The document discusses conventions for magazine advertisements of music albums. It analyzes advertisements for several albums, noting what elements are effective or could be improved. Key conventions mentioned include having the artist name largest, album title second largest, and listing popular songs. Elements like consistent fonts, inclusion of album artwork, and reviews are also discussed.
2. CONVENTIONS OF AN ALBUM
The advert should follow the same theme as the album.
The largest text should be the artist name, the second largest should be the
album title and the final largest text should be the “new album”.
The most popular songs will be listed in the “includes” section.
It’ll also include the web address, label name and possible where you can buy
it and if they’ve got any tour information.
3. KIDS IN GLASS HOUSES - PEACE
The album name is bigger then the
artist name. This is different to other
adverts as the artist name is usually
bigger. The colour is a pinky, red
colour which stands out on the
advert and catches the users eyes.
The artist name is in the same font
as the album name, this follows the
conventions of album adverts as
they are consistent.
The writing is black and is also bold
on the page.
The artwork found on the advert is
the same as the album artwork. This
makes the advert consistent as it
follows on what the album is like.
The artwork used it also very colour
and stands out on the page.
All the writing below which includes
where you can buy it, the types you
can buy and what is includes all
descend in size of important.
They’re also in black and one part is
in red to point out “it’s a new
album”.
The link sends the fans to find out
more about the band.
4. KIDS IN GLASS HOUSES - PEACE
I like the fact that the advert is bright and includes a small element of the
album on it with the artwork. I also like the colour scheme used as it just shows
what that band it like.
What I don’t like about this advert is the fact that the album title is bigger then
the artist title. This isn’t following the conventions and certain people may
believe that is the artist title when it’s the album name.
The elements I would/wouldn’t use in my advert is I wouldn’t have the album
name bigger then the artist and I would use the album artwork in the advert to
show who the album belongs too.
5. PEARL JAM – LIGHTNING BOLT
The artist name is in a bold white
colour to stand out on the black
background. The font is consistent
throughout the whole advert. Its
placed in the middle of the advert
so it’s the centre of attention.
The artwork used in the advert is the
same artwork which is used on the
album. This shows the consistency
from the album to the advert. This
also means people may remember
the artwork better so they’ll find it in
store easier.
The album title is in a small version of
the main artist name. It is spaced
out below the artist title so it starts
and ends in the same place. The
colouring of the font is red which
also stands out on the black
background and also matches the
album artwork.
The other writing on the page
descends in size and has the same
colour scheme as the rest of the
advert. It also includes how it
features certain singles.
The website is included for further
information on the band.
6. PEARL JAM – LIGHTNING BOLT
I like the fact the album artwork is largely presented along the top of the
magazine. This leaps out to the audience because it’s a large piece of artwork
along the top. I also like the colour scheme follows the artwork colours which
are Red and White. I also like the boldness of the album name and font title.
There is nothing negative about this advert.
For my album I would use the idea of the artwork being bold on the page,
possibly going from one side of the page to the other. I would also like the
idea of using similar colours to in the artwork and making the album and font
stand out along with the album artwork.
7. WE ARE THE IN CROWD – WEIRD KIDS
The top of the page has a photo of
the band. This gives the readers a
view into who made the album. The
photo shoot that, that photo was
taken will have the same photo
shoot, shots in the album itself.
The artist title is in the middle just
below the band photo. This
introduces the band. The font use
has a youth feel as they’re a young
band. The white stands out on the
background apart from the “O”
which blends in slightly with the
female artists top.
There are album reviews by
different magazines giving their
opinions on the album. This allows
the reader to read about the album
and see how good or bad it is.
This gives the viewer a sight of what
the front of the album looks like. This
doesn’t stand out as much as the
band photo along the top. The
album font is the same as the artist
font which shows the consistency.
The small writing matches the album reviews while the “Out Now”
matches the artist name. It also includes the production
company's logo and a location where you can buy it.
8. WE ARE THE IN CROWD – WEIRD KIDS
I like the fact the font explains the type of band they’re, how they’re a rather
young band and the font explains that. I also like the ideas of the reviews
along the side from the different magazines.
The things I don’t like are the fact the album artwork and name isn’t clear and
doesn’t stand out on the advert. I also don’t like the way the band are along
the top, this takes the users eyes off the advert and straight onto the band
image at the top.
In my advert I would use the idea of having reviews from other magazines and
use a font to explain the album off a bit better. I would avoid having a band
photo on their as I believe this takes the users eye away from what they’re
advertising which is the album and puts it on the band photo.
9. GLAMOUR OF THE KILL - SAVAGES
The artist name spans the top of the
advert page. This titles the page
with the artist name. The font
matches the font used on the
album which adds consistency. The
font they’ve used also shows how
the band is rather heavy. The black
colour stands out on the grey/white
background.
The album artwork is bang in the
middle. This adds the attention to
the album to see what it looks like. It
also stands out on the background
meaning people will notice is easier.
The album title is in the same font as
used on the album just in black
rather then white. This stands out on
the background and stays
consistent throughout the advert to
album.
The smaller writing below is in simple
writing so it don’t overpower the
main titles. This tells you what types
you can get it on and allows you to
find out about them on facebook.
10. GLAMOUR OF THE KILL - SAVAGES
I like how the title is across the top standing out on the page. It also has the
album in the middle showing what is looks like rather then just the artwork. The
font consistency is also good as it matches the album font. I also like how it
explains the different forms of album you can get it in eg: limited edition (500
copies). There was no negative elements I found.
In my album advert I like the idea of having the formats it is available in and
also how the artist and album name are in the same font as seen on the
album.
11. PANIC! AT THE DISCO – PRETTY ODD
The artist name is titled along the
top and is in a wacky colour and
font design. This shows how the
band are which is wacky and
colourful. The artist name stands out
on the advert as it seems 3D on the
page.
The background is set around the
album artwork. This links the advert
to how the album was made and
the design they used. This allows the
readers to see the consistency from
the album to the advert.
The album is used in the advert in
the middle. This adds the album
feel to the advert as its all over the
page about the album.
The smaller font is in a white to
stand out on the plum
background. It also explains the
new songs and where the album is
available to order.
12. PANIC! AT THE DISCO – PRETTY ODD
I like how the background isn’t just plain it links in with what the album is and
how the design all links together. I also like how the font is so wacky and shows
how the band really are. I can find nothing negative about this album advert.
I would use a font which explains what the band are like and how the album is
represented. I would also use a background to link with the album.
