Causes Of Social Loafing
Social loafing is defined as the tendency of individuals to put forth less effort when they are part
of a group. Since all of the members in the group are contributing to reach the same goal, each
member will contribute less than if they were working individually. This concept is a huge issue
when people work in groups. Almost everyone has experienced social loafing at some point in
their life, although they may not realize it. There are several hypothesizes causes for social
loafing, as well as several ways to reduce it. The term social loafing was first introduced in 1913
by a researcher named Ringelmann, who conducted a study. His study involved individuals
pulling on a rope, both in a group and individually. He found that the output was less when
people pulled the rope in a group than when they pulled it individually. The results of this study
were replicated in 1974 by Ingham, Levinger, Graves, and Peckham. After the study was
replicated, the term social loafing was developed. Since this experiment showed that social
loafing applies to physical tasks, it was questioned if it then applied to cognitive tasks as well.
Petty, Harkings, Williams, and Latane (1977) conducted an experiment to see if cognitive tasks
were prone to social loafing as well. In their experiment, they divided participants into three groups.
In one group, students were asked to edit a poem, and this group was under the assumption that

that they belong to. Pincus defines three different types of discrimination: Individual, Institutional,
and Structural. Individual discrimination is when one person or a small group of people
discriminate, institutional involves the discrimination that can be found with institutions
themselves, and structural discrimination often seems unintentional. Usually in institutional, there
is a dominant group in control of the institution that discriminates against a minority. It is not rare
to see discrimination occur in education, even though as a society we wish it was a thing of the
past. The discrimination can create vastly different learning environments and experiences for each
student or for varying groups of students, and this can result in an education gap.
Individual discrimination can be seen if a staff member at the school treats a student differently

Boyz in the Hood starts off with the character Tre Styles as a young man who lives in South
Central, Los Angeles with his mom Rita. The social work student viewed this beginning portion of
the movie portraying his young life as a social worker. The social work student noticed that Tre
lived with his motherin an apartment in a rough neighborhood. Tre went to school but had
problems acting out and being the class clown. Tre and the friends he hung around here had foul
language and used profanity as young kids. This is just one example of how Tre s surroundings

a person learns behaviors from observing in their environments. Young Tre Styles learned
