2. Which gender do you identify with?
Male Female Other
What is your age?
Under 18 18 - 29 30 - 44 45 - 59 60+
The fact that there are more females
compared to other genders that did my
audience survey, puts me at an advantage as
I was thinking of making a trailer that was
more for females than other genders.
However, as there is also a big percentage of
males, it has made me decide that I will try to
make my trailer so that men would also enjoy
it.
My idea for audience is teens to late
twenties so the range of answers I
received is quite close to my vision as I got
answers from mostly teens and young
adults. When it comes to movies, it is
normally the younger audiences that are
more interested in them anyway, so I’m
not surprised or disappointed that people
age 45 and above didn’t take my survey.
3. What is your favourite film
genre?
Drama Action Romance Adventure
Horror Animated comedy Sci-fi
Musical War Thriller
What film certificate do you usually
watch?
U PG 12 12A 15 18
From my survey, it is evident that action is the most
popular genre and comedy is the second most popular.
This puts me as a disadvantage as I was wanting my trailer
to be drama/thriller. However, it may be easy to add some
forms of action and some forms but adding comedy may
be harder (although can be do-able)
Luckily, the most popular film certificate from my survey is “15” which is
what I wanted it to be. For my target audience, this is also the perfect
certificate as the lower end of my target audience is 15. On the down
side, 64.29% of people do normally watch movies U, PG, 12 & 12A which
may mean that they may not be interested in the graphics and language
of 15 movies. This puts me in a situation where I have to think about how
to keep the movie 15 but also appeal to people who prefer other age
certificates .
4. Do you watch trailers before you
watch the film?
yes no
How often do film trailers influence
you to watch a movie?
Always Sometimes Never I don't watch film trailers
The whole purpose of trailers is to inform an
audience that a film is coming out and to try to
encourage them and get them in to wanting to
watch the movie so it is a very good thing that a
huge percentage of people do watch trailers
before they watch a film.
As “sometimes” was the most popular option and “always”
the second most popular option, for the survey question, it
can be suggested that very intriguing trailer would be
needed to get more people to want to watch a movie.
5. What platform do you watch trailers on?
Youtube Social network IMBD Film website Cinema TV
Which colours do you like to see
in trailers?
White Black Brown Blue
Red Purple Grey Pink
Green Yellow Orange
As the most popular option to watch
movie trailers on is YouTube, I will
release my trailer on the app, just to
get more recognition world wide.
However, I will also release my trailer
on social media like Instagram just to
have a wide variety of audiences.
Red, black, white and blue were the most
favourited colours out of all the options. With
research I’ve done, looking at other successful
trailers, these colours are also very popular
within them which puts things in to perspective
for me about what kind of colours appeal to a
wider audience.
6. Features of a trailer that most appeals
to you?
Genre Colour scheme Cast
Director of the film Tag line Music
Setting Other
What do you think is most effective in
a film trailer?
Lighting Sound Setting Props
Costume Camera work Editing
As the genre of a trailer and the music is what
most appeals to the audience, I will be sure to
make sure the music is appropriate for my
trailer and goes well with the story line. My
trailer will also consist of more than one genre
to appeal to a wider audience (maybe 2 or 3).
Sound and lighting were chosen to be
the most effective in film trailers. This
puts things in to perspective for me as
I will think more about how the sound
works/should work with my trailer and
what type of lighting is most
appropriate for certain scenes.
