The Dilemmas Faced by the Roman Catholic Church Today
Dilemmas Facing Roman Catholic Church Today:
The Roman Catholic Church has faced several dilemmas or challenges in today s society, particularly
on moral issues. Most of the dilemmas that the Catholic Church faces today are rooted in its Roman
traditions, doctrines, and dogmas. Some of these main dilemmas include concerns on whether to be
more conservative or liberal in religious direction, how to deal with the pedophilia crisis, and how to
tackle the shortage of priests. As these dilemmas have continued to be a serious challenge to the
Catholic Church, there is a great need to find the appropriate solutions to them. The Catholic Church
has been characterized by a long simmering hostility between conservative and liberal members of the
church regarding the need for the church to change in the wake of Vatican II. Consequently, the
conservative Catholics have faulted the unsteady post Vatican II perspective that has nearly made
everything permissible whereas the liberals claimed that there is a prejudiced hierarchy that seeks to
sweep unpleasant truths under the rug (Allen, 2012). While many conservative Catholics would like
the existing teachings to remain in place, the liberals are in support of drastic changes to the church
teachings on several issues like marriage and sexual matters. The other major dilemma facing the
Roman Catholic Church today is the pedophilia crisis, especially on how to deal with it. This Church
has been unsettled by numerous and credible

One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest By Ken Kesey
In Ken Kesey s book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, there were two main characters that were in
a battle to have the majority of control over the ward. Throughout the story, they engaged in different
acts of stubbornness to see who could display the most power and which of the two could stand their
ground the longest without giving in to the other. These two characters were: Randle McMurphy, a
new patient who was determined to change the ways of the ward, and Nurse Ratched, the head nurse
of the asylum who preferred to have complete control over everyone and everything.
Even though both characters go about gaining power in different ways, they are still both doing
whatever they can to have the upper hand over each other. They are both ... Show more content on

He says, Just as I said: any of you sharpies here willing to take my five bucks that says that I can get
the best of that woman, before the week s up, without her getting the best of me? (73) This quote
shows that McMurphy is very self assured that he can accomplish what he sets his mind to. The ward
was not used to this kind of behavior in a man. Most of the men that were already there needed to be
there because of an actual insanity problem, but McMurphy was there because he would rather have
been there than where he was before and the court had allowed him to be transferred. McMurphy took
them completely by surprise with his resistance to follow their instructions and to do what he was
expected to do. At his arrival, he immediately exhibited disobedience. He refused to take a shower,
which was the asylum s policy for new admissions. This instantly put Randle McMurphy under the
staff s radar for them to watch out for. Nurse Ratched (also known as Big Nurse) was used to being
forceful to get what she wanted. She stopped at no end to have complete oversight over the men in the
ward. When the men were in the nurse s presence they were either saying what they knew she wanted
to hear or cleaning something that she ordered them to clean. They knew not to speak out against her
and to not say something that would make you stand out too much. Ratched s tactics to get them to be
fit for society were normally some kind of procedure on the man

Analysis Of The Novel Ethan Frome
The setting of a novel is typically only the frame in which a novel takes place; it makes no grandiose
overtures to become a larger part of the novel than it is. However, the setting of Starkfield in Ethan
Frome is different in that the depiction of Starkfield is integral to one s understanding of the
underlying motives and feelings of the characters in the novel. The accumulated cold of many
Starkfield winters (Wharton 5) tangibly affects the personalities and actions of Ethan, Zeena, and
Mattie, mostly negatively. The character of Ethan Frome is first introduced to us via an unnamed
narrator, who is an engineer temporarily assigned to Starkfield for work, and Harmon Gow, a former
stagecoach driver. Ethan Frome is the most striking figure in Starkfield, though he was but the ruin of
a man (1), and looks as if he was dead and in hell now (2). His life was a series of misfortunes,
starting with the death of his father, the downward spiral of his mother s mental health, and his
irrational decision to marry his cousin, Zenobia Pierce, and her subsequent spiral into sickliness. From
the outset, Ethan Frome doomed himself the second he left his technical college and returned home to
Starkfield, never to leave again. Everything about Starkfield seems to mock him, especially the
cemetery that inters Ethan s family, the headstones seemingly mocking him with their existence: we
never got away how should you? (21). His refusal to make any lasting decisions in his life

A Girl Sat By Herself At A Dirty Lunch Table
A girl sat by herself at a dirty lunch table eating quietly. She ignored the jeers shot towards her, and
continued eating. She was facing the consequences of being different. How dare she have colored hair,
how dare she dress different, how dare she have different tastes, and most of all, how dare she not
conform. At least, that s how they think. If one does not conform, they get teased for being Weird, The
girl, however, was subject to more extreme forms, social deprivation, hitting, shoving, tripping. Every
day she was victimized, to the point where her confidence was in tatters. Every day she hid in her
room, she cried for hours. Weekends were her Savior, Summers were her heaven. The bus was
particularly hellacious. Every day, the same girl. Hair pulling, name calling, kicking. Every day it was
the same girl. It didn t matter what she did, this girl, Steph, was always on her case. Steph even got off

particular day, she learned something valuable. It was a lesson she would treasure for much of her life.
It was a snowy day, one worthy of a heavy coat. On the bus ride home from school, one of her usual
pursuers was silent. She took notice that they looked solemn. It was Steph, who waits for her parent

A Brief Note On Psychic And Paranormal Phenomena
Parapsychology is the study of psychic and paranormal phenomena, more commonly known as psi
phenomena. These phenomena include psychokinesis, precognition, and extrasensory perception.
Psychokinesis is defined as the power to move objects through psychic means. Precognition is the
ability to foresee and predict the future. Extrasensory perception is the ability to sense things through
the power of the mind, rather than through the five traditional physical senses. Some people believe in
the reality of psi phenomena because parapsychologists are often able to put on convincing shows and
do seemingly impossible acts. Uri Geller convinced people around the world of his parapsychological
powers, as he could perform mind reading tricks and see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, the subjects can easily cheat by seeing the shapes themselves or reading body language instead
of blindly guessing. The study would likely conclude that the subject is a psychic because they had
abnormal results, but this is a questionable argument by elimination because there is no evidence that
the abnormal results were due to psychic powers.
Parapsychologists explain the lack of evidence by claiming that psi phenomena are a type of elusive
phenomena, meaning that they do not work properly when skeptics are present. Therefore, people who
perform experiments on psi phenomena are causing the tests to be faulty. This explanation is an ad hoc
rescue because it creates a fake excuse for why psi phenomena cannot produce positive results when
tested. If the psi phenomena were actually real, scientists believe that the parapsychologists would
easily be able to supply prove of their existence. Furthermore, parapsychologists find it unfair the
scientific establishment has extremely high standards of evidence for psi phenomena. However,
extraordinary evidence is needed to prove extraordinary assertions. The scientific establishment views
parapsychology as a pseudoscience because while currently there is no concrete evidence of the
existence of psi phenomena, it is impossible to prove that psi phenomena are nonexistent.
Additionally, because there are no repeatable paranormal phenomena, the scientific community feels
that it is unlikely that such phenomena could exist.

The Success of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 Essay
The Success of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 Part 1 Karl Marks was not Russian and he died 34
years before the Russian revolution, he was a German who spent most his life in England. He worked
as a journalist but wrote books on history, religion, economics, society, and philosophy. Marx hated
the system of capitalism because he thought that it was capitalism that had produced the problems of
industry, poor living conditions and the social gap of the rich and poor. He thought that the system
destroyed people and made them greedy and that people only wanted something if it was worth
money. Karl Marx realised that there was not enough money to make everyone rich but he did thin k

His third and final solution was if people are working for the good of everyone else then there will be

achieved. Vladimir Ilch Ulyanov, also known as Lenin which was a secret codename he had adapted
so he could not be caught by the government on plots to overthrow them, was brought up in a well
educated middle class home and he was the third out of six children. He left school first in his class
and looked to become a scholar. He looked set to become a well educated and mature young man at
the age of sixteen but things were soon to change. As a teenager he took two harsh blows which led
him on to become a revolutionist. The first was of his fathers death when he was threatened with early
retirement because of the government s fear of public school education and had soon died after. The
second was the death of his eldest brother; he had been hanged for conspiring with a revolutionary
terrorist group which had plotted the assassination of Emperor Alexander 3rd. this made Lenin feel
very bitter toward the government and he felt as if he could change the country for the better. Lenin
enrolled in Kazan University, but he was quickly expelled as a radical troublemaker and after being
accused of joining an illegal secret student meeting he was

Last Of The Mohicans
The Last of the Mohicans
The Last of the Mohicans is a 1992 American historical drama directed by Michael Mann and staring
Daniel Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, and Jodhi May, with Russell Means, Wes Studi, Eric Schweig,
and Steven Waddington in supporting roles. It is set in 1757 during the French and Indian War. British
and French troops do battle in colonial America, with aid from various Native American war parties.
The Mohicans are allied with the British while their old enemies, the Hurons, side with the French.

(Russell Means), tries to stay out of the conflict, but together with his father and his brother Uncas

Roeves) from a Huron ambush. Hawkeye becomes the protector of the two daughters of a British

There are at least five million Indians in the US alone and several thousand Mohicans. The recurring
description of Uncas (Eric Schweig) as the last of the Mohicans symbolizes the death of Indian culture
at the hands of the intruding European civilization. The title anticipates the ultimate tragedy of the
film s plot. Although the title specifically refers to Uncas, it also alludes to a larger historical event:
the removal of the Indians by President Andrew Jackson s policies of the 1830s. The phrase the last of
the Mohicans is a passionate expression of grief of the extermination of the ways of life of Native
Americas. The Last of the Mohicans helped bring about another stereotype about Native Americans:

The Overcoat Rationalization

or other purposes are tied up to sets of morals that people agree to when creating it; however, what
will happen when either party tries to rationalize, meaning, trying to justify or explain a behavior or an
attitude with logical reasons, even if these are not appropriate. Gogol and Dostoevsky analyzed the
effect that rationalization has on individuals, but also in society through their works The Overcoat and
Crime and Punishment . They postulate questions such as, to what point can rules be broken? will that

Raskolnikov, in the novel, acted on his first instinct that he so much tough of and will not give it up.
He could justify his actions by thinking of him as being above the law or as he calls himself
extraordinary, which means to be on a position that is morally acceptable to act upon, since the
barriers that unify society seem to be irrational and therefore destructible. Raskolnikov can be said to
be thinking as a utilitarian, who thinks that the actions he takes will benefit everyone else even if what
they do may not seem as morally acceptable. It can also be said that it is promoting to take actions
influenced by our own free will, instead of moral rules, which can work sometimes, because us
humans can transcend any barrier created by traditional morality by denying it or giving it a different
meaning, however If people do not make wise decisions based upon the morality of society, then the
future of society is sure to suffer (wordks.dokland). Raskolnikov was right and wrong in his view of
morality, he was wrong in overlooking the pros and cons of society and thinking that reasoning will
always be correct, however Dostoevsky was able to point out this individualism that every human has
and found that thinking that reason will always be right was wrong, since even

Sources of Pollution and Their Effect
Air pollution used to be a natural occurrence that had no major effects on the Earth s inhabitants. Such
instances were caused by forest fires, emission from the Earth, and volcanoes. It was not until humans
discovered how to start and control fire that we started over polluting the planet. For many years cities
have struggled through thick smog due to dense smoke emissions. Officials, like in Los Angeles, have
tried to adopt multiple measures to combat the smog but the city, and the rest of the world, continued
to boom in industry. Thus, overwhelming the air pollution reforms the city tried to enforce. However,
it was not until about seventy one years ago during the height of World War Two, when the dire
consequences of air pollution began to dramatically increase. Instead of a foreign enemy attacking the
city of Los Angeles, it was a domestic one, smog. On July 26, 1943 downtown Los Angeles was
covered in smoke and fumes. The smog was extreme to the extent that it cut off visibility of three
blocks. This spontaneous gas attack came about in the middle of a heat wave. For the citizens it was
unbearable. They suffered from throat scraping and eye stinging sensations. The people soon realized
that something must have gone wrong.. The day after the incident, the city officials blamed the
Southern California Gas Co. s Aliso Street plant for the catastrophe. In order to stop the smog, the
angry public had the plant shut down temporarily. Yet they were unpleasantly surprised to

Sherman Alexie Flight Patterns
The story Flight Patterns by Sherman Alexie features a Native American of the Spokane Indian Tribe
that faces troubles with post 9/11 attacks. Alexie concentrates his story with remarks expressing the
emotional feelings of the American view of people with a medium to dark complexion. Alexie brings
contrast between two worlds. William, the main character, demonstrates the American view of people
who are perceived as a terrorist. Then, Fedaku, William s taxi driver, whom demonstrates the view of
a foreigner with a different life. Neither one of these men fit the profile of a terrorist, but is almost
always treated as a threat because of their appearance. For example William experiences and realizes
that we re all trapped by other people s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every time William is at the airport, he scans for little brown guys who reeked of fundamentalism
(Alexie 270). White Americans always gave William dirty looks, yet he was no different. Because
William is of Indian descent, he often gets characterized as a terrorist, but he also characterized a lot
of other people that looked the same way as him. The whole world relies on mass media because it is
today s way of retrieving information about the world. The media can either make you or break you.
In this case, the media made all people of color look like terrorists blaming them for actions of others.
Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even though William is not a Muslim, he is stereotyped as a terrorist
because of his physical features. For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media
provides a unique vantage point for examining how media representations impact both identity and
self understanding (Leavitt) which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are
most likely shown as 19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and
prone to addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped
as a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Not only is William
stereotyped but so is Fekadu, William s taxi driver. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from Ethiopia,
yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head addict on
welfare. Once again we are seeing someone being misjudged by their physical appearance even
though they are nowhere near the misinterpretations. Whichever type of media you look at, the
majority, if not all of them are unfavorable when it comes to the portraying of racial/ethnic groups.
These groups are always stereotyped and based on the racist actions done

Hirohito s Japanese Surrender Essay
Hirohito and The Japanese Surrender
The world was hectic in the 20th century. The first plane was flown, World War I took place (1914
1918), communists took over Russia and China (1917), penicillin was discovered (1928), the U.S.
stock market crashed (1929), and the DNA s structure was discovered (. However, on the eastern side
of the world, the most notable occurrences were probably Hitler s rise as chancellor and his launching
of the Kristallnacht, the German invasion of Poland, Japan s bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the
Holocaust. Further east, specifically Japan, its 124th Emperor had just inherited his father s place,
right before entering World War II. Throughout Hirohito s years of leadership, he made several ...

When Hirohito was twenty years old, he was the first Japanese Prince to travel to Europe. Years later,
as an adult, he became Japan s 124th Emperor, succeeding his father, Emperor Taisho, who died in
1926. His involvement in Japan s development during his nineteen years of reign was enormous. He
invaded Manchuria, to Japan s benefit (1931), supported the war against China (1937 1945), and
during World War II, formed alliances with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, forming the Rome Berlin
Tokyo Axis. Emperor Hirohito was a man of kind emotions, of good intentions, and whose interest
was always in the benefits of his people. Having agreed to join the terrorizing war, Japan suffered a
great deal. Its economy shattered the country s wealth dropped drastically, its citizens were losing
hope and confidence, and its military department was in a tough position and was starting to weaken
helplessly. Hirohito decided that the paramount decision he could possibly take was to surrender
Japan. He could no longer bear to see his people suffer and fight in the war, and thus showed he cared
about them by ending their side of the war. As Hirohito spoke about the war and its effect on his
people, he said: I made efforts to swallow tears and to protect the species of the Japanese nation . He
cared deeply about the pain his people were going through, and made it his foremost priority to end it.

The resource based view (RBV) emphasizes the firm s resources as the fundamental determinants of

competitive advantage ( see for instance Barney, 1991 and Peteraf and Barney, 2003). First, this model

Birth Control And Reproductive Rights
In the early 1900 s Margaret Sanger revolutionized the lives of women forever by securing the rights
of women to control their own fertility and the rights of a child to be wanted. Today we take birth
control for granted and it is indeed a right that we give little or no thought too therefore It is difficult
to imagine Sangers struggle to introduce birth control and reproductive rights in the U.S.A as being
fraught with controversy and causing her to be pursued as a criminal. The Comstock Act of 1873
meant that by simply providing any information on birth control a person was breaking the law and
risked arrest. This essay aims to show the significance of Margaret Sangers contribution to nursing,
how she created change in the United states as a whole as well as in the nursing profession and the
lasting legacy she has left to nursing. When she received her first major honor, the Medal of
Achievement off the American Women s Association in 1931, the citation recognized that she fought a

in her own lifetime but the lives of millions in future generations. The Comstock Act of 1873 was

Gallows Humor Research Paper
Gallows humor Humor and laughter are always good for physical and mental health. While
unhappiness and stress can affect individuals lifestyle and cause diseases, jokes and chuckles can
release favorable hormones, strengthen organs functioning, relax individuals minds, and make them
happy and productive. Consequently, the role of fun and laughs have assumed a lot of significance in
the field of medicine. Common knowledge and research studies have shown that laughter can not only
lighten up people who are afflicted with serious diseases and other illnesses, but can also facilitate
them to recover quickly. However, when gallows humor involving medical professionals in healthcare
settings is focused, it can give rise to ethical dilemmas. Gallows ... Show more content on

She begins by defining gallows humor, and it is humor that treats serious, frightening, or painful
subject matter in a light or satirical way. Joking about death fits the term most literally, but making fun
of life threatening, disastrous, or terrifying situations fits the category as well (Watson 38). The author
explains it further by pointing out the distinction between this form of humor and harmless, fun filled
humor that might be practiced by medical personnel toward their patients. For instance, Watson uses
the real life example of American physician named Hunter Patch Adams, who was the inspiration for
the Hollywood movie, Patch Adams, and how he performed various comic antics to entertain and
relax his chronically ill patients, including cancer affected children. On the other hand, the author slots
gallows humor as a dubious form of fun which is practiced by medical residents among themselves.
Gallows humor is not a feel good, Patch Adams kind of humor, but it is not synonymous with all cruel
humor, either (Watson 38). At the outset, she uses a somber incident involving a pizza delivery boy
who was shot and brought to the emergency room of a particular hospital. The doctors there tried their
best, but he passed away, still they loosened up and joked about his death. Through this occurrence,
Watson implies that doctors need to lighten up to ease their shock and depression because the boy who
died is the one who regularly deliver pizzas to them. I think the motivation for telling the joke was to
integrate this terrible event and get through the shift (Watson 44). So, to get over his demise, maintain
their mental health, and to treat incoming patients in an enhanced frame of mind, they tried gallows
humor. As laughing during stressful situations can help healthcare

Authors or Horror, Edgar Allen Poe for The Raven and...
The two poems are eerie in aspect to modern day horror. Our terrifying horror movies and books
derive from these two men; Edgar Allen Poe and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Although these two
authors are different in their techniques of writing, there are two poems that are similar. The Rime of
the Ancient Mariner and The Raven consists of a bird bringing a bad omen. The situations are
different; however, the meanings of the birds are similar. In these two poems, the differences are more
apparent; the significance of one being a sea bird and the other a land dweller, the situations of
appearance, and the meanings and curses they place upon the cursed. First, Coleridge and Poe create
their birds different in the aspect of their dwelling and manner. The sea bird is called the Albatross, in
the beginning it is seen as a wonderful and beautiful bird. When the Mariner and his men were out to
sea this bird, with a slight body but adorned large wings, flew across the ocean and the ice broke from
the ocean. It almost appears as if the bird is innocent, with the description of the bird. Having a frail
breast yet the stretching wingspan is strong; for leading those in need, the color of the bird even hints
at innocence. It is innocent and blind from the death it is soon to experience. The Raven is a majestic
and cruel land bird. The body is large but the wings are smaller. The color described as the Raven
shows power and ferocity. The shoddy eyes of this endearing bird pierce into

Understanding The Relationship Between Zhou Enlai And Mao...
Understanding the relationship between Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong is critical in determining Zhou s
true motives for providing sanctuary to the victims of the Cultural Revolution. The mystery of Zhou
and Mao s relationship is not that of Mao s sadism, which has been exposed by numerous writers, but
Zhou s submission. Their relationship, and Zhou s role in Communist China, and therefore the
Cultural Revolution is questioned by few historians other than Gao Wenqian, Andrew Nathan, and
Jonathan Spence. Their revisionist perspectives on Zhou were controversial, labelling him as the man
who let it happen , and even as a fully aware bystander when it came to the monster he helped create
inside Mao, but contradicting most of what historians have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, reviews of his book have mostly considered Gao s work as a reliable source of chinese
history, especially in regards to beloved Zhou. Historian Jonathan Spence wrote, With Gao s book, I
feel like we are edging towards a clearer understanding of Mao and Zhou and the Revolution. The
historians Spence and Nathan find Gao s book riveting, and add value to his already credible narrative.
As someone who experienced Chinese history through the archives, it is only right that Gao s book is
deemed credible in evaluating the life of Zhou Enlai.
Andrew Nathan portrays the famous relationship between the two leaders as mutually dependent on
one another, yet simultaneously unequal. Nathan s portrayal of Mao and Zhou is not only an addition
to Gao s piece but is valued in that it is written by someone of an outside perspective, and written from
the knowledgeable outsider s point of view. Nathan, who is a professor of Chinese history and politics
at Columbia, is an expert of Chinese history. He implies that although Zhou believed firmly in
Communism, he did not share Mao s fanaticism. Mao s internal policies were becoming more and
more extreme; Mao s launch of the Cultural Revolution led Zhou to further disagree with his comrade
and leader. The Cultural Revolution was a political strategy of Mao, to bring those who opposed him
out into the open. It encouraged the youth of China to be more involved with

available for students from all ages to join. Vietnam is a great potential market to invest in. Since
Vietnam has the policies of searching for oversea investment, it has been an attractive market for
many foreign companies. The economy and industry there are in the developing process, which means
that they are lack of investments from outside. Moreover, the educational system has been focusing a

The Effects Of Oppression In The Souls Of Black Masks
The dynamic of oppressor and oppressed has been an issue for centuries, and a topic that has been
written about for just as long. Many different authors offer insights into the physical and psychological
damages this dynamic can have on both parties. Solutions are often offered in regards to what would
be the most effective way to combat or cope against this type of social hierarchy. However, due to the
passing of history and the continuation these degrading dynamics, many of these solutions can be
deemed as too hopeful, too passive, or simply unachievable. Throughout The Souls of Black Folk by
W.E.B DuBois, Black Skin, White Masks by Frantz Fanon, and For Two Thousand Years by Mihail
Sebastian the issues and dynamics of oppression are addressed, and different coping methods and
solutions are critiqued or praised, however all three novels mistakenly offer solutions that reject the
idea of accountability on the oppressor s behalf. The understanding of this mistake can be seen in
some of the authors later ideology shift towards a more radical state of mind in regards to the issue. In
The Souls of Black Folk, one of the first consequences of oppression that DuBois sees as having
lasting psychological effects on the black man/woman is the concept of the veil . This veil is a shadow
that casts over the black man s life that forces him to view himself from the degrading perspective of
white society, It is a peculiar sensation, this double consciousness, this sense of always

Marketing Is The Core Of Communication Between A...
Marketing is the core of communication between a corporation and its target audience, facilitated by
widespread consumption and significantly influenced by consumer demand. It also serves as a
platform that allows a company s message to exploit media platforms in the attempt to gain a
successful customer response and induce behaviours that will propel economic expansion. Despite the
indisputable benefits of marketing to companies and consumers, the occasional antagonistic motives
behind its evident necessity is a point of interest because of how marketing approaches are being
utilised as a transmission channel for corporations to promote unhealthy competition, such as eliciting
the disrepute of another brand or falsifying product specifications for higher turnover, or induce
psychological and behavioural change within the society. Nonetheless, marketing fosters innovation,
prevents market complacency and functions as a catalyst for the promotion of consumer worthy
products and services.
The principle basis of a profitable relationship between a company and its consumer audience is
marketing. It is therefore important for corporations to conduct appropriate market research to identify
the needs of its target market, determine how to prevail over existing competition and analyse
potential threats towards productivity and profitability. Marketing provides conceptual frameworks
and economic models that allow corporations to estimate its capabilities relevant to the current

Passing And Repealment Of The Fourteenth Amendment
Answering how the Prohibition failed is a lofty question with many answers and components of

The combination of crime and disobedience at such a high rate spelled for the inevitable repeal of
Amendment 18, but what were some of the specific factors? This paper will try to examine what led to
the passing and repealment of The 18th Amendment + The Volstead Act. In order to understand the

This was a controversial move for the Congress to make, it certainly did not go off without
consequences. The Volstead Act, even as concrete as its rules seem, had many loopholes that the
American people could abuse. One of the largest and most obvious loopholes was that medicinal
alcohol could still be prescribed by physicians. Many people would feign sickness in order to obtain
whisky legally and reliably. This caused the sale of medical alcohol to insanely spike in sales, but even
with the obvious implications these stats held, the government did not remove whisky as a prescribed
medicine. Many farmers would also profit off of alcohol made of grapes and other juices. Since the
government couldn t ban fruit juices, they would mix those fruits with a certain dry fruit used to create
alcohol. Supplies in which you could easily brew your own alcohol could also be found in common
groceries. People even went as far as to joining the congregation to obtain sacramental wine. If one
wanted to enjoy their drinking with others, they could just enter one of the many Speakeasies, popping
up underground. These secret bars had secret entrances, which could only be accessed with a spoken
password. It was said that with every legitimate bar closed, six speakeasies would take it s place.
While some made the use of legal loopholes to get their alcohol fix, many turned to crime and
subterfuge. People who didn t want to directly get their hands dirty called upon the

filled with chores and taking care of siblings and being sold off and married when the time comes, not

Jemima Emerson. She is a 15 year old girl who lives in Trenton, New Jersey and is not ready for what

to grow up and take charge. You would never think a teenager would have as much sense of humor,
responsibility and be as vindictive as Jemima Emerson.
Jemima Emerson has many different character traits that all describe her and her unique personality. To
begin with, Jem is very brave. She has to deal with so much throughout the book that she does not let
get to her. She deals with everything in a mature and sophisticated manner. For example, she had to go
through father dying, mothers grieving period and Raymond. When Jems father died it was a massive
loss for her whole family, including her but she had to be the first to live with the pain because her
mother didn t forgot about everyone and everything and moved into the Moore s because she could
not deal with the heartache, Jem had to get her out of this phase and let mother know father s death
was not her fault . Next, Jem had to deal with the loss of a close friend. Raymond Moore had gotten

Symbolism In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls
In the memoir, The Glass Castle, it was evident the Glass Castle was not just a physical object itself,
but holds a deeper meaning of symbolism towards the author, Jeannette Walls. After completing the
book, it has been noted that the Glass Castle symbolizes the constant reminder of Jeannette s hope that
one day both her family and house will be in a stable, working position. Throughout the novel, the
Glass Castle was vaguely mentioned as the Walls family continued their journey through the United
States. However, through their ongoing journey, Jeannette s view of the Glass Castle changed, as it
was inevitably just a vision that her father had implanted in her brain but never actually built in reality.

the book, the Glass Castle was once again mentioned and was still a plausible idea in Jeannette s

The Health Of American Politics Essay
The Health of American Politics/Democracy In this paper, I am going to write about two topics which
they are the American politics and the American democracy. I am going to discuss one issue regarding
each topic. In the topic of American politics, I will describe the negative impact of the Israeli lobby on
the American Politic. After that, I will describe the negative impact of the electoral college system on
the American democracy. The Israeli lobby and the electoral college system are affecting the health of
American politics and democracy negatively. In the past few decades till now, the United States
foreign policies were an important factor to deal with many issues around the globe. Starting from the
Security Council ending with the country policy, the United States has made many decisions that took
negative effect on the country s security and its relations with other countries. The reason behind these
negative effect is the United States foreign policies especially toward the Middle East. These policies
are greatly affected by the Israeli lobby in the United States. As John J. Mearsheimer, a professor of

Roman Arena
During the study abroad trip to Italy, I had the opportunity of visiting another city, Verona. One of the
first stops that were made as a class was the Arena. Not only is the Arena the best preserved Roman
monument in Verona, but it was built in the first century AD. The reason behind this cultural
monument being a favorite was due to the way it was not broken down and once I stepped foot into
the center of the arena, I felt as if I had become apart of what took place years ago within it. Even
though the arena is well preserved, a few changes had been made to the center in order for it to keep
up with modern day culture. The name, Arena, originated from its central arena that was covered in
sand. This famous arena held many gladiator fights when it was first built and now, to keep in touch
with the modern day shows that are held in colesseums, operas are hosted. A fun fact about the arena
is it was originally built outside of the city walls. It was built in that location to make it easier for

Religion and the Development of the Western World
Religion and the Development of the Western World
The accomplishments and success of civilizations are closely linked to their religious outlook and the
role of religion in their governments and society. Throughout history rulers have used the influence of
religions to control their populations and provide the justification for their power. A society with a
greater degree of separation between religion and government promotes a superior level of liberty and
creativity amongst its people. By the time of the decline of the Roman Empire in the west, however,
the world had come full circle to a return to theocratic dictatorship. In the ancient civilization of the

By the time of the republic it had developed into an honorific system of ancestor worship that focused
on family and the importance of that unit as a model for the republic. The Roman religion came to
mirror that of the Greeks, as did so much of their society. Their government maintained a control over
religion throughout, however, using laws to promote the worship of some and condemn the worship of
other gods. Indeed, after the crises of the late republic one of Augustus actions was to promote a return
to the traditional family and religious values by building temples and supporting religious schools. He
outlawed new, foreign religions and after his death he was worshiped as a god. This was the beginning
of the turn back towards religious autocracy. The emperors became quasi religious figures in life and
were objects of popular cult worship after their deaths. This is a rejection of the Hellenic ideal of the
greatness of the common man. It promotes the will of a single idealized super elite to the detriment of
the populace. By the decline of the western empire the emperors ruled by decree, sending their
infallible word down from on high to the masses. The free debate of ideas was dead. This became the
religious model propagated in the Byzantine Empire. There all semblance of separation between the
state and religion was eliminated. The emperor made his decrees on matters of politics and law as well
as matters of faith and theology. Christianity was

The Career Of Nursing Career
Nursing When people are sick or injured they need someone to take care of them and may need to see
a doctor. But usually there are other professionals who will see them first and provide hands on care
before the doctor arrives. Many of these professionals are nurses. Within the healthcare sector focused
on the care of individuals, families and communities, nurses may help patients attain, maintain, or

The history of nurses includes different kinds of nursing. Regarding the clinical nurse specialist, the
national league for nursing education first drew up a plan to create the clinical nurse specialist role in
the 1940s. The first master s degree program opened in 1950 at Rutgers University; the only specialty

available in a number of fields in response to increased specialization in health care, the development
of new technologies, and need to provide alternative, cost efficient health care in the physician

  • 2. The Dilemmas Faced by the Roman Catholic Church Today Dilemmas Facing Roman Catholic Church Today: The Roman Catholic Church has faced several dilemmas or challenges in today s society, particularly on moral issues. Most of the dilemmas that the Catholic Church faces today are rooted in its Roman traditions, doctrines, and dogmas. Some of these main dilemmas include concerns on whether to be more conservative or liberal in religious direction, how to deal with the pedophilia crisis, and how to tackle the shortage of priests. As these dilemmas have continued to be a serious challenge to the Catholic Church, there is a great need to find the appropriate solutions to them. The Catholic Church has been characterized by a long simmering hostility between conservative and liberal members of the church regarding the need for the church to change in the wake of Vatican II. Consequently, the conservative Catholics have faulted the unsteady post Vatican II perspective that has nearly made everything permissible whereas the liberals claimed that there is a prejudiced hierarchy that seeks to sweep unpleasant truths under the rug (Allen, 2012). While many conservative Catholics would like the existing teachings to remain in place, the liberals are in support of drastic changes to the church teachings on several issues like marriage and sexual matters. The other major dilemma facing the Roman Catholic Church today is the pedophilia crisis, especially on how to deal with it. This Church has been unsettled by numerous and credible ... • 3. One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest By Ken Kesey In Ken Kesey s book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, there were two main characters that were in a battle to have the majority of control over the ward. Throughout the story, they engaged in different acts of stubbornness to see who could display the most power and which of the two could stand their ground the longest without giving in to the other. These two characters were: Randle McMurphy, a new patient who was determined to change the ways of the ward, and Nurse Ratched, the head nurse of the asylum who preferred to have complete control over everyone and everything. Even though both characters go about gaining power in different ways, they are still both doing whatever they can to have the upper hand over each other. They are both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says, Just as I said: any of you sharpies here willing to take my five bucks that says that I can get the best of that woman, before the week s up, without her getting the best of me? (73) This quote shows that McMurphy is very self assured that he can accomplish what he sets his mind to. The ward was not used to this kind of behavior in a man. Most of the men that were already there needed to be there because of an actual insanity problem, but McMurphy was there because he would rather have been there than where he was before and the court had allowed him to be transferred. McMurphy took them completely by surprise with his resistance to follow their instructions and to do what he was expected to do. At his arrival, he immediately exhibited disobedience. He refused to take a shower, which was the asylum s policy for new admissions. This instantly put Randle McMurphy under the staff s radar for them to watch out for. Nurse Ratched (also known as Big Nurse) was used to being forceful to get what she wanted. She stopped at no end to have complete oversight over the men in the ward. When the men were in the nurse s presence they were either saying what they knew she wanted to hear or cleaning something that she ordered them to clean. They knew not to speak out against her and to not say something that would make you stand out too much. Ratched s tactics to get them to be fit for society were normally some kind of procedure on the man ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of The Novel Ethan Frome The setting of a novel is typically only the frame in which a novel takes place; it makes no grandiose overtures to become a larger part of the novel than it is. However, the setting of Starkfield in Ethan Frome is different in that the depiction of Starkfield is integral to one s understanding of the underlying motives and feelings of the characters in the novel. The accumulated cold of many Starkfield winters (Wharton 5) tangibly affects the personalities and actions of Ethan, Zeena, and Mattie, mostly negatively. The character of Ethan Frome is first introduced to us via an unnamed narrator, who is an engineer temporarily assigned to Starkfield for work, and Harmon Gow, a former stagecoach driver. Ethan Frome is the most striking figure in Starkfield, though he was but the ruin of a man (1), and looks as if he was dead and in hell now (2). His life was a series of misfortunes, starting with the death of his father, the downward spiral of his mother s mental health, and his irrational decision to marry his cousin, Zenobia Pierce, and her subsequent spiral into sickliness. From the outset, Ethan Frome doomed himself the second he left his technical college and returned home to Starkfield, never to leave again. Everything about Starkfield seems to mock him, especially the cemetery that inters Ethan s family, the headstones seemingly mocking him with their existence: we never got away how should you? (21). His refusal to make any lasting decisions in his life ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Girl Sat By Herself At A Dirty Lunch Table A girl sat by herself at a dirty lunch table eating quietly. She ignored the jeers shot towards her, and continued eating. She was facing the consequences of being different. How dare she have colored hair, how dare she dress different, how dare she have different tastes, and most of all, how dare she not conform. At least, that s how they think. If one does not conform, they get teased for being Weird, The girl, however, was subject to more extreme forms, social deprivation, hitting, shoving, tripping. Every day she was victimized, to the point where her confidence was in tatters. Every day she hid in her room, she cried for hours. Weekends were her Savior, Summers were her heaven. The bus was particularly hellacious. Every day, the same girl. Hair pulling, name calling, kicking. Every day it was the same girl. It didn t matter what she did, this girl, Steph, was always on her case. Steph even got off on the same stop as her. Though she often ran into the house before much more happened. One particular day, she learned something valuable. It was a lesson she would treasure for much of her life. It was a snowy day, one worthy of a heavy coat. On the bus ride home from school, one of her usual pursuers was silent. She took notice that they looked solemn. It was Steph, who waits for her parent every day, due to her house being far off and her parents picking her up after work. Today, however, the mother of the bullied girl was keeping an eye on Steph. She isn t moving... ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. A Brief Note On Psychic And Paranormal Phenomena Parapsychology is the study of psychic and paranormal phenomena, more commonly known as psi phenomena. These phenomena include psychokinesis, precognition, and extrasensory perception. Psychokinesis is defined as the power to move objects through psychic means. Precognition is the ability to foresee and predict the future. Extrasensory perception is the ability to sense things through the power of the mind, rather than through the five traditional physical senses. Some people believe in the reality of psi phenomena because parapsychologists are often able to put on convincing shows and do seemingly impossible acts. Uri Geller convinced people around the world of his parapsychological powers, as he could perform mind reading tricks and see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, the subjects can easily cheat by seeing the shapes themselves or reading body language instead of blindly guessing. The study would likely conclude that the subject is a psychic because they had abnormal results, but this is a questionable argument by elimination because there is no evidence that the abnormal results were due to psychic powers. Parapsychologists explain the lack of evidence by claiming that psi phenomena are a type of elusive phenomena, meaning that they do not work properly when skeptics are present. Therefore, people who perform experiments on psi phenomena are causing the tests to be faulty. This explanation is an ad hoc rescue because it creates a fake excuse for why psi phenomena cannot produce positive results when tested. If the psi phenomena were actually real, scientists believe that the parapsychologists would easily be able to supply prove of their existence. Furthermore, parapsychologists find it unfair the scientific establishment has extremely high standards of evidence for psi phenomena. However, extraordinary evidence is needed to prove extraordinary assertions. The scientific establishment views parapsychology as a pseudoscience because while currently there is no concrete evidence of the existence of psi phenomena, it is impossible to prove that psi phenomena are nonexistent. Additionally, because there are no repeatable paranormal phenomena, the scientific community feels that it is unlikely that such phenomena could exist. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Success of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 Essay The Success of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 Part 1 Karl Marks was not Russian and he died 34 years before the Russian revolution, he was a German who spent most his life in England. The whole world relies on mass media because it is today s way of retrieving information about the world. The media can either make you or break you. In this case, the media made all people of color look like terrorists blaming them for actions of others. Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even though William is not a Muslim, he is stereotyped as a terrorist because of his physical features. For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media provides a unique vantage point for examining how media representations impact both identity and self understanding (Leavitt) which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are most likely shown as 19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and prone to addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped as a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Not only is William stereotyped but so is Fekadu, William s taxi driver. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from Ethiopia, yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head addict on welfare. She begins by defining gallows humor, and it is humor that treats serious, frightening, or painful subject matter in a light or satirical way. Joking about death fits the term most literally, but making fun of life threatening, disastrous, or terrifying situations fits the category as well (Watson 38). The author explains it further by pointing out the distinction between this form of humor and harmless, fun filled humor that might be practiced by medical personnel toward their patients. For instance, Watson uses the real life example of American physician named Hunter Patch Adams, who was the inspiration for the Hollywood movie, Patch Adams, and how he performed various comic antics to entertain and relax his chronically ill patients, including cancer affected children. On the other hand, the author slots gallows humor as a dubious form of fun which is practiced by medical residents among themselves. Gallows humor is not a feel good, Patch Adams kind of humor, but it is not synonymous with all cruel humor, either (Watson 38). At the outset, she uses a somber incident involving a pizza delivery boy who was shot and brought to the emergency room of a particular hospital. The doctors there tried their best, but he passed away, still they loosened up and joked about his death. Through this occurrence, Watson implies that doctors need to lighten up to ease their shock and depression because the boy who died is the one who regularly deliver pizzas to them. I think the motivation for telling the joke was to integrate this terrible event and get through the shift (Watson 44). So, to get over his demise, maintain their mental health, and to treat incoming patients in an enhanced frame of mind, they tried gallows humor. Our terrifying horror movies and books derive from these two men; Edgar Allen Poe and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Although these two authors are different in their techniques of writing, there are two poems that are similar. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and The Raven consists of a bird bringing a bad omen. The situations are different; however, the meanings of the birds are similar. In these two poems, the differences are more apparent; the significance of one being a sea bird and the other a land dweller, the situations of appearance, and the meanings and curses they place upon the cursed. First, Coleridge and Poe create their birds different in the aspect of their dwelling and manner. The sea bird is called the Albatross, in the beginning it is seen as a wonderful and beautiful bird. When the Mariner and his men were out to sea this bird, with a slight body but adorned large wings, flew across the ocean and the ice broke from the ocean. It almost appears as if the bird is innocent, with the description of the bird. Having a frail breast yet the stretching wingspan is strong; for leading those in need, the color of the bird even hints at innocence. Despite the indisputable benefits of marketing to companies and consumers, the occasional antagonistic motives behind its evident necessity is a point of interest because of how marketing approaches are being utilised as a transmission channel for corporations to promote unhealthy competition, such as eliciting the disrepute of another brand or falsifying product specifications for higher turnover, or induce psychological and behavioural change within the society. Nonetheless, marketing fosters innovation, prevents market complacency and functions as a catalyst for the promotion of consumer worthy products and services. The principle basis of a profitable relationship between a company and its consumer audience is marketing. It is therefore important for corporations to conduct appropriate market research to identify the needs of its target market, determine how to prevail over existing competition and analyse potential threats towards productivity and profitability. Marketing provides conceptual frameworks and economic models that allow corporations to estimate its capabilities relevant to the current ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This was a controversial move for the Congress to make, it certainly did not go off without consequences. The Volstead Act, even as concrete as its rules seem, had many loopholes that the American people could abuse. One of the largest and most obvious loopholes was that medicinal alcohol could still be prescribed by physicians. Many people would feign sickness in order to obtain whisky legally and reliably. This caused the sale of medical alcohol to insanely spike in sales, but even with the obvious implications these stats held, the government did not remove whisky as a prescribed medicine. Many farmers would also profit off of alcohol made of grapes and other juices. Since the government couldn t ban fruit juices, they would mix those fruits with a certain dry fruit used to create alcohol. Supplies in which you could easily brew your own alcohol could also be found in common groceries. People even went as far as to joining the congregation to obtain sacramental wine. If one wanted to enjoy their drinking with others, they could just enter one of the many Speakeasies, popping up underground. These secret bars had secret entrances, which could only be accessed with a spoken password. It was said that with every legitimate bar closed, six speakeasies would take it s place. While some made the use of legal loopholes to get their alcohol fix, many turned to crime and subterfuge. People who didn t want to directly get their hands dirty called upon the ... • 30. Symbolism In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls In the memoir, The Glass Castle, it was evident the Glass Castle was not just a physical object itself, but holds a deeper meaning of symbolism towards the author, Jeannette Walls. After completing the book, it has been noted that the Glass Castle symbolizes the constant reminder of Jeannette s hope that one day both her family and house will be in a stable, working position. Throughout the novel, the Glass Castle was vaguely mentioned as the Walls family continued their journey through the United States. However, through their ongoing journey, Jeannette s view of the Glass Castle changed, as it was inevitably just a vision that her father had implanted in her brain but never actually built in reality. According to Jeannette, all of Dad s engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert (Walls 25). Notice how Jeannette describes the Glass Castle as a great, big house instead of simply stating her father was planning on building her family a more improved shelter. As a child, Jeannette saw this Glass Castle as not just an average house, but a mansion for the whole family to thrive in. Towards the middle of the book, the Glass Castle was once again mentioned and was still a plausible idea in Jeannette s mind. Even so much that she and her brother Brian attempted to dig a hole in their backyard as the foundation for the Glass Castle. Despite their efforts, the hole for the Glass Castle s foundation slowly filled with garbage (Walls 155). Not only is the Arena the best preserved Roman monument in Verona, but it was built in the first century AD. The reason behind this cultural monument being a favorite was due to the way it was not broken down and once I stepped foot into the center of the arena, I felt as if I had become apart of what took place years ago within it. Even though the arena is well preserved, a few changes had been made to the center in order for it to keep up with modern day culture. The name, Arena, originated from its central arena that was covered in sand. This famous arena held many gladiator fights when it was first built and now, to keep in touch with the modern day shows that are held in colesseums, operas are hosted. A fun fact about the arena is it was originally built outside of the city walls. It was built in that location to make it easier for people from outside of the city to find it. Religion and the Development of the Western World Religion and the Development of the Western World The accomplishments and success of civilizations are closely linked to their religious outlook and the role of religion in their governments and society. Throughout history rulers have used the influence of religions to control their populations and provide the justification for their power. A society with a greater degree of separation between religion and government promotes a superior level of liberty and creativity amongst its people. By the time of the republic it had developed into an honorific system of ancestor worship that focused on family and the importance of that unit as a model for the republic. The Roman religion came to mirror that of the Greeks, as did so much of their society. Their government maintained a control over religion throughout, however, using laws to promote the worship of some and condemn the worship of other gods. Indeed, after the crises of the late republic one of Augustus actions was to promote a return to the traditional family and religious values by building temples and supporting religious schools. He outlawed new, foreign religions and after his death he was worshiped as a god. This was the beginning of the turn back towards religious autocracy. The emperors became quasi religious figures in life and were objects of popular cult worship after their deaths. This is a rejection of the Hellenic ideal of the greatness of the common man. It promotes the will of a single idealized super elite to the detriment of the populace. By the decline of the western empire the emperors ruled by decree, sending their infallible word down from on high to the masses. The free debate of ideas was dead. This became the religious model propagated in the Byzantine Empire. There all semblance of separation between the state and religion was eliminated.
