Analysis of Audience Questionnaire
The largest majority of our audience prefer crime films which is closely followed by Thriller
and Other genres, this indicates that by making a crime film we are roughly on the correct
track for the ideal genre of the film for the audience that the film is aimed for.
When asked how much they knew about Noir films, only around 30% of people asked knew
what one was, of these people, most of them had a relatively good idea of what the genre
meant, both in terms of the way they looked and the general types of plotlines that could
unfold within one.
Furthermore, when asked what Noir films we could take inspiration from, those people that
did cited such films as “Citizen Kane”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Sin City”. Though the majority of
people were completely unable to name any noir films whatsoever.
One of the more interesting sections was the impact that budget of a film has over an
audiences choice of watching, to my surprise the majority of people said that size of the
budget had no influence over whether they would choose to watch a film and the minority
said it had an impact, this surprised me due to the huge amount of our target audience (15-
25) that choose to watch large budget films (such as superhero films) and how few go into
smaller independent cinema and watch indie films.
With regards to the gender of the protagonist/ antihero, most people did not seem to mind
the idea of a female lead, however it is unlikely that we will choose to follow this up as in my
opinion, even though the audience would be okay with a woman, to go with a male
protagonist and stay true to the Noir film roots and have a role of a femme fatale cast
instead, again in order to stick to the film noir conventions.
The largest majority of audiences believe that the most important aspects of a films trailers
are the presence of high profile acting talent and the use of a pleasing visual style and action
set pieces. The use of the score within the trailer, to me, seemed to be somewhat under
represented within the poll as in my opinion it is one of the most important aspects with
editing receiving a much higher score. (The other result was a combination of all of the
above).
In the question about the best method to advertise the trailer to 15-25 year olds, as I
expected, the most popular outcome was to advertise the page on social media platforms,
most commonly on Facebook and Twitter or event Instagram. With the least voted for
option being for me to, by hand, give out the link to the webpage. Social media seems like
the most efficient and cost effective method of getting the webpage and thus the trailer
into the hand of our target audience.
Staying on the topic of the films webpage, when asked, people said that the main focus of
the webpage should be on images, this went against my expectation and research into film
webpages, I expected the most popular to be trailers themselves as this was the most
prominent feature of pages I had looked at, with only a small section being devoted to an
image gallery, the rest of the resulted followed a trend that I expected them too with the
least votes going to plot and cast list. With most of the “Other” category stating a
combination of all of them, or unimportant opinions.
Another question that surprised me in its answer was about the presence of high profile
actors on the poster, I expected that the overwhelming majority would vote in favour of
them having an effect, but in actual fact the results were far closer together. This, as indie
filmmakers, is far better (thanks to the near impossibility of hiring a professional actor)
meaning that we can have the given actor on the poster, without the fear of them having an
impact on the audience.
And finally a questions who’s answer did not strike me as unusual was about the viewership
of film webpages, most people in the age range of 15-25 years old (and limited numbers
still, even outside that range) would not be so invested in a film that they choose to go onto
its website, before even watching the film itself, most AAA films won’t even have an
individual website for the film, instead just occupying a small space on the production
companies webpage.

Analysis of audience questionnaire

  • 1. Analysis of Audience Questionnaire The largest majority of our audience prefer crime films which is closely followed by Thriller and Other genres, this indicates that by making a crime film we are roughly on the correct track for the ideal genre of the film for the audience that the film is aimed for. When asked how much they knew about Noir films, only around 30% of people asked knew what one was, of these people, most of them had a relatively good idea of what the genre meant, both in terms of the way they looked and the general types of plotlines that could unfold within one. Furthermore, when asked what Noir films we could take inspiration from, those people that did cited such films as “Citizen Kane”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Sin City”. Though the majority of people were completely unable to name any noir films whatsoever.
  • 2. One of the more interesting sections was the impact that budget of a film has over an audiences choice of watching, to my surprise the majority of people said that size of the budget had no influence over whether they would choose to watch a film and the minority said it had an impact, this surprised me due to the huge amount of our target audience (15- 25) that choose to watch large budget films (such as superhero films) and how few go into smaller independent cinema and watch indie films. With regards to the gender of the protagonist/ antihero, most people did not seem to mind the idea of a female lead, however it is unlikely that we will choose to follow this up as in my opinion, even though the audience would be okay with a woman, to go with a male protagonist and stay true to the Noir film roots and have a role of a femme fatale cast instead, again in order to stick to the film noir conventions.
  • 3. The largest majority of audiences believe that the most important aspects of a films trailers are the presence of high profile acting talent and the use of a pleasing visual style and action set pieces. The use of the score within the trailer, to me, seemed to be somewhat under represented within the poll as in my opinion it is one of the most important aspects with editing receiving a much higher score. (The other result was a combination of all of the above). In the question about the best method to advertise the trailer to 15-25 year olds, as I expected, the most popular outcome was to advertise the page on social media platforms, most commonly on Facebook and Twitter or event Instagram. With the least voted for option being for me to, by hand, give out the link to the webpage. Social media seems like the most efficient and cost effective method of getting the webpage and thus the trailer into the hand of our target audience.
  • 4. Staying on the topic of the films webpage, when asked, people said that the main focus of the webpage should be on images, this went against my expectation and research into film webpages, I expected the most popular to be trailers themselves as this was the most prominent feature of pages I had looked at, with only a small section being devoted to an image gallery, the rest of the resulted followed a trend that I expected them too with the least votes going to plot and cast list. With most of the “Other” category stating a combination of all of them, or unimportant opinions. Another question that surprised me in its answer was about the presence of high profile actors on the poster, I expected that the overwhelming majority would vote in favour of them having an effect, but in actual fact the results were far closer together. This, as indie filmmakers, is far better (thanks to the near impossibility of hiring a professional actor) meaning that we can have the given actor on the poster, without the fear of them having an impact on the audience. And finally a questions who’s answer did not strike me as unusual was about the viewership of film webpages, most people in the age range of 15-25 years old (and limited numbers still, even outside that range) would not be so invested in a film that they choose to go onto its website, before even watching the film itself, most AAA films won’t even have an individual website for the film, instead just occupying a small space on the production companies webpage.
