Hellenistic Skepticism Analysis
This essay will be exploring the Hellenistic Philosophical movement of Skepticism in its beginnings
in academia as well as the teachings and positions of Pyrrhonist skeptics. Hellenistic skepticism at its
core is striving to Suspended judgment , as well as question the basis of truth. In accordance to this
proverbial philosophical quest for truth, the Hellenistic skeptic would take a different path compared
to their contemporary schools of the thought, by negating perceptual belief, and not affirming
anything. To these ancient skeptics this will lead the philosopher down the path to Suspended
Judgement in which, they seek. This Suspended Judgement will bring tranquility to the mind or at
least these ancient Pyrrhonist skeptics believed this to be so, thus this being the key reason why this is
the central goal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Arcesilaus core tenants of thought are as followed (i) his dialectical method, (ii) discussion of whether
there is a criterion of truth, and (iii) his defense of the skeptic s ability to act. (SEP) Arcesilaus often
uses the same dialectical method that was originated with Socrates, however Arcesilaus took the
skeptical approach to this method with the goal to weed out Dogmatic justifications and conclusions
on reality. His criterion of truth, which often was in objection to the stoic tradition, as well as most
other Hellenistic schools of thought, besides of course the cynics. However, the skeptic s approach to
truth is that of trying to gain the most objective answer, often by refuting arguments made earlier in
order to see all sides of the question, thus having no true answer but instead a multitude of ideas that
the Hellenistic skeptic would is both true but also false. Arcesilaus would also argue that there could
not be a criterion of truth. Often arguing against the stoic claim of Cognitive impressions for the
skeptics. His main disagreement is if there is impressions of this type. Due to

Losing My Best Friend To A Monster
Losing my Best Friend to a Monster Gracie and I had been best friends since the first grade. We were
in third grade when she started missing a lot of school. I had been wondering for a couple weeks why
she hadn t been in school. I had no idea what could have been wrong with her. Even on the days she
would come to school she would end up going home sick because she wasn t feeling well. It was
almost the end of our third grade year and I couldn t stop wondering what was going on with her.
There were three days until school was over when my other best friend Rachael called me. She was
crying. I asked her what was wrong. She struggles to speak stuttering she said, My mom and I were
just at the ice cream shop and Gracie was there with her mom. I was wondering why she was crying
trying to figure out what was going on. I asked What s wrong? What is it? Is there something wrong
with Gracie? That s when I heard the bitter words. Gracie has kidney cancer. I dropped the phone and
began to cry. I was scared to death. Over that summer I rarely got to hang out with her. She always
had doctors appointments or she had nurses coming to her house and she wasn t allowed to have
friends over. When school started up I barely got to talk to her she was going through Chemotherapy
treatments and wasn t allowed to be near people. She didn t come back to school until fifth grade and
by then our friendship had almost completely faded away. After a few months of school Gracie and I

What Role Does Morality Play In A Utopian Society
The concept of utopia is one which has many differing connotations and is therefore also one which
cannot be confined to one interpretation alone. The term is commonly used to represent a community
or society that, in theory, possesses highly desirable or near perfect qualities; however, these
encompassing ideals, which arguably place emphasis on egalitarian principles of equality, are
implemented in a number of ways and are subsequently based on varying ideologies, thus insisting on
varying views of morality. The word itself, which was first coined by Sir Thomas More in the early
sixteenth century and used to describe a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean, was taken from
the Greek οὐ ( not ) and τόπος ( place ), literally translating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The task at hand is to establish the perception of a utopic past, and therefore it is with regard to these
two contrasting notions of utopia that I will be considering the ways in which both William Blake s
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Algernon Charles Swinburne s Hermaphroditus seek to expose
and challenge the mechanisms of traditional views regarding spiritualism and the physical form, as
well as critiquing the mode of normative sexuality and representations of the body. Another important
concept to consider alongside this is that of dystopia, which is characterized by dehumanization,
totalitarian governments, and all matters associated with a cataclysmic decline in society. Dystopic
societies are usually set in the future and provide an antonymic, frightening opposition to the general
concept of utopia. Rather than portraying an idyllic state of civilisation which promises an exit from
the cycle of life and death, the term dystopia is used to draw attention to real world issues which if
unaddressed could potentially lead to such a dystopia like

Strength And Weaknesses Of Unitary Government In The...
The United States of America declared freedom from Great Britain in 1776. There were thirteen
colonies that decided to arrange a necessary government. After battling the difficulties of living under
a monarchy, the Founding Fathers have set up a Federation with ideas of foreign governments: unitary
and confederal. The American Federalism government, Unitary, and Confederal government have
strength and weaknesses in running countries. Countries such as Switzerland and Cuba use a Unitarian
government system (Unitary State Countries, 2015 2018). A Unitary government is very small
centralized and controls the legal and moral legislation for both the state and the country
(Apecsecadmin 2015). The most damaging result of this system is the lack of clear communication
between the government and citizens. This type of government cannot identify or respond quickly to a
direct issue within a local city or state. The advantages, however on the other hand do allow for
prompt judgments for the entire country, this includes passing laws and design a budget. ... Show more

The Confederal system was made up the first thirteen colonies that saw themselves as their own
countries. The states had the ability to create treaties with each other. The Articles of Confederal were
able to win the war against Britain and declare national freedom. The advantage and disadvantage of a
confederal system is to avert a strong central government. The lack of a strong government causes a
loose relationship between the states, thus the inability to enforce tax collections or laws. A weak
government on the other hand, cannot abuse the powers causing a tyranny ruling of the individual
states (Kelly 2017). The vision of the confederal system was to keep the power at home and allow
states to share directly with the citizens. This form of government is considered the transformation

Essay On Leopold II Of Belgium
King Leopold II of Belgium was born on April 9th, 1935. When Leopold was born, Belgium itself was
only about five years old! Leopold became the oldest son of Belgium I that was alive. Leopold I was
the very first king of Belgium, with his second wife, Louise Marie of Orléans being queen. Leopold II
became the Duke of Brabant in 1846 as well as serving in the Belgian army. In 1853, Leopold II a
beautiful woman married Marie Henriette. She was the daughter of the Austrian archduke Joseph, who
was the palatine of Hungary. Leopold II became king of Belgium on the day of the death of his dad in

brutal European quest for Congo ivory.
There was a new source of fortune found in the Congo during the 1890s, rubber! An international
rubber race was kicked off by the creation of the inflatable bicycle tire and kept going by the rise of
the automobile using rubber in gaskets and industrial belts, as well as in shielding for telegraph and
telephone wires. People raced to sow rubber trees throughout the tropics! However, the plants could
take years to reach maturity, and during the meantime, there was money in the rubber trees that were
already found in the wild. A great source of wild rubber was found in the Landolphia vines located in
the Central African rainforest. No nation had more of that land than King Leopold. His private army
(19,000 men) known as the Force Publique, would march into village and hold the women as hostage
This would force all the men to go into the rainforest and gather quota of wild rubber per month. As
the price of rubber got higher, the quotas increased. As vines near their village were drained, men
would desperately walk days or weeks into the forest to find new vines to tap in

The Killings And Destruction Of Cultures Throughout The...
History is told in many different ways, and the truth that lies in the stories told, can sometimes be
blurred by different perspectives. Comparing four cases of genocide which formed in the United
States, Australia, British India and German Southwest Africa, allows for a better comprehension of
genocide as defined by the UN Convention. The four cases raise question as to why we can consider
the cases to be genocide, and what similarities and differences each case has. Considering the UN
definition , I acknowledge all but the British Indian case to be genocide. There are multiple similarities
between the mass killings and destruction of cultures in the US, Australia, and German Southwest
Africa, which align with the classification of genocide, but in the case of British India, it doesn t align.
Using The Historiography of Genocide by Dan Stone, Victoria s Ghost by Mike Davis, To Kill A
People by John Cox and Genocide by Adam Jones, I will articulate arguments about the genocides
found in each case.
In the year 1608, pilgrims arrived to Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts where Indians fed them and
showed them hospitality. In return, the colonists brought Indians small poxes, among other diseases,
which would decimate the Indian community. The plague of diseases caused a decrease in Indian
population, from roughly 7 million to 237,000, and allowed for the settlers to expand. Although the
spread of disease was not the settlers intent, it is arguably a factor in the success of

How Does Golding Use Conflict In Lord Of The Flies
In the book in the Lord of the Flies, the boys try to make the best of the situation but it ends in a
disaster. The boys were on a plane during World War Two and a fighter jet shot them down and then
they crashed onto an island. Then they lose their connection with civilization, become crazy and
started killing each other. The writing strategy used throughout the story is conflict and this means
struggles. William Golding uses conflict to show the central idea, don t judge a book by its cover.
The main idea is how boys are very mean to Piggy because of how he looks. When Ralph asked Jack
to keep the fire going Jack did not keep the fire going like he was asked to. Jack went out to go
hunting instead. Then Ralph and Piggy came up to check on them and Ralph was mad. They had a
meeting and Piggy wanted to talk to give his opinion but no one would listen to him because of his
appearance. This relates to conflict because Jack did not do what Raph asked him to do and it started a
fight between Ralph and Jack. This also relates to don t judge a book by it s cover because the boys do
not listen to Piggy for what he looks like, even though he is always right. Overall the boys ... Show

Essay on Biofilms
A biofilm is a layer consisting of various combinations of many different organisms, autotrophic and
heterotrophic. They are dense, organized communities of cells, encased in a self produced slime. The
bacteria grow together in water like atmospheres, attaching to a solid surface, forming a small
ecosystem. Biofilms are known as a micro environment, a micro habitat, or a slime matrix. They help
decompose dead organisms and recycle carbon and nutrients.
Biofilms are formed on almost any surface that is submerged in non sterile water. Even hot springs,
and glaciers. Examples of common places where biofilms are found are pipes, hulls of ships, porcelain
surface of toilet bowls, wood siding, shower tiles, plastics, wooden cutting boards, ... Show more

This contains sugars such as glucose, galactose, mannose, fructose, rhamnose, N acetylglucosamine
and others. The fifth step is that the slime layer of EPS and bacteria entraps particulate materials such
as clay, organic materials, dead cells, and precipitated minerals, adding to the diverse biofilm. The
final and continuous step is when other organisms attach to the biofilms.
The formation of biofilms is not random but can be predicted by the process above. The biofilms
become attached to surfaces because of gravity, or bacteria that have a negative charge. The bacteria
senses and goes to the highest concentration of nutrients.
Biofilms are hard to treat for many reasons. The main reason is because they are highly resistant to
antibiotics. This is because the outer cells protect the inner cells from the antibiotic. Therefore, a long
term treatment of antibiotics is required to help the biofilm related infection. Living in groups, give
bacteria properties they didn t have when living alone. Another reason they re hard to treat is because
they are undefeatable by the body s natural immune defense system. Biofilms avoid chemical
disinfection in two different ways. The first is that a gel like polysaccharide layer provides a physical
barrier against any outside agent, biological or chemical. The second is that even if a biocidal agent is
introduced in a large enough quantity to eliminate the living bacteria, then

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Summary
Summary
For this article there were no research questions, but the authors wanted to focus on the pathogenesis,
diagnosis and treatment of PCOS. They found that polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is common in
women, with a10% prevalence in women of reproductive age. Polycystic ovary syndrome is defined
as ovarian dysfunction with polycystic ovaries. It also includes androgen excess which is shown by
testosterone levels being elevated. Increased levels of testosterone can be seen through excess body
hair. Obesity is seen in many women with PCOS, this can lead to insulin resistance and Type II
Diabetes. Genetics has an impact on polycystic ovary syndrome with 20 40% of people with PCOS
having first degree relatives with the syndrome.
The authors also found that PCOS can cause many long term side effects, including Type II diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, and malignancy. Type II diabetes is due to the high prevalence
of obesity leading to insulin resistance in PCOS. Women with PCOS are at higher risks for
cardiovascular diseases including increased levels of low density lipoproteins. Polycystic ovary
syndrome can also lead to anxiety, depression and binge eating. Women with obesity have a ... Show

The more reliable Herodotus said Cyrus was of partly Median and that a Median king Astyages,
overlord of the Persians, gave his daughter Mandane to his Persian serf Cambyses, rather than one of
his Medes that were held in high prestige. He did this because he had a dream where his daughter said
she hated him and his kingdom. Herodotus said he kept on having dreams like this and when he heard
Cyrus was born ordered one of his officers Harpagus to kill the child. Other accounts say he had
dreams that Cyrus would one day overthrow him and that s why he ordered him killed. Harpagus didn
t have the heart to kill the child and then hid him in the mountains with herdsmen, who agreed to take
care of him. Astyages then had Harpagus son butchered, jointed the body and then served it dressed in
mutton to Harpagus. At the age of 10 Cyrus was found but Astyages was persuaded to let Cyrus live.
In 559 B.C. He Cyrus rose to the thrown of Anshan and began to show signs of independence from his

Fiction, Between Inner Life and Collective Memory. A Methodological Reflection. François Xavier
Lavenne, Virginie Renard, François Tollet1 Introduction In the writing of their fictional works,
novelists often have to reflect on the functioning of memory, for memory lies at the heart both of inner
life and of human experience in general. It is indeed in the works of writers such as Marcel Proust or
Jorge Luis Borges that the best exemplifications of the subjective experience of memory are to be
found. However, from a strictly mnemonic point of view, literature provides more than a means of
reflecting on memory: it is also the site of the rebirth and construction of individual and collective
memories, which can then serve as a foundation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Memories were first attributed directly to a collective entity by Maurice Halbwachs in his epoch
making La Mémoire Collective (The Collective Memory).5 This sociologist claims that all memory
depends, on the one hand, of the group in which one lives and, on the other, to the status one holds in
that group. To remember, one therefore needs to situate oneself within a current of collective thought.6
As a result, Halbwachs concludes that there are no purely individual memories, i.e. memories that
would belong only to the individual, and of which the individual would be the unique source.7 We are
therefore not the authentic subjects of attribution of our memories. Several writers have attempted to
reconcile these conflicting on individual memory and collective memory. For example, Paul Ricoeur
argues that memory does belong to the realm of interiority, for we see ourselves as the true possessors
of our own memories.8 However, memory also involves the other and fully bears its mark.9 From its
declarative phase, memory enters the public sphere because a testimony is always presented to, and
received by, an other. Moreover, Ricoeur, following in the footsteps of Halbwach, asserts that peers
can assist an individual in the work of remembering.10 He therefore draws the conclusion that
memory processes involve both the individual and the group. Ricoeur thus differentiates among three
different poles of attribution of memory: there exists, between

Veiling For Muslim Women
Vast numbers of Muslim women around the world, range by wearing a simple head scarf to full body
burqa. The book aims to explain this very visible, yet controversial and least understood Islam
emblem. Sahar Amer highlights the multiple meanings of veiling, showing that the practice cannot be
homogenized or oversimplified and it extends well beyond the religious and political accounts that are
overwhelming proclaimed both inside and outside Muslim majority societies. Despite popular belief,
Islam did not invent veiling nor is the practice specific to Muslims (Amer, 1). Veiling has been
practiced by Christian, Jewish and Muslim women for the past two millennia, but somehow it is

In Merriam Webster English dictionary, it states nearly the same definition, but goes on to mention the
nun s headdress and the bride s ornamental head cover as examples of veiling (Amer, 10). So why do
we, as Euro Americans typically associate veiling with Islamic practice? In reference to Islam, the veil
takes on a specific connotation in our popular imagery. Typically, we do not associate the sheer bridal
veil with Islam, rather it is fused with images of a black cloak, a chador, covering a Muslim woman
from head to toe in Iran (Amer, 10). Unfortunately, the media plays another role in this as this is how
many movies, television programs, and newspapers have portrayed these women. Growing up in a
country that has only shown images of women in dark, dense coverings, I did not realize that women
did not necessarily dress this way. The book explains the many different types of Muslim dress and
veils, ranging from covering everything except for the eyes to only cover the hair and neck. The
differences in dress made it clear that not all Muslim women dress the same way, despite what media

Concord Hymn Analysis
The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the initial battles of the Revolutionary War. Events
leading up to the first battles of the Revolutionary War such as the Tea Act, The Boston Tea Party, and
the Intolerable Acts all played a significant role in setting the scene for the Revolutionary War. In the
battles of Lexington and Concord Britain discovered that the tenacity of the Americans would not so
easily be silenced. Hundreds of British troops, estimated to be around seven hundred, marched from
Boston to Lexington on the evening of April 18, 1775, with secret orders to capture any weapons
available to the American militia. Thanks to the efforts of Paul Revere and William Dawes, who rode

Ralph Waldo Emerson s poem, Concord Hymn supports that the first shot was fired at the North
bridge in Concord, Massachusetts. The first stanza of the Concord Hymn is, By the rude bridge that
arched the flood, Their flag to April s breeze unfurled, Here once the embattled farmers stood, And
fired the shot heard round the world (Emerson). Although Emerson suggests that it was in Concord
where the shot heard around the world was fired, descendants of the towns Lexington and Concord
still debate this fact today. Tensions had been building for many years between residents of the 13
American colonies and the British authorities, particularly in Massachusetts (History). On Wednesday,
April 19, 1775 at the village green in the village of Lexington in Middlesex County, Province of
Massachusetts Bay, Captain John Parker and around 60 militia men many of the men being related to
Parker faced off against 240 Redcoats under General Gage s command. John Parker was a farmer and
had previously fought alongside the British. The militia men were not near as well trained or well
equipped as the British regulars. There were over one hundred onlookers at the battle of Lexington.
Both John Parker s militia men and Gage s Redcoats were under orders to hold their fire. Nobody is
exactly sure who fired the first shot at Lexington; some people believe that it could have been a
spectator. Regardless of who fired the first shot, shots were exchanged by Captain Parker and General
Gage s men, and the Revolutionary War had begun. After the musket smoke cleared, 8 Americans lay
dead with little to no casualties to the British. The American militia retreated to the town of Concord
where the second battle of the Revolutionary War would soon take

Allusions In Hamlet Research Paper
During the Elizabethan era, its visual art, music, theatre and literature and any other form of art went
through a Renaissance or rebirth (Alchin). Playwrights had more freedom than ever in this era when
writing their plays and even [embraced] ... ancient Greek and Roman beliefs, myths and culture
(About the Elizabethan Era and the Four Humors) in their works. Even Queen Elizabeth I kept up to
date with the Renaissance and learned much about Greek and Roman myths (The Renaissance and the
Elizabethan Age). And so, Greek and Roman beliefs spread like wildlife and soon enough, everyone
generally knew which god was which and which one did what. Unfortunately, today s general target
audience of the play Hamlet can, at most, recognize that these are names of ancient Greek and Roman
gods. Thus, the next paragraphs will explain the multiple allusions that appear in a passage of
Shakespeare s Hamlet. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This suggests that Hamlet s father has curly hair that is as dazzling and brilliant as the god of Light
himself.
The second allusion is of a Roman god: front of Jove himself (III.iv.57). Jove is the English name for
Jupiter, known as the god of all gods, of Light and of Sky (Lindemans). In this allusion, Shakespeare
compares the face or front of King Hamlet to the faultless face of Jupiter, the supreme god of the
Roman pantheon (Lindemans).
The third allusion, An eye like Mars (III.iv.58) refers to the Roman god of War, Mars. Numerous
temples are dedicated to him and a meeting of the Roman army usually occurs at one of his temples
before they go to war (Lindemans). This shows that King Hamlet is as victorious and insightful in
battle as the god of War which he demonstrates when he wins the battle against old Fortinbras and his
Norwegian army

The Progression Of Intellectual Development
The progression of intellectual development gives us a guide for which to judge the relative merits of
historical ideas. This process proves to be critical in our interpretation of the past. If the ideas of today
are the successors to our intellectual heritage, then by its virtues they determine how we construe
history. In this regard we look back upon Aristotle. By modern standards this famous Greek
philosopher is lionized as a transformative scholar. Our adoration for Aristotle then must be derived
from how our own history developed. This is not to make claim as to whether or not his philosophies
or opinions were correct, rather merely to state that his works proved so influential that society has a
positive opinion of him. Looking around today, however, it is hard to see how a philosopher who lived
four thousand years ago could have an immediate impact on us. It is under this pretense through the
process of backwards inference that this paper is going to set out to prove that Aristotle s empirical
methods form the basis for the modern day scientific method and regardless of his views on natural
philosophy, Aristotle remains a major authority in our contemporary intellectual world.
In order to prove this a firm understanding of Aristotle and empiricism is imperative. From there then
can trace the origins of the scientific method to prove the relationship between the two. It is important
to note that the scientific method gives us the foundation for which we perceive and

Eastern Spadefoot Toads
The scientific name for the Eastern Spadefoot toad is Scaphiopus holbrookii. They have vertically
elliptical pupils with grayish or blackish brown skin with olive skin scattered with warts. Two yellow
lines originate from each eye and formed a lyre shaped pattern along each side of the body. The sickle
shaped spade on the side of its foot belongs to the primitive amphibian family that is neither true frog
nor true toad.
The toads are known for being in the east coast region of America. These places are known for their
loose grainy soil the toads can dig in. Eastern Spadefoot toads like to live in semi arid places with
sandy soil for the toads to dig in using its spades. The toads do so to keep themselves from drying out.
I choose the Eastern Spadefoot toad because of its unique spade on the back of each foot of the toad
(hence its name). The Eastern Spadefoot is an endangered species that is a victim of urbanization,
habitat deconstruction, and poaching. There are a few organizations trying to help the Eastern
Spadefoot toad. For example, the Natural Heritage Endangered Species Program, and the Genzyme
Corporation worked together to make the conservation project at the Southwick Wildlife Management
Area (WMA) in August 2015. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

About two hundred years ago, Raffles arrived at a small fishing village in Melaka Strait, took charge
of it and started a new generation. Now, this small fishing village is named Singapore and became one
of the most globalized countries in the world. Raffles, the adventurer in 1819, is still an iconic hero in
Singapore s social memory. This paper will interpret the founding of Singapore in 1819 as a result of
four main factors: Raffles ambition as a clerk of the East India Company, the Anglo Dutch

Without signing with signing with Raffles, Hengku Husian would probably have to continue to eke
out a living on Pulau Penyengat, while without signing with Tengku Husian, Raffles would not get the
opportunity to plan and run the small island and turned it into a significant port, and that turned out to
be a fateful step on Singapore s way of being an international big city.
Last by not least, the finding of Singapore also can be seen as the remaining effect of 14th century
trading emporium in Temasek (Singapore). Connecting the booming civilizations of Asia China, India
and Middle East, Melaka Strait s trades were greatly affected by those countries, and Temasek, as a
gateway of hinterland and a collection of various products, attracted most of businessmen to trade
here. With the growing trades between China, India and Southeast Asia and their friendly relationship
with it, Temasek as a main port established an emporium which can be an evidence of Singapore s
strategic location. In the meantime, China s huge demands on Singapore s main products hornbill
casques, lakawood and cotton also brought Singapore great profits. In a degree, the success of
Singapore as a port can be described as a product of a good relationship and policy with main trading
countries. Similar situation happened in 1819. As main traders in Southeast Asia, British, or EIC, had

The Argument And Critical Inquiry Essay
1. When was the last time you got into an argument? What is an argument? Is it the same as a shouting
match, a brawl? What does an argument have to do with critical thinking? What is the relationship
between arguments and critical inquiry?
The last time that I was involved in an argument, was on the drive to Cypress Hills. The argument was
based on whether the Cypress Hills are Mountains or Hills. An argument is a set of claims, that is
supported by premises. Although an argument may lead to a shouting match or a brawl, they are
speaking of the word argument in a different context. There is more than one definition to the word
argument. In our case we are interested in arguments as a set of claims, not a yelling match between
two people. Arguments are related to critical thinking, since you must evaluate the issue and form a
reasoned judgement.
2. Do you think teachers should teach students how to argue well? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I think knowing how to form and structure sound, valid arguments is important. Students should
also learn common flaws and fallacies to arguments. Teaching students how to argue well, allows
them to create arguments based on evidence. Knowing these skills allows students to evaluate issues
and form reasoned judgements, which is beneficial in every day life. These skills can be taught many
ways in school, for example through the implementation of debates or the art of essay writing and can
be used cross circular in many

Van Gogh And Gauguin
The discussion that took place during week three focused broadly on comparing the differences in
vision, personality and ideas of the primitive between Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. These
differences were investigated through their working relationship, as shown by their letters of
correspondence, and the art each artist produced during this time. The group discussed comparisons
between Van Gogh s plan and almost obsession with making the Studio of the South work and
Gauguin s wanderlust that kept him moving. The ideal studio of both Gauguin and Van Gogh opened
up discussion further to what aspects of the primitive each painter was influenced by in their
attempted creation of a utopian working space. The readings from Childs and the ... Show more

A Discussion again focused on comparing the two saying how the preference of Brittany versus Arles
says much about how their creative process differed. Gauguin s rarely depicts his subject matter with
descriptive accuracy instead he takes a place and abstracts the savage and primitive quality that he is
searching for. Brittany offers Gauguin not only a rocky savagery in its landscape but allows him to
abstract a medieval primitivism from the people in the area due to their Catholic devotion and less
modern lifestyle. In his letter to Gauguin in September 1888, Gauguin describes the figures in Vision
After the Sermon, as him achieving a great rustic and superstitious simplicity saying that the people
are less civilized due to their Catholic devotion, and thus more spiritual. Arles offered Van Gogh a
calm sunny place in nature that can act as a monastery for him. A quote by Childs was brought up that,
Arles was caught somewhere between a French agrarian village and a modern city This caused issue
for Gauguin who didn t want any of that modernity, as shown by him often leaving out signs of
civilization in his tropical landscapes. While Van Gogh does feature aspects of modernity in his

Global Cliimate Change War
Admiral Samuel J. Locklear III claims that global climate change is the most imposing threat in the
Pacific Ocean rather than military threats found from other countries. This piece of information from
Admiral Locklear deserves the attention of the American people, because the Admiral is putting global
climate change and its effects ahead of the safety of the American people from other military
powers/threats. Admiral Locklear s claim is flawed for these reasons: he is neglecting current affairs
with nuclear threats from North Korea, conflict between China/Japan, and he is putting the safety of
the American people second to helping other countries from the threat of global climate change.
According to Admiral Locklear, global climate change in the Pacific Ocean is a much more daunting
threat to the U.S. military based in the Pacific, rather than other military threats. Locklear states that
climate change will, cripple the security environment, probably more likely than the other scenarios
we all often talk about. The Admiral also mentions how the Pacific Ocean and the long term threats to
the peace of East Asia, is found at the center of the Obama administration s defense strategy, and that
protecting these regions from climate change threats should be the top priority. Locklear s forces again
and again have to respond to the disastrous weather occurrences that are growing more constant as the
Earth s climate continues to change.

The Bernie Madoff Investment Scandal
The Bernie Madoff Investment scheme is an accounting scandal well known around the world as the

of a ponzi scheme , which are run by a central operator, using new money coming in to pay off older

Comparison Of The Rue Morgue And The Black Cat
It may seem that Edgar Allan Poe s stories have no correlation to one another, such as The Black Cat
and The Murders in the Rue Morgue, after all one is the telling of a madman s confession and the
other a detective story. Although at first glance there seems to be no particular similarities, I hope to
convey otherwise. In The Black Cat there is a lot of talk about animals, demonstrating the narrator s
great love for them, never expecting that death would be brought from this great love. Overtime the
narrator experienced some changes. He became an alcoholic altering his behavior, even his behavior
towards his favorite pet and playmate Pluto. His actions lead to Pluto the cat being killed, and after
this cats death the narrator encounters a cat very similar to his dead one. His wife grew much found of
it and he realized he greatly disliked this cat. He was so enraged that one day he nearly killed the
beast. Considering his previous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

have climbed the pole next to the window. He finally comes to the conclusion that an orangutan
committed the murder because of its immense strength, ability to climb, and the audible but not
understandable sound the neighbors hear. The question remains how an orangutan even got to this
place, and that is when Dupin comes to the conclusion that a sailor brought it with him and somehow
it had escaped. Although at the beginning there seemed to be no explanation, it is clear that there is an
explanation for the events that happened just as there is an explanation as to why the narrator from

  • 2. Hellenistic Skepticism Analysis This essay will be exploring the Hellenistic Philosophical movement of Skepticism in its beginnings in academia as well as the teachings and positions of Pyrrhonist skeptics. Hellenistic skepticism at its core is striving to Suspended judgment , as well as question the basis of truth. In accordance to this proverbial philosophical quest for truth, the Hellenistic skeptic would take a different path compared to their contemporary schools of the thought, by negating perceptual belief, and not affirming anything. To these ancient skeptics this will lead the philosopher down the path to Suspended Judgement in which, they seek. This Suspended Judgement will bring tranquility to the mind or at least these ancient Pyrrhonist skeptics believed this to be so, thus this being the key reason why this is the central goal ... Arcesilaus core tenants of thought are as followed (i) his dialectical method, (ii) discussion of whether there is a criterion of truth, and (iii) his defense of the skeptic s ability to act. (SEP) Arcesilaus often uses the same dialectical method that was originated with Socrates, however Arcesilaus took the skeptical approach to this method with the goal to weed out Dogmatic justifications and conclusions on reality. His criterion of truth, which often was in objection to the stoic tradition, as well as most other Hellenistic schools of thought, besides of course the cynics. However, the skeptic s approach to truth is that of trying to gain the most objective answer, often by refuting arguments made earlier in order to see all sides of the question, thus having no true answer but instead a multitude of ideas that the Hellenistic skeptic would is both true but also false. Arcesilaus would also argue that there could not be a criterion of truth. Often arguing against the stoic claim of Cognitive impressions for the skeptics. His main disagreement is if there is impressions of this type. Due to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Losing My Best Friend To A Monster Losing my Best Friend to a Monster Gracie and I had been best friends since the first grade. We were in third grade when she started missing a lot of school. I had been wondering for a couple weeks why she hadn t been in school. I had no idea what could have been wrong with her. Even on the days she would come to school she would end up going home sick because she wasn t feeling well. It was almost the end of our third grade year and I couldn t stop wondering what was going on with her. There were three days until school was over when my other best friend Rachael called me. She was crying. I asked her what was wrong. She struggles to speak stuttering she said, My mom and I were just at the ice cream shop and Gracie was there with her mom. I was wondering why she was crying trying to figure out what was going on. I asked What s wrong? What is it? Is there something wrong with Gracie? That s when I heard the bitter words. Gracie has kidney cancer. I dropped the phone and began to cry. I was scared to death. Over that summer I rarely got to hang out with her. She always had doctors appointments or she had nurses coming to her house and she wasn t allowed to have friends over. When school started up I barely got to talk to her she was going through Chemotherapy treatments and wasn t allowed to be near people. She didn t come back to school until fifth grade and by then our friendship had almost completely faded away. After a few months of school Gracie and I began to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. What Role Does Morality Play In A Utopian Society The concept of utopia is one which has many differing connotations and is therefore also one which cannot be confined to one interpretation alone. The term is commonly used to represent a community or society that, in theory, possesses highly desirable or near perfect qualities; however, these encompassing ideals, which arguably place emphasis on egalitarian principles of equality, are implemented in a number of ways and are subsequently based on varying ideologies, thus insisting on varying views of morality. The word itself, which was first coined by Sir Thomas More in the early sixteenth century and used to describe a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean, was taken from the Greek οὐ ( not ) and τόπος ( place ), literally translating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The task at hand is to establish the perception of a utopic past, and therefore it is with regard to these two contrasting notions of utopia that I will be considering the ways in which both William Blake s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Algernon Charles Swinburne s Hermaphroditus seek to expose and challenge the mechanisms of traditional views regarding spiritualism and the physical form, as well as critiquing the mode of normative sexuality and representations of the body. Another important concept to consider alongside this is that of dystopia, which is characterized by dehumanization, totalitarian governments, and all matters associated with a cataclysmic decline in society. Dystopic societies are usually set in the future and provide an antonymic, frightening opposition to the general concept of utopia. Rather than portraying an idyllic state of civilisation which promises an exit from the cycle of life and death, the term dystopia is used to draw attention to real world issues which if unaddressed could potentially lead to such a dystopia like ... • 6. Strength And Weaknesses Of Unitary Government In The... The United States of America declared freedom from Great Britain in 1776. There were thirteen colonies that decided to arrange a necessary government. After battling the difficulties of living under a monarchy, the Founding Fathers have set up a Federation with ideas of foreign governments: unitary and confederal. The American Federalism government, Unitary, and Confederal government have strength and weaknesses in running countries. Countries such as Switzerland and Cuba use a Unitarian government system (Unitary State Countries, 2015 2018). A Unitary government is very small centralized and controls the legal and moral legislation for both the state and the country (Apecsecadmin 2015). The most damaging result of this system is the lack of clear communication between the government and citizens. This type of government cannot identify or respond quickly to a direct issue within a local city or state. The advantages, however on the other hand do allow for prompt judgments for the entire country, this includes passing laws and design a budget. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Confederal system was made up the first thirteen colonies that saw themselves as their own countries. The states had the ability to create treaties with each other. The Articles of Confederal were able to win the war against Britain and declare national freedom. The advantage and disadvantage of a confederal system is to avert a strong central government. The lack of a strong government causes a loose relationship between the states, thus the inability to enforce tax collections or laws. A weak government on the other hand, cannot abuse the powers causing a tyranny ruling of the individual states (Kelly 2017). The vision of the confederal system was to keep the power at home and allow states to share directly with the citizens. This form of government is considered the transformation period (Greengarbage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Leopold became the oldest son of Belgium I that was alive. Leopold I was the very first king of Belgium, with his second wife, Louise Marie of Orléans being queen. Leopold II became the Duke of Brabant in 1846 as well as serving in the Belgian army. In 1853, Leopold II a beautiful woman married Marie Henriette. She was the daughter of the Austrian archduke Joseph, who was the palatine of Hungary. Leopold II became king of Belgium on the day of the death of his dad in December 1865. Ivory was a principal source of the great wealth that Leopold and his associates drew from the new colony for a long time. Joseph Conrad was a man who spend six months in the Congo during 1990 as an officer as a steamboat, and in his novel called Heart of Darkness, he gives shows a picture of the brutal European quest for Congo ivory. There was a new source of fortune found in the Congo during the 1890s, rubber! An international rubber race was kicked off by the creation of the inflatable bicycle tire and kept going by the rise of the automobile using rubber in gaskets and industrial belts, as well as in shielding for telegraph and telephone wires. People raced to sow rubber trees throughout the tropics! However, the plants could take years to reach maturity, and during the meantime, there was money in the rubber trees that were already found in the wild. A great source of wild rubber was found in the Landolphia vines located in the Central African rainforest. No nation had more of that land than King Leopold. His private army (19,000 men) known as the Force Publique, would march into village and hold the women as hostage This would force all the men to go into the rainforest and gather quota of wild rubber per month. As the price of rubber got higher, the quotas increased. As vines near their village were drained, men would desperately walk days or weeks into the forest to find new vines to tap in ... • 8. The Killings And Destruction Of Cultures Throughout The... History is told in many different ways, and the truth that lies in the stories told, can sometimes be blurred by different perspectives. Comparing four cases of genocide which formed in the United States, Australia, British India and German Southwest Africa, allows for a better comprehension of genocide as defined by the UN Convention. The four cases raise question as to why we can consider the cases to be genocide, and what similarities and differences each case has. Considering the UN definition , I acknowledge all but the British Indian case to be genocide. There are multiple similarities between the mass killings and destruction of cultures in the US, Australia, and German Southwest Africa, which align with the classification of genocide, but in the case of British India, it doesn t align. Using The Historiography of Genocide by Dan Stone, Victoria s Ghost by Mike Davis, To Kill A People by John Cox and Genocide by Adam Jones, I will articulate arguments about the genocides found in each case. In the year 1608, pilgrims arrived to Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts where Indians fed them and showed them hospitality. In return, the colonists brought Indians small poxes, among other diseases, which would decimate the Indian community. The plague of diseases caused a decrease in Indian population, from roughly 7 million to 237,000, and allowed for the settlers to expand. Although the spread of disease was not the settlers intent, it is arguably a factor in the success of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. How Does Golding Use Conflict In Lord Of The Flies In the book in the Lord of the Flies, the boys try to make the best of the situation but it ends in a disaster. The boys were on a plane during World War Two and a fighter jet shot them down and then they crashed onto an island. Then they lose their connection with civilization, become crazy and started killing each other. The writing strategy used throughout the story is conflict and this means struggles. William Golding uses conflict to show the central idea, don t judge a book by its cover. The main idea is how boys are very mean to Piggy because of how he looks. When Ralph asked Jack to keep the fire going Jack did not keep the fire going like he was asked to. Jack went out to go hunting instead. Then Ralph and Piggy came up to check on them and Ralph was mad. They had a meeting and Piggy wanted to talk to give his opinion but no one would listen to him because of his appearance. This relates to conflict because Jack did not do what Raph asked him to do and it started a fight between Ralph and Jack. They are dense, organized communities of cells, encased in a self produced slime. The bacteria grow together in water like atmospheres, attaching to a solid surface, forming a small ecosystem. Biofilms are known as a micro environment, a micro habitat, or a slime matrix. They help decompose dead organisms and recycle carbon and nutrients. Biofilms are formed on almost any surface that is submerged in non sterile water. Even hot springs, and glaciers. The fifth step is that the slime layer of EPS and bacteria entraps particulate materials such as clay, organic materials, dead cells, and precipitated minerals, adding to the diverse biofilm. The final and continuous step is when other organisms attach to the biofilms. The formation of biofilms is not random but can be predicted by the process above. The biofilms become attached to surfaces because of gravity, or bacteria that have a negative charge. The bacteria senses and goes to the highest concentration of nutrients. Biofilms are hard to treat for many reasons. The main reason is because they are highly resistant to antibiotics. This is because the outer cells protect the inner cells from the antibiotic. Therefore, a long term treatment of antibiotics is required to help the biofilm related infection. Living in groups, give bacteria properties they didn t have when living alone. Another reason they re hard to treat is because they are undefeatable by the body s natural immune defense system. Biofilms avoid chemical disinfection in two different ways. The first is that a gel like polysaccharide layer provides a physical barrier against any outside agent, biological or chemical. The second is that even if a biocidal agent is introduced in a large enough quantity to eliminate the living bacteria, then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Awareness Fiction, Between Inner Life and Collective Memory. A Methodological Reflection. François Xavier Lavenne, Virginie Renard, François Tollet1 Introduction In the writing of their fictional works, novelists often have to reflect on the functioning of memory, for memory lies at the heart both of inner life and of human experience in general. It is indeed in the works of writers such as Marcel Proust or Jorge Luis Borges that the best exemplifications of the subjective experience of memory are to be found. However, from a strictly mnemonic point of view, literature provides more than a means of reflecting on memory: it is also the site of the rebirth and construction of individual and collective memories, which can then serve as a foundation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Memories were first attributed directly to a collective entity by Maurice Halbwachs in his epoch making La Mémoire Collective (The Collective Memory).5 This sociologist claims that all memory depends, on the one hand, of the group in which one lives and, on the other, to the status one holds in that group. To remember, one therefore needs to situate oneself within a current of collective thought.6 As a result, Halbwachs concludes that there are no purely individual memories, i.e. memories that would belong only to the individual, and of which the individual would be the unique source.7 We are therefore not the authentic subjects of attribution of our memories. Several writers have attempted to reconcile these conflicting on individual memory and collective memory. For example, Paul Ricoeur argues that memory does belong to the realm of interiority, for we see ourselves as the true possessors of our own memories.8 However, memory also involves the other and fully bears its mark.9 From its declarative phase, memory enters the public sphere because a testimony is always presented to, and received by, an other. Moreover, Ricoeur, following in the footsteps of Halbwach, asserts that peers can assist an individual in the work of remembering.10 He therefore draws the conclusion that memory processes involve both the individual and the group. Ricoeur thus differentiates among three different poles of attribution of memory: there exists, between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Merriam Webster English dictionary, it states nearly the same definition, but goes on to mention the nun s headdress and the bride s ornamental head cover as examples of veiling (Amer, 10). So why do we, as Euro Americans typically associate veiling with Islamic practice? In reference to Islam, the veil takes on a specific connotation in our popular imagery. Typically, we do not associate the sheer bridal veil with Islam, rather it is fused with images of a black cloak, a chador, covering a Muslim woman from head to toe in Iran (Amer, 10). Unfortunately, the media plays another role in this as this is how many movies, television programs, and newspapers have portrayed these women. Growing up in a country that has only shown images of women in dark, dense coverings, I did not realize that women did not necessarily dress this way. In the battles of Lexington and Concord Britain discovered that the tenacity of the Americans would not so easily be silenced. Although Emerson suggests that it was in Concord where the shot heard around the world was fired, descendants of the towns Lexington and Concord still debate this fact today. Tensions had been building for many years between residents of the 13 American colonies and the British authorities, particularly in Massachusetts (History). On Wednesday, April 19, 1775 at the village green in the village of Lexington in Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, Captain John Parker and around 60 militia men many of the men being related to Parker faced off against 240 Redcoats under General Gage s command. This process proves to be critical in our interpretation of the past. If the ideas of today are the successors to our intellectual heritage, then by its virtues they determine how we construe history. In this regard we look back upon Aristotle. By modern standards this famous Greek philosopher is lionized as a transformative scholar. Our adoration for Aristotle then must be derived from how our own history developed. This is not to make claim as to whether or not his philosophies or opinions were correct, rather merely to state that his works proved so influential that society has a positive opinion of him. Looking around today, however, it is hard to see how a philosopher who lived four thousand years ago could have an immediate impact on us. It is under this pretense through the process of backwards inference that this paper is going to set out to prove that Aristotle s empirical methods form the basis for the modern day scientific method and regardless of his views on natural philosophy, Aristotle remains a major authority in our contemporary intellectual world. In order to prove this a firm understanding of Aristotle and empiricism is imperative. From there then can trace the origins of the scientific method to prove the relationship between the two. What does an argument have to do with critical thinking? What is the relationship between arguments and critical inquiry? The last time that I was involved in an argument, was on the drive to Cypress Hills. The argument was based on whether the Cypress Hills are Mountains or Hills. An argument is a set of claims, that is supported by premises. Although an argument may lead to a shouting match or a brawl, they are speaking of the word argument in a different context. There is more than one definition to the word argument. In our case we are interested in arguments as a set of claims, not a yelling match between two people. Arguments are related to critical thinking, since you must evaluate the issue and form a reasoned judgement. 2. Do you think teachers should teach students how to argue well? If so, why?
