Anomie is a theory created by Émile Durkheim that proposes people feel alienated from society when they do not conform to social norms, which can lead to depression, suicide, or criminal behavior. Durkheim believed that a breakdown of shared values in society or a lack of purpose results in anomie, as excluded individuals do not feel bound by societal standards of behavior. He argued that modern societies have become more individualistic and organic, making it more difficult for people to find their place and understand the rules, resulting in greater anomie.
