Introduction
• Antarctica is the fifth largest continent and covered
almost completely in ice.
• Antarctica is home to Penguins and seals
• It has the coldest land temerature recorded on the
Earth at -89.2 Digree C.
• This was recorded at ground level at the Soviet
Vostok station in Antarctica in 1983.
• The south pole is located in Antarctica. And north
pole located Arctic .
• The explorer, Roald Amundsen, was the first person
to reach the south pole in 1911.
• 98% of the land is covered with ice.
• Has about 87% of the world's ice.
Location
• The continent of Antarctica is located entirely
in the Southern Hemisphere, the continent is
surrounded by the southern most parts of the
pacific ocean , Atlantic ocean, and Indian
ocean. Two ice shelves, the Ross and Ronne
Climate
• Antarctica's average annual temperature
ranges from about −10°C on the coast to
−60°C at the highest parts of the interior.
Near the coast, the temperature can exceed
+10°C in summer and fall to below −40°C in
winter. Over the elevated inland, it can rise to
about −30°C in summer but fall below −80°C
in winter.
Why is it so cold and dry?
• Both the Arctic (North Pole) and the Antarctic
(South Pole) are very cold because they get
very little direct sunlight. The Sun is always
low on the horizon, even in the middle of
summer. In winter, the Sun is so far below the
horizon that it doesn't come up at all for
months at a time.
Division of Antarctica
• East Antarctica is also known as Greater
Antarctica.
• West Antarctica is also known as Lesser
Antarctica.
Ice, Sea and Lakes
• The Antarctica and Greenland ice sheets
contain more than 99 per cent of the
freshwater ice on Earth.
The Shelves of Antarctica
• Ross Ice Shelf
• Amery Ice Shelf
• Larsen Ice Shelf
• Ronne Ice Shelf
sea
• Ross sea
• Amundsen sea
• Bellingshausen
• Weddell sea
• Antarctica is home to sub-glacial lakes.there
are over 160 sub-glacial lakes.
• Lake Vostok is important lake in Antarctica.
Mountain Ranges
• Transantarctic Mountains
• Mount Erebus
• Vinson Massif(the highest point in Antarctica)
Life in Antarctica
• The people who travel to or live in Antarctica fall
into two main groups, those who live and work
on scientific research stations or bases, and
tourists. No-one lives in Antarctica indefinitely in
the way that they do in the rest of the world. It
has no commercial industries, no towns or cities,
no permanent residents. Due to this reason
,Antarctica is also Known as a Human void Zone.
