The Oort cloud is a spherical cloud of small rocks and ice particles that surrounds our solar system far beyond the orbit of Neptune. It is thought to be the remnants of the original protoplanetary disc that formed the Sun and planets. The Oort cloud was created from debris left over after the formation of the planets and has been held together by the gravitational influence of Jupiter and Saturn. It extends from around 2,000 to 100,000 AU and its existence was first hypothesized in 1950.

 The Oort cloud is a cloud of debris that is in
our outer solar system.
 The cloud is mostly made up of small rock
and dust particles.
 It is also made up of large rocks that are from
debris in the cloud clumping together.

 The Oort cloud was created by the left over
debris from the period of time when the
planets were being formed.
 The Oort cloud was created with the left over
dust/rock particles that never quite made a
planet.

 Saturn and Jupiter hold the Oort cloud
together.
 The Oort cloud gets most of its light from
another star, not the sun.
 If the Oort cloud was clumped together it
would be about the size of Jupiter and Saturn
combined. The Oort cloud was discovered in
1950 by Jan Oort.
