The excretory system regulates water and salt balance and removes metabolic waste from the body. At the cellular level, waste diffuses out of cells. Multicellular organisms have specialized excretory organs to remove waste. The kidneys filter blood and regulate ion and water levels, producing concentrated urine. Aquatic animals also regulate salt levels to prevent too much or too little water from crossing their membranes. Terrestrial animals have developed ways to reduce water loss through their skin and produce concentrated urine.
