Introduction
Research is complete only when the results are shared
with the scientific community . Although such sharing is
accomplished in various ways, both formal and informal,
the traditional medium for communicating research
results is the scientific journals.
Types of Articles
1. Empirical studies
2. Literature reviews
3. Theoretical articles
4. Methodological articles
5. Case studies
6. Other types of articles
Empirical studies
Empirical studies are report original research. These include
secondary analysis that test hypothesis by presenting novel
analysis of data not considered are addressed in previous
reports.
1. Introduction: development of the problem under
investigation, including its historical antecedent, and
statement of the investigation.
2. Method: description of the procedures used to conduct the
investigation
3. Discussion: summary, interpretation, and implications of the
results.
Literature reviews
Literature reviews, include research syntheses and meta-
analysis, are critical evaluation that has already been
published.
1. Define and clear the problem
2. Summarize previous investigations to inform the reader
of the state of research
3. Identify relations, contradictions, gaps and in
consistencies in the literature; and
4. Suggest the next step or steps in solving the problem.
Theoretical Articles
In theoretical authors draw on existing research literature to
advance theory. Author of theoretical articles trace the
development of theory to expand and refine theoretical
constructs or present a new theory are analyze existing
theory, pointing out flows or demonstrating the advantage
of one theory over another.
Methodological Articles
Methodological articles present new methodological
approaches, modifications of existing methods, or
discussions of quantitative and data analytic approaches to
the community of researchers. Methodological articles are
present level that makes them accessible to the well-read
researcher and provide sufficient detail for researchers to
assess the applicability of the methodology to their
research problem.
Case Studies
Case studies illustrate a problem; indicate a means for
solving a problem, and/or shed light on needed research,
clinical applications or theoretical matters.
Other types of articles
Other, less frequently published types of articles include
brief reports, comments and replies on previously
published articles, book reviews, obituaries, letters to the
editor and monographs.
Ethical and legal standards in publishing
Much of the publication manual addresses scientific writing
style, style involves on inherent right or wrong.
1. To ensure the accuracy of scientific knowledge.
2. To protect the rights and welfare of research
participants, and
3. To protect intellectual property rights.
Ensuring the Accuracy of scientific knowledge
Ethical Reporting of research results
The essence of the scientific method involves observations
that can be repeated and verified by others. Thus,
psychologists do not fabricant or falsify data ( APA Ethics
code Standard 8.10a, Reporting Research results). Modify
results, including visual Images, to support a hypothesis or
omitting troublesome observation from reports to present
a more convincing story is also prohibited.
Data Retention and Sharing
Researchers must make their data available to the editor at
any time during the review and publication process if
questions arise with respect to the accuracy of report.
Refusal to do so can lead to rejection of the submitted
manuscript without further consideration. In a similar
vein, once an article is published, researchers must make
their data available to permit other qualified professionals
to confirm the anode Standard 8.14a, sharing Research
data for verification). Authors are expected to retain raw
data for a minimum of five years after publication of the
research.
Duplicate and piecemeal publication of data
 Duplicate:
Publication is the publication of the same data
or idea in two separate sources.
 Piecemeal:
Publication is the unnecessary splitting of the
finding from one research effort into multiple articles.
Plagiarism and self- plagiarism
 Plagiarism:
Researchers do not claim the words and ideas of another as
their own; they give credit is due (APA Ethics Code
Standard 8.11, Plagiarism).
 Self-plagiarism:
Just as researchers do not present the work of others as their
own (plagiarism), they do not present their own previously
published work as new scholarship (self-plagiarism).
Protecting the rights and welfare of research participants
Rights and confidentiality of research participants
Certification of Standards: standards 8.01-8.09 of APA
Ethics code specify the principles psychologists are to
follow in conducting research with humane and animals.
Authors, regardless of field are required to certify that
they have followed these standards as a precondition of
publishing their articles in APA Journals.
Protecting confidentiality
When researchers use case studies to describe their research,
they are prohibited for disclosing “confidential, personally
identifiable information concerning their patients,
individual or organizational clients, students, research
participants, or recipients of services.”
Conflict of interest
In all scientific disciplines, professional communications are
presumed to be biased on objective interpretations of
evidence and unbiased interpretation of fact. An author’s
economic and commercial interests in products or services
used or discussed in a paper may color such objectivity.
Protecting intellectual property rights
 Publication credit:
Authorship is reserved for persons who make a substantial
contribution to and who accept responsibility for
publication work.
 Definition of authorship:
Individuals should only take authorship credit for work they
have actually performed or to which they have
substantially contributed. (APA Ethics Standard 8.12a,
publication credit)
Determining authorship
As early as practicable in a research project, the
collaborators should decide on which tasks are necessary
for the project’s completion, who the work will be
divided, which tasks or combination of tasks merits
authorship credit, and on what level credit should be given
(first author, second author, etc)
Order of authorship
Authors are responsible for determining authorship and for
specifying the order in which two are more author’s name
appear, in the byline. The general rule is that the name of
the principle contributor should appear first, with
subsequent names in order of decreasing contribution, but
this convention can vary from field to field.
Reviewers
Editorial review of a manuscript requires that the editors and
reviewers circulate and discuss the manuscript. During the
review process, the manuscript is a confidential and
privileged document.
Author’s copyright on an unpublished manuscript
Authors are protected by federal statute against unauthorized
use of their unpublished manuscripts. Under the Copyright
Act of 1976 (title17 of a United States Code), an
unpublished work is copyright from the moment it is fixed
in tangible from---for example, type on a page. Copyright
protection is “an incident of the process of authorship”
(US Copyright office, 1981, p.3).
Planning for Ethical compliance
Authors submitting a manuscript to an APA Manual are
required to submit a form starting their compliance with
ethical standards for publication as well as a form
disclosing any conflict of interest once a manuscript is
accepted.
Ethical Compliance checklist
1. Have you obtained permission for use for unpublished
instruments, procedure, or data that other researchers
might consider theirs (proprietary)
2. Have you properly cited other published work presented
in portions of your manuscript?
3. Are you prepared to answer questions about institutional
review of your study or studies?
4. Are you prepared to answer editorial questions about the
informed consent and debriefing procedure you used?
5. If you study involved animal subjects, are you prepared
to answer editorial questions about humane care and used
for animals in research?
6. How all authors reviewed the manuscript and agreed on
responsibility for its content?
7. Have you adequately protected the confidentiality of
research participants, clients, patients, organizations, third
parties, or others who were the source of information
presented in this manuscript?
8. Have all authors agreed to the order of authorship?
9. Have you obtained permission for use of any copyrighted
material you have included?
Thank you!
