Putting "Value" in Evaluation: Building Relevant, Dynamic Statistical AnalysisJoshua Johnson
Recent history has taught us that we must begin assessing what it is we really do, alter our record-keeping to include an ever-widening group of new services and features, provide evidence that we are actually accomplishing our goals, and find open-ended assessment tools that anticipate future change in library operations. This type of rigorous self-examination makes it more difficult and perhaps unwise to use a one-size-fits-all statistical analysis. Accordingly, this presentation focuses on the process necessary for meaningful and dynamic statistical analysis, including: parsing your mission statement to discover categories of evaluation, brainstorming key indicators that relate directly to these categories, leveraging your organization's current statistical analyses, and evaluating your methods to ensure future adaptability.
Given the complexity of creating RFPs, organisations are not
always fully equipped to ask the correct questions, and might even
lack the required technical knowledge. This talk will demonstrate
the importance of considering input from others when setting
up your own RFP as this can save time and money – the risks
of not identifying all potential pitfalls at RFP stage can be time-
consuming and costly a few years later. This talk will apply to
all in the industry, from publishers seeking out new platform
providers to libraries sourcing vendors for specific projects.

IDHS is a new NICHD-funded data integration project that lowers the barriers to cross-temporal and cross-country research using the Demographic and Health Surveys, focusing initially on Africa and India. IDHS recodes data consistently across samples without losing detail, displays variable availability at a glance, offers variable-specific documentation (including question universes and wording and discussion of comparability issues), and merges files on the fly to create customized data extracts. This presentation will summarize MPC’s approach to integrating microdata, with examples from IDHS, describe the value-added features of IDHS, and summarize future plans for IDHS. At the time of the presentation, IDHS will include data on women of childbearing age, their households, and children under 5, from 18 countries and 77 samples.
Distributed firewalls have been developed to maintain the networks with a higher level of protection than conventional firewalling mechanisms like gateway and host-based fire-walls. even though distributed firewalls provide higher secu-rity, they too have boundaries. Toovercome those limitations we presenting the design & implementation of a new distrib-uted firewall model, based on stateful Cluster Security Gateway (CSG) architecture[1]. This distributed security model are implemented in bottom-up approach means each cluster of end-user hosts are secured first using the CSG architecture. These different CSGs are then centrally man-aged by the Network Administrator. A file-based firewall update mechanism is used for dynamic real- time security. IPsec protocol is used to secure the firewall policy update distribution while X.509 certificates cater for sender/receiver authentication. The major advantage of this approach is to distributed security include tamper resistance, anti-spoofing, anti-sniffing, secure up to date firewall updating, low overall network load, high scalability and low firewall junction times.

The processor-memory bandwidth in modern generation
processors is the important bottleneck due to a number of
processor cores dealing it through with the same bus/ processor-
memory interface. Caches take a significant amount
of energy in current microprocessors. To design an energyefficient
microprocessor, it is important to optimize cache
energy economic consumption. Powerful utilization of this
resource is consequently an important view of memory hierarchy
design of multi core processors. This is presently an
important field of research on a large number of research
issues that have suggested a number of techniques to figure
out the problem. The better contribution of this theme is the
assessment of effectiveness of some of the proficiencies that
were enforced in recent chip multiprocessors. Cache optimization
techniques that were named for single core processors
but have not been implemented in multi core processors
are as well tested to forecast their effectiveness.

Total Quality Management (TQM) was originated in 1950s and the historical evolution of TQM as can categorized in four stages. i.e. Quality Inspection, Quality Control, Quality Assurance and Total Quality Management. Total Quality means the attitude, organization and culture of the company which strives to satisfy the customer needs with their products and services. It is method by which management and its employees get involved in the continuous improvement of the production of goods or services. For this reason, quality and managements tools are combined together and aimed at growing business and reducing the losses caused due to wasteful or inefficient practices.

Adding value : the foundation on which to build communityAPLICwebmaster
Joe Matthews presents a session based on his book about adding value. The premise of the book is really quite simple. First, the concept of adding value is bandied about in the management, marketing, and strategic planning literature but is rarely broken down and discussed so that anyone can really understand the concept and, more importantly, learn how they can add value in the work that they do. Second, change is all around us and affects us as individuals mightily and in our libraries, museum, galleries, and archives in some pretty significant ways. In addition, many observers believe that the rate of change is accelerating which is also a cause for concern. So perhaps it would be prudent to explore what forces in our society, and in the field of information technology specifically, are impacting our lives and our treasured institutions of libraries, museums, galleries and archives and discover how organizations need to change in order to add value for their customers.
Terra Populus: Integrated Data on Population and EnvironmentAPLICwebmaster
Terra Populus is an NSF-funded DataNet project that seeks to lower the barriers for conducting human-environment interactions research. TerraPop provides access to hundreds of census and survey microdata samples, area-level data describing geographic units, and environmental data, commonly stored as raster data, describing land use, land cover, and climate. The data access system adds value to these data by supporting transformations across microdata, area-level data, and raster data. Users may select variables of interest from any of the three formats and obtain output in their desired format. This presentation will provide an overview of the data available in the TerraPop data access system and the system’s transformation functionality, as well as a demonstration of the data access system.

Nucleophilic Addition of carbonyl compounds.pptxSSR02
Nucleophilic addition is the most important reaction of carbonyls. Not just aldehydes and ketones, but also carboxylic acid derivatives in general.
Carbonyls undergo addition reactions with a large range of nucleophiles.
Comparing the relative basicity of the nucleophile and the product is extremely helpful in determining how reversible the addition reaction is. Reactions with Grignards and hydrides are irreversible. Reactions with weak bases like halides and carboxylates generally don’t happen.
Electronic effects (inductive effects, electron donation) have a large impact on reactivity.
Large groups adjacent to the carbonyl will slow the rate of reaction.
Neutral nucleophiles can also add to carbonyls, although their additions are generally slower and more reversible. Acid catalysis is sometimes employed to increase the rate of addition.
Phenomics assisted breeding in crop improvementIshaGoswami9
As the population is increasing and will reach about 9 billion upto 2050. Also due to climate change, it is difficult to meet the food requirement of such a large population. Facing the challenges presented by resource shortages, climate
change, and increasing global population, crop yield and quality need to be improved in a sustainable way over the coming decades. Genetic improvement by breeding is the best way to increase crop productivity. With the rapid progression of functional
genomics, an increasing number of crop genomes have been sequenced and dozens of genes influencing key agronomic traits have been identified. However, current genome sequence information has not been adequately exploited for understanding
the complex characteristics of multiple gene, owing to a lack of crop phenotypic data. Efficient, automatic, and accurate technologies and platforms that can capture phenotypic data that can
be linked to genomics information for crop improvement at all growth stages have become as important as genotyping. Thus,
high-throughput phenotyping has become the major bottleneck restricting crop breeding. Plant phenomics has been defined as the high-throughput, accurate acquisition and analysis of multi-dimensional phenotypes
during crop growing stages at the organism level, including the cell, tissue, organ, individual plant, plot, and field levels. With the rapid development of novel sensors, imaging technology,
and analysis methods, numerous infrastructure platforms have been developed for phenotyping.

Richard's aventures in two entangled wonderlandsRichard Gill
Since the loophole-free Bell experiments of 2020 and the Nobel prizes in physics of 2022, critics of Bell's work have retreated to the fortress of super-determinism. Now, super-determinism is a derogatory word - it just means "determinism". Palmer, Hance and Hossenfelder argue that quantum mechanics and determinism are not incompatible, using a sophisticated mathematical construction based on a subtle thinning of allowed states and measurements in quantum mechanics, such that what is left appears to make Bell's argument fail, without altering the empirical predictions of quantum mechanics. I think however that it is a smoke screen, and the slogan "lost in math" comes to my mind. I will discuss some other recent disproofs of Bell's theorem using the language of causality based on causal graphs. Causal thinking is also central to law and justice. I will mention surprising connections to my work on serial killer nurse cases, in particular the Dutch case of Lucia de Berk and the current UK case of Lucy Letby.

DERIVATION OF MODIFIED BERNOULLI EQUATION WITH VISCOUS EFFECTS AND TERMINAL V...Wasswaderrick3
In this book, we use conservation of energy techniques on a fluid element to derive the Modified Bernoulli equation of flow with viscous or friction effects. We derive the general equation of flow/ velocity and then from this we derive the Pouiselle flow equation, the transition flow equation and the turbulent flow equation. In the situations where there are no viscous effects , the equation reduces to the Bernoulli equation. From experimental results, we are able to include other terms in the Bernoulli equation. We also look at cases where pressure gradients exist. We use the Modified Bernoulli equation to derive equations of flow rate for pipes of different cross sectional areas connected together. We also extend our techniques of energy conservation to a sphere falling in a viscous medium under the effect of gravity. We demonstrate Stokes equation of terminal velocity and turbulent flow equation. We look at a way of calculating the time taken for a body to fall in a viscous medium. We also look at the general equation of terminal velocity.

Editor's Notes
Jim will talk about this
This is an illustrative slide from data in the SLA Alignment study. Data from 2009
Two types of measures: internal and external. These are internal. Benchmarking which we’ll talk about in a few minutes is external.
As needed may mean when contract is up or when you need to prioritize certain service or resource investments, could be by individual piece of work or otherwise.
Who is the target audience for each of your services and for your services as a whole? Is the audience satisfied with how the service is being delivered (technically and in quality), are they getting what they need when they need it? Is the service easy to use; do they have enough training to use it to their satisfaction, and are they getting the results they expect and need? Is it being used as you expected it would be? And how has usage trended over time?
Are your researchers confident in all aspects of their work or do they require some CE to polish things up; are they ready to take leadership roles at a variety of levels; do they take initiative when they see something that can be done or done better? Are you retaining your employees over time, if so why (ask them) and if no, why not (exit interviews). Generally is your team satisfied with pay (with reason in the organization), with how they are asked to work and with their opportunities to grow within the organization
Varies with type of organization
Ask your Finance person what the revenue strategy of your organization/your department needs to be to align with the organization’s goals. Is there an ROI you need to work towards and how will you measure it. If you have a negative ROI, why (goes back to customer satisfaction measures)
Are there ways you can recover costs either dictated by the organization or that you can implement.
External Benchmarking - Illustrative example. Jim will talk about this
Internal measures vs. External measures - when is each necessary or beneficial? Give mgmt consulting example or example of this type of conference. Does not even need to be this detailed, depends on your organization but it is always helpful to be able to demonstrate what you are contributing vis a vis competitors or other similar organizations
Jim will talk about this. Examples of “other responses”. How do you interpret non-response? This is the nightmare survey result you want to avoid. If those who control your budget fall into the non-response category that is respondents who can’t articulate the value you add to the organization, you can see how that might lead to significant trouble. This is a target group you need to figure out how to educate about your contribution to the success of the organization
So what can you do when you get back to work? Perhaps the most difficult of these recommendations is to Take Risks, in what Jim described at the outset of today’s session is a very risk averse business environment. So of course you need to gauge what is doable in your own organization. All we can ask is that you try not to be afraid and perhaps while thinking big strategically, take small steps to achieve the goal.
