Horror Movie Survey
Nishat Simi Khan & Sharmila Aktar
We sent our survey out to 28 people – 13 males and 15
females to see what it is that our audiences would like
in horror films, which will help us decide what are the
most important factors to consider whilst making our
own.
This is what we found out.
Age
• Most of our audience is within
the 15-18 range. This is ideal as
our initial target audience was
actually also between the 15-18
marking as we feel we will be
able to appeal to them more.
• 78% of our target audience is
between this range therefore
giving us a more accurate
collection of results.
Genre of horror films
• Although we know what genre our
horror film is, we wanted to ensure
that it is also what the public want
without influencing their decisions
by telling them our genre.
• To our advantage, 25% chose
psychological (our sub genre), with
comedy close by at 21% and thriller
at 17%.
If you could create your own horror movie,
which two sub genres would you choose?
• As producers of a horror film, we
thought it would be interesting to see
what two sub genres our audience
would choose it were all up to them.
• We found out that Action was chosen by
8 people, psychological – 12, Zombie –
2, Slasher – 4, Comedy – 6, Thriller – 12,
Gothic – 3, and Supernatural – 3.
• We now know that Psychological and
Thriller alongside Comedy are the main
favourites of our target audience.
What element scares you the most?
• One of the main aspects of a horror film are
what makes the audience frightened the
most therefore this question was the most
fundamental part of the questionnaire.
• The results show that sound and music was
the most significant part as 71% (20 people)
had chosen this. The second most important
is darkness (11) and thirdly is Settings with
(9).
• This therefore shows us what aspects we
need to consider more whilst creating our
film.
Which sort of character do you like the most in a
horror film?
• From this question, it was
quite evident that the
most favourite character
was in fact a villain of
some sort.
• Many had chosen the
murderer as a favourite
character showing that
they want an evil character
included in the film.
Biggest fear
• In order to corporate psychological fear into
our film, it was important that we found out
what our audience were most scared of.
• Although there is a large variety of answers,
many are to do with spiders,
ghosts/supernatural as well as the dark or
small spaces. Others are more motivational
things like religion or life goals.
• This hints to us what we should include in
our film for example, the dark.
Do you prefer olden horror films or more modern
ones?
• To help create a film that appeals to
our audience, we had to find out
which type of film interests them
more.
• The results show that the ‘new’
modern films are more preferred
for example, The Conjuring.
Does a horror film scare you more if it's based
on real life events?
•This immediately tells us
that horror films do in
fact scare people a lot
more if it is based on a
true story.
What is the best/worst horror film you have
watched?
• To compare our own film and
ideas, we wanted to find out
which films our target audience
liked the most, and the ones they
didn’t.
• Most of the films which appealed
to them were modernised
psychological films whereas the
ones they disliked were horror
comedy like Scary Movie 2.
