After shaving, men often apply aftershave products which contain ingredients like alcohol to prevent infection from cuts, fragrances, and moisturizers to soften skin. There are different types of aftershaves including alcohol-based, which close pores to prevent irritation; antiseptic, which contain antiseptic agents; and lotion-based, which soothe skin. Aftershaves are evaluated to check for quality ingredients and ensure they do not cause skin issues like sensitization.

2. After Shave Preparations
● Aftershave is a lotion,gel or liquid used mainly by
men after have finished shaving.
● It may contain an antiseptic agent such as
alcohol to prevent infection from cuts as
well as numb damaged skin, a perfume
to enhance scent and moisturizer to
soften the skin.

3. • An alcohol-based, fragrance-free astringent can be
used as an aftershave.
• The alcohol in the aftershave closes pores in the skin
and prevents irritation due to razor burn.
• It raises the ph of the skin after the use of alkaline
soap.
• It also causes mild coagulation of skin proteins and
protects the skin by closing the pores which got
opened during shaving.

6. Alcohol Based Aftershave
● The pores are left open and the skin gets roughed up
by dragging a sharp razor across the face.
● Thus it is generally, the man will usually rinse off his
face and then apply cold water in an attempt to close
down the pores and then splash on some aftershave.

8. Antiseptic Aftershave
● An antiseptic is a substance that prevents the growth
and reproduction of various micro-organism on the
external surface of the body.

bacteria, while others merely prevent or inhibit their
growth.
● The main purpose is reduce the possibility of sepsis,
infection or putrefaction by germs.

14. Evaluation
As in any other products, shaving preparations and
aftershave preparations should be evaluated for quality
and performance.
Identification of various ingredients and their qualitative
estimation should be done by suitable methods.

15. Evaluation of shaving creams & soaps
Some tests are performed to evaluate the before shave
preparations:
i. Determination of caustic alkali: As free alkali can
damage the skin, it is necessary to determine it. It can
be done by any suitable methods.
ii. Determination of potash soap: As it is necessary
that 50% of alkali used for saponification be potash,

iii)Determination of total free acids: It is also necessary to
determine the free fatty acids present in the soaps or
creams. The titer of fatty acids is required to determine by
suitable methods.
iv)Determination of total fatty materials: As a minimum
amount of total fatty materials must be present in different
shaving preparations for supplementing oils to the skin,
this is also to be checked and determined.

17. v. Foam formation: For foam producing preparations
formation of foam, the nature and stability of foam, the
nature and stability of foam should be studied and
compared with the standard.
vi. Skin sensitization test: This is also important as these
preparations, due to presence of some agents, can cause
skin sensitization.
vii.Stability of the cream: This is to study physical stability
of the products by various means or accelerated stability
study.

18. Evaluation of Aftershave Preparations
For the evaluation for aftershave these tests are
performed:
i. Antiseptic property: To prevent infection of cuts,
as well as to act as an astringent to reduce skin
irritation.
ii. Determination of alcohol content: For elimination
of stinging and burning when applying the lotion to
the skin.

19. iii. Dermatological safety: Do not apply after shave
immediately after you finished shaving since doing so
might make your skin sore or irritated.
