Rice production is the most important crop in East, South, and Southeast Asia, with Asian farmers growing 90% of the world's rice, primarily in China and India which together account for half of global rice. Rice is very labor intensive to cultivate, with seedlings transplanted by hand into flooded paddies. Poultry production has also transformed from small-scale to large-scale industrial operations for chickens, eggs, and meat, primarily conducted by 10 major companies in factory-like conditions, especially in southern U.S. states like Arkansas.
