My typical target audience…
The Target Audience Profile for my magazine will be
of what should be the typical reader of my magazine.
From doing genre and form research and textual
analysis of the 3 magazines I get my inspiration from I
was able to create my magazine’s typical reader:
Gender: Male
                      
While many of the main players in British
music publication acknowledge that there are
female readers of their magazines, statistics
suggest that the music press is essential a
male-dominated domain. Official profiles of
NME (65% male), Classic Rock (93% male),
Metal Hammer (66% male), Uncut (96%
male) and Kerrang! (60% male) highlights
this point, regardless of age range,
employment status. Females are
acknowledged through the rock industry but
typically adopt masculine characteristics
given aggressive stances and a male-
orientated nature, or give a seductive pose to
appeal to men equally. Women will be a
secondary audience, as females can be
appreciative of the music genre.
Age: 15 – 40
                        
NME’s reader profile is an
approximately 41-year-old male who
‘grew up with NME’, the magazine
while appealing to the younger
audience through up-coming artists
and iconography will also appeal to
an older readership through an
emphasis on music from the 60s, 70s
and 80s such as ‘The Kinks’, ‘The
Beatles’ etc. who proved popular in
Question 6 of the final questionnaire.
This age range up to 40 can be
supported by the prime example of
my own Dad who collected ‘Q’
magazine for years, and passed his
taste along to me!
Race: White/English
            
Interests
Rock music, specifically sub-genres Alternative and
Indie, instruments (e.g. guitar), internet smart (e.g. uses
facebook), fashion and films, clubbing,
gigs/festivals/concerts.
Income bracket: C2 – B & E
           
The magazine’s younger age bracket (15+) will consist
mainly of students who are at the beginning of experiencing
life and will be being introduced to music culture, such as a
media studies student, as a result coming under the E
income bracket. Those of an older bracket (20+) may be at
the stage of getting jobs and in a skilled income bracket (C2 –
 B) and some life experience is required as to have a wide
music knowledge as the older target audience are more
independent, seeking something different and are
 stereotypically more educated. Alternative stereotypically
targets the higher income brackets of those employed as they
are independent, unlike the younger age bracket who are not
of an independent mind-set yet would listen to pop music
 for social interaction.
VAL type:
                                           
Those who have more of an interest in the rock genre are not quite mainstreamers, but as the
rock genre becomes more popular in the music genre race, the audience may soon be able to
regard themselves as mainstreamers but specific to the rock genre.
Experiencers: Individuals who are willing to try anything and everything, who are young in
mind, easily bored and enjoy food, music and films. Experiences are also rebellious; this could
relate to the secondary audience of females, as by the magazine essentially aiming at males, a
rebellious female may buy the magazine to compete with males or so to speak to ‘prove a
point’.

Primary Audience:
Fun/Atics – Fun-seeking and are active young people. This is the primary audience I think,
the other two are secondary.

Secondary Audience:
Priority Parents (Like my Dad!) – Family values, media strongly dominate.

Fulfillers – Independents, already clear of what they like, well-educated.
