2. Conventions of pop album covers
Artists wear fashionable
clothing, lots of make-up
and hair done to show
their feminine side
Artists are seen as happy
or posing to show their
body
Lyrics are based on love
and relationships:
highlights the femininity
Bands show power of
their gender, and
rebellious side of life.
Things like party, social
life and landscapes (sun
set) is shown to show
good times
Themed with bright and
bold colours to target
their young audience
Bands normally portray
friendships and love for
one another
Short dresses, shorts,
body is shown to appeal
to teenagers
3. Conventions of hip-hop/rap albums
Include close up on the
rapper, low angle tilt
upwards to show their
power
Include women next to
them, to show that they
can get any girl
Wear chains, fashionable
sports clothing, to
highlight wealth
Include, cars, helicopters
locations to show how
they are living life
Shirtless to show off
their body that they
worked hard on
Look away from camera,
pose away to show that
they are not bothered by
anything but fame
Rap about their harsh
upbringing and
breakups./ gang and
near death experineces
Rap about women which
objectifies them, sex and
money which they want
Wear glasses, golden
grills in teeth, and have
Champaign bottles on
floor
4. Conventions of indie albums
Normally in bands, quite
artsy covers with lots of
detail in them
Members know how to
play an instrument and
are associated with it
Slower tempo songs,
have quite dull voices
Old school clothing,
fashionable but darker
coloured themed
clothing
Setting of flowers, fields,
forests, stages are on
covers of albums
Simple colour scheme,
name of band in bold
with their own font to
stand out
Sing about pain,
breakups, hard times,
being rebellious, about
girls they like
Quite dreamy album
covers, about the sky, or
edited album covers
with mascots
More instrumental than
singing, the purpose is
to appeal to rebellious
teenagers
5. Different genres target different audiences
With such statement above and research on the previous pages I fully agree that
different genres of music target their audiences in different ways.
Pop genre targets their young teenage audience through bright colours, upbeat
songs, through love and friendship. This allows them to target youths who are
more into electronic music rather than acoustic ones
Rap genre targets their audience though use of costume and props, cars, chains,
girls which target ages 17+ because they would want those things. They have more
of a steady beat with a powerful rap. They target audience through the rapper on
the front cover which makes the album recognisable by.
Indie genre target their audience though simplicity. They don’t include lots of
colours and text but focus on the name of album and name of band. They target
18+ ages who listen to more slower and meaningful songs .
6. Retailers and their placement of music magazines
As we can see music magazines
are set at the back of the shelf
(NME) where it meets the eye of a
customer which gets them to buy
and notice the magazine. Rolling
stones a known music magazine is
at the front which also catches
audiences eye as we can see the
name and the image in contrast to
Nme which we can only spot the
name
Online retailers such as WH Smith sell
magazine subscriptions which have
their prices for a yearly subscription,
they have a wide variety to choose
from. NME to Rolling stones are
accessible to the audiences who like
to read music magazines
8. The border of the whole image is black, which creates the
focus on the polaroid's in the middle of the advert which
makes the audience notice the band members who are In the
middle. The black border contrasts with the images in the
middle which creates an effect of the images floating due to
the black background.
The editing of the colour gradient is a creamy white colour
which is due to the saturation of the polaroid's being
increased. This contrasts the black border which the poster
consists of. The brighter coloured polaroid's stand out the the
audience as its brighter than the rest of the poster. The border
forces the audience on what is in the middle of the picture
which will make them focus on the band members.
The font style used is more ‘Shop sign style’
where its quite old fashioned and formal
which gives a classical vibe of what genre
their songs could be about. The use of
polaroid's instead of pictures give a retro
effect which can reflect what the band sing
about which could be old times. Additionally
the placement of the polaroid's are in the
center of the advert which makes the
audience focus on the images first such used
of rule of thirds allowed them to effectively
place the picture in the middle of the advert
to catch the eye of their audience. The
polaroid's have edges which resemble a scrap
book which can give a vibe of old school
songs with slower pace.
The white and black colours contrast each other which
makes artist & album name stand out. The band name
placement is at the top of the screen which catches the
audiences eye due to it being at the top as we read from
top to bottom so they will see the band name and associate
with the pictures which follow
The mise en scene use of props such as their
instruments is imposed into the images on
who plays them. The instrument is paired with
the person. For the audience this allows them
to identify who sings and who creates what
part of song. Such use of props allows the
audience to recognize and associate the
person with the instrument. The instruments
are quite melodic in a sense that they are
calm instruments such as a acoustic guitar,
accordion, keyboard and bass/cello which are
quite old fashioned instruments viewed from
a demographic which are used to EDM, and
grime which don’t involve these.
The setting used which is part of mise en scene is fields. Such
images are creating an effect of peace and brightness which is
contrasted with the dark border which give an effect of the
setting being bright and tranquil. The setting reflects their
peaceful music which could be just melodic to match the
images of a wheat field.
Another aspect of mise en scene is lighting. The use of dim
lighting creates an effect of the images being taken in the
sunset which for the audience creates a peaceful image of a
sunset which is normally beautiful which can give an
impression of them doing calm melodic songs.
The bottom of the advert
includes a review from NME
(music magazine) this means
that it’s a creditable source
which the audience would
trust if they read/ know the
magazine which will get the
audience to listen to the
song. Their review can
influence others to listen to
them due to them saying its
an ‘spectacular band’
The advert includes the bands other songs from the
album they are trying to promote which can attract
listeners who may know one of the songs to listen
to the other ones as well. Such marketing strategy
used can attract the audience to buy the album and
listen to the other songs they might not heard of.
The band name additionally is bigger than the album title and
in capital letters which shows that the band name is more
important and they will be recognized by their name rather
than the album name.
Institutional logos,
included in small because
they are not the central
point of advert. record
labels mentioned to
advertise them
Images are layered on top
of each other this was done
in the editing which gives
vibe of fun and good
memories.
10. Camera shot used is a close
up which takes over the
whole page, this was used to
emphasize her solo career as
a singer. Rule of thirds is
used effectively as she’s in
the 2/3 of the placement.
This allows us to focus on
her and her image which she
has created.
A part of mise en scene
which is used is her body
language, she is seen as a
strong woman who is
independent enough to sing
solo. She’s looking directly at
the audience which could
give an effect of her trying to
communicate something.
Such connection to the
audience can reflect the
genre of her album which
could be dark and
depressing due to the direct
look into the camera
Another part of mise en scene is costume. The clothing of her is black which is reflected as the primary colours in the advert, the black colours
contrast with her skin which is pale white. Such use of colours for the costume can also reflect her genre of songs which could be deep and
emotional songs about pain and suffering. As black is connoted with goth and darkness which reflects to emotions of pain.
An aspect of mise en scene
The artists facial expression
can reflect her emotions,
her mouth is opened
showing some tongue, this
could reflect her rebellious
stage of her life showing
how she’s not the
conventional pop star, she’s
different and something
more.
Mise en scene also includes
make up, Jessie js makeup
stands out, due to it being to
black and bold, she’s
highlighting her rebellious
side by having so much on ,
her lip stick is black with
some gold which can reflect
her being different and
rebellious as gold is seen as
pure and black is seen quire
dull by mixing them together
she’s rebelling.
Font used is swirly and
bold, such font highlights
her importance as its
different to the rest of the
credits, her font is in Gold
showing her rapper side and
ghetto side which contrasts
her goth side shown through
the use of black colours. The
name is bigger than the
album name showing she’s
more important. people will
recognize her from her
name rather than album
name
The record labels and institutional credits are
shown on screen, they are minimal and placed
on corners of the screen so that they don’t get
in the way of the image which the audience
should focus on. The colour of the text is white
& gold standing out from the black background
Text included on
screen says that it’s a
#1 international
smash’ which
persuades the
audience that her
songs are globally
known. The use of
language Smash
creates an effect of
the album being the
most talked about
which will convince
the audience to buy
the album as they will
want to know what
song is allegedly #1.
Other artists are mentioned
e.g. B.o.B. which is in large
font. This allows people who
know him will listen to this
song he's featured in. his fan
base will be attracted to this
album giving it popularity
Her website is included in the credit section.
This allows people who enjoy her music to
visit her website which has merchandise,
songs, information about her & tour dates.
The Text ‘Who you are’ is a powerful name for an album it’s a
statement which involves the audience as it seems like its talking
to them. This text is smaller because the central image is her
rather than song name
The image can appeal to
both males and females.
Females can appeal album
because she's showing her
powerful dominant side of
rebelling to the stereotypes
of women being seductive
and showing skin. She's
challenging such stereotype
as she's wearing black and
we only see her shoulders
no skin or provocative
clothing. It will also appeal
to men because she is the
center of attention in the
image and she's putting her
arms up as if she's showing
her sexual side.
Editing. Her eyes are enhanced to create a blue effect
which will grab the audiences attention as she's the
first thing the audience sees when looking at this
advert.
is the same as
CDThe Advert cover
which makes it
easier to recognize
the album cover
