BFI EXIT POLL
BFI exit poll “Ill manors”
Here is an exit poll from the movie “Ill manors”
this poll includes various statistics including the
percentage of gender of the viewers asked, their
age, sources of information about the film and
finally what attracted the audience to see the film.
The information in these exit polls are useful to
film directors and they can easily and accurately
assess the type of audiences that favour specific
genres of films, allowing them to easily gain great
knowledge of their target audience.
Here we can see the first section of the exit poll for “Ill manors” This first section
includes the gender and age of the audience and the total number of people
questioned that will make up these percentages.
We can see immediately that the majority of the audience for this particular poll
were male with 56%. Ill manors is based one true story and features strong
violence, language and drug abuse. These topics stereotypically aren't favoured
by female viewers which is supported by the exit poll. This shows to anyone
attempting to make a film such as this that the majority of their target audience
will be men, giving them an understanding of how to effectively market the film.
We can also see that the majority of the people who saw this film were under the
age of 25. This is because the film focuses on youthful characters growing up in
London. Thus it would appeal more to a younger audience as they can connect to
the subject material more easily.
As shown here we can see that the
trailers for the film and other
televised advertisement had a
large impact on informing the
audience of the film as would be
expected as often the trailers have
large significance in attracting an
audience. However the trailer and
Tv advertisements were not the
most effective method of
promoting the film. Surprisingly
family and friends was shown to be
the largest source of information to
the audience. This isn't to be
expected as usually the trailer is
the most significant source of
information on a film as that is its
main goal
The narrative of the film was shown to
be the main attraction for audience
members, illustrating that real life
crime dramas are a large attraction to
an audience.
However the writer and director, Ben
Drew (Plan B) was also a large
attraction for the audience. The
director does not always have such a
significant roll in attracting an
audience as this example as Ben
Drew is a famous musician and the
film is based on his experience. This
means a large percentage of the
audience may only be attending as
they are fans of Plan B, this is not the
case for every directors film however.
The trailer for this film held a
significantly lower place on the poll
then expected with only 21% noting it
as an influence on them. This may
indicate that the trailer was not
effectively produced.
Exit poll “We need to talk about
Kevin”
Here we can see the exit poll for the film “We
need to talk about Kevin” again this poll
includes statistics like the percentage of
gender of the viewers, their age, sources of
information about the film and what attracted
the audience to see the film.
Here we can see the first section of the exit poll for “Ill manors”
This first section includes the gender and age of the audience
and the total number of people questioned that make up these
percentages.
As we can see from the poll the majority of people who went to
see this film were women, although the ration of men to
women is closer than most films. This is because drama thriller
films tend to attract both genders.
The age of the majority of the audience viewing this film were
under 35, this is because drama thriller films tend to attract a
mature audience like adults.
As show above, the main source of information for the film was the trailer,
this is expected as this is generally the primary reason for a trailer. This
shows that the trailer for this film was effective in its task of attracting the
attention of potential audiences.
The internet also had a big part in informing the audience about the film, this
illustrates the changing dynamics of society’s consumption of media as
various new platforms such as the internet continue to impact and increase
the accessibility of content.
The film being based on a successful novel
had a massive impact in attracting an
audience as fans of the novel would likely
see the movie adaptation. Again the
narrative of the film also attracted a large
percentage of the audience like with “Ill
manors”
The trailer also had a large impact in
attracting viewers to the film with 27%.
However it had a lower impact than what
we would expect it to be as again the aim
of a trailer is to attract an audience.
Although it was successful in attracting a
large percentage of the audience there
were various other reasons that attracted
more people than the trailer. This
potentially illustrates that this films trailer
wasn’t successfully produced.

As shown here we can see that the trailers for the film and other televised advertisement had a large impact on informing the audience of the film as would be expected as often the trailers have large significance in attracting an audience. However the trailer and Tv advertisements were not the most effective method of promoting the film. Surprisingly family and friends was shown to be the largest source of information to the audience. This isn't to be expected as usually the trailer is the most significant source of information on a film as that is its main goal
  • 5. The narrative of the film was shown to be the main attraction for audience members, illustrating that real life crime dramas are a large attraction to an audience. However the writer and director, Ben Drew (Plan B) was also a large attraction for the audience. The director does not always have such a significant roll in attracting an audience as this example as Ben Drew is a famous musician and the film is based on his experience. This means a large percentage of the audience may only be attending as they are fans of Plan B, this is not the case for every directors film however. The trailer for this film held a significantly lower place on the poll then expected with only 21% noting it as an influence on them. This may indicate that the trailer was not effectively produced.

As we can see from the poll the majority of people who went to see this film were women, although the ration of men to women is closer than most films. This is because drama thriller films tend to attract both genders. The age of the majority of the audience viewing this film were under 35, this is because drama thriller films tend to attract a mature audience like adults.

This shows that the trailer for this film was effective in its task of attracting the attention of potential audiences. The internet also had a big part in informing the audience about the film, this illustrates the changing dynamics of society’s consumption of media as various new platforms such as the internet continue to impact and increase the accessibility of content.
  • 9. The film being based on a successful novel had a massive impact in attracting an audience as fans of the novel would likely see the movie adaptation. Again the narrative of the film also attracted a large percentage of the audience like with “Ill manors” The trailer also had a large impact in attracting viewers to the film with 27%. However it had a lower impact than what we would expect it to be as again the aim of a trailer is to attract an audience. Although it was successful in attracting a large percentage of the audience there were various other reasons that attracted more people than the trailer. This potentially illustrates that this films trailer wasn’t successfully produced.
