2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

8. I will be creating a Current Affairs magazine for my course work.
Magazine Title: After doing research and thinking of my target audience I have decided that my magazine
will be called “ TODAY CA” it stands for todays current affairs.
Chosen genre:The reason I have chosen Covid-19 as my main topic genre is simply because it is currently
the most talked about affair globally. I think that people would in what’s happening as a result of the
outbreak. Most magazines are talking about the disease itself or the updates from the prime minister
however not many are talking about the effects and how its affecting homes. My magazine will talk about
both, this is so the target audience can keep up to date with the updates as well as learning about the
effects it has.
The main cover line: This will be all about covid-19 as it is my chosen genre. It will be about the effects on
people. There will be additional cover lines talking about my other chosen subjects; Boris and Trump,
mental health due to lockdown, Racism is Asian families, stockpiling and supermarkets etc.
Target Audience profile: My target audience consists of female and male aged 24-54.They would be
middle- upper class as they are the type of people to be interested and understand the outbreak. They will
have a higher literacy understanding. The socio graphic profile of my target audience will be B and C1 and
the psychographic profile of my target audience will be mainstreamers/ succeeders.
Contents page:The magazine will have a lengthy contents page with sections such as UK, US, Finance and
economics etc. They will all contain the latest headlines in that country/ section.
Date and price: the date and price will be conventionally placed and will cost £4.
