This advertisement promotes Mariah Carey's 2008 album "E=MC2" through the use of a glamorous black and white image of Mariah Carey posing nude in fur. It aims to attract male audiences through sexual imagery while also portraying Mariah's confident and diva persona. Additional elements like uppercase font, excitement-building adjectives, and a music magazine endorsement are intended to convince audiences to purchase the album. The feminine color scheme and inclusion of Mariah's website further promote her image and music.
2. This album advertisement for Mariah ‘s album E=MC2 released in 2008 by island
records subsidiary Def Jam has chosen to keep it extremely simple and straight to
the point whilst being very glamorous and focused on the artist .
The key image is of the artist Mariah Carey in nude holding a strip of white fur
over her, this attracts the male audience by using sexual images, as the male
audiences are not the keenest to buy an album full of high noted pop songs – after
all they do say ‘sex sells’. The pose and outfit choice also reflects Mariah’s
confident and diva attitude that is reflected in her songs; the image is in black and
white which connotes a sense of class and sophistication and as they have used a
long shot of her whole body within this advertisement it is shown through her
slick and slim body figure ; which is also used as something she is proud of and
something girls inspire to be like. They have also chosen to use a low angled shot
of the artist helping to present her as a women of power, strength and poise ,
something Mariah has achieved to be and says in shown within the album of
E=MC2 . The uppercase font she has used throughout the advertisement connotes
a very confident and strong sound that her album will bring, this will entice
audiences to buy the album as it has a very hard sell approach to it and with
convincing adjectives like ‘HOT’ and ‘NEW’ that build up the excitement for the
album your left wanting to hear what its all about. She also has chosen to include
a 5 star rating of her album from Heat magazine, a magazine that her fans are
more likely to read – this not only will seal approval of a great album from them
but attract a new set of potential fans as it has been rated very high by a
established branded magazine. The pink and purple colour scheme is very
feminine which again helps to tie in Mariah’s love for all things girly, it shows a
softer side of Mariah’s hard working life. Lastly the advert includes Mariah’s
website address and label logo; this is all to promote the artist herself – a network
where fans could get closer to her life and music and even buy some of her
merchandise sold on her website.
3. Madonna’s Celebration is an album to celebrate the
music of an idol – including both CD’s and DVD’s filled
with her ultimate hits which are listed in the
advertisement encouraging audiences to go out and pick
up a copy of hits that they know. This advertisement was
all about the celebration of an iconic movement of sound
which was helped by the art technique of pop art – which
was a method of art to help express your ideas in an
abstract way – which in this case Madonna wanting to
show the world that’s she proud of her musical career by
just having fun, loud and controversial. The key image of
Madonna is a close up on her face and her hair which
almost looks similar to the queens this could help reflect
the establishment and legendry status she has now
received and is respected for which again helps to tie in
the ‘celebration’ theme of this advert; it almost like when
the queen celebrates her years in reign.
The font used in this advertisement is all upper case, with
the main information highlighted by blocks of colour as a
background, this reflects the vibrant, courageous attitude
of the artist and sound of her music – which would help
attract the eyes of audiences. Overall I like this album
advertisement as its very clear and effective whilst being
extremely eye catching and reflective of Madonna's
sound.
4. Basement Jaxx is famously known for their party going
music through the genre of UK House. Their second
album ‘Rooty’ was released in 2001 which help boost
their unique sound of music to the musical world.
The key image is of a gorilla famously known as
snowflake, which the band has chosen to act as a unique
selling point - the gorilla is something audiences will
remember and easily indentify the band with, this is a
promotional method that not only will help boost sales
but built the bands reputation. The fact the gorilla is
eating a leaf, representing nature, suggest that although
the band has a individual sound – it still ‘relies’ on
stronger genres like soul and funk.
The font chosen for the album cover is the same font as
the bands logo which again helps to link the both
together. Furthermore the font is very sharp and almost
helps to give the advertisement a club leaflet look to it
which reflects the bands retro sound. The vivid strong
colours also helps to build an image of nightlife, lights
and confidently dressed people who would listen to their
type of music. The star filled sky that plays as a
background for the gorilla again helps to show reflect a
sound that is not normal / out of this world which
encourages audiences to pick up the album and listen to
a new sound, the bright pink splash that almost imitates
paint could help to tie in all features in this
advertisement whilst reinforcing the fun in the bands
electronic sound. Lastly it still includes key information
like the release date, band website and even their next
appearance/ live show – helping their fans to keep
connected.
5. Marina and the diamonds album ‘The Family jewels’
released recently in 2010 is an album the band hopes
to take the word with; featuring some chart loving
songs like Hollywood and OH NO! which is mentioned
on the advertisement to allow audiences to indentify
and recognise with the songs in hoping that they will
get the whole album and become part of their fan base
as a newly emerged band. There retro sound is
represented through the background of floral patterns
usually associated with the more mature audiences,
can help to widen there audience into a more older
generation as the background together with the
scripted handwritten font helps to gives a more
personalised approach , Which could appeal to a wider
audience, something the band would be trying to aim
for as a new act on the market. The image of marinas
attractive face with simplistic make up helps to reflect
there simply catchy music and could connote that she
prefers to stay her self - being a role model for the
younger girls. This advertisement also included an
image of the bands new single artwork and name -
which is very clever as now it promotes both their
album and new single. The single new also shows a
clear relation with the main album through the font
style and innocent pink colour helps to separate the
differences. Cleverly they show that its now on iTunes
allowing audiences with convergence technologies to
instantly download the music there and then!
