would be Sports, Clothing, Photography & Fashion,
also the main readership are people who believe that you should look
up to somebody else having a role mode and that everything in
existence resolves around their personal status.
We chose this predominantly in

students in the UK.
• As you can see, I have only chosen one category and this is solely down to the mass
number of students who would buy our music magazine which may be due to their
interest, or to further enhance their knowledge.
24. Intended Target Audience
• Definition: Psychographic segmentation can be defined as when you divide the
market into groups based on social class, lifestyle and personality characteristics. It
also can be based on the assumption that the types of products and brands an
individual purchases will reflect that persons characteristics and patterns of living.
• The spending power of the reader in terms of the cost of our music could be
dependent on the sales we make per week, per month or even per year.
25. Intended Target Audience
• Therefore, we will need
to set the price right and
we know we have got the
price bang on right as we
carried out primary
research to find this.
• Spending power can
prove to be significant for
us as customers may feel
less inclined to purchase
our music magazine if
they feel that the prices
of our magazines are an
anomaly in contrast to
similar genre based
music magazines.
27. Intended Target Audience
• The stat above me is staggering that it is there all time high and sales could not be
better.
• Secondly the gender of my magazine will openly be buyable for both male and female
students, as we need to broaden our intended target audience as far as possible in
order to produce mass sales.
28. Demographics
• The reason was that we strongly feel that there is a gap in the market for a popular
music magazine. Furthermore it is also very simple to advertise as you can relate pop
music magazines to both genders.
• In order to make sure that we are competing with other high level magazines in our
genre we must allow our potential customers to keep updated with our magazine and
this will be done through Twitter & Facebook
29. Demographics
• Throughout primary research, I have found out that the intended target audience is
ages between 13-18.
• We have studied the socio economic needs and come to the conclusion that our target
audience will be C2 & D which are skilled and unskilled workers.
30. Mind Map
Price: £1.50,
£2.00 & £2.50
Monthly: My Magazine could
be released on a monthly basis
as there would be more
content than a weekly basis,
and therefore would attract
more readers.
Weekly: My Magazine could
also be released on a weekly
basis as it would be a quick
service for the customers and
therefore could provide more
customers.
My Target Audience can
be applicable for my
music magazine in
similarity as this would
allow me to acknowledge
and understand the price
& the frequency of their
magazine in sync with
their content and target
audience.
31. How does it appeal to the
viewers/readership?
• An Indie style genre based music magazine would definitely appeal to casual music
fans, and most appealing to hard-core music (Indie genre based) fans, my music
magazine would also be appealing to the viewers/readership as it would give them a
solid service in which we would gain money from the sales and in which the
customers/viewers/readership would gain top quality content which would inform them
about the music industry.
32. How does it appeal to the
viewers/readership?
• My Music Magazine appeals to the viewers/readership in the sense that the
content of the stories are suitable for the target age range which is 13-19
years of age, so as a result of this my content is more than suitable for the
average target aged reader (13-19) which will benefit both parties, us (Music
Magazine) in the sense that we will get sales left, right and centre if the
content of the stories are right for our target age range and also in terms of
the customer as they will get the correct content of the stories which is hugely
beneficial to their morale.
33. How does it appeal to the
viewers/readership
• In addition to this, the cover lines also entail what else is contained within a issue of
this particular magazine as the Music Magazine’s content is not only about the main
front cover, but also about the secondary stories which is more commonly known as
cover lines which are there just to make up space and inform the reader of what they
are getting themselves into.
34. Genre• The genre of music magazine will be a popular magazine and this is mainly as a result
of my responses I had received from my primary research, furthermore this is also as a
result of Clash Music Magazine and I will be taking further inspiration from their
magazine as I truly believe that theirs is effective in the sense that they don’t try and
make their Music Magazine too complicated, they just stick to the basics and keep
their content, layout, genre and style very simplistic which makes the Music Magazine
very effective
35. Genre
• The denotation of the genre for this music magazine will be an Indie genre music
magazine which I feel is appealing mainly towards the female target age range who
might enjoy artists whose songs are indie based, and therefore want to gain
information about upcoming tour and festival dates.
• Furthermore I have also chosen Indie as one of my possible genres as I recently put
out a questionnaire on Survey Monkey and one of my questions that I stated towards
the recipients was “What genre of music do you most enjoy listening to”, the main 2
responses that I received was that Popular music & Indie music was the joint top genre
base of my music magazine, what this means is that I will be most likely to have a
Indie genre based Music Magazines in order to please the potential customers.
38. Connotations behind the Mood Board
• The images that have been formatted into the last 2 slides imply what kind of artists,
colours & styles we are looking to format into our music magazine.
• Young & upcoming artists who are starting to make their name for themselves, for
example Rita Ora & Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift who are already a big draw in the
music industry and the reason they are a big draw is the reason why we want them to
be on the front cover and double page spread of our music magazine.
• As you can see the mood board highlights the target audience that we definitely want
to attract to our music magazine in order to gain customer sales. Additionally, this
mood board enables us to know what demographic we are targeting so we know then
what type of content we want to deliver.
40. Justification of Masthead Name Ideas
• Within our survey monkey primary research, we asked questions to the public
about what title names otherwise known as masthead names would they like to
see on a pop music magazine Front Cover and the main responses were: Smash,
The News of Music, Truth, Shoot & Pop Me.
• First and foremost Smash is a very credible name as we feel it represents the
ethos of our brand in that we would love to blow our competition out of the water
as we want to make a real impact and we feel we can do that with the names of
huge music stars that we have planned.
• Additionally, “Truth” is another name which has an element of honesty about it as
our magazine could also represent a certain degree of truth and honesty in the
sense that all of the stories are non fiction and all true so it would give the fans of
music stars a fantastic opportunity to connect with their idols on a higher level.
• Another name which sprung to our mind was The News of Music which may not
sound too appealing but with the content that we have planned this is another
route that we can down with in terms of our masthead and again this is another
route that we can go to if some of the options are unavailable.
• The last two options are “Shoot & Pop Me” these two are more of backup choices
if the top 3 selected go wrong and for some legal reasons we can’t pick them. The
positive from these are that fans can relate to this as our demographic is relatable
to what the word “Shoot & Pop Me” actually means to the reader in terms of what
it connotes.
41. Masthead Font Styles
• As demonstrated below, this colour is represented throughout Clash Music
Magazine of the colour that is displayed below. The image below is
cropped from my front cover in which the colour is the background of my
front cover.
• The E below is a cropped screenshot from my double page spread in which
the E is the start of the word “Eminem” and as you can see the colours are
practically the same which symbolises a certain level and degree of
consistency when it comes to the colours consistency throughout the front
cover and double page spread.
• Additionally, the Stand first is yet again represented with the same colour of
tone with the other two screenshots beside the stand first and yet again this
illustrates a certain level of consistency in terms of the colours not being
different to each other in the front cover and double page spread.
42. Magazine Font Styles
• Drop Capital: I will be using this for my drop capital for the simple reasons that it will be
consistent within every double page spread of our music magazine. Furthermore it
may not stand out from the crowd, but it is constant and consistent so it can easily be
outlined and referred to as a Drop Capital.
• Title of Artist: Now for this font style, there are two types so that indicates a certain
level of inconsistency however a level of variation which is also gratifying when it
comes font styles. These two font styles are bold, and in similarity with the drop capital
font styles but are consistent and are easy on the eye for the consumers of our
product/service we are offering.
43. Analysing My Chosen Magazine Of
Inspiration
• The repetition of genre is the main aspect that
we will be following in accordance to Steve
Neale’s theory in the sense that the codes and
conventions will be similar in our music magazine
“Smash Music Magazine” as they are in double
page spread articles of magazines of our
inspiration such as this which is a double page
spread article of ‘Clash’ Music Magazine.
Additionally, every music magazine whether that
be our magazines of inspiration or not would of
related to Steve Neale’s theory about Repetition
& Difference and this is relevant from the
screenshot to the right of me as you can see.
This is significantly important as customers may
want their content to become repetitive but not at
an excessive rate or they become a bit
uninterested with the same content on a weekly
basis.
44. Analysing My Chosen Magazine Of
Inspiration Our magazine of inspiration is not only “Clash
Music Magazine” which is still in existence, but
also ex Music Magazines that don’t run
anymore such as “Smash Hits” in which the
gender stories will obviously not be solely on
one gender and will often interchange
dependable on the content of the front cover
and the main double page spread.
Furthermore, the difference in relation to Steve
Neale’s theory about Repetition & Difference,
we will be focusing on the difference aspects
as well as the repetition side of things in order
for our readership figures to increase after our
first issue especially with the use of our
utilization of the festive holidays.
47. Proposal (Format Size of Music
Magazine)
• Source:
http://momentumpress.com/sccc/LD/Resources/MagazinePageSize.pdf
• There are two sizes which are the known as the dimensions and size of a
music magazine and these are known as the “Standard Size” & the “Digest
Size”, the standard size is 8 3/8 X 10 7/8 . Additionally magazines sizes often
vary from the two standard sizes as over sized as well as undersized
magazines can be produced and their cost per square inch is always at a
higher rate.
• As a result of the mini research I have carried out in order to find out all of the
possible print sizes & dimensions along with this music magazine, we have
decided to use the standard size which is recommended by most music
magazines in order for our magazine to look more conventional and buyable
for the average consumer.
48. Graphic Layout (Front Cover)
The Masthead is displayed as the main thin bar at the top of the image below, the masthead
needs to be kept simple as it is a very conventional and therefore essential aspect of the front
cover of any music magazine. This is very important as we want the Masthead to be
recognisable to the customers so that they might be intrigued by the conventionalism from our
magazine of inspiration “Clash”
The main Front Cover Image
foreshadows the content for the
rest of this music magazine and
that sets out what kind of artists
and what kind of genre is put out
throughout the latest addition of
this music magazine. Additionally,
the Front Cover Image gives the
customers a moment to take in
and understand what the picture
might foreshadow what content is
to come later in this debut issue of
our music magazine.
The Cover Lines
are normally
considered as an
important aspect,
and therefore the
cover lines will be
placed onto this
text box and this
will help to
promote our music
magazine to fans
of the artists who
are the cover lines.
49. Graphic Layout (Front Cover)
The colour pink as I have stated in the
House Style is consistent throughout our
music magazine pages whether that would
be front cover or double page spread.
Furthermore the colour pink is constant in
not only the house style but also the font
style which makes this music magazine a
conventional magazine in relevance to their
competitors. This thin white bar states a
world exclusive for the music star who
features for our music magazine whether
that be Eminem, or another music superstar
such as Ed Sheeran. This again is
exceptionally important
50. Graphic Layout of DPS
• Within a graphic layout of
my Front Cover &
Double Page Spread
there are a various
amount of conventions
which we have within
these graphic layouts.
First and foremost,
Captions are an
essential part of a double
page spread of a printed
publication, furthermore
Captions are the
description of the images
which are below. These
are very important as it is
known to be
conventional when doing
so in order to be on a
level par with competing
magazines such as
Clash, NME, & Mojo.
Among many conventions, many consider the Masthead to
be one of the most essential conventions which mainly boils down
to the pure significance of this convention as without a
Masthead you might as well not even publish your
magazine as the Masthead is the first thing that the
customer sees.
51. Graphic Layout of DPS
• Moving on, the Main
Image is very important
as well as it may connote to
the reader a particular tone
for the rest of double page
spread interviews.
Additionally, the Main
Image is there to lure the
customer in and intrigue them
to read on, an example of this
would be if the image was of
a BIG music star and
therefore the star appeal
would then lure the
