This ppt contains a brief description on the application of various enzymes in the field of medicine.
This ppt is made by ABHISHEK JAIN student of dwaraka doss goverdhan doss vaishnav college situated in arumbakkam at chennai - 600106.
This document is so useful for the students under going enzymatic studies or carrying out research on any type of enzyme specially in the field of biochemistry.
2. What is the use of enzymes in medicine?
Enzymes are the preferred markers in various disease states such as
myocardial infarction, jaundice, pancreatitis, cancer, neurodegenerative
disorders, etc. They provide insight into the disease process by diagnosis,
prognosis and assessment of response therapy.
Enzymes can also be used for analytical tests & drug manufacturing.
They also work as therapeutic enzymes (like replacement).
3. USES OF ENZYMES :-
• : Diabetics use strips of paper impregnated with glucose oxidase to monitor
their blood sugar.
• The presence of enzymes where they should not be present can also help to diagnose disease. For
example when the liver is diseased or damaged, enzymes leak into the bloodstream. Testing the
blood for these enzymes can confirm liver damage.
: Enzymes are sometimes used as medicines to replace enzyme
deficiencies in patients like is the use of blood clotting factors to treat haemoplilia, or the
opposite where proteases are used to degrade fibrin; to prevent the formation of dangerous blood
clots. Nuclease is a possible therapy for cystic fibrosis, but it is not clear how commercialized and
therapeutically successful this has been.
• Proteases are used to clean wounds and therefore accelerate the healing process.
• : The chemical synthesis of complex drugs is often difficult and
companies turn to enzymes to perform chemical conversions
• In a semi-therapeutic way; Enzymes are used to aid digestion, to supplement the natural amylase,
lipase and protease produced by the pancreas. People with lactose intolerance lose the enzyme
lactase. Lactase supplements help to avoid stomach upsets for these people.
4. USES OF ENZYMES WITH EXAMPLES :-
Enzymes can be used for Aiding Digestion. Example: Amylases, Proteases and
Lipase.
They can also be used as Deworming agents. Example: Papain.
Enzymes act as anti-clotting agents like Fibrinolytic and Thrombolytic.
Examples: Urokinase and Streptokinase.
Enzymes can be used as surface disinfectants. Example: Trypsin.
They can also be used in the diagnosis purpose. Example: Glucose oxidase along
with peroxidase to detect the level of glucose (colorimetric estimation).
Liver disease: SGPT, SGOT
Heart attacks (MI): SGOT
Myocardial Infarction: Creatine phosphokinase.
