The Chixulub Crater is a massive 112 mile-wide underwater impact crater located in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. It was formed around 66 million years ago when a 6 mile wide meteor struck the Earth at over 50,000 mph, releasing an energy equivalent to over 300 million nuclear bombs and causing a global cataclysm that resulted in the extinction of 85% of all species on Earth at the time through its aftermath of dust, debris fallout and freezing temperatures lasting months and years.
