This document discusses attribution theory and common errors in attribution. It begins with warm-up questions about successes and failures. It then defines attribution as how people explain behaviors and events. Two types of attribution are discussed: situational vs. dispositional. Common errors in attribution are explained, including the fundamental attribution error of overemphasizing dispositional factors and underestimating situational influences. Research studies are described that demonstrate these errors, such as overestimating the intelligence of someone in a position of authority. The document concludes with a discussion of the self-serving bias and how attribution differs across cultures.

READING ANALYSIS
Due Dates: See Course Syllabus
Objective: The goal of this project is to expose you to a variety of different writing styles and assist you in developing proficient reading and writing skills, while breaking up the monotony that comes from exclusively reading textbooks. By reading articles, you will indirectly be exposed to domestic and foreign events, the world of entertainment and sports, practical how-to articles, and products on the market, among many other interesting things.
Instructions: Throughout the semester, you will be required to critically read and analyze selected readings. You will then write an analysis of the reading selection, which must contain the following information (organize your analysis in this order and use the provided template):
1. First, read and annotate the reading selection. Be sure to note any main ideas and supporting details. Mark any new vocabulary words.
2. Complete the STRAP mnemonic (see template for what STRAP is)
3. Create a graphic organizer
4. Using the Template, type up your assignment using MLA format. The template can be found in the folder with this assignment. The analysis must include the following elements:
a. Create a graphic organizer that matches the organization/structure of the text
b. Type the STRAP information
c. Type a one page, two paragraph (250+ word) summary of the reading written in 3rd person - you must include:
i. The first paragraph is a discussion of the audience, the author's primary purpose, and tone (who or what and which details from the reading support your answers)
ii. The second paragraph is a synopsis of the main idea and key details
d. Type a three quarter page (200+ word) personal response written in 1st person to the reading. Consider the following:
i. Connection to text, self, and/or world
e. Type up Three EASY vocabulary words from new vocabulary terms used in the reading
f. Type an MLA Works Cited entry for the reading
5. Save the document in the following format
a. Last Name-First Name-Class-Assignment Name
b. Example: Doe-John-DIRW 0310 71001-Reading Analysis-LitNar
You must turn in your analyses on time (see course agenda) and format them correctly in MLA style! Type them in Arial 12-point standard font, double-spaced with one-inch margins. Refer to the sample student analysis on Blackboard for exact formatting details. No late work will be accepted.
Assessment: Your work will be evaluated based on completeness of the assignment and quality of the written analyses. You will be graded on the following:
· Annotations, STRAP, and graphic organizer 15 %
· Summary (250+ words) 35 %
· Response (200+ words) 30 %
· Three EASY Vocabulary 15 %
· MLA Works Cited entry 5 %
Your instructor will choose a reading selection for this class assignment.
1) How would you define statistics? How is statistics used in business decision making? Statistics is accurately defined as the study of the analysis, data coll.

Type your introductory paragraph here for asthma including:
- An explanation of Asthma and why you selected it and
- A description of the audience you are addressing and the reason why you chose that group. (Research and cite)
- On the next page, create your fact sheet (handout).
Keep in mind that originality is always welcome, but quality content is the goal.
· Summary
· you need a Ref. list relating to the citations in your narrative ONLY. DO NOT include in the RL the authors you may have used to build your handout.
References Comment by JDG: Not bold.
As you know, the Ref. List refers to the citations you made in your text. If an author is not cited in your narrative (text), it should not be in the RL.
In a scholarly paper, several scholarly references are expected.
Look at the Course Information - Assignment Grading Rubric; this will give you a guidance as to what is expected.
Textbooks are not considered as scholarly sources. One of the goals behind writing a paper is to bring to light information from research already available.
This RL pertains to your text only, not the handout. Only citations in the narrative should be included in the RL.
Don’t include in the RL the websites or references you used to build your handout.

IMPORTANT
· Read and understand ALL the instructions before starting your paper.
· Meet ALL the requirements.
· Avoid websites such as Wikipedia, Answers.com, etc… Instead, use your course material, and if more references are required, browse the University library to find quality journal articles.
· Remember: title page + introduction + handout + RL.
Good luck!!
Dr. D
Note: Because of formatting issues, you may find it easier to place your handout at the very end; that’s okay.
If you work your handout with Microsoft Publisher and have difficulty inserting the handout in your WORD file, you can save each page of the handout as a JPEG and drag those files in your work.
That said, there are many ways/programs to design a flyer. It is your responsibility to find out (Google, YouTube, etc…) how to insert the handout in your work. I would suggest that you don’t wait at the last minute; I expect 1 WORD file only.

Purpose of the study
What is the author’s rationale for selecting this topic? Does he build a strong case?
The purpose of the study is to examine why perpetrators bully co-workers.
The assumption has been that stressful workplace conditions lead to bullying. Less research has been devoted to why perpetrators engage in bullying. This study addresses a gap in the literature by exploring individual and situational variables that contribute to bullying in the workplace.
Yes, the researchers provide a strong justification for their research, identifying what has been studied and what needs to be studied (a gap in the literature).
The aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between exposure to negative acts and self-labeling as a victim of bullying was moderated by trait anger and trait anxiety or by the target’s organizational position.
The assumption has been that self-labeling does not bare a relationship with anger, anxiety or position. Previous research has been conducted to prove that the above factors are ...
Gender Exercises Final project 100 points.1. Start by sele.docxhanneloremccaffery
Gender Exercises: Final project: 100 points.
1. Start by selecting one of the topics below and answer the questions or complete the exercises required.
2. You will need to have a few things integrated into your findings based on your research. 1) Find at least TWO concepts from the text as to how they relate to your findings. These should be CITED from the text. 2) Find TWO outside research articles that relate to your findings/topic, as well. These should be research articles from peer-reviewed journals, if possible.
3. So, the structure of your paper should be the following:
· An introduction of your topic
· Your findings/analysis
· How your findings relate to TWO concepts from the text
· How your findings relate to TWO research journals
4. Make sure you use proper citation format in your paper – APA, ASA preferred. By now, for an upper division course, you should be able to cite correctly, RIGHT?
5. Due date: Check the syllabus. These papers can be submitted online, we can discuss that.
6. FINALLY, ENJOY DOING THIS. TRY NOT TO SEE IT AS A BURDEN OR JUST ONE MORE THING YOU HAVE TO DO.
7. FINALLY, Finally, please proofread!
8. Paper length: 4 to 5 pages maximum
Possible topics:
Topic: Gender and our Bodies: Investigate the gender of current products designed to help people alter their bodies in some way. You might begin by making a list of all the products that fall into this category (if you are creative, this could be a fairly long list). Then think about which of these products seem to be aimed primarily at men, which at men, and which at both sexes. Look at the advertisements for these products in magazines, television ads, or on the internet. What gender messages are begin sent in these advertisements? What does your investigation suggest about men’s and women’s feelings about their bodies? (as an alternative, you can do research on how we manipulate our body to meet the gender binary goal e.g. cosmetic surgery)
Topic: Culture and Menstruation Taboos: Many cultures have menstruation taboos, dictating behaviors women can and cannot engage in when they are menstruating. Use online resources and your library to do some research on how different cultures think about menstruation and the norms they have regarding this biological process. How do these practices compare with those in your own culture?
Topic: Division of Labor in your Household: Write an essay in which you describe what the division of household labor was like in your own house growing up. Who did what, and how did everyone seem to feel about it? Were there tensions over who did what tasks? What would be your ideal division of household labor if you were to form your own household?
Topic: Couples and Household Labor: Interview some couple about their division of household labor. You might interview both together or each separately. Come up with an extensive list of all the tasks that are involved in maintaining a household, and ask your ...

2. WARM-UP GAME
Write 5 questions that are based on your own
knowledge?
(Examples: Who played catcher for the Boston Red
Sox in 2004? What college did Mr. Hausman attend?
What is the TuHS Cross-Country Record?)
3. WARM-UP QUESTIONS
Describe a time when you or a team of yours
had a big victory/success in your life. Why did
this happen?
Describe a time when you or a team of yours
had a big loss/defeat/failure in your life. Why
did this happen?
Now consider…
Compare the reasons behind each of these events? Are they
they same? Different? Do these reasons hold true for most
examples?

LEARNING OUTCOMES
SC.2.A. Describe the role of situational and dispositional factors
in explaining behaviour.
SC.2.B. Discuss two errors in attributions.
Note…The studies that we will discuss today will help answer
both of these learning outcomes. You should make a note of this
and do not say that you do not have studies to answer either of
these standards.
5. SOCIAL COGNITION
How we process information in a social
world.
We take information in, make quick
judgments, and behave according to those
decisions.
6. ATTRIBUTION
The process of interpreting and explaining
the causes of behaviors and events in the
social world.
How we decide why a person does what they do.
Humans have a need to understand why something
happens.
Social Cognition We do this all the time!
7. TRY THIS…
How do you attribute The Bieb’s tirades?
8. SITUATIONAL VS. DISPOSITIONAL
Situational Dispositional
External
environments cause
people to act the
way they do.
Example: I wrote a bad
essay because I didn’t
get the prompt I wanted.
Internal characteristics
cause people to act the
way they do.
Example: I wrote a bad
essay because I decided not
to study.
9. YOUR INSTRUCTIONS: GROUP A
Imagine that you got a speeding ticket driving
to school. Explain why this might have
happened.
10. YOUR INSTRUCTIONS: GROUP B
Imagine a classmate of yours gets a speeding
ticket while driving to school. Explain why this
might have happened.
11. ACTOR-OBSERVER EFFECT
People tend to make an attribution about
behavior depending on whether they are
performing the it themselves or observing
somebody else do it.
Behavior of self: Situational Factors
Behavior of others: Dispositional Factors
Do we agree with this idea?
12. ERRORS IN ATTRIBUTION
We make mistakes with our attributions all the
time!
How can this impact our lives?
SC.2.B. Discuss two errors in attributions (the
studies for this standard also can be used for
SC.2.A.)
13. ERROR OF ATTRIBUTION #1:
FUNDAMENTAL ATTRIBUTION
ERROR
When people overestimate the role of
dispositional factors in an individual’s
behaviors and underestimate situational
factors.
14. OUR GAME SHOW
Who did you score as being more intelligent?
Why did you do this?
15. ROSS ET AL. (1977)
Aim: To determine if an assigned social role would
affect the judgment of that person
Method:
Created an experiment where participants were either assigned the
role of host, contestant, or audience member.
Host created questions based on their own knowledge.
If the answer was not correct, the host provided the answer.
After the game audience members ranked the intelligence of the host
versus the contestants.
16. ROSS ET AL. (1977)
FINDINGS/CONCLUSIONS
Findings: The host was consistently ranked as
having higher intelligence by the audience.
Conclusion: The audience were looking for
dispositional factors of the participants and not
the situational factors…Fundamental
Attribution Error!
Critical Thinking: Ecological validity?
Representative sample? Role of authority
figure? Applications?
17. SUEDFELD (2003)
Aim: To determine how Holocaust survivors use attribution to
explain their survival.
Method: Gave a survey to Holocaust survivors asking them to
explain the reasons that they survived. Compared this with a
control group.
Findings:
Survivors Control
Dispositional 34% 71%
Situational 91% 51%
Conclusion: Holocaust survivors had a more accurate picture of
what happened and the reason why they survived. FAE in play for
Control group.
18. EVALUATION OF FAE
Strengths of FAE Limitations of FAE
• Promotes understanding
of a common error that
people make.
• Supported by many
research studies
• May be culturally biased
towards individualism
• Research is generally
done in labs using
college students.
19. ERROR OF ATTRIBUTION #2:
SELF-SERVING BIAS
When people take credit for their success,
attributing them to dispositional factors, and
disassociate themselves from their failures,
attributing them to situational factors.
Did this happen in your warm-up question?
Self-Handicapping-Individuals who expect to fail
openly make situational attributions before
attempting the task.
20. LAU AND RUSSEL (1980)
Aim: To determine if college football coaches
displayed SSB.
Method: Examined sports pages in current print
and archives to study whether football coaches
would display a self-serving bias.
Findings/Conclusions: Football coaches attribute
victories to dispositional factors- hard work and the
talent of the team- and explain failures to
situational factors – weather, refs, injuries.
21. SELF-SERVING BIAS
Do you agree with this theory?
Why would we do this? What would it
accomplish for us?
22. KASHIMA AND TRIANDIS (1986)
Aim: To Determine if SSB is a culturally universal trait
Method: Asked students from different cultures
(America and Japan) to try to remember information
from slides of unfamiliar countries.
Findings:
American Students: Success attributed to ability.
Japanese Students: Failure Attributed to ability.
Conclusion:
Culture led students to engage in different types of attribution.
This is called the Modesty Bias
23. EVALUATION OF SSD
Strengths of SSB Limitations of SSB
Explains why some people
(mostly from individualistic
cultures) explain their
failures as being caused by
situational factors
The theory is culturally
biased. It does not explain
modesty bias.
24. ERRORS IN ATTRIBUTION SKITS
In pairs, you will create a short skit that represents one of the
three errors in attribution.
Create a naturalistic situation where errors in attribution could occur
Clearly demonstrate your error in action
Class will attempt to guess which error of attribution you are showing.
