Verbal and Nonverbal Communication
Verbal and Nonverbal Communication
When we are attempting to transfer our meaning to another person, we use three different modes,
methods, or channels to carry our intentions. We use these modes to tell people who we are, how
we experience the world, and the meaning we attach to our experience. We communicate verbally
and nonverbally, and often with mixed signals or noise.
When two persons, A and B, are attempting to communicate with each other, their communication
is distorted by their personalities, attitudes, values, belief systems, biases, the assumptions they are
making about each other, their experience, background, and so on. A s communication to B flows
through A s screen and through B s screen. When B responds to A, B is... Show more content on

There are a number of forms of body language. Ambulation is a first form. We associate different
meanings to different ways people carry their bodies from one place to another. How one carries
her body, whether she glides, strides, stomps, etc. tells a great deal about who she is and how she is
experiencing her environment.
Touching is perhaps the most powerful nonverbal communication form. The skin is the body s
largest organ, and through the skin we take in a variety of stimuli. We can communicate anger,
interest, trust, tenderness, warmth, and a variety of other emotions very potently through touching.
People differ, however, in their willingness to touch and be touched. Some people give out
nonverbal body signals that say that they do not want to be touched, and there are other people who
describe themselves and are described by others as touchy feely. There are many taboos associated
with this form of communication. Persons can learn about their own personalities and self concepts
through exploring their reactions to touching and being touched.
Eye contact is a third form of nonverbal communication. We tend to size each other up in terms of
trustworthiness through reactions to each other s eye contact. Try a little experiment with
yourself. Remember the last time you were driving down the road and passed a hitch hiker. The
odds are very high that you did not look him in the eye if you passed him up.

Electronic Health Record
Abstract Electronic health records (EHR) is more and more being utilized in organizations offering
healthcare to enhance the quality and safety of care. Understanding the advantages and
disadvantaging of EHR is essential in the nursing profession as nurses would learn its strengths and
weaknesses. This would help the nursing profession know how to deal with the weak areas of the
system. The topic on advantages and disadvantages of EHR has been widely researched on with
different researchers coming up with different opinions. Nurses ought to have knowledge on the
advantages and disadvantages of EHR systems for them to use systems efficiently. This would

This meant that there was 41 percent reduction in the risk of pulmonary embolism or deep vein
thrombosis ninety days following discharge. In addition, researchers have established that there is
a relation between efficiency and EHRs in the delivery of healthcare. EHRs societal benefits
Improved ability to conduct research is another less tangible benefit associated with EHR. When
the data for patients is electronically stored, makes the data easily accessible hence more
quantitative analysis can be undertaken for identification of evidence based best practices with
ease. In addition, public health researchers use electronic clinical data more actively which have
been amassed from a huge population hence coming up with research that benefits the society
(Mitka, 2011). Clinical data availability is limited but this form of data will increase. Probable
EHRs disadvantages Irrespective of the findings regarding the advantages of various functionalities
of EHRs, some probable drawbacks on EHR have been identified by researchers. These comprise of
financial concerns, temporal loss in productivity linked with adoption of EHR, change in workflow,
security and confidentiality concerns and several unintentional consequences. Financial concerns
comprise of costs of adoption and implementation, cost of maintenance, revenue loss due to
temporal low productivity, and revenue declination. These factors act as deterrent for physicians

Taking a Look at Quorn
PROJECT IDEA
In our modern world one of our biggest problems is food, or rather a lack of food. To combat this
problem Quorn was developed in 1925. However Quorn only recently became easily accessible to
South Africans. What I aim to achieve with this project is to establish whether Mycoproteins are
the best way forward. WHAT IS MYCOPROTEIN
Mycoproteins are derived from the fungus Fusarium venenatum . This fungus is grown in a
fermentation vat filled with glucose syrup and minerals and vitamins. To maintain growth oxygen
is pumped in, carbon dioxide is removed and the vat is kept at a temperature between 350C to
420C. To form the all important protein, nitrogen is consistently added to the fungus. The result of
all this optimization is that the fungus can double its mass every five hours.
However even with this fast production rate the fungus must be dried to ~10% water, this was the
main cost in the production of other single cell proteins. Of the dry mass of the fungus
approximately 48% is protein with the remainder being fat, carbohydrates and cell wall. Currently
the best single cell protein production system is unibio s u loop technology which converts natural
gas into a highly concentrated, 71%, protein product. The mycoprotein used in Quorn was chosen
above the natural gas system because the hyphae in the fungus are similar in length and width to
genuine muscle fibres which gives the quorn a more realistic meaty texture.

Does the media use subliminal advertising as a tool for...
Media these days, whether print or electronic, is being used by the general population as a tool to
stay informed. Whether someone wants to get up to date with the latest events around the world or
just wants to find out if their favorite team has won, media is the way to go. We trust the media to
keep the whole world updated and connected. But, is the media exploiting our blind trust by
subconsciously manipulating us through subliminal advertising? Firstly, what is subliminal
advertising? It is a technique in which the consumer is exposed to product or brand advertising
such as pictures or songs related to the product without the consumer being consciously aware of it.
This may include ads during the airing of different sports matches or... Show more content on

This experiment was conducted by James M. Vicary, who was a psychologist and marketing
researcher. In the experiment, the words drink Coca Cola and eat popcorn were projected on the
screen for 1/3,000 of a second during the screening of movies. After the experiment, there were
numerous reports in the news regarding the results which stated that there was an increase in the
sales of popcorn and Coke after the experiment began. Although these results were not given much
credibility due to the absence of a control group, the exposure of this experiment made people
realise that they were being targeted subconsciously.
A big component of subliminal advertising is repetitive advertising. This method has been used a
lot in the past and is still being used today. Examples of this can be found all around us. If you
turn on the television these days. you will see commercials for a specific product multiple times
during a short period of time. This strategy is applied in order to reinforce the image of that
product in the consumer s mind. If a person sees a commercial a few times, then he or she may or
may not buy the product. Their behaviour will depend totally on the fact that did they like what
they saw in the commercial or not. But if they are shown the commercial again and again, then they
become curious about the product and this is enough to initiate a trial purchase. A.S.C. Ehrenberg,

Psychology and Yellow Bile Essay

cope more effectively with the challenges he faces. Jack is in second grade and is having a hard

Suspense In The Liars
The text We Were Liars written by E. Lockhart follows the summers of a group of teenagers,
collectively called The Liars. The narrator of the story, Cadence Sinclair, suffers from an accident
on their island, and loses most of her memory. Throughout the chapters, she pieces together the
timeline and finds out what truly happened the summer of her accident. The story focuses around
the theme of choices and power, and the author pushes the idea that all actions have consequences.
An interesting and important episode in the book was when Cadence discovers that her accident
involved her killing her friends. The Liars decided to set fire to one of the family houses on the
island, attempting to get rid of the family feud over who had power over it. As Cadence was on the
ground floor, the fire grew upwards, and her 3 friends died as the house burnt, and she was the only
one able to escape. To me, this is one of the most interesting scenes in the book, as even after the
accident, Cadence was having conversations and physical contact with them, though in the end, you
find out that they were merely hallucinations brought on from her head injury, or even ghosts. I
liked how the author did this, as she showed only minor hints throughout the book that they weren t
alive, and it left you guessing until the end of the book. The way the author creates a feeling of
suspense throughout the novel because of this left me wanting to keep reading. Cadence
remembers the fire at first, but not her

that Kudler Foods had a low profit at that reporting time. The debt to total assets ratio was .28%,

idea for the book. Natural resources have been existent due to its capacity of regeneration. But we
are living at the time when we are using the natural resources at a rate when compared to natural
resources regeneration rate. Previous civilizations that have already fallen had the luxury of
exploiting its natural resources without fear of extinction. These civilizations lived in the times
when they existed expansive spaces on earth where they would migrate to the unsettled regions on

Essay about Controlling Corporate Farming
Controlling Corporate Farming
Sixty one percent of America s agriculture output comes from corporate farms (Abbey, 2002).
Nationwide there are 163,000 corporate operations and 63% of these are under contract to a
consolidated firm (Abbey, 2002). Stated by Fred Kirschenmann, If current trends of consolidation
continue, and all the farms in Iowa become 225,000 acre farms, there will be only 140 farms in the
entire state (Abbey, 2002).
Large corporations are coming in and taking over the farming industry. They are making it
almost impossible for small, family operated farms to survive. The six and a half million small
farms of 1935 decreased to 575,000 by 1998? (Abbey, 2002). The large... Show more content on

There are many anti corporate faming laws in place that have been around since about the 1930?s
that were originated in Kansas and North Dakota (McDonough, 2003). These laws are intended to
slow down large corporations coming into small communities and pushing out the small, family
operated farms. North Dakota was the first state, with nine other states right behind it. These states
include North Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin
and Nebraska.
In 1932, North Dakota originated its first anti corporation law. It prohibited any corporation from
farming there. This law seemed to be extreme so it was amended in 1981 stating that there would
only be fifteen or fewer corporate shareholders (www.celdf.org). These laws have inhibited
corporate farming from taking over North Dakota, making it a better place for local agriculture. If
these laws aren?t followed, there are penalties in place to punish the violators with fines up to
$25,000.
Kansas passed their anti corporation laws in 1995, which ?prohibited corporations of any kind
from owning or acquiring any agricultural land? (www.celdf.org). There are stockholders that are
given rights to the land and they have to be directly involved with the production of the farm, and
this is how they prevent the corporations from taking

attracted a lot of popularity mostly among those a living in the cities. Nevertheless, this type of car
is also well known for the shortage of its comfortable such as the restrained sitting posture. This

Gautama Buddha and Siddhartha
Throughout one s entire existence he/she goes through countless trials to discover our true Self or
some sort of spiritual enlightenment. Along the way one may encounter many teachers that can
guide us along several different paths while telling us what they think is right or wrong. They offer
us guidance and assistance, but still yet one makes his or her own decisions. Clearly portrayed in
the German novella Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, we can easily point out the importance of
teachers in ones life and how they can simply guide us and lead us to finding our Self. Throughout
the text it is obvious that Siddhartha had many guides such as the Samanas, Gotama, and Kamala
that ultimately led to the discovery of his enlightenment. Undoubtedly,... Show more content on

As soon as the Samanas cease their spiritual practices, the real world comes rushing back, and
whatever enlightenment has been achieved dies away. Since Siddharatha is searching for a
permanent answer, he cannot follow the Samanas. Thus, this leads to his next spiritual guide,
Gotama. In addition to Siddharthas many teachers, he meets an enlightened fellow named Gotama.
Gotama seems to radiate pure enlightenment. His teachings include Buddhism s Eightfold Path, the
Fourfold Way, and other aspects of Buddhism, as well as many practices similar to those of the
Samanas. Siddhartha soon dedicates himself to these teachings. As seen in the text, Gotama talked
about suffering, the origin of suffering, the way to release from suffering. Life was pain, the world
was full of suffering, but the page to release from suffering had been found. There was salvation for
those who went the way of the Buddha. (page 29) Siddhartha indeed believed that Gotama held the
key that unlocked his own personal enlightenment because Gotama in turn was enlightened himself.
Another example on how Gotama led Siddhartha to further advance the discovery of himself was
when Siddhartha unexpectedly meets Gotama in the grove and he speaks to him about his doctrine,
praising his victory in finding the unbroken chain of being, of cause and effect. As quoted in the
text, Everything is completely clear and proved. You show the world as a complete, unbroken

Dear White People Analysis
A Netflix TV show, Dear White People produced by Justin Simien, is about the students of
Winchester University. This show tends to target not only the Netflix customers, but the black and
white audience as well; the entire first season generally focuses on the media, racial, and gender
roles within the community as well as the mainstream problem of the unrecognized white privilege
by white skinned people. Looking up who the producer is, it turns out that Simien is a black
skinned man. Therefore, he fully understands the politics and the human behavior towards the black
racefrom the white race (considering racism towards people with his skin color has been around
for so long). Being black skinned is already clear for many people to assume that he probably has
dealt with the racism majority of his life, considering the repeating themes throughout the show.
Even with the title, the producer is purposefully calling out to the specific audiences in a
straightforward way. According to some reviews, many have concluded that Dear White Peopleis
extremely offensive to them. While watching the show, there were a few significant and periodic
themes that showed throughout the first season and the major themes I chose were important how
the roles of media played throughout the show. As a result, the roles of the media within the show

Short stories, Powder written by Tobias Wolff and Reunion by John CheeverOur main characters
both learn something about their fathers and themselves.
The short story Power by Tobias Wolff, is a first person story about a boy s trip with his father on
Christmas eve. His mother and father have been considering a divorce for quite sometimes and so
his mother is quite over protective of letting her son spend time with his father, especially on such
an important family holiday. The protagonist, being the son, is quiet and worried for most of the
story, but has a lot on his mind and is constantly aware of his surroundings. He is aware that it is
very possible that his father will not be able to get him home to his mother s dinner on time. He
believes in strong relationships so he is very aware of the high chance of divorce papers showing
up after the holiday season if he doesn t not arrive on time. In turn, this would make the boy s
father the antagonist since the father is the only obstacle between the boy arriving home on time
and not making it at all. Well there is also the big snow storm that hits, but we can ignore that for
now. I can tell the father has

Jane And Finch Sociology
The generalization of crime and violence in Jane and Finch has earned the neighbourhood a
negative reputation. The media s depiction of the area is a community corrupted by: violence,
drugs, gangs and poverty. This has left an undesirable image of suffering, as a result of living in
the Jane Finch community. Society has deemed the community an unsafe place to live and grow
up in. The media s scrutiny only portray negative stereotypes about the area and has not grasped

Jane and Finch has been labelled a bad community, driven by: gang wars, drugs and gun
violence. Many Torontonians avoid the community in fear of being physically harmed. This is
due to the media s generalization of crime and violence within the Jane and Finch. They only
portray the negative events that occur within the communities boarders. But, Jane and Finch has
shown remarkable improvement. Criminal activity has continuously dropped in recent years.
For example: assault occurrences dropped from 418 in 2008 to 299 in 2011, breaking and
entering incidents dropped from 193 in 2007 to 84 in 2011, stolen vehicles declined 145 in 2006
to 37 in 2011. The media makes Jane and Finch seem like the most dangerous place in Toronto.
However, other communities within the Greater Toronto Area have higher criminal rate compared
to Jane and Finch. A prime example would be the West Humber Clairville community, with 390
reported assaults in 2011, 175 breaking and entering incidents in 2011 and 288 stolen vehicles in
2011. The West Humber Clairville community had higher crime activity in every category than Jane

etc. The media s constant exposure of crime within the Jane Finch community have made it seem
like the worst place in Toronto, but, in reality other places are more

Article Summary Of Camille Paglia s On Date Rape
On Date Rape is an article written by Camille Paglia, which argues the young women of today
pay not much care about their safety while they re enjoying the freedom they deserve. According
to the writer of this article, who also is a humanities professor and a cultural critic, a woman
should pay more attention to their safety while they pursuit the freedom as a man does. Because a
woman is likely becoming a victimin a rapecase. In this article, the author also implies that even
the law should protect women from the rape, still, women themselves should build up a self
protection awareness to keep them away from the rape crime. However, even this article points
out a main argument about self protection awareness is necessary for a woman, but more or less of
its points didn t support the main argument of this article. In additional, the focus of my article is
about to analysis the article of Camille Paglia, On Date Rape. Besides, I ll point out some
misconceptions about her article.
The first point I recognized in Paglia s article is the third paragraph of the article, which explains
that because of the young feminists come from a white, middle class world, so that they expect
everything should be safe as they think. On the other side, because the black or Hispanic women
grow up in a different environment, where full of sexual culture, hence they will pay more
attention of their safety (Paglia, paragraph 3). In my judgment, the rape crime is not only existing

2016 Oscar Awards Controversy
SummaryThe article explores the difference between 2016 Oscar Awards, which was surrounded
by controversy regarding the lack of diversity, and the 2017 show, which attempted to
demonstrate diversity. According to the post, there were no actors of color nominated for the
Oscars for the last two years, and the issue arose some debates in 2016. As a result, seven
minority actors were nominated, six of which were black. Denzel Washington became the most
nominated black actor after he received a nomination for his role in Fences. On the other hand,
Viola Davis is the most nominated black actress for her supporting role in Fences. Similarly,
Octavia Spencer landed a nominee for Hidden Figures while Naomie Harris landed one for
Moonlight. Other actresses nominated from the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 2016 Oscar nominations sparked a heated debate over why the show had only white
nominees and prompted the academy to address the lack of diversity. However, it is imperative
to note that the event only represents what is happening in Hollywood and the filming studios. If
the industry does not give opportunities to the minorities to shine, they are not likely to appear
in the Oscars. As several leaders in the sector of complained, the minority rarely get chances to
work in front of the camera, which defines their presence at the award shows and not just the
Oscars. Nonetheless, it is a diversity issue that deserves attention and should be remedied. It is a
source of difference, especially in a country that prides itself as a multicultural nation. The Oscars
should embrace the diversity that reflects the entirety of the nation and simply the majority.
Moreover, such an action would demonstrate to be beneficial not only to the United States but also
the Oscar Academy, which will be able to assess a wider pool of talent in the industry and ensure
that the voice of everyone gets

3.The company should probably use direct labor hours as the activity base, since the fit of the
regression line to the data is much tighter than it is with tons mined. The R2 for the regression
using direct labor hours as the activity base is twice as large as for the regression using tons
mined as the activity base. However, managers should look more closely at the costs and try to
determine why utilities costs are more closely tied to direct labor hours than to the number of tons
mined.

The Construction Of A Social Policy
A Social policy entails the provision of social services in a state, that can be categorized into the
broad dimensions of society and politics, the construction of a social policy is concerned with
the issues faced in the provision and administration of the essentialities of a society (Spicker). A
rather varying category of factors fall under the study of a social policy; these factors such as
literacy, health, employment and crime comprise of perhaps the most major implications on the
wellbeing of a society s members, therefore it can also be said that the social policy is the study of
the systems of a society that constitute its members wellbeing (Reisch). Socialismrefers to political
and economic theory of social organization where the factors of production and capital is owned by
the community as a whole which is the reverse of liberalism which promotes private ownership and
depends highly on the efficiency of the market forces. Where liberalism focuses on private benefit
and individualism, socialism is inclined towards societal growth and common interest hence,
promoting standard educational, health and housing facilities to the entire society to reduce class
difference. Socialism is sometimes used synonymously with communism, however, socialism,
although similar in demanding rights for the working class, differs in its formation and
implications. It grew mainly through the formation of groups both communal and occupational,
which demanded more rights and greater

Small Steps By Louis Sachar
Have you ever read or watched the movie, Holes ? Who was your favorite character? Wow!
Armpit? Well today must be your lucky day because in the book Small Steps by Louis Sachar, it
revolves around Armpit s life! To start off, one of my favorite quotes in the story would be, This is
Theodore Johnson, (Sachar, 2). I know you may be thinking, What s so significant about this
quote? Thing is, in Holes, everyone called him Armpit. We never actually knew what his real
name was, but now we do. You might be curious about his nickname Armpit, where did that
come from? Well one day at Camp Green Lake Juvenile Correction Center, Theodore aka Armpit,
got stung by a scorpion and the pain gradually traveled up through his body and stayed at his
armpit. Another quote I enjoyed was, But I m taking small steps cause I don t know where I m
going. I m taking small steps and I don t know what to say. Small steps, trying to pull myself
together and maybe I ll discover a clue along the way! (Sachar, 143). Personally, I love finding
quotes that have the title in it. I feel as if this would be the reason behind the title of the novel.
Also this quote showed Armpit s thoughts. He has completely changed ever since he got out of
Camp Green Lake. He lost weight, he takes school seriously and tries to get out of trouble.
Anyways, this story starts off with Armpit holding a shovel once again, but this time he was
getting paid $7.65 an hour for it. It has been years since he has

The Link Between Nazi Propaganda And The Holocaust Essay
Hitler believed that propaganda from the allies was the main reason that the Germans lost
during World War I and felt that this form of warfare needed to be a primary tool in modern
warfare. He spoke of this belief in his book Mein Kampf well before the start of the second World
War. Hitler felt that the public needed to be inundated with the ideology of the state at all times
and through all mediums (Jowett and O Donnell 2). To do this, he said everything from child s
story book to the last newspaper, every theater, every cinema and every advertisement must be
brought into the service of this single mission (qt. in Qualter ix). This onslaught of propaganda led
to the Holocaustby leaving no other option open to the German people... Show more content on

The Nazi s did use propaganda in this negative sense but in an underhanded and subversive way.
They backed up all their false reports with scientific studies and claims of a better human race.
Propaganda is hard to define as most definitions do not cover the full meaning of the word. The
Webster s Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary defines propaganda as the systematic propagation
or discrediting of a given doctrine or cause by circulation of polemical material, such as posters
and leaflets (1353). However, this definition does not cover the full scope of the of the word.
Terence Qualter also feels the definition for propaganda needs to be more refined for its new usage.
The definition that he gives is the deliberate attempt...(to) form, control, or alter the attitudes of
other groups...(with) the use of the instruments of communication (27 28). He goes on to say that
the propaganda must be aimed at the group in general because that is the basic nature of the word,
in that the most effective propaganda is the propaganda which has a large audience. Qualter does
mention, however, that there need be no difference in the propaganda to persuade one and the
propaganda to persuade the many (28). Germany did this by controlling the flow of information into
the country.

Chemical Surveillance Program For Leukemia
Benzene Exposure Leukemia in Factory Workers Examined
Background
As part of an occupational surveillance program for leukemia from excessive benzene exposure
1,832 factory workers were screened using a new diagnostic test. It was determined of those
exposed, 214 tested positive, 29 tested negative and 90 non exposure tested positive. With the use
of a contingency table we will evaluate the measures of validity of the screening test used.
In the study of the association between benzene exposure and leukemia causality has been
established using the Bradford Hill criteria for two specific agents: Ionizing radiation and benzene.
Evidence has been established that high daily exposure to benzene in both a time dose relationship

However, it has been noted by Pagano et al., that results on the environmental factors contain

populations at risk (2006). Environmental factors such as socioeconomic status, alcohol
consumption, and smoking are known contributors to the development of leukemia (Pagano et al.,

frequent overall in populations from lower socioeconomic backgrounds (Nisse et al., 2001). A

Analysis Of Common Sense By George Orwell
American history has been founded on various writings which help shape our evolving nation.
Common Sense, by Thomas Paine in particular has had a tremendous impact on the unification of
common people and leaders. Ultimately, unifying both parties of people would lead to the fight for
colonial independence. Although the pamphlet contributed well thought ideas and a new
perspective on winning the fight, it wasn t as well written as it could ve been. Paine is credited for
the persuasive writingstyle he used which in turn ended up changing the course of history. But, had
he used and omitted George Orwells principles of good writing, his pamphlet as a whole would

where Paine is trying to make it seem like he knows what he s talking about. For example,

Negative Dangers Of Social Media
The media is an umbrella term describing a whole world of technological advancement, and
holds a range of services that aid the spread of information. There s no doubt that the media has
done a lot to improve the lives of those who have access to it, one way or another, but what if
media and its usage in today s context is more damaging than beneficial? Just how damaging can
it really be? How can we be aware of these dangers? Once aware of these dangers, what can be done
to guarantee future adolescents don t fall deep into its pressures?
Social media, or media in general, is worried to be one of the main culprits that might contribute to
the rapid development of body dissatisfaction, and dietary restraint, especially among adolescent
girls (Masters, McLean, Paxton, Wertheim). In particular, higher use of appearance based Internet
can be associated with lower weight satisfaction and higher drive for thinness in fifteen year old
girls, as well as contribute to the internalization of appearance ideals and body surveillance
(Masters, McLean, Paxton, Wertheim). However, these are not the only dangers present.
In an article by Nazir S. Hawi, and Maya Samaha titled, The Relations Among Social Media

and some of the addictive behaviors that can occur to those who use media. The article shares

Factors On The Effect Of Elevation Effects On Plant Growth
Elevations Effects on Plant Growth
James Walters, 8/25/2017, Biology 132 01, Alan Liang Jillian Beard
Introduction
Plants rely on the environment in which they live to grow, and different environmental conditions
provide a wide array of different foliage. Many studies have concluded that altitude effects the
heights of a variety of different species (1). In a study comparing beech tree growth, factors such
as light and nutrient availability were shown to increase as tree height increased. Along with these
findings, it was found that growth rate declined as altitude increased (2). Another study observing
elevations effect on Malosma Laurinais showed that increased altitudes were correlated with
stronger and healthier leaves for the plants (3). Plants primarily rely on water, and sunlight to
grow, but other factors play a role in development as well. Elevation can have a drastic impact on
the speciation and growth of different plant species for many reasons. Surface level determines soil
moisture content, wind speed, and the amount of sunlight that a plot of vegetation will receive.
Common knowledge of how plants grow, suggest that the high soil moisture content at low
elevations will increase plant height due to the excess of resources being provided.
Plants in the campus lodge area in Brocton, NY have a vast variety of different growing conditions
and climates. We decided to examine if different soil elevations had an impact on the growth of
plants in this area. Foliage

The king crab of Phillips belongs to fresh seafood, which means it has huge market potential.
Customers tend to buy food that is easy cooked and fresh, which is a feature of the king crab
product. The IBSS is a nation wide trade show which could attract a lot of exhibitors and
attendance. Making use of this platform could help Phillips to build its reputation and promote its
products at the same time.
Threat: Just because the IBSS could attract a large amount of exhibitors, the competition during the
trade show is fierce. Though there are so many potential customers would appear at the trade show,
how could Phillips beat the competitors and attracts enough customers to its booth. Another threat
for king crab is the possible rejection of the retailers because they would feel risky to replace an old

contrary, it does not support all animal rights; the law ought to emphasis those out in business too.
Beyond that, in 1976 adjustments were made in the amendment. In fact, this time it includes more
steps to those companies in the animal testing business (Donna 16). Each corporation is required
to register and keep records of the species. Again it had affected those who are employed in

owners must provide treatments (Donna 8). Signifying hounds would receive yearly check up on
their satiability of well nutrients. However the act was expanding, it excluded most of the rights
towards animals. In addition to the amendment, in 1985 it was re modified again. It incorporated

and a physical environment, to balance the pain and stress for the species, and minimize the use of
drugs (Donna 8). Despite the reduction of drugs it does not improve the consumption towards the

ability to fast forward, rewind and pause time. It is an impressive theatreplay, of three young
siblings Kyle, Jessie and Troy waiting in a car abandoned by their mother, who frantically had to
abscond after the abuse she obtained from her husband. The current issue of domestic violenceis
skillfully handled in this Epic theatre style play Hoods ,
The proportional use of Character, narration and episodic structure to modernise the contemporary
play Hoods generates s a production abounding with challenging dramatic action and significance.
Primarily via the two Hood narrators, this performance effectively contests the viewers to examine
their own soul against others surviving in hardship and confront this cruelty with thoughtful
consideration.
Throughout the play two actors role played multiple characters. Each actor morphed into another
character. They had impressive versatility of their characters and played each role with emotion.
The facial expressions they exercised appeared to contribute to the

The Invention Of The Driverless Car
In this day and age, we as humans must accept that there are going to be many cultural
changes. No doubt that we persist to create new, mind blowing technology almost every year,
dislodging manifold new ideas. As a matter of fact, in early 2000, the first smartphone was
introduced, charming the world. At that point, who would have ever predicted that someday we
would be carrying small, handheld computers in our pockets? However, the first computer was
introduced in 1946. Although the computer was the size of an entire room and weighed 50 tons,
it came as a shock to the world that this was even achievable. In fact, as living organisms, it is in
our DNA to adapt and evolve to our better selves. Now, in the year 2017, we have announced the
invention of a driverless car. Strangely enough, the idea of a normal car would have been crazy
in 1000. In addition, this driverless car could bring about a better, more advanced version of our
lifestyle. The first reason that the new driverless car is extremely beneficial is how you can ride
inside of the car without controlling it. The passage states, People will no longer have to do the
driving themselves. When you re riding in the car, you can read a book or finish some... Show more

Consequently, if a teenage girl breaks her right foot and is unable to press the gas pedal, the
driverless car can easily aid her by driving her to wherever she needs to be. Using the driverless
cars, people that have been burdened with a loss of their legs can now independently travel to
their destination without someone having to constantly help them. In fact, driverless cars can give
disabled people a sense of more control when it comes to driving. Usually, they can feel very
trapped due to their disabilities. Now, they can go wherever they please without worrying about not

Distortion In Doctor Strange
It s easy to go from having it all and fall straight to the bottom, but it is not easy to come back
from the bottom and return to the top. As shown in Doctor Strange, Stephen Strange is a
phenomenally known neurosurgeon who loses all use of his hands after a car accident. Due to
the stubborn tendencies of Strange, he is left alone as he experiments in vain surgeries trying to
quickly return to his successful life. Once learning of a man who said to be paralyzed, yet
walked again somehow, Strange hunts him down to learn how he did it so fast. He is lead to a
place called Kamar Taj and taken under the wing of The Ancient One and learns of the mystic
energy they wield while also catching on quickly and also having to stop Kaecilius the villain.
Doctor Strange wields the strong characteristics of visual distortion, abstractionism and exaggerated
costuming, just like a German expressionist film. The use of distortion was superiorly used in the
film as it was used with the sets and glass, especially with the Mirror Dimension, a safe zone to
practice magic that is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These characteristics definitely helped the film and didn t hurt it at all, but the distortion was
definitely the film s main focus, as it was used the entire time, and was executed perfectly by the
director. Derricksons use of these characteristics was able to effectively leave a lasting mark on the
movie, even if it wasn t his intention, these characteristics were easily spotted and made the movie
better from a movie goers opinion. This film, in honesty, showed even more characteristic but the
ones mentioned definitely proved themselves to be the top ones to be mentioned. In conclusion, it s
made clear that even in American produced films, German expressionist characteristics can be seen
and found even if the intention wasn t to include

school nurse
School Nurse Spending two days shadowing a school nurse was a wonderful experience. I had
the pleasure of doing my school nurse rotation at Fox Creek Junior High School. I never realized
how difficult and overwhelming it could be to be a school nurse. Ms. Bodauine was the nurse I
got to shadow. She spent her day doing paperwork, helping the sick and injured, and doing vision
and hearing screenings. There were several kids who came in throughout the day, approximately
twenty one per day that was either sick or injured. Upon each kids visit, I had the opportunity to
observe, assess, and communicate with them. I was able to observe behaviors of some children

Children that experienced real health care needs were, the ones that came in with swollen
tonsils, fevers, bloody noses, visible cuts and scrapes on elbows and knees, and a kid
complaining of chest pain that was diaphoretic and dizzy. A couple kids used manipulative
behavior to go home and a couple used it to spend the hour in the nurse s office to miss class.
One student stated that she had a headache and stomach ache and wanted to go home. She stated
the pain had been going on for two days. When asking if she wanted Tylenol for the headache
and crackers for the stomachache she said no she just wanted to go home. Ms. Boudauine did a
very good job at handling this situation. She explained to the girl how important it was to go to
class, but if she really weren t feeling well she would call her mother to come pick her up. Ms.
Boudauine was very caring and considerate toward the girl. The girl ended up going home, but
while waiting for her mother to arrive she sat in the nurse s office doing homework and chatting
with all the other students that came in. It just didn t seem as if she was really sick. The next day

Lactose Intolerance
Lactose intolerant individuals experience many uncomfortable symptoms after consumption of
lactose containing foods. This discomfort is largely due to a shortage or an absence of the
digestive enzyme lactase. Lactase is an enzyme located on the brush border of mucosal cells in the
small intestine (Stanfield, 2011). Normally, lactose is hydrolyzed by this enzymeand end products,
glucose and galactose, are readily absorbed into the bloodstream (Lomer, Parkes, Sanderson, 2008).
Without lactasethis mechanism is not possible and lactose problematically lingers as a disaccharide
in the small intestine s lumen. This paper will discuss the development of primary and secondary
lactose intolerance, the physiology behind the their symptoms, and the... Show more content on

that found in the stomach (McWilliams, 2012). Because of this, probiotics similar to these
microorganisms are sometimes used as a form of treatment for lactose intolerance. Treatment
through probiotics varies in its success because of the differences in individuals who suffer from

The Gaze In George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty-Four
Empowerment and disempowerment using the gaze is manifested as one of the fundamental
themes in George Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four (1949). Written in 1944, Nineteen Eighty
Four is a novel which portrays the experiences of Winston Smith, the protagonist and other
significant characters such as Julia who are bound to live within a totalitarian regime in which the
powerful forces are manipulation and fear. The work of literature demonstrates the visionary
concept of how totalitarian regimes may evolve if they were permitted to do so. The power of the
gaze is investigated in Nineteen Eighty Fourto assess how the protagonists in the book are given
power and also disempowered by the supervising gaze, the desiring gaze and the egalitarian gaze.
Hence, formulating the following research question: How does the notion of the gaze, give power
to and disempower the protagonists in Nineteen Eighty Four?... Show more content on

The influence of the gaze is embodied in unique ways within the totalitarian regime with an
objective to monitor and supervise the citizens behavior. The structure of the empowering gazes
within the two literary works provide the support for a scholarly inquiry of the gaze. Hence, the

are bound to live within a totalitarian society.

Evelyn Boyd Granville
When people think about mathematicians, they typically refer to white, doctorate educated male.
However, there are more women budding into the field of mathematics. This paper will focus on
one special woman, an African American woman by the name of Evelyn Boyd Granville. She is not
the first African American woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics, but she, unlike Euphemia
Lofton Haynes, stayed more out of the educationfield and primarily worked for NASA,
contributing to many expeditions in space. Her contributions have inspired many young girls to
look into and pursue a career in the field of mathematics. Granville was born on May 1st, 1924,
to father William Boyd and mother Julia Walker Boyd. She was raised in Washington D.C. by her
mother and her aunt, both of whom worked as examiners for the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and
Printing (Williams). Granville was the younger of two children, with her older sister being Doris.

valedictorian. Because her high schoolconsisted of so many teachers that held degrees from top...

challenging sexist and racist stereotypes that had held women like her back for years. She opened

Essay about History of Nature and Nurture
Abstract Nature vs. nurture has been discussed by philosophers in the past and by scientists most
recently. Philosophers such as Plato argued that all knowledge was inherited through your parent
and when you were told something you didn t learn it you were just reminded of it. Aristotle
however argued that all humans were born with a blank slate and built on it with influence from
there environment. In the 1700 s the empiricists and the internalists took over the argument. They
fought through letters explaining there point of views and denouncing the others. This leads to
Pavlov coming up with the idea of behaviorism in the early 1900В‘s. Behaviorism became the new
wave of Psychology and influenced a lean towards the nurture side. It was... Show more content on

Two philosophers, G.W. Leibniz and John Locke, were main representatives of their respected
explanations. Leibniz promoted the internalism point of view. Cowie states, ...Leibniz s position
on this issue is, of course, that the tabula is far from rasa: В‘The soul inherently contains the
sources of various notions and doctrines, which external objects merely rouse up... (Cowie, 1999,
p. 7). Leibniz argued against Locke and other empiricists stated that ...there is no way ideas which
come into the mind from outside can be formed into beliefs and judgments without the operation
of specific internal mechanisms (Cowie, 1999, p. 17). At the same time, John Locke and his
fellow philosophers campaigned for empiricism. Like Aristotle, the philosophers believed that
humans thoughts and actions were determined not by innate factors, but by the their unique
experiences (Ashcraft, 1998). Locke argued against the internalists by examining different human
processes such as logic and reasoning. He would ask how it was possible to use logic and
reasoning if people were born with all of the knowledge they would ever acquire (Cowie 1999, p.
19). The contrasting views of the two groups had begun the nature vs. nurture debate, which would
linger in the fields of philosophy and psychology for decades. A point should be made that even
though the interalists and empiricists felt strongly about their theories, the

Playstation Vs Xbox Essay
You sitting on the couch! Do you even game, bro!? Well if you do come down here to Walmart
where we now sell Playstations and Xboxes! These is what you usually hear from companies on
commercials these days and you get excited cause their selling gaming consoles. Now you re stuck
in a conundrum you don t know which to buy a Playstation or Xbox, so even though they have a
few major differences they are also extremely alike.
First Xbox, let s look at the design and user interface. The Xbox is huge way bigger than the
PS4. On the top half of the the console is a vent which means if you want to put something on
top of it forget about it. Towards the backside of the Xbox is three USB ports, but only two are
for controllers. The controller ports are in the back are very awkward because there usually in
the front. The Xbox runs off a Windows 10 UI (User Interface) which makes the home screen
more complex and harder to find things but very nice looking. Now let s look at the exclusive
titles for the Xbox. Some titles include Halo, Gears of War, Titanfall, and Sunset Overdrive.
These titles are huge but since the Xbox runs off of a windows 10 UI that means some games can
also be played on the PC. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the PS4 s USB ports are in the front like a normal gaming console. Now for the PS4 s UI, it s a
whole lot simpler and to me it s much neater. The user interface has to distinct sections, lower half
of the UI is the main menu where you can access recently used apps and games, the upper half is

Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Verbal and Nonverbal Communication When we are attempting to transfer our meaning to another person, we use three different modes, methods, or channels to carry our intentions. We use these modes to tell people who we are, how we experience the world, and the meaning we attach to our experience. We communicate verbally and nonverbally, and often with mixed signals or noise. When two persons, A and B, are attempting to communicate with each other, their communication is distorted by their personalities, attitudes, values, belief systems, biases, the assumptions they are making about each other, their experience, background, and so on. Ambulation is a first form. We associate different meanings to different ways people carry their bodies from one place to another. How one carries her body, whether she glides, strides, stomps, etc. tells a great deal about who she is and how she is experiencing her environment. Touching is perhaps the most powerful nonverbal communication form. The skin is the body s largest organ, and through the skin we take in a variety of stimuli. We can communicate anger, interest, trust, tenderness, warmth, and a variety of other emotions very potently through touching. People differ, however, in their willingness to touch and be touched. Some people give out nonverbal body signals that say that they do not want to be touched, and there are other people who describe themselves and are described by others as touchy feely. There are many taboos associated with this form of communication. Persons can learn about their own personalities and self concepts through exploring their reactions to touching and being touched. Eye contact is a third form of nonverbal communication. We tend to size each other up in terms of trustworthiness through reactions to each other s eye contact. Try a little experiment with yourself. Remember the last time you were driving down the road and passed a hitch hiker. The odds are very high that you did not look him in the eye if you passed him up. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Taking a Look at Quorn PROJECT IDEA In our modern world one of our biggest problems is food, or rather a lack of food. To combat this problem Quorn was developed in 1925. However Quorn only recently became easily accessible to South Africans. What I aim to achieve with this project is to establish whether Mycoproteins are the best way forward. WHAT IS MYCOPROTEIN Mycoproteins are derived from the fungus Fusarium venenatum . This fungus is grown in a fermentation vat filled with glucose syrup and minerals and vitamins. To maintain growth oxygen is pumped in, carbon dioxide is removed and the vat is kept at a temperature between 350C to 420C. To form the all important protein, nitrogen is consistently added to the fungus. The result of all this optimization is that the fungus can double its mass every five hours. However even with this fast production rate the fungus must be dried to ~10% water, this was the main cost in the production of other single cell proteins. Of the dry mass of the fungus approximately 48% is protein with the remainder being fat, carbohydrates and cell wall. Currently the best single cell protein production system is unibio s u loop technology which converts natural gas into a highly concentrated, 71%, protein product. The mycoprotein used in Quorn was chosen above the natural gas system because the hyphae in the fungus are similar in length and width to genuine muscle fibres which gives the quorn a more realistic meaty texture. Whether someone wants to get up to date with the latest events around the world or just wants to find out if their favorite team has won, media is the way to go. We trust the media to keep the whole world updated and connected. But, is the media exploiting our blind trust by subconsciously manipulating us through subliminal advertising? Firstly, what is subliminal advertising? It is a technique in which the consumer is exposed to product or brand advertising such as pictures or songs related to the product without the consumer being consciously aware of it. This may include ads during the airing of different sports matches or... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This experiment was conducted by James M. After the experiment, there were numerous reports in the news regarding the results which stated that there was an increase in the sales of popcorn and Coke after the experiment began. Although these results were not given much credibility due to the absence of a control group, the exposure of this experiment made people realise that they were being targeted subconsciously. A big component of subliminal advertising is repetitive advertising. This method has been used a lot in the past and is still being used today. Examples of this can be found all around us. If you turn on the television these days. you will see commercials for a specific product multiple times during a short period of time. This strategy is applied in order to reinforce the image of that product in the consumer s mind. If a person sees a commercial a few times, then he or she may or may not buy the product. Their behaviour will depend totally on the fact that did they like what they saw in the commercial or not. But if they are shown the commercial again and again, then they become curious about the product and this is enough to initiate a trial purchase. A.S.C. Ehrenberg, a professor of ... The narrator of the story, Cadence Sinclair, suffers from an accident on their island, and loses most of her memory. Throughout the chapters, she pieces together the timeline and finds out what truly happened the summer of her accident. The story focuses around the theme of choices and power, and the author pushes the idea that all actions have consequences. An interesting and important episode in the book was when Cadence discovers that her accident involved her killing her friends. The Liars decided to set fire to one of the family houses on the island, attempting to get rid of the family feud over who had power over it. As Cadence was on the ground floor, the fire grew upwards, and her 3 friends died as the house burnt, and she was the only one able to escape. To me, this is one of the most interesting scenes in the book, as even after the accident, Cadence was having conversations and physical contact with them, though in the end, you find out that they were merely hallucinations brought on from her head injury, or even ghosts. I liked how the author did this, as she showed only minor hints throughout the book that they weren t alive, and it left you guessing until the end of the book. The way the author creates a feeling of suspense throughout the novel because of this left me wanting to keep reading. Cadence remembers the fire at first, but not her ... However, it is imperative to note that the event only represents what is happening in Hollywood and the filming studios. If the industry does not give opportunities to the minorities to shine, they are not likely to appear in the Oscars. As several leaders in the sector of complained, the minority rarely get chances to work in front of the camera, which defines their presence at the award shows and not just the Oscars. Nonetheless, it is a diversity issue that deserves attention and should be remedied. It is a source of difference, especially in a country that prides itself as a multicultural nation. The Oscars should embrace the diversity that reflects the entirety of the nation and simply the majority. The Construction Of A Social Policy A Social policy entails the provision of social services in a state, that can be categorized into the broad dimensions of society and politics, the construction of a social policy is concerned with the issues faced in the provision and administration of the essentialities of a society (Spicker). A rather varying category of factors fall under the study of a social policy; these factors such as literacy, health, employment and crime comprise of perhaps the most major implications on the wellbeing of a society s members, therefore it can also be said that the social policy is the study of the systems of a society that constitute its members wellbeing (Reisch). Socialismrefers to political and economic theory of social organization where the factors of production and capital is owned by the community as a whole which is the reverse of liberalism which promotes private ownership and depends highly on the efficiency of the market forces. Where liberalism focuses on private benefit and individualism, socialism is inclined towards societal growth and common interest hence, promoting standard educational, health and housing facilities to the entire society to reduce class difference. Thing is, in Holes, everyone called him Armpit. We never actually knew what his real name was, but now we do. You might be curious about his nickname Armpit, where did that come from? Well one day at Camp Green Lake Juvenile Correction Center, Theodore aka Armpit, got stung by a scorpion and the pain gradually traveled up through his body and stayed at his armpit. Another quote I enjoyed was, But I m taking small steps cause I don t know where I m going. I m taking small steps and I don t know what to say. Small steps, trying to pull myself together and maybe I ll discover a clue along the way! (Sachar, 143). Personally, I love finding quotes that have the title in it. I feel as if this would be the reason behind the title of the novel. Also this quote showed Armpit s thoughts. He has completely changed ever since he got out of Camp Green Lake. The Link Between Nazi Propaganda And The Holocaust Essay Hitler believed that propaganda from the allies was the main reason that the Germans lost during World War I and felt that this form of warfare needed to be a primary tool in modern warfare. He spoke of this belief in his book Mein Kampf well before the start of the second World War. Hitler felt that the public needed to be inundated with the ideology of the state at all times and through all mediums (Jowett and O Donnell 2). The Webster s Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary defines propaganda as the systematic propagation or discrediting of a given doctrine or cause by circulation of polemical material, such as posters and leaflets (1353). Factors On The Effect Of Elevation Effects On Plant Growth Elevations Effects on Plant Growth James Walters, 8/25/2017, Biology 132 01, Alan Liang Jillian Beard Introduction Plants rely on the environment in which they live to grow, and different environmental conditions provide a wide array of different foliage. Many studies have concluded that altitude effects the heights of a variety of different species (1). In a study comparing beech tree growth, factors such as light and nutrient availability were shown to increase as tree height increased. Along with these findings, it was found that growth rate declined as altitude increased (2). Another study observing elevations effect on Malosma Laurinais showed that increased altitudes were correlated with stronger and healthier leaves for the plants (3). Plants primarily rely on water, and sunlight to grow, but other factors play a role in development as well. Elevation can have a drastic impact on the speciation and growth of different plant species for many reasons. Surface level determines soil moisture content, wind speed, and the amount of sunlight that a plot of vegetation will receive. Common knowledge of how plants grow, suggest that the high soil moisture content at low elevations will increase plant height due to the excess of resources being provided. Plants in the campus lodge area in Brocton, NY have a vast variety of different growing conditions and climates. This discomfort is largely due to a shortage or an absence of the digestive enzyme lactase. Lactase is an enzyme located on the brush border of mucosal cells in the small intestine (Stanfield, 2011). Normally, lactose is hydrolyzed by this enzymeand end products, glucose and galactose, are readily absorbed into the bloodstream (Lomer, Parkes, Sanderson, 2008). Without lactasethis mechanism is not possible and lactose problematically lingers as a disaccharide in the small intestine s lumen. This paper will discuss the development of primary and secondary lactose intolerance, the physiology behind the their symptoms, and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fermented milk products have had probiotics added to them (such as Streptococcus thermophiles or Lactobacillus bulgaricus). These microorganisms ferment milk products so that lactose is no longer present or hardly present. These microorganisms are able to endure low pH environments, such as that found in the stomach (McWilliams, 2012). Because of this, probiotics similar to these microorganisms are sometimes used as a form of treatment for lactose intolerance. Treatment through probiotics varies in its success because of the differences in individuals who suffer from the condition (Lomer et al., ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. The Gaze In George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty-Four Empowerment and disempowerment using the gaze is manifested as one of the fundamental themes in George Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four (1949). Written in 1944, Nineteen Eighty Four is a novel which portrays the experiences of Winston Smith, the protagonist and other significant characters such as Julia who are bound to live within a totalitarian regime in which the powerful forces are manipulation and fear. The work of literature demonstrates the visionary concept of how totalitarian regimes may evolve if they were permitted to do so. The power of the gaze is investigated in Nineteen Eighty Fourto assess how the protagonists in the book are given power and also disempowered by the supervising gaze, the desiring gaze and the egalitarian gaze. Hence, formulating the following research question: How does the notion of the gaze, give power to and disempower the protagonists in Nineteen Eighty Four?... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The influence of the gaze is embodied in unique ways within the totalitarian regime with an objective to monitor and supervise the citizens behavior. The structure of the empowering gazes within the two literary works provide the support for a scholarly inquiry of the gaze. Michel Foucault s Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison , James D. • 49. Evelyn Boyd Granville When people think about mathematicians, they typically refer to white, doctorate educated male. However, there are more women budding into the field of mathematics. This paper will focus on one special woman, an African American woman by the name of Evelyn Boyd Granville. She is not the first African American woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics, but she, unlike Euphemia Lofton Haynes, stayed more out of the educationfield and primarily worked for NASA, contributing to many expeditions in space. Her contributions have inspired many young girls to look into and pursue a career in the field of mathematics. Granville was born on May 1st, 1924, to father William Boyd and mother Julia Walker Boyd. She was raised in Washington D.C. by her mother and her aunt, both of whom worked as examiners for the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing (Williams). Granville was the younger of two children, with her older sister being Doris. Granville attended Dunbar High School, which was a segregated institution, and graduated as valedictorian. Because her high schoolconsisted of so many teachers that held degrees from top... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being one of the first black women to receive a PhD in mathematics, she opened up the field to women, especially women of color, who were systematically drawn away from math because of the color of their skin or because of sexist exclusionary notions. Although her contributions to mathematics are seen more in a group effort, one cannot take away from the fact of her role as an inspiration to girls interested in the field of mathematics. With her widespread dedication to education and large investments of time for space programs, this woman was pivotal in challenging sexist and racist stereotypes that had held women like her back for years. She opened up positions for women of color in fields where they were never ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Essay about History of Nature and Nurture Abstract Nature vs. nurture has been discussed by philosophers in the past and by scientists most recently. Philosophers such as Plato argued that all knowledge was inherited through your parent and when you were told something you didn t learn it you were just reminded of it. Aristotle however argued that all humans were born with a blank slate and built on it with influence from there environment. In the 1700 s the empiricists and the internalists took over the argument. They fought through letters explaining there point of views and denouncing the others. This leads to Pavlov coming up with the idea of behaviorism in the early 1900В‘s. Behaviorism became the new wave of Psychology and influenced a lean towards the nurture side. It was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two philosophers, G.W. Leibniz and John Locke, were main representatives of their respected explanations. Leibniz promoted the internalism point of view. Cowie states, ...Leibniz s position on this issue is, of course, that the tabula is far from rasa: В‘The soul inherently contains the sources of various notions and doctrines, which external objects merely rouse up... (Cowie, 1999, p. 7). Leibniz argued against Locke and other empiricists stated that ...there is no way ideas which come into the mind from outside can be formed into beliefs and judgments without the operation of specific internal mechanisms (Cowie, 1999, p. 17). At the same time, John Locke and his fellow philosophers campaigned for empiricism. Like Aristotle, the philosophers believed that humans thoughts and actions were determined not by innate factors, but by the their unique experiences (Ashcraft, 1998). Locke argued against the internalists by examining different human processes such as logic and reasoning. He would ask how it was possible to use logic and reasoning if people were born with all of the knowledge they would ever acquire (Cowie 1999, p. 19). The contrasting views of the two groups had begun the nature vs. nurture debate, which would linger in the fields of philosophy and psychology for decades. A point should be made that even though the interalists and empiricists felt strongly about their theories, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
