2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

• Name of the band
• The name of the album or song
• The venue if its an advert for a tour
• Eye catching images and text to get peoples attention
• Links to websites, phone numbers both to book tickets if the advert is
advertising the bands tour
• Reviews/feedback, things such as papers rating the album or band out of five
stars.

3. Album Cover One:
Typography:
The font size on the album cover is different for each piece of text although there is not an extremely wide range of text
sizes, the name of the artist whose album it is, is on the front cover and is also in a bigger font than any of the other
text. The reason for this is so that the artist is most important and stands out the most in the album. Also the name of
the album is also a bi font compared to the other text, this is has been used so that the audience immediately identify
the artist and the name of the album so it is appealing to them, this is also the effect of having the artists name on the
front cover and not the back.
The name of the songs that are on the album are conventionally on the back of the album cover as they are of least
importance, this has the effect that the audience do not notice the names of the sons on the album straight away, this
is conventional for a album cover because the audience do not need to see these straight away, it is important that the
artist and the name of the album are big and bold on the front so that it attracts the audience.
The style of font is stereotypical for the music genre of dance, the font style is Sans Serif, this is conventional because it
Is a plain but fun font that is very mature and suitable for the genre.
4. Image
The image that has been used in the album cover is a long wide shot off the main artist of the album, this shot has
been used to make the artist of most importance on the cover, this has the effect that as soon as they audience
look at the album they are going to recognise who the artist is which is a conventional element of an album cover.
The mise-en-scene that has been used in the album, such as the costume also has an effect on the audience and
also the album itself. The costume that has been used for the image is very fashionable and on trend style that
would appeal to the target audience, as the target audience are of a teenager and older age bracket they are
going to be attracted and interested in the album through the clothing, the audience may feel that they can relate
to the artist through having the same fashion style. The effect of using fashionable clothing in the image is that it
will appeal to the target audience and make it more fun for them.
The composition of the image that is used is very unique compared to any other album cover of this genre. The
artist is shown in an unusual position that creates the effect of making the album look un, exciting and also
different to any other album cover about by saying that it is unique and much better.
5. Colour
The main colour that has been used throughout the entire album cover is red and white, red is the main
colour that has been used for the background of the album, and white is for the text and title of the
album. The colour of red has been used because it is a very bright and bold colour that stands out to the
audience, it can be seen as a very happy colour which has the effect of connoting the audience as happy
and exciting to the target audience.
The colour red has been used as the main colour for the album cover because it connotes energy, this
means that through using red as the main colour it has the effect of representing the album as very
energetic and lively which is very stereotypical for the music genre. The colour of red has also been used
because it is the best colour to use for advertising, this is the best colour to use because it screams to
the audience to buy it now.
The colour of white has also been used on the album cover to make the tittle of the album and the
artist’s name bold and to make them stand out, these elements of texts are over the red background in
a big white text. This has the effect of making the names stand out so that the audience see and
recognise them straight away, the colour of white connotes perfection and high quality. This colour has
been used on the album cover to connote that it is perfection to the audience but also to make them
see that it is very high quality and perfectly made.
There is a contrast between the colours used on the front cover, this is with the artists costume and the
font of the artists name. the name has been placed straight through the image of the artist to represent
to the audience that they are linked, the costume of the artist is purposely black over the top of the red
background so that energy is still connoted but the artist is recognised as well.
6. Layout:
The layout of the album cover has used the route of the eye, this has been used so that the album title
and artist stand out and attract the audience. The route of the eye has been used because the title of
the album straight through the middle of the page, this has the effect of making the artist aware of the
name of the album as soon as they look at It. This instantly tells the audience who the artist is and what
the album is called.
Also the layout of the album cover connotes that it is very masculine and energetic, the way that the
title of the album is just plain straight through the middle of the page connotes that it is masculine
through it not being extremely creative and feminine, this is also represented through the style of font.
Through the use of Sans serif font it represents energy through the font style but also represents
masculinity through the non-creative sense.
7. Conventions:
The album cover has many typical conventional elements of a music album cover, one of
the conventions that is used is that is has the name of the band, the name of the band and
the artist are clearly stereotypically on the front of the album cover, this has he effect of
making it very clear to the audience who the artist and what the album is.
Another convention that is used is that it has eye catching colours and images, eye
catching colours have been used in the album cover to make it as bright and bold as
possible. The album cover needs to be bright and colourful so that it connotes the
stereotypical representation of it being energetic and fun.
8. Album Cover Two:
Typography:
The font size throughout the album cover varies in size, the font size of the text on the front cover of the album is
much larger and spaced out than the text the text. This has been used to show that the text on the front is most
important.
The overall theme of the font that is used is very modern, this represents to the audience that the album itself is a
very up-to-date and modern album. The way that the modern text has been used creates a good impression to the
audience, it will meet the wants of the target audience which means that more people will be interested.
Representing the album as being modern and up-to-date is very conventional to the music genre because this
represents that it is aimed at a younger target audience.
9. Image
The images that have been used are very plain throughout the album cover, this again creates the
representation that the album is aimed at a younger target audience.
In the image on the front cover of the album the main setting of the image is a plain background of
a brick wall, this has text written over it to tell the audience the name of the album and the artist.
The reason that the background of the image is a brick wall that is plain is so that the text of the
album and artist stand out and are of most importance on the cover, the text is written in bold
white text across to make it stand out.
The only image that is used on the album cover is a small image of the artist in the bottom right
corner of the text, the reason that the image is so small is so that the title of the album and the
artist are more important and are noticed more. Although the image is only small it will still be
noticed and will also make the title and artist of the album noticed more. The image will enable the
title to be noticed more because it is slightly through the text, people will read the text then notice
the picture.
10. Colour
The main colours that have been used throughout the album cover are white, browns and dark greys,
these are used on both the front and back of the album cover to show that they are linked together. If
the album covers where separate then the audience can clearly identify that they are linked through
the colour scheme.
The dark light brown and grey colours have been used for the background and main primary colours on
the album, then the white colours have been used for the texts on the album. This has been used to
make it stand out over the darker background which it does.
The colours that have been used throughout the album cover are all conventional colours fir the genre
of music, all of the colours are bright light colours that create a happy and fun feel to the album which
is conventional for the genre of the album.
11. Layout:
The layout of the album cover is very ordered, this
represents that the album is masculine and that the artist
is masculine, which is stereotypical for the genre of the
music.
On the front of the album cover the route of the eye has
been used, this has been used to make the most important
parts of the front cover noticed more.
The text on the front of the album cover has been
purposely centred so that it is clearly of most importance,
the text has been ordered in the centre so that it is clear
and stands out to the audience. The name of the artist has
been placed above the name of the album to make it more
important than the album name, this tells the audience
straight away who the artist is and then they will instantly
know the title of the album because they will recognise the
artists new album.
12. Conventions:
The album cover has many typical conventional elements of a music album cover, one of the conventions that is used
is that is has the name of the band, the name of the band and the artist are clearly stereotypically on the front of the
album cover, this has he effect of making it very clear to the audience who the artist and what the album is. The name
of the artist is in a larger font than the album name which also a convention of a music album, this represents that the
artist is more important than the album title because they are recognised more.
Another convention that is used is that it has eye catching colours and images, eye catching colours have been used in
the album cover to make it as bright and bold as possible. The album cover needs to be bright and colourful so that it
connotes the stereotypical representation of it being energetic and fun.
13. Magazine Advert One:
Typography:
The font size throughout the album cover varies in size, the font size of some of the text that is more important is in a much larger
and bigger font than the rest. For exampled with this magazine advert the title and name of the artist are in a bright yellow bold
font that is much more larger than any of the other fonts, for example the dates.
The overall theme of the font that is used is very modern, this represents to the audience that the album itself is a very up-to-
date and modern album. The way that the modern text has been used creates a good impression to the audience, it will meet the
wants of the target audience which means that more people will be interested. The overall text of the album is very conventional
for the genre because it uses a fun but modern text which is conventional for the genre.
Representing the album as being modern and up-to-date is very conventional to the music genre because this represents that it is
aimed at a younger target audience.
14. Image
For this magazine article there is only one image that is used throughout, this image is on the artist of whose
tour the magazine is advertising. The reason why there is only one image used on the entire magazine advert
is so that the audience notice who the main artist is, they want the audience to be attracted to the main
artist and not taken away to the other artists that are playing.
The overall lighting of the image is very low-key and dark lighting, this has been used to create the effect that
the audience will see the artist as miserable and quite mysterious, which could make the audience want to
the tour because they are not giving to much away.
15. Colour
The main colours that have been used throughout the magazine advert are black, yellow and red. These
colours are used as they are very energetic and music related colours. The colour of yellow and red are
very bright and happy colours which connotes fun and something energetic.
However the use of the colour black that has been used a large amount on the magazine advert is very
unconventional, the colour of black connotes something being miserable, dark and boring which this is
the opposite to the type of genre.
The colours of yellow and red however have been used over the black background to make it clear that
they are the most important pieces of texts that the audience need to see, they want to make them
stand out through being on a dark background which it successfully does.
16. Layout:
The layout of the album cover is very ordered, this represents that the album is masculine
and that the artist is masculine, which is stereotypical for the genre of the music.
One the advert for the music tour the texts and images are all ordered in a certain way. The
image of the main artist has been used at the very top of the advert and this has been done
purposely to make sure that this is the first thing that the audience notice, then from this
they will straight away recognise which artist is having the tour, which will then straight away
attract and interest the target audience.
The text of the featuring artist that are working with the main artist has been placed jus
under the image, this is so that if the audience are not interested in the main artist then the
could still interested through the featuring artist. Then below this in a bold colour centred in
the middle of the advert is the tour dates and venues, this is one of the most important
details on the advert so it has been centred to ensure that the audience notice it.
17. Conventions:
The magazine advert has many typical conventional elements, one of the conventions that is
used is that is has the name of the band, the name of the band and the artist are clearly
stereotypically on the front in a larger font than any of the tour dates, this has he effect of
making it very clear to the audience who the artist and that they are having a tour, however by
having the tour dates in a smaller font this is making the audience attracted to the poster
through the images and large fonts of the artists name, so thee will already want to o and will
have committed themselves to going before they have checked when or where the tour dates
are.
The name of the artist is in a larger font than the album name which also a convention of a
music album, this represents that the artist is more important than the dates and the featuring
artists because they are recognised more.
18. Magazine Advert Two:
The font size throughout the album cover varies in size again, the font size of
some of the text that is more important is in a much larger and bigger font
than the rest. For example with this magazine advert the title and name of the
artist are in a big and bold white front style that has been made bold to make
it stand out, this is much more larger than any of the other fonts, for example
the dates and tour venues.
The overall theme of the font that is used is very modern, a sans serif font has
been used in a small font that represents to the audience that the album itself
is a very up-to-date and modern album. The way that the modern text has
been used creates a good impression to the audience, it will meet the wants of
the target audience which means that more people will be interested. The
particular font that has been used for the artists names very conventional
because it is a very modern, fun and it’s a font that creates energy in the
advert which is very conventional for the genre.
The overall text of the album is very conventional for the genre because it uses
a fun but modern text which is conventional for the genre.
Typography:
19. Image
For this magazine article there is only one image that is used throughout, this image is on the artist of
whose tour the magazine is advertising which has been placed very large at the top of the advert. The
reason why there is only one image used on the advert is so that the audience notice who the main
artist is, they want the audience to be attracted to the main artist and not taken away to the other
artists that are playing.
The overall lighting of the image is very low-key and dark lighting, this has been used to create the
effect that the audience will see the artist as miserable and quite mysterious, which could make the
audience want to the tour because they are not giving to much away. However, the use of a light
looking up at the artist has also been used to create energy and represent to the audience that it is not
a dull and boring genre of music.
20. Colour
The main colours that have been used throughout the magazine advert are black, light
blue and white. These colours are used as they are very energetic and music related
colours. The colour of yellow and red are very bright and happy colours which connotes
fun and something energetic.
However the use of the colour black that has been used a large amount on the magazine
advert is very unconventional, the colour of black connotes something being miserable,
dark and boring which this is the opposite to the type of genre.
The colours of white and blue however have been used over the black background to make
it clear that they are the most important pieces of texts that the audience need to see,
they want to make them stand out through being on a dark background which with the use
of the lighting on the photo of the artist it successfully does.
21. Layout:
The layout of the album cover is very ordered, this represents that the album is masculine
and that the artist is masculine, which is stereotypical for the genre of the music.
The text on the front of the album cover has been purposely centred so that it is clearly of

is used is that is has the name of the band, the name of the artist are clearly
stereotypically on the front in a larger font than any of the tour dates, this has he effect of
making it very clear to the audience who the artist and that they are having a tour.
The tour dates on this magazine advert are represented in a smaller and also different
colour font to make it stand out and also make it look like it is important on the advert
The name of the artist is in a larger font than the tour dates and featuring artists which
also a convention of a advert because this represents that the artist is more important
than the dates and the featuring artists because they are recognised more and it is more
about them than the dates.
