In our modern world one of our biggest problems is food, or rather a lack of food. To combat this
problem Quorn was developed in 1925. However Quorn only recently became easily accessible to
South Africans. What I aim to achieve with this project is to establish whether Mycoproteins are
the best way forward. WHAT IS MYCOPROTEIN
Mycoproteins are derived from the fungus Fusarium venenatum . This fungus is grown in a
fermentation vat filled with glucose syrup and minerals and vitamins. To maintain growth oxygen
is pumped in, carbon dioxide is removed and the vat is kept at a temperature between 350C to
420C. To form the all important protein, nitrogen is consistently added to the fungus. The result of
all this optimization is that the fungus can double its mass every five hours.
However even with this fast production rate the fungus must be dried to ~10% water, this was the
main cost in the production of other single cell proteins. Of the dry mass of the fungus
approximately 48% is protein with the remainder being fat, carbohydrates and cell wall. Currently
the best single cell protein production system is unibio s u loop technology which converts natural
gas into a highly concentrated, 71%, protein product. The mycoprotein used in Quorn was chosen
above the natural gas system because the hyphae in the fungus are similar in length and width to
genuine muscle fibres which gives the quorn a more realistic meaty texture.

Suspense In The Liars
The text We Were Liars written by E. Lockhart follows the summers of a group of teenagers,
collectively called The Liars. The narrator of the story, Cadence Sinclair, suffers from an accident
on their island, and loses most of her memory. Throughout the chapters, she pieces together the
timeline and finds out what truly happened the summer of her accident. The story focuses around
the theme of choices and power, and the author pushes the idea that all actions have consequences.
An interesting and important episode in the book was when Cadence discovers that her accident
involved her killing her friends. The Liars decided to set fire to one of the family houses on the
island, attempting to get rid of the family feud over who had power over it. As Cadence was on the
ground floor, the fire grew upwards, and her 3 friends died as the house burnt, and she was the only
one able to escape. To me, this is one of the most interesting scenes in the book, as even after the
accident, Cadence was having conversations and physical contact with them, though in the end, you
find out that they were merely hallucinations brought on from her head injury, or even ghosts. I
liked how the author did this, as she showed only minor hints throughout the book that they weren t
alive, and it left you guessing until the end of the book. The way the author creates a feeling of

heights of a variety of different species (1). In a study comparing beech tree growth, factors such
as light and nutrient availability were shown to increase as tree height increased. Along with these
findings, it was found that growth rate declined as altitude increased (2). Another study observing
elevations effect on Malosma Laurinais showed that increased altitudes were correlated with
stronger and healthier leaves for the plants (3). Plants primarily rely on water, and sunlight to
grow, but other factors play a role in development as well. Elevation can have a drastic impact on
the speciation and growth of different plant species for many reasons. Surface level determines soil
moisture content, wind speed, and the amount of sunlight that a plot of vegetation will receive.
