The Importance Of The Insanity Plea
Humans, being the complex creatures that they are, are fully capable of making cognizant, rational
choices, choices which can affect other persons, either in a positive or negative fashion. However, in
some cases, humans are unable to control their own thoughts. Those unable to control their minds are
often referred to as mentally ill, and with that label comes unruly consequences. Because of their
mental status, persons suffering from mental health issues do not have the same ability to cope with
reality or make intentional decisions that have a negative impact. Their inability to process major
decisions can lead to serious crimes being committed without intent. Today, approximately 44 million
American adults suffer from a mental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Movies, television shows, books, and more establish the insanity defense as frequently used. A
misconception about the insanity defense is that a person will plead not guilty by reason of insanity in
order to get away with a crime he or she was fully, mentally and physically, responsible for. However;
the instance of being acquitted due to pleading not guilty by reason of insanity is rare. In order to be
acquitted, the defendant must be clinically diagnosed as insane by a mental health expert. In 1985, out
of one hundred percent of all insanity plea cases, less than ten percent of the defendants were
diagnosed as mentally insane in the states of Michigan, Maine, Minnesota, and Wyoming (Blau 437).
A successful insanity plea is rare; however, if the defendant is found not guilty, he or she is admitted
into an institution where he or she will be monitored until it is concluded that he or she will not be a
danger to himself, herself, or

Compassion Fatigue: Caring for the Caregiver Introduction
Compassion represents an acknowledgement of another s suffering and is accompanied by the
expression of a desire to ease or end that suffering. (Van der Cingal, 2009, p. 124) This is a
fundamental characteristic usually found in health care workers and nurses especially. In one twelve
hour shift, a nurse s job can change from taking vitals and administering medications to performing
life saving measures ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Physical rest, nutrition and exercise are some of these needs and if denied, the body will eventually
become too exhausted to function properly. The most common symptoms of this are fatigue not
relieved with sleep, insomnia and irritability. If left untreated, physical exhaustion can lead to physical
ailments such as dizziness, colds, headaches, chronic pain, and digestive problems and even impaired
functioning of other body systems. (Espeland, 2006, p. 180) Emotional Exhaustion
Similar to physical exhaustion, emotional exhaustion results from depletion of emotional resources
and failure to restore one s own emotional equilibrium. (Moore, 2009, p. 1) In today s busy society the
demands of life, job and family can be excessive and overwhelming. Combine these demands with the
additional stressors of caring for another person or persons, increased demands of productivity with
decreased personnel and the unrealistic expectations of one s self or others and place all of this burden
on one person, this would adequately describe the 21st century nurse. Nurses are continually engaged
in emotional relationships with patients and their families which call upon the nurse to be in a constant
supporting role. One reaches emotional exhaustion when this burden becomes too heavy to carry

Arbitration Clause And Limitation Clause
Arbitration Clause, Attorneys clause and Limitation to liability clauses
Arbitration section
An arbitration clause is a section in a contract that requires the parties to decide their differences over
an arbitration process. Though such a clause may or might not agree that arbitration happen inside a
specific authority, it always binds the parties to a type of resolution outside of the courts, and is
therefore considered a kind of forum selection clause.
The federal government in The United States has spoken a rule of support of arbitration clauses,
because they want to reduce the load on court systems to resolve arguments. It is found in the Federal
Arbitration Act, which licenses required and compulsory arbitration for which under the ... Show more

It can be an exclusion clause or a term in a contract that pursues to limit the rights of the parties to the

in house where they excelled, while noncore tasks were outsourced to external suppliers with superior

considered non core, and Ford has outsourced production to number of external suppliers, outside the
United States. Today, about 70% of typical Ford vehicle comes from parts, components and services
purchased from external suppliers. Even white collar jobs and design of future vehicles are also
outsourced. IT sector has also been outsourced. Many businesses in United States manufacture their
product overseas. This involves manufacturing products outside United States where the labor cost is
cheaper. Because of cheap labor, it is often more economical for a U.S. company to manufacture
overseas and pay the shipping costs than to manufacture in the United States. For a company, the
savings may be substantial. However, there are negative impacts on U.S. employment, as many jobs in
the United States are being outsourced and replaced by overseas positions. The manufacturers
outsource production projects to save time, money or resources. The manufacturing is outsourced so
as to remain competitive and maintain a steady work flow. Without outsourcing, manufacturing costs
could escalate to the point at which no product would sell and all employees would have no work.

The Battle Over American Dietary Guidelines
The battle over American dietary guidelines has been raging for decades. One of the most
controversial issues in nutrition? Fat and sugar. For the past thirty years, we ve been instructed that a
low fat, high carb diet is the best way to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle. In 1955, US
President Dwight Eisenhower suffered a heart attack, and worked with his chief physician to
encourage Americans to cut down on fat and cholesterol, stating that this would be the best way to
avoid future heart disease. The first official government dietary guidelines were published in 1980,
and they too advised Americans to limit fat and increase carbs. And though this diet surged in
popularity (Remember the low fat craze in the 80s and 90s?), many are convinced it s actually the
exact opposite of how we should be eating, and that sugar is biggest problem when it comes to weight
gain and health problems. A recent article in The Guardian explores this controversy, and ventures to
explain how we could have gotten so tangled up in this wild web of fat versus sugar. The article
begins by introducing two important figures: Robert Lustig and John Yudkin. Lustig is something of a
celebrity; his 90 minute talk titled Sugar: The Bitter Truth, has been viewed more than six million
times on YouTube, and argues that fructose is the culprit behind a majority of American health
problems. And while Lustig originally believed his idea to be revolutionary, he soon came to find that

Janie comes to the realization that she is interested in Tea Cake, but does not want anyone to know.
She is insecure and embarrassed because she is nearly fifteen years older than him; at the time, it was
unusual for women to be older than their spouses, let alone by twelve years. For the most part, men
were older than their wives to show dominance and protection. Janie believes that people would find
their relationship inappropriate. Tea Cake, however, treats her as if she was a young woman again,
showing by the way he flirts and jokes around. She is comfortable with him because he is not
pressuring her to marry again, like everyone else is, but instead gives her time to think about what she
is doing, no matter how eager he is. He is trying

Janis Joplin s Influence On Rock Music
When we think of rock music, we typically think of musicians like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jimi
Hendrix, and similar artists. There s no problem with that. They all influenced this genre alot and
inspired many other artists, but sadly, we never think of the many women that shaped this music
scene. Women like Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Karen Carpenter, and many others. So, who were these
musicians and how did they influence the genre? To start, Janis Joplin was one of the biggest rock
stars of her time, along with musicians like The Velvet Underground and The Who. She was born on
January 19, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas and had an early love of music, especially the blues. Some of
her main influences were Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and Leadbelly.

Christina Rossetti Remember Essay
After reading Christina Rossetti s poem Remember , it is evident to one s eyes that Rossetti is
expressing to her loved one that she wants to be remembered when she passes and wishes for him not
to be grieving of her presence being no more, but yet, wants him to smile of the memories that they
once shared. Rossetti expresses how she desires to be remembered by her lover, and does this by the
choice of diction, her utilization of syntax, and the tone in which she presents to the reader. In Rossetti
s poem Remember , the poet expresses herself and her work in a very neutral way. Although she does

line 6, it states You tell me of our future that you planned: only remember me; Parallel structure is thus
shown in that line. Aforementioned, the narrator wants to be sure that when she does pass, her beloved
remembers her. There is a continuous repetition of the words Remember me... There is also a

the words gone and away are repeated and the word far is added into the ending of that sentence to

Salt in Moderation is Good for the Body
Salt in moderation is actually good for the body. It helps with certain stomach acids, maintains the
balance of fluids, helps in transmitting nerve impulses, and helps muscle control. The kidneys balance
the amount of salt stored by the body for optimum health. If, however, too much sodium is stored in
the body, and the kidneys cannot get rid of it properly; it will cause serious health complications.
Over use of table salt contributes leads to retaining fluid in the body, which in turn contributes to high
blood pressure and heart disease. These are only some of the complications occurring with overuse of
salt. Brittle bones and kidney disease are other examples of consuming too much salt.
The average person needs only 1,500 mg of salt in their daily diet but consumes 3,500 mg of salt or
more every day. Some people do not realize that processed foods and fast foods are very high in salt
and salt additives. For example, pizza, and cold cuts, bacon, and even bread contain high amounts of
salt. Some natural foods contain salt like vegetables and dairy products. Using table salt for cooking
and flavoring foods can have as mc as 1,000 mg of salt in one tablespoon of soy sauce and other
condiments, which are added after cooking. Using sea salt together with different herbs and spices
help lower amount of salt consumed every day and, by using herbs and spices to substitute salt
completely, one can develop better flavor. Natural herbs have many health benefits. Take

What Does Masculine Mean To Me
Masculine to me means that not only are you physically strong mentally and emotionally strong. It
also means that you carry yourself with confidence and humility and compassion. To me it s important
that a male is able to express his emotions without feeling weak. To me, masculine, means to respect
others no matter what circumstance and be responsible.
I get my idea of what it means to be a good man from my own believes, some of my family ideas, and
from the Bible. I believe that these characteristics decide what a man is: Educated, hard working,
compassionate, humble, taking responsibility for their own , loving, and brave. Even being
emotionally vulnerable is another characteristic that describes a man to me.

Economic Development Strategy For The City Of Sydney
Basic Summary
Sydney is Australia s worldwide city, and the main learning based economy in the country. More than
$100 billion for each annum is produced in Sydney. That is more than half of what the whole mining
part creates, and double the span of the horticultural division at the farm gate.
In the course of the most recent five years our city economy has demonstrated its flexibility by
withstanding the worldwide financial recession. About 2000 organisations were added to the city since
2007. Major urban restoration ventures over the City of Sydney are giving occupations and lodging.
Green Square, Australia s biggest urban redevelopment task, is only 3.5kms from the downtown area.
The $8 billion redevelopment will give homes to 11,000 new inhabitants and 22,000 new labourers.
Economic Development Strategy for the City
The City of Sydney s 10 year Economic Development Strategy will help convey a realistic vision for a
significantly more dynamic, earth feasible economy, and a liveable city that works for inhabitants,
labourers, guests and understudies. Activity arrangements will bolster our current monetary qualities,
for example, the fund, tourism and retail areas; and develop new, rising parts, for example, the evening
time economy and green economy divisions. We are as of now putting $1.9 billion in a 10 year
framework project including Light Rail and the change of George Street; diminishing administrative

Afternoon Tea Tea Drinking Ritual of The British s Patricians
British are illustrious as a fan of tea. England is the country outside of Asia, which is known as the
world s largest tea consumer. Since it was first introduced in the 17th century, the popularity of tea in
Britain is so shot. This popularity led to the motto of tea time which eventually became an essential
activity in the lives of the British. British predilection to drink tea evolved a tradition of drinking tea in
the afternoon which is known as the Afternoon Tea . The characteristic of this tea related ritual is the
tea served with snacks that arranged in the three tier tray.

Essay Sun chief
Different cultures and religions have many different customs and rituals. In Islam it is common
practice for women to be covered from head to toe. In Tibetan Buddhism it is common for devotees to
practice asceticism. In Hopi culture and religious tradition food and sex play large and important roles,
although in different situations the roles may be completely opposite.
In Sun Chief particularly the chapter called the Making of a Man we can see that food is very
important spiritually to the Hopi people. In the Wowochim ceremony each boy is given their manhood
name over a mother corn ear (159). In each of a dozen or more ceremonies we see that certain
practices such as the sprinkling of corn (159, 160, 162, etc.), or the eating of ... Show more content on

This feast celebration suggests that in the case of food, while there are certain sacred times which
require food to be abstained from, for the large part the Hopi consider food to be something given to
them to enjoy and indulge in freely.
Sex is mentioned in Sun Chief along much the same lines as is food. During the Medicine Ceremony,
for example, on the seventh day which is spent making pahos, or special offerings to the Gods for rain
and good harvest, our narrator states that If a sexual thought had come into my mind, I would have
tried to free myself of it and would not have mentioned the subject to a fellow member even to relieve
him of hiccoughs an excellent remedy on other occasions (170). From this statement we can draw two
conclusions about Hopi thoughts on sex. First, while sex does not seem to be abstained from during all
ceremonies, during certain especially important spiritual events, sex is considered improper. Second,
by referring to discussion of sex as something as mundane as a cure for hiccoughs, we can see that sex
is in most circumstances something indulged in often and without any feelings of shame or sin.
Looking at the Hopi attitudes toward food and sex as seen in Sun Chief, it is safe to say that the Hopi,
under everyday circumstances, are a people who follow their natural wants and needs. The concept of
self restraint from such natural desires, while not entirely foreign, is not something the

Comparing Satire In Candide And Gulliver
Fundamentally, the main two characters in these books Voltaire s Candide and Swift s Gulliver s
Travels (Candide and Gulliver) respectively have been used as units or vehicles for satire throughout
the works. It is therefore of paramount importance to note that, Gulliver and Candide serve as ironies
in these books. The books uses simple language but is characterized by irony as shown by the actions,
practices, and behaviors of the characters. Also of importance to note is that, although the author
exposes the two main characters to positions that do not best fit them in terms of their actions, the
reader must be made to understand that the characters remain oblivious and naïve to their
circumstances. According to the nature of the two literature works, I think the reader must be made to
understand that, the two books are used to criticize human weakness by using some names such as
Yahoos and Horse to describe human and the society. In the Voltaire s Candide, the main character is
exposed to all sorts of ridiculous circumstances which excellently work to paint a clear picture of the
intentions of the author who suffered a lot in his life as he was forced to exile in England, and

managed to smuggle a .44 Magnum onto the plane with him. Not long after the plane had taken off
from the runway the recorder that is in the cockpit recorded gunshots being fired where the passengers
were. After these shots were heard Burke was heard talking and not long after his voice was overheard
on the recording Flight 1771 went down into the hillside in San Luis Obispo County (Warder, 2014).
According to 10 Frightening Cases of Workplace Violence, at the site where the plane crashed there
was a note that was discovered in an airsickness bag (2014). This note which was from Burke and

Tying the knot at national parks
Planning a fall wedding? Think grand. Grand Canyon or Grand Teton National Park, maybe. Outdoor
loving couples and duos seeking a dramatic backdrop without a daunting florist bill are turning to
national parks for ceremonies. I do locales range from Hawaii Volcanoes on the Big Island to
Independence Park in downtown Philadelphia, says Carol Anthony, a spokeswoman for the National
Park Service. Some parks issue fact sheets on locations, regulations and permit procedures. There s a
wedding almost every day at Shoshone Point, and there were 66 weddings elsewhere in the Grand
Canyon so far this year, says Nan Stricklin, who issues the permits. We get people from London to
New Zealand. I just had a call from a wedding consultant in Australia who ... Show more content on

Karen Brody, the minister/wedding planner of Teton Mountain Weddings, Jackson Hole, Wyo., says
couples wed on river rafts, backpack trips, horseback rides, sleigh rides and float trips. I did two
weddings on dog sleds last winter. I just don t jump out of airplanes or do technical climbs up rock
faces, says Brody, who has tied the knot for 80 couples in Grand Teton and Yellowstone this year.
Many parks, like Grand Teton, issue permits free. Others charge nominal fees such as $ 25 at
Yellowstone, $ 25 $ 80 at Grand Canyon, or $ 68 $ 192 at Shenandoah National Park. Yosemite,
which charges $ 100, has issued 75 permits so far in 96, many for Bridal Veil Falls or Cathedral
Beach. People seem to feel that the structure of a church isn t what they are after. They want God s
natural cathedral, says Jeannie McCamish, a minister and wilderness wedding consultant for Sierra

no quick picnic. Beyond the basics a local marriage license, a permit from the park, a licensed person

Religion Has A Major Influence On Human Values Essay
Religion has long played a great importance in countless lives throughout the ages. Yet, some believe
it to be one of a meaningless value. It is true that countless wars have been fought in the name of some
higher being and great atrocities committed and not expected, but one cannot deny that religion has a
major influence on human values learned throughout the ages. So what happens when you come to the
terms that life is meaningless or simply nothing? This is what the old waiter believes in A Clean, Well
lighted Place. He recites a prayer at the end of the story, replacing most of the words with nada the
Spanish word for nothing. The nada prayer of nothing ties into the over arching idea of the story of
nothingness and loneliness in daily life, along with the despair that must be endured.
The old man embodies the nothingness that surrounds human life. The old deaf man is a lonely
drinker that sits in the shadow that casted itself into the café. He is the only one left in the café as he
liked to sit late because at night it was quiet and he felt the difference. (559 Hemingway) The old man
comes here to escape his loneliness, even though the place is practically empty. When the waiters
began to talk about him, some important information is disclosed. He tried to commit suicide because
he was in despair, he has a niece and owns plenty of money. (559 Hemingway) This paints the old
man as being in a state of despair and loneliness, even though he has the money

Taste Buds Is Bad
Have you ever wondered why the things that taste bad to you may taste good to someone else? Why is
that if we all have taste buds? The question is, are our taste buds the same, do our taste buds trigger
the same taste. I have a theory that the replacement of our taste buds gives people different flavors in
their mouths, such as something that s too sweet, sour, bitter, or salty to us may not be to others,
because every two weeks or so, the taste buds that are coming into your mouth may not be in someone
else s mouth. In this experiment, I will be studying independent variable, the same and different taste
buds. The dependent variable would be the different taste buds, and is that what causes us to not like
the things others may like. For

Consider The Lobster By David Foster Wallace Analysis
American Novelist, essayist and short story author David Foster Wallace uses his essay Consider the
Lobster to tell the reader about his thought provoking visit to the Maine Lobster Festival. Wallace
wrote this essay to show his thought process dealing with the moral ambiguity of cooking lobster, and
the research he did to further understand the subject. He primarily uses an informational tone with a
heavy emphasis on pathos. He does a fairly good job remaining unbiased and showing the
counterarguments.
Wallace was sent to the Maine Lobster Festival by Gourmet Magazine, he was tasked simply to write
about his experience there. He took this as an opportunity and decided that the risk he was taking in
posing this question to the readers of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following this point he points out that perhaps lobsters understand pain but they don t dislike it and
how pain is not distressing them (Wallace 63). He reinstates the fact that there is a clear difference in
pain as a purely neurological event from pain as actual suffering , the latter requiring an emotional
component (Wallace 36). Later on he states that this means that although lobster s experience pain it is
not a struggle based on discomfort but more of a preference. More akin to you preferring to sit in a
certain spot around the table. These are used to inform the reader of the physical aspects of the lobster
that affect the overall moral ambiguity of the subject.
In his closing statements he takes the time to throw some more thought provoking sentences in, calling
out a part of being a real gourmet (Wallace 64). Wallace wonders if future generations might look
back and see our current eating practices similarly to how we see tribal sacrifices today. I see this as
an extreme analogy but it has its use in this essay, it brings out the thought that perhaps we should take
a step back from our food and think about

Xaverian Values Analysis
The Xaverian values are an integral piece of the mission of Good Counsel and, ideally, of its students
as well. These values are: humility, simplicity, compassion, zeal, and trust. Throughout my service,
some which was completed to fulfill the school requirement and some which was not, and any
leadership opportunities I participated in, I was, at the time unknowingly, striving to fulfill these
values. To truly serve, or to truly lead, the understanding and application of these values is crucial. A
specific instance of leadership and service in which my demonstration of these values is evident was
my volunteer work with Easter Seals. I was a respite volunteer with Easter Seals. This meant that I
worked one on one with disabled children from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I demonstrated this value while volunteering with Easter Seals by freeing the lives of the parents of
children who participated in the respite trips from a good deal of complexity. Through volunteering
with this organization, as a whole, we were able to alleviate complexity and simplify, if only for a
while, the lives of these parents so that they were able to accomplish other things or take a much
needed break. This opportunity to participate as a volunteer on respite trips led to think about and later
attempt to display the Xaverian value of humility. Being a part of an organization like this one
prompted me to consider that I had a part in it, but that I was by no means the most important part.
Realizing this led to the demonstration of this value by taking care to fulfill my responsibilities to the
best of my abilities while also keeping in mind that I was making a difference but I was not the
deciding factor and that that was okay. Compassion is a Xaverian value that I found fairly easy to
demonstrate in the context of Easter Seals. One of the reasons I decided to volunteer with this
organization was the fact that it helped people that I had a huge amount of sympathy for and that I
wanted to help. I was able to help make the lives of the families who participated in the respite trips
better and easier, for the kids on the trips by giving them the chance to experience things they might
not otherwise have had the chance to and for the parents by allowing them the time to accomplish
other things or some much needed time to recharge. This service also presented me with the
opportunity to display the Xaverian value of zeal. Easter Seals serves a cause that I believe in and
volunteering with them allows me to also serve this cause and to do so with fervor. This fervor is what
motivated me to continue to volunteer there and to make sure that every time I did, my responsibilities
were fulfilled to

Compare And Contrast Ninja And Samurai
What do Historians Know about Ninja and Samurai? What s the first thing that comes to mind when
you think about ninja? A samurai? Chances are you think of them as two completely separate things;
one a superhumanly stealthy and quiet assassin, and one an honorable swordsman. The two can t
possibly go together! you might think. Well sorry, because although seemingly very different (and in
many cases are) there are some characteristics that ninja and samurai share and some they do not. First
let s learn about the sneakier of the two; the ninja. Ninja, or a less commonly used term shinobi
meaning those who act in stealth , were low class mercenaries who even though were considered a
low class alternative to samurai, were often more practical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Not going to get off topic here, but the shogun actually had more power than the actual emperor, who
was mainly a figurehead and sat back while the shogun, who was the head of the military, basically
ran the empire. Now let s learn about the samurai. Samurai were top of the line, powerful mercenaries
who were the highest ranking caste of the Edo Period (1604 1867) and had a reputation for their strict
code of honor called the bushido (Samurai). The bushido incorporates many Confucian elements such
as loyalty to one s master, self discipline and respectful, ethical behavior (Samurai). Much like the
ninja, samurai had a wide array of weapons including, but not limited to, bows and arrows, spears,
guns, and their main weapon; the sword

the company. They believe that the matrix organizational structure enhances responsibility and

Essay On Congress Term Limits
Consequences of Term Limits on the United States Congress Imposing term limits on the United
States Congress could potentially lead to a massive reduction of knowledgeable politicians in the
American government, thus resulting in a fatal blow to the future of American progression. When term
limits are imposed, it has been shown that legislatures eventually lose valuable leaders, that have the
experience of law making and representing their districts with excellence. The national legislation also
would willingly increase the power held by the Executive Branch, this intern could compromise the
checks and balances system. Imagine if a congressman could only serve a total of six years. They
would strive to voice their constituent s concerns while continuing to draft laws and reform the
government. When it comes to the congressman s final term in office, we will find that a vast majority
of legislatures may turn into a lame duck. Just as the President of the United States becomes a lame
duck in their final years in office, the congressman may be prompted to accomplish little to no tasks
and seek to enjoy their final days in office . Furthermore, legislators without term limits have proven
to be very active in resolving issues for their constituents and ... Show more content on

Analysis Of Blood Meridian Or The Evening Redness Of The West
Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West, is a novel written by an author by the name of
Cormac McCarthy. Cormac McCarthy wrote this to show a teenage runaway perspective of living on
your own during the late 1800 s. Throughout this novel, McCarthy shows the reader the feeling of
being in hell and describing a kid s journey through hell. This eye opening novel takes place in Texas,
Mexico and the American Southwest, Circa. This historical fiction novel is surprisingly accurate when
describing the events that occurred during the situations in the Southwestern U.S. and Mexico around
the 1850 s. McCarthy s Blood Meridian contains a lot of violent and bloody events that build up to the
subjugation of the Apaches, as well as other Native tribes, and the southwestern expansion of the
United States of America. All these events are proven to be an accurate description of the way
Indigenous people were treated and how they lived throughout this time. The story Blood Meridian or
the Evening Redness of the West, explains a couple of the major frontier themes of a man s kinship for
violence, religion, and power in the Western American History. These can be found as the theme
depending on the way the reader interprets it. The story represents the traditions of the American
Southwest, as the kid meets different people with different perspectives on life. This novel describes a
journey of a young boy, who McCarthy doesn t give a name to, but refers to the character as the

Play Analysis – Sure Thing by David Ivis Essay example
Play Analysis Sure Thing by David Ivis
The Setting of Sure Thing by David Ivis is important in terms of setting the mood as well as the
context for the play s main conflict. Sure Thing is set in a café where the the two main characters, Bill
and Betty, awkwardly encounter one another. During their encounter, a ring of a bell continues to
disrupt their connection. Despite the ringing bell, or because of the ringing bell, the two characters are
able to establish a connection. The fact that they are ultimately able to establish a connection suggests
many thing about relationships, such as that timing can play a major role in either beginning or not
beginning a relationship. For instance, the bell (and the bell s timing) suggests that ... Show more

Truly, there is no protagonist or antagonist in this play insofar as either Bill or Betty being able to be
considered one or the other. The play begins with Bill walking up to Betty and asking if the chair next
to her is taken. She replies that the chair is taken. However, the bell immediately rings and Bill
restates the question. This time, Betty says that it is not taken, but that she is expecting someone.
Again, the bell rings, and Bill asks if the chair is taken again. This process continues, indicating a
change in circumstances each time the bell rings, until Bill is able to take a seat next to Betty. What
the bell does is it allows the circumstances to change. The bell also allows the conditions that might
negatively affect one entering a relationship with another to be changed to accommodate the budding
relationship. This process continues throughout the entire play until the main differences between the
two (differences that would have prevented a significant connection) are entirely erased and reversed.
After beginning one way, repairing the situation, and starting over, the two realize that they are perfect
companions, and agree to fall in love.
It is difficult to isolate the play s conflict to anything other than on a thematic level. Every time a
conflict has a potential of presenting itself, the fantasy element

  • 2. The Importance Of The Insanity Plea Humans, being the complex creatures that they are, are fully capable of making cognizant, rational choices, choices which can affect other persons, either in a positive or negative fashion. However, in some cases, humans are unable to control their own thoughts. Those unable to control their minds are often referred to as mentally ill, and with that label comes unruly consequences. Because of their mental status, persons suffering from mental health issues do not have the same ability to cope with reality or make intentional decisions that have a negative impact. Their inability to process major decisions can lead to serious crimes being committed without intent. Today, approximately 44 million American adults suffer from a mental ... In order to be acquitted, the defendant must be clinically diagnosed as insane by a mental health expert. In 1985, out of one hundred percent of all insanity plea cases, less than ten percent of the defendants were diagnosed as mentally insane in the states of Michigan, Maine, Minnesota, and Wyoming (Blau 437). Physical rest, nutrition and exercise are some of these needs and if denied, the body will eventually become too exhausted to function properly. The most common symptoms of this are fatigue not relieved with sleep, insomnia and irritability. If left untreated, physical exhaustion can lead to physical ailments such as dizziness, colds, headaches, chronic pain, and digestive problems and even impaired functioning of other body systems. (Espeland, 2006, p. 180) Emotional Exhaustion Similar to physical exhaustion, emotional exhaustion results from depletion of emotional resources and failure to restore one s own emotional equilibrium. (Moore, 2009, p. 1) In today s busy society the demands of life, job and family can be excessive and overwhelming. Combine these demands with the additional stressors of caring for another person or persons, increased demands of productivity with decreased personnel and the unrealistic expectations of one s self or others and place all of this burden on one person, this would adequately describe the 21st century nurse. • 8. The Battle Over American Dietary Guidelines The battle over American dietary guidelines has been raging for decades. One of the most controversial issues in nutrition? Fat and sugar. For the past thirty years, we ve been instructed that a low fat, high carb diet is the best way to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle. In 1955, US President Dwight Eisenhower suffered a heart attack, and worked with his chief physician to encourage Americans to cut down on fat and cholesterol, stating that this would be the best way to avoid future heart disease. The first official government dietary guidelines were published in 1980, and they too advised Americans to limit fat and increase carbs. And though this diet surged in popularity (Remember the low fat craze in the 80s and 90s?), many are convinced it s actually the exact opposite of how we should be eating, and that sugar is biggest problem when it comes to weight gain and health problems. A recent article in The Guardian explores this controversy, and ventures to explain how we could have gotten so tangled up in this wild web of fat versus sugar. The article begins by introducing two important figures: Robert Lustig and John Yudkin. Lustig is something of a celebrity; his 90 minute talk titled Sugar: The Bitter Truth, has been viewed more than six million times on YouTube, and argues that fructose is the culprit behind a majority of American health problems. And while Lustig originally believed his idea to be revolutionary, he soon came to find that a British ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Salt in Moderation is Good for the Body Salt in moderation is actually good for the body. It helps with certain stomach acids, maintains the balance of fluids, helps in transmitting nerve impulses, and helps muscle control. The kidneys balance the amount of salt stored by the body for optimum health. If, however, too much sodium is stored in the body, and the kidneys cannot get rid of it properly; it will cause serious health complications. Over use of table salt contributes leads to retaining fluid in the body, which in turn contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease. These are only some of the complications occurring with overuse of salt. Brittle bones and kidney disease are other examples of consuming too much salt. Some people do not realize that processed foods and fast foods are very high in salt and salt additives. For example, pizza, and cold cuts, bacon, and even bread contain high amounts of salt. Low Tea is the tea culture of the upper class, while High Tea is akin to the lower middle class. Basically, this naming is based on the type of table that used. • 18. Essay Sun chief Different cultures and religions have many different customs and rituals. In Islam it is common practice for women to be covered from head to toe. In Tibetan Buddhism it is common for devotees to practice asceticism. In Hopi culture and religious tradition food and sex play large and important roles, although in different situations the roles may be completely opposite. In Sun Chief particularly the chapter called the Making of a Man we can see that food is very important spiritually to the Hopi people. In the Wowochim ceremony each boy is given their manhood name over a mother corn ear (159). In each of a dozen or more ceremonies we see that certain practices such as the sprinkling of corn (159, 160, 162, etc.), or the eating of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This feast celebration suggests that in the case of food, while there are certain sacred times which require food to be abstained from, for the large part the Hopi consider food to be something given to them to enjoy and indulge in freely. Sex is mentioned in Sun Chief along much the same lines as is food. During the Medicine Ceremony, for example, on the seventh day which is spent making pahos, or special offerings to the Gods for rain and good harvest, our narrator states that If a sexual thought had come into my mind, I would have tried to free myself of it and would not have mentioned the subject to a fellow member even to relieve him of hiccoughs an excellent remedy on other occasions (170). From this statement we can draw two conclusions about Hopi thoughts on sex. First, while sex does not seem to be abstained from during all ceremonies, during certain especially important spiritual events, sex is considered improper. Second, by referring to discussion of sex as something as mundane as a cure for hiccoughs, we can see that sex is in most circumstances something indulged in often and without any feelings of shame or sin. Looking at the Hopi attitudes toward food and sex as seen in Sun Chief, it is safe to say that the Hopi, under everyday circumstances, are a people who follow their natural wants and needs. The concept of self restraint from such natural desires, while not entirely foreign, is not something the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparing Satire In Candide And Gulliver Fundamentally, the main two characters in these books Voltaire s Candide and Swift s Gulliver s Travels (Candide and Gulliver) respectively have been used as units or vehicles for satire throughout the works. It is therefore of paramount importance to note that, Gulliver and Candide serve as ironies in these books. The books uses simple language but is characterized by irony as shown by the actions, practices, and behaviors of the characters. Also of importance to note is that, although the author exposes the two main characters to positions that do not best fit them in terms of their actions, the reader must be made to understand that the characters remain oblivious and naïve to their circumstances. According to the nature of the two literature works, I think the reader must be made to understand that, the two books are used to criticize human weakness by using some names such as Yahoos and Horse to describe human and the society. In the Voltaire s Candide, the main character is exposed to all sorts of ridiculous circumstances which excellently work to paint a clear picture of the intentions of the author who suffered a lot in his life as he was forced to exile in England, and imprisoned for a long time. ... It is true that countless wars have been fought in the name of some higher being and great atrocities committed and not expected, but one cannot deny that religion has a major influence on human values learned throughout the ages. So what happens when you come to the terms that life is meaningless or simply nothing? This is what the old waiter believes in A Clean, Well lighted Place. He recites a prayer at the end of the story, replacing most of the words with nada the Spanish word for nothing. The nada prayer of nothing ties into the over arching idea of the story of nothingness and loneliness in daily life, along with the despair that must be endured. The old man embodies the nothingness that surrounds human life. The old deaf man is a lonely drinker that sits in the shadow that casted itself into the café. He primarily uses an informational tone with a heavy emphasis on pathos. He does a fairly good job remaining unbiased and showing the counterarguments. Throughout my service, some which was completed to fulfill the school requirement and some which was not, and any leadership opportunities I participated in, I was, at the time unknowingly, striving to fulfill these values. To truly serve, or to truly lead, the understanding and application of these values is crucial. This opportunity to participate as a volunteer on respite trips led to think about and later attempt to display the Xaverian value of humility. Being a part of an organization like this one prompted me to consider that I had a part in it, but that I was by no means the most important part. Realizing this led to the demonstration of this value by taking care to fulfill my responsibilities to the best of my abilities while also keeping in mind that I was making a difference but I was not the deciding factor and that that was okay. Compassion is a Xaverian value that I found fairly easy to demonstrate in the context of Easter Seals. One of the reasons I decided to volunteer with this organization was the fact that it helped people that I had a huge amount of sympathy for and that I wanted to help. I was able to help make the lives of the families who participated in the respite trips better and easier, for the kids on the trips by giving them the chance to experience things they might not otherwise have had the chance to and for the parents by allowing them the time to accomplish other things or some much needed time to recharge.
